Beatrice Irene Lawson

DUNDEE - Beatrice Irene Lawson, age 92, of Dundee, died Thursday April 27, 2006 at Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home, Penn Yan.

There are no prior calling hours. A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday (May 13) at the Starkey United Methodist Church, Lakemont-Himrod Rd. Dundee with Rev. Ann Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Lakemont Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Starkey United Methodist Church, Dundee 14837.

Beatrice was born October. 17, 1913 in Rochester, the daughter of the late Vern and Sadie McKenzie Robinson. She graduated from Starkey Seminary in 1930. On Jan. 1, 1946 in Waverly, she married the late Walter E. Lawson; he passed away on April 13, 1990. A life long local resident she was a former owner of Cluster Pines, on Route 14 in Dundee; having taken over from her parents in 1946. She and her husband ran the store and motel until their retirement in 1970. Mrs. Lawson was a member of the Starkey United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Dundee American Legion Ladies Auxiliary; she enjoyed gardening, and knitting.

She is survived by her only son Larry C. Lawson with whom she made her home; 2 brothers, Roy (Verna) Killigrew of Springfield, Ohio, and Warren (Betty) Covert of Port Orange, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by a brother Earl Covert of Buffalo.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee.

Matthew Ryan Kent Comfort

DUNDEE - Matthew Ryan Kent Comfort, age 15, of Dundee, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, in Penn Yan.

Friends called from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday (May 3) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee; where a funeral service was held at 5 p.m. with Rev. Matt Pickering officiating. Burial was held in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee, at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Dundee Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, 14837

Matthew was born December 13, 1990 in Montour Falls, NY, the son of Loren S. Comfort and Marjorie Smith. Matthew was an 8th grade honor roll student at Dundee Central School. He enjoyed collecting Pokemon cards, fishing, Harry Potter books and movies, and his GameBoy. He loved God and attended various area churches with his grandparents.

He is survived by his father Loren S. Comfort of Buffalo; his mother Marjorie Smith of Montour Falls; 3 sisters Ashley Smith of Dundee, Amanda Comfort, and Laurene Comfort both at home; a brother Damion Westlake of Montour Falls; paternal grandparents raising him as their own Charles and Jill Huyler at home; and maternal grandparents Kent and Connie Greenfield of Dundee; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was pre-deceased by a brother Justin Lee Gee in 1982.

Ronald W. King

SAVONA - Ronald W. King, 63, of Scudder Rd., passed away Monday May 1, 2006 at Corning Hospital, Corning.

He was born September 27, 1942 in Savona, to Wesley and Mary Scanlon King. He was a truck driver for Knight Settlement Sand and Gravel,

Bath, and a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Savona.

Ron is survived by two daughters, Wendy Havens of Bath, and Marcie Johnston of Massachusetts; one brother, Tom King of South Carolina; six grandchildren, and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Savona, Thursday, May 4 at 3:30 p.m. with Father Brad Benson officiating.

Lloyd L. Shaut

CAMPBELL - Lloyd L. Shaut, 73, of 3708 Beeman Hollow Road, Campbell, entered into rest on Monday, May 1, 2006 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sa yre, Pennsylvania.

Lloyd was born on December 3, 1932 in Bath, a son of Claude and Wilma Towner Shaut. He married Hazel M. Sutton on August 30, 1952 in Savona.

Lloyd worked at J & J Auto Parts in Corning from 1956 until 1974 when he purchased the store and operated it until he retired in 1997. He enjoyed farm e q u i p m e n t a n d woodworking.

Survived by his wife, Hazel M. Shaut; a daughter, Laura ("Hap") Eaves of Middlesex; two sons, Leon (Beth) Shaut of Campbell and Doug (Debbi) Shaut of Amboy, Washington; three sisters, Ila (Carl) Ross of Canisteo, twins Dorothy A. Shaut and Doris (John) Fisher both of Bath; mother in law, Mary Sutton of Addison; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and extended family; his faithful companion his dog "Stubby".

Friends called on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 1011 a.m. at the Flint Funeral Home, 10 Wall Street, Addison. Funeral and committal services were held there on Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dale Ingraham officiating. Burial was held in Nondaga Cemetery, Bath.

Lana A. McGarvey

ORLANDO, FLORIDA - Lana A. McGarvey, 94, of Orlando, formerly of Campbell, died Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at the home of her daughter in Orlando.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include three sons, Gerald E. McGarvey of Clearfield, Pennsylvania, Merle B. McGarvey of Burnside, Pennsylvania, David McGarvey of Hollywood, Florida.; two daughters, Doris Bish of Campbell, Lois Horan of Orlando, Florida.

Calling hours were held from 1-3 p.m. Friday at Lloyd-Dimmick Funeral Home, 91 Rose St., Irvona, Pennsylvania.

Services were held there at the conclusion of calling hours at 3 p.m. Friday, the Rev. Scott Hartsock officiating.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Rural LaJose.

Barry Edmund Gelder

COLORADO - Barry Edmund Gelder went to be with the Lord on April 29, 2006.

Barry was born to John and Joyce Gelder of Bath, in 1947. He graduated from Haverling High School in 1965 and attended Houghton College before spending four years in the U.S. Navy as a Quartermaster.

Barry is survived by his loving wife, Susan, his wonderful son, Philip, and his soon to be born grandchild. He is also survived by his parents, his brother Bob, and his niece and nephew, Lea and Craig.

Barry enjoyed playing his musical saw at various praise and worship services, but he always said that the greatest joy in his life was the privilege of holding Bible studies, and ministering to the men at the correctional facility in Buena Vista, Colorado.

Donations can be made to the Barry E. Gelder Memorial Fund, please go to Ent Federal Credit Union at 4545 East Galley Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80909. A memorial service in his honor was held on Friday, May 5 at 10 a.m. at New Life Church, 11025 Voyager Parkway, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80921.

Daniel C. Walker

BATH - Daniel C. Walker, 55, of 32 Lyon Street passed away Saturday, May 6, 2006 at his home. He was born October 8, 1950 in Bath. The son of Frank C. and Doroty J. Seager Walker.

Dan was an Army Veteran from 1972-1979, serving in Germany. Dan was the club manager of the Steuben County Veterans Memorial, and also a member, member of the Hammondsport American Legion and President of its Executive Committee Member of the legion pool team, and a member of the Bath Lodge of Elks.

Surviving are his mother Dorothy J. (Dottie) Walker; sisters Carolyn Bates of Savona, and Joyce Walker of Bath; nieces and nephews Lisa (Larry) Booth, Danae (Tony) Ferandes, Stacie (Jason) VanSkiver, Terri (Eric) Allington; Great nieces and nephews Joshua and Jacob Booth, Walker and Holland Ferandes and Joel VanSkiver; also surviving are aunts, uncles, and cousins, and Vickie Walker and Adam and Patrick Parks.

Friends called at the LaMarche Funeral Home in Hammondsport Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. Funeral services were held at the Funeral Home Wednesday at 4 p.m. Interment with full Military honors were in Nondaga Cemetery, Bath. An Elks Service was held Tuesday night at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Road, Corning.

Myrtle Irene Champlain

BATH - Myrtle Irene Champlain, blessed mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister in Christ to many, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on April 17, 2006 at Corning Hospital, surrounded by her family.

She was born August 20, 1933, to Waldo and Myra Bourne Hale in Canisteo. She married Jerrold J. Champlain on November 8, 1952. He predeceased her on November 9, 1999. She was also predeceased by her brother Donald Hale, and sisters Connie Hale, Wilma Risley, and Marie Taft.

Irene, as she was known, was a Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, and member at Bucksettlement Church in Bath for many years. She was presently a member of the Campbell Alliance Church in Campbell. Her faith in Jesus Christ was her most valued asset. She was a faithful prayer warrior and partner for many. She not only raised her own seven children, but provided daycare to so many families throughout the years. It was often said if all the children she ever provided daycare for stood side by side, it would easily be miles long.

She is survived by her daughters, Flossie (Michael) Stryker of Bath, Jeanette (James) Taft of Campbell, and Elizabeth Bradfield of Chanute, Kansas; and her sons, Jerrold C. (Lynnette) Champlain, Ro b e r t A. Champlain, Michael L. Champlain, and Nathan Hale, all of Bath. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Laura Champlain of Prattsburgh, David Stryker of Bath, Bradley Champlain and Brandy Champlain of Bath, Shiann Bradfield and Destinee Bradfield of Chanute, Kansas, and Bryan Champlain of Bath, and her "adopted grandchildren" Charmine Parks and Julie Drew of Bath; and six greatgrandchildren, Kaylea Taft, Rachael and Hanna Webster, Dalton

Champlain, K r i s t a Champlain, and Blake Adams, all of Bath. She is survived by

a sister, Eugenia Northrup of Hornell, and two brothers, Waldo Hale of Canisteo, and Philip Hale, St. Albans, Vermont; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were held on Wednesday, April 19 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Seager-Jones Funeral Home in Bath. Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 20 at 11 a.m. at the Campbell Alliance Church, Campbell. Rev. Mark Nelepa, Rev. Raymond Fritz, and Rev. Joseph DeSerio officiated. Burial was held at Pleasant Va l l e y C e m e t e r y, Hammondsport.

No flowers please: memorials may be made to the Alliance Church Building Fund.

Raymond Eugene Donley

HAMMONDSPORT - Raymond Eugene Donley was born in the town of Italy on March 18,1927, only son of Ralph and Ethel Donley. He attended Naples Central School, Rochester Business Institute, then did a tour of duty in the US Army Air Corps. He married Helen Derby on August 9,1947. He graduated from the University of Albany with a BS in Business Education and earned his MS in Education at Alfred University. He began his teaching career as a co-op teacher at Bradford and Hammondsport Schools and taught a total of 25 years. He retired then continued to substitute another ten years at area schools.

He died on May 7, 2006 at Corning Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 58 3/4 years, Helen Derby Donley and four living children, five grandchildren, and one greatgrandson. They are Julia and her husband Michael Lavarnway of Elmira, Jeffrey Donley of Hammondsport and his fiance Linda Beeman of Bath, Jonathan Donley and his girlfriend Kimberly Williamson of Elmira, and Jennifer Donley of Cheektowaga. The grandchildren are Joseph and his wife Adriane Donley of Trumansburg, Bianca and her husband David Maples of San Antonio, Texas, Brandon and Anastasia Donley of Corning, Casey Donley of Shipensburg, Pennsylvania, and his greatgrandson Derek Daniel Maples of San Antonio.

He was a colorful, charismatic character who loved his family, his students, his friends, and his many pet animals including dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, sheep, goats, calves, etc. According to his wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral services. A celebration of his life was held on Wednesday, May 10 at the Hammondsport American Legion from 3-7 p.m. Donations in his name would be welcome to Hammondsport Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to Southern Tier Hospice.

Arrangements are by the LaMarche Funeral Home of Hammondsport.

William A. Rice

BATH - William A. Rice, age 84 of Bath, died, Friday, May 5, 2006 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira.

He was born in New York City, May 2, 1922 the son of Charles and Loretta Thompson Rice. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He was a retired Bank Teller from New York City and had also worked in Hospitals in the New York City area.

He is survived by his friend, Madelyn Glover of Savona, and her son Liam, and many friends at Spring Meadow Apartments in Bath.

A Memorial Mass was held on Thursday, May 11 at 10 a.m. at the Union Chapel at the Bath V.A.M.C. with Reverend John Wydeven presider. Burial was held in the Bath National Cemetery.
