Obituary: Mr. William R. "Bill" Heiland, age 79, of Brennan Rd., Ilion, entered into eternal rest on Monday evening, Feb. 12, 2007 in
Faxton/St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford.

He was born on July 5, 1927 in Ilion, son of the late Harry F. Heiland, Sr., and Thelma (Hadcock) Heiland and was educated in Ilion schools. On November 12, 1958, he was united in marriage with Glenis Shipman in the Episcopal Church, Ilion. Mr. And Mrs. Heiland has shared a blessed and devoted union of 48 years. A proud veteran of World War II, Bill served with the United States Navy and was honorably discharged on September 23, 1947. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal and served with the following ships/stations: USS  Oklahoma, USS LST, USS Lesuth, USS Chipola, ComFltAct, and the USNH. Bill was last employed with the Ilion Central School District as a custodian. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a life member of the Frankfort/Ilion VFW.

In his earlier years, he enjoyed long drives with his wife and daughters especially to the St. Lawrence area and to Speculator Lake. He enjoyed catching up on world history and being surrounded by family and friends. Bill will be sadly missed by his loved ones.

Survivors include his beloved wife Glenis at home; two loving daughters: Tamara J. "Tami" rice and husband Dana of Ilion and Laurie A. Heiland-Crouch and husband James also of Ilion; a sister: Jean Cioli of Melbourne, Fl.; his adored grandchildren: Christina Williams and husband Jeff, William Bellstedt, Janelle Crouch, Karl Rice, and Journey Crouch; a cherished great grandson: Syd Austin Williams; a beloved sister in law: Joyce Plumley of Herkimer and a nephew: David Heiland of Watervliet. He was predeceased by a brother: Harry F. "Fred" Heiland, Jr., and by his twin brother: David "Bud" Heiland.

Relatives and friends are invited to visitation at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 W. Street, Ilion, on Thursday, February 15, 2007 from 4-6 p.m. His funeral will commence at 6 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home on Thursday evening with the Rev. Thomas Trees, Rector of the Episcopal Church, Ilion, officiating. Bill will be laid to rest in Armory Hill Cemetery, in the spring, where full military honors will be accorded. Kindly consider memorial offerings to the Cedarville Ambulance; envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Members of the Ilion/Frankfort VFW will conduct their service at 5:30 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, Ilion.

Alice Crossway

Obituary: Alice G. Crossway, age 80, of 122 W. Main St., Mohawk, formerly of Ilion, died Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford.

She was born on March 6, 1926 in  Johnson City, NY, the daughter of Arno and Ethel (Eldred) Gregg and attended Ilion schools. In 1942, she was married to Robert Crossway. He died in February 1998. At one time she was a key punch operator at Sperry Rand UNIVAC, Ilion. Later, Alice owned and operated Remington Inn in the Ilion Gorge, Northside Inn in Schuyler, and Crossway's Tavern in Ilion for many years.

She was a very well known and respected restaurant-tavern owner and operator. Alice was also a major contributor to the local community in so many ways and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

In her early years she taught Sunday school at the Mohawk United Methodist Church. Alice sponsored many bowling and softball teams. She started Crossway's Fishing Club and was secretary/treasurer of the Liquor Dealers Association for many years. Alice was a lifetime member of the Ilion Women of the Moose and was a member of the Ilion American Legion Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Mohawk O.E.S.

Survivors include her son, Robert "Bob" Crossway of Mohawk; her daughter, Debra "Debi" (Crossway) Essert of Southern Maryland; seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, James Crossway and his children, James, Kimberly, and Alicia of Ilion, Renee Fultz and husband, Don and children, Jamie, Christina, Kara, Jerica, Jordan, Tony, and Lauren of Laurelton, PA, Jennifer Crossway and her children, Derik and Brianna of Edgewater, FL, Brandon Crossway and wife, Jennifer of Harrisinburg, VA, Melody Crossway and her son, Ezra of Winchester, VA, Shawn Gregg Essert and wife, Lori and daughters, Makenli, Riley, and Sedona of Waldorf, MD, Shea Renee Gronau and husband, Joe and children, Shawn, Jobilynn and Savannah of Bryans Road, MD; her sister, Vicki Gilbert of St. Petersburg, FL and her four children, Edward and wife, Ora Anne and family, James and wife, Barbara and family, Sharon Fournier and husband, Ted and family; Donald and wife Katherine and family; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, Chester "Chet" Gregg who is survived by his son, Chester Jr. and wife, Becky and family.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, February 17, 2007, at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with Pastor Jack Cogar officiating. Spring interment will be held at Mohawk Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, February 16, 2007, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Ilion Women of the Moose service will be held at 3:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Anyone who needs a ride to the calling hours or the funeral services may call the funeral home at 895-7722 for complimentary transportation assistance.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Hospital For Children. Donation envelopes are available at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, Ilion.

Edward M. Champagne

Obituary: Edward M. "Ed" Champagne, age 82, of Cedarville Rd., Town of Litchfield, a lifelong valley resident, passed away Thursday, February 22, 2007.

Ed was born July 4, 1924 in Ilion, son of the late Roy and Frances (Morris) Champagne. He attended Ilion Schools. Ed was a proud veteran of WWII, serving with the US Navy. On January 8, 1955, Ed was united in marriage to Patricia "Pat" Thomas at St. Joseph's Church in W. Winfield, a blessed union of 52 years. Ed retired from the Remington Arms Co. in 1985 and drove school bus for many years. He was owner/operator of Champagne's Market on Second St. for many years, closing in 1975. At one time he was co-owner of Maple Crest Golf Course. At one time he enjoyed bowling with his league, golfing and fishing.

Ed was a family man whose life was centered around his loved ones. He was a lifetime member of the Ilion KofC and the Ilion American Legion Post 920. He was of the Roman Catholic faith.

Survivors include his wife, Pat; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Szewczyk and her husband, Peter of Ilion, Therese Colwell and her husband, Richard "Skip" of Herkimer, Barbara Lincourt and her husband, Jim of Litchfield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Champagne and his wife, Dana of Herkimer, Christopher Champagne of Cedarville and Sandy Champagne of Ilion; his cherished grandchildren, Michael Taylor, Emily and Jason Champagne, Andrea Szewczyk, Jeremiah, Carley and Jamie Lincourt, Christopher, Benjamin, Abby and Jack Champagne; and one great-grandchild, Brook Champagne; two brothers-in-law, George and Mike Thomas of W. Winfield; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and his very special friend, Frank "Fran" Jenne of FL. Ed was predeceased by his son, John in 2002; and his sister, Therese Warburton.

Ed's funeral service will be held Sunday, February 25th, commencing at 4 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with Father Terrence Healey officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 p.m., prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. The Ilion KofC will pay respects at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of floral offerings, please consider memorials in Ed's name to the Frankfort/Ilion Food Pantry or the Cedarville Vol. Fire Dept. Ambulance Corps. Donation envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ursula "Sarah" Drayo, 90, of Le Roy died Wednesday, April 4, 2001.

Mrs. Helen A. Goodridge, 80, a native of Le Roy died Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at her home in Leesburg, FL.
