George Wemple

March 16, 1997
George Alan Wemple, 84, of 23 E. Eighth Ave., Gloversville, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a short illness.

Born Feb. 22, 1911 in Gloversville, he was the son of George L. and Alice Van Allen Wemple. Mr. Wemple was a graduate of Gloversville High School. He was in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.

Mr. Wemple was a disabled veteran from World War II with the 10th Mountain Division, and a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He attended North Main Street United Methodist Church in Gloversville.

Me married Amelia Simon on Feb. 5, 1942. She died June 7, 1975.

Mr. Wemple is survived by his sister-in-law, Matilda Simon of Gloversville, with whom he resided for many years; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Private funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to 10th Mountain Division, 1776 S. Jackson St., Denver, Colo., 80210.

Arrangements are by the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville.

Wesley Putman

March 17, 1997
Wesley D. Putman, 59, of First Avenue, Broadalbin, died Monday evening at Albany Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Johnstown, he was the son of Wesley M. and Ethel Schoolcraft Putman and was a 1954 graduate of Broadalbin High School. He served in the apprentice program with General Electric Co., Schenectady, where he then became employed in turbine management for 40 years, retiring in 1995. Mr. Putman was instrumental in the development of the Robert Moses Parkway Dam, located in Niagara County.

Mr. Putman was a member of the Army National guard based in Schenectady for 19 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant.

He was a former chief of the Kennyetto Volunteer Fire Co. and was a chairman of the former Broadalbin Civic Association.

Mr. Putman was a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church in Gloversville.

Survivors include two sons, David W. Putman of Ballston Lake and Michael W. Putman of Buffalo; two daughters, Pamela A. Colasanti of Johnstown and Melissa A. Nicosia of Broadalbin; his parents, Wesley and Ethel Schoolcraft Putman of Johnstown; a sister, Nancy L. Sammons of Sammonsville, his special friend, Kay Fassett of Broadalbin; nine grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin with the Rev. Gregory Le Strange of Fayetteville officiating. Spring burial will take place at the Broadalbin Cemetery.

A calling hour will precede the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 139 S. Lake Ave., Albany, 12208.

Antonio Russo

March 18, 1997
Antonio Russo, 84, of 35 William St., Gloversville, died Tuesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after a long illness.

Born Oct. 11, 1912 in Gloversville, he was the son of Nicholas and Mary Gentile Russo.

Mr. Russo was a graduate of Gloversville High School. He was employed in maintenance with the Fulton County Infirmary, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church in Gloversville.

He married Sophie Mendetta on May 31, 1942.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Mary Ricciardi of Gloversville; a son, Nicholas Russo of Gloversville; a granddaughter; two great-grandsons; and a sister, Josephine Bunn of Gloversville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, with the Rev. Donald Czelusniak officiating. Burial will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville in the spring.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville 12078; or to St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, 149 S. Main St., Gloversville, 12078.

Fred Cummings

March 18, 1997
Fred Cummings, 79, of Callaghan Boulevard, Charlton, died Tuesday at home after a long illness.

Born in Belfast, Ireland, Mr. Cummings was a graduate of Quincy, Mass., High School and earned an associate's degree from Wentworth Institute in Boston.

He moved to the Schenectady area in 1940 when he joined the General Electric Co. as a student draftsman. In 1942, he transferred to gas turbine drafting. During his career, he held various supervisory positions until 1972, when he was appointed manager of documentation systems and drafting in the gas turbine technical resources operation. He retired in 1980.

Mr. Cummings was the author of two technical papers and was a design contributor to the GE Aircraft Engine that was a forerunner to the gas turbine.

He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club, GE Elfun Society, the General Electric Co. Hall of History Society, and a former member of the Edison Club.

Mr. Cummings was also a former member of the First Reformed Church.

He served twice as vice chairman and also as a board member for the Institute for the Certification of Engineering Technicians.

His first wife, Grace Flatt Cummings, died in 1978.

He later married Sally Shea Cummings on March 29, 1980.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Marcia Dunbar of Houston and Leslie Cummings of Syracuse; and a grandson.

Private services and burial will be conducted at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Schenectady or the Ballston Lake Elementary Squad.

Arrangements are by Light's Funeral Home in Schenectady.

Carl Chichester

March 19, 1997
Carl E. Chichester Jr., 68, of 129 Old Trail Road, Tribes Hill, died this morning at home after a long illness.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam.

Gordon Cook

March 15, 1997
Gordon T. Cook, 67, of Route 162, Sprakers, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a long illness.

Born May 6, 1929 in Broadalbin, he was the son of Marvin and Blanche Shuster Cook. He was a graduate of Broadalbin schools.

For more than 48 years, he was manager for the Moyer-Buchner Farm before retiring in 1992.

Survivors include four cousins, James R. Cook of Gloversville, Donald Crannell and Marjorie Bishop, both of Broadalbin and Gail Cramer of Northville. He is also survived by Catherine Buchner, Linda Russell, Jeffery Watson, Kenneth Moyer, James Moyer and families, all of Sprakers.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Walrath & Bushouer Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, with the Rev. R.W. Williams officiating. Burial is in Northampton Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 126, Canajoharie, 13317.

Carmela Nocera

March 19, 1997
Carmela (Fondacaro) Nocera, 82, of Michigan Avenue, Schenectady, died Wednesday at her home.

Born in the Province of Calabara in Italy, she was the daughter of Joseph and Seraphine Domanica Fondacaro.

She came to Amsterdam from Italy when she was 2 years old, settling in Amsterdam and moving to Schenectady upon her marriage.

Mrs. Nocera was a homemaker.

She married Emilio Nocera on Sept 6, 1936.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Ninfa Wood of Oakland, Calif., and Seraphine (Candy) Barton, of Clifton Park; a son, Ralph J. Nocera of Clifton Park; five grandchildren and four great- grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Furiani of San Gabael, Calif., Lucy Monte, of Breezy Point and Dorothy Bottone of Schenectady; two brothers, John Fondacaro and Samuel Fondacaro, both of Amsterdam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private funeral services will be conducted Friday morning at the N. Rossi & Sons Funeral Home, Union at North Jay streets, Schenectady. Burial will be Friday morning in Sts. Cyryl and Method Cemetery in Rotterdam.

Calling hours for family and relatives only, are from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis Tenn, 38105.

Carl Chichester

March 19, 1997
Carl E. Chichester Jr., 68, of 129 Old Trail Road, Mohawk, died Wednesday morning at his home after a long illness.

Born Oct. 26, 1928 in Geneseo, he was the son of Carl E. and Bertha Dehr Chichester.

He attended schools in Defreestville and moved to Fort Hunter at the age of 16.

He was first employed with the state of New York Barge Canal System in maintenance, then with the Town of Florida maintenance department for several years. He then worked for Jeffer's Bottled Gas Service, and later with the Montgomery County Infirmary until retirement in 1984.

Mr. Chichester was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Fonda.

Mr. Chichester was first married to Marlene McQuade. He later married Genevieve Summers on July 21, 1984.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Carl E. Chichester III of Gloversville, Donald E. Chichester of Fonda, and Kevin Chichester of Florida; three daughters, Carlene Dorman of Gloversville, Cathy Simonds of Gloversville, and Laurie Fallis of Johnstown; two stepsons, Michael Burroughs of Scotia; Douglas Burroughs of Northville; three stepdaughters, Marie Fariello of Amsterdam, Lorraine Stewart of South Carolina, and JoAnn Burroughs of Florida; three sisters, Marie Weston of Redding, Calif., Rosemary Dopp of Fort Hunter and Martha Burroughs of Scotia; three brothers, William Foose of Bloomfield, Frank Chichester of Tribes Hill, and Lee Chichester of Fort Hunter; 26 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Christopher Hamm officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.

Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
