Mrs. Emma Jean Churchill

Batavia - Mrs. Emma Jean Churchill, age 92, a former employee and manager at Branton´s Dairy Store from its’ opening in 1958 to 1994, died Friday, December 5, 2003, at Beauregard Memorial Hospital in Deridder, Louisiana.

Mrs. Churchill was born March 2, 1911 in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of the late Albert and Augustina Arndt Meister.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Churchill was the wife of the late Earl P. Churchill who died in 1966 and sister of the late Martha Will and Otto Meister.

Survivors include two sons; Dr. Gary E. (Barbara) Churchill of Stafford and Paul C. (Sheila) Churchill of Louisiana; a daughter, Cheryl A. Easton of Florida; a brother, Elmer (Julia) Meister of Florida and a sister, Bertha Holnbeck of Batavia, NY. Eight grandchildren, one great grandchild and nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street and from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church where services will follow at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 31 Washington Ave. Batavia, NY 14020.

Miss Edythe J. Davis

Batavia - Miss Edythe J. Davis, age 94, of Batavia, an employee at E.N. Rowell Box Factory in Batavia, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at United Memorial Medical Center.

Miss Davis was born December 20, 1909 in Warsaw, a daughter of the late William and Blanche Cross Davis.

Miss Davis was a resident at the Genesee County Nursing Home for over 15 years.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and their families.

She was the sister of the late Alvin (Marjorie) Davis, Willard (Aldine) Davis, Beatrice (Carroll) Jackson and Mildred (Anthony) Fix.

There are no prior calling hours. Graveside services will be held in the springtime at Warsaw Cemetery, Route 19, Warsaw. Memorials may be made to Activities Fund at the Genesee County Nursing Home, 278 Bank Street, Batavia, New York 14020.

Mr. Carl M. Hollis

Batavia - Mr. Carl M. Hollis, age 80, of Batavia, a foundry foreman at Gleason Works in Rochester for 28 years, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at the New York State Veteran's Home.

Mr. Hollis was born November 27, 1923 in Rochester Mills, Pa., the son of the late Roy and Della Sebring Hollis.

Mr. Hollis was a longtime member of the Church of the Living Waters in LeRoy and retired from Gleason Works in 1983. He was a Staff Sergeant with the U.S. Army during World War II.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Silvis Hollis; two sons, Gordon (Betsy) Hollis of Washington and Roger (Kerrie) Hollis of Colorado; four daughters, Karen Collette of Medina, Charlene Frazer of Texas, Kathie Hollis of Rochester and Jeanette (Dennis) Ryder of Spencerport; a sister, Louise (Lawrence) Wolfgang of Ohio; a brother-in-law, Wallace Lockard of Arizona; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Hester Lockard.

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Western New York Chapter, 1284 French Road, Depew, NY 14043-4882

Marion C. Montague

BATAVIA - Marion C. Montague, age 88, a former secretary at Flint-Farrell Insurance Agency, died Saturday, January 31, 2004, at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Facility.

Mrs. Montague was born September 29, 1915 in Batavia, the daughter of the late John and Ethel Green Burns.

She was a lifetime member of St. Mary´s Church; a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court of St. Rita for over 50 years and the Genesee Region Insurance Professionals.

Her husband, William Montague died in 1974.

Surviving are three daughters, Judy Della Penna and Melanie (William) Sutherland both of Batavia and Wendy (Charles) Pero of Atlanta, GA., two sisters Ruth Dickinson of Batavia and Constance ( Robert) Kachelmeyer of Oakfield, 7 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.

Mrs. Montague was the sister and sister in law of the late John (Jane) Burns, Barbara Connolly and Frances Passlow.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at St. Marys Church followed by burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Batavia. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Notre Dame High School, Union St., Batavia, NY 14020 to establish a scholarship fund in memory of Mrs. Montague.

Charles J. Riedmiller

Batavia - Mr. Charles J. Riedmiller, age 61, VP of Marketing and CFO at Genesee Valley Transportion, of which he was the co-owner and founder, died Friday, January 9, 2004, at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mr. Riedmiller was born December 21, 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late Leonard and Casilda Wood Riedmiller of Ohio.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church and various career related organizations.

Surviving along with his mother, are his wife, Diane Powell Riedmiller, whom he married October 23, 1965; two sons, Jeffrey (Kelly) Riedmiller of California and James (Kim) Riedmiller of Stafford; a daughter, Julie Riedmiller of Batavia; two brothers, Leonard (Diane) Riedmiller and Dennis (Wendy) Riedmiller both of Ohio; a sister, Linda (Ed) Creelman of Ohio; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Riedmiller was an avid photographer and enjoyed railroads. Beside working with the railroad he collected all types of railroad memorabilia. He enjoyed his family and loved going out to dinner with family and friends.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Services will be at 9:00 AM Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph´s School, 303 E. Main St. Batavia, NY.

Jean Solmes Upson

BATAVIA - Jean Solmes Upson, age 79, of Batavia, died Friday, January 30, 2004, at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Upson was born September 24, 1924 in Batavia, the daughter of the late David B. and Marian Cone Solmes.

A graduate of Batavia High School and Wooster College in Ohio, Mrs. Upson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Batavia. She managed the local congressional office of the late Barber Conable and was a founder and past-president of the Genesee County Republican Women´s committee.

Mrs. Upson is survived by her husband, Richard J. Upson whom she married on June 22, 1946; a daughter, Anita E. Upson of Batavia; three sons, Hollis D. (Joy) Upson of Batavia, Stephen S. (Robin) Upson of LeRoy and David J. (Valarie) Upson of Rochester; four grandchildren, Nathanial, Erin, Meghan and Matthew Upson; a niece, Dorothy (David) Doerrer-Upson of Oakfield and a nephew, Richard E. (Wendy B.) Upson of Louisiana.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 East Main Street, Batavia. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bell Tower Restoration Fund of the First Presbyterian Church, 300 East Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020.

Mrs. Frieda H. Athoe

Batavia - Mrs. Frieda H. Athoe, age 103, died Thursday, September 11, 2003, at home under the care of HomeCare & Hospice.

Mrs. Athoe was born December 7, 1899 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Julius and Bertha Clatt Kamman.

Mrs. Athoe was the wife of the late Harold Athoe and mother of the late Jeanette Briggs.

She and her husband were instrumental in the site location and building of the St. Paul Lutheran Church on Washington Avenue. She was a member of the Church for over 80 years and participated in the choir, Ladies Aid and Mission League. She also belonged to the Batavia Garden Club, Batavia Club and the Cherry Hill Country Club of Canada.

Survivors include 2 daughters; Gloria (Fred) Allein and Wilma (Don) Meyer both of Batavia; a son, Harold (Marilyn) Athoe, II of Batavia; 14 Grandchildren, 30 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great Great Grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

There will be No Prior Calling Hours. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 31 Washington Avenue. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church School, 31 Washington Ave., Batavia, NY 14020 or HomeCare & Hospice, 550 E. Main St. Batavia, NY 14020. Arrangements were completed by the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main St. Batavia.

Gerald W. Ellingham

Batavia - Gerald W. Ellingham, age 56, of Batavia, co-owner and operator of Old Creek Upholstery in Batavia, died suddenly Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Ellingham was born December 29, 1946 in Batavia, a son of the late Henry and Carmeleta Blatt Ellingham.

He was an avid fisherman, boater and builder. He loved his Adirondack Cabin in Wanakona, New York and enjoyed antique car restoration.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Elam Ellingham, whom he married June 20, 1981; a son, Joseph (Melissa) Ellingham of Woodside, NY; two daughters, Kate Ellingham and Norah Ellingham, both of Batavia; 5 brothers, Robert (Sandra) Ellingham of Elba, Ronald (Josie) Ellingham of Stafford, David (Ellie) Ellingham of Rochester, James (Joan) Ellingham of Las Vegas, NV and Timothy (Maureen) Ellingham of Rochester; a sister, Mary (Raymond) Skeet of Alexander; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia where services will follow at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to The Family.

Mrs. Vivian L. Beecher

Bergen - Mrs. Vivian L. Beecher, age 86, of Bergen, formerly of Batavia, a bookkeeper at K-Mart, Charles Men’s Shop and the former Beardsley’s and Alexanders, died Friday, January 2, 2004, at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Beecher was born November 15, 1917 in Pembroke, the daughter of the late Edward and Ilah Mook Mullaney.

She was a 1936 graduate of Batavia High School and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church

Her husband, Collins C. “Bud” Beecher, died in 1988.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois (David) Schicker of Bergen; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was the mother of the late Maureen Beecher who died in 1951 and sister of the late Vincent Mullaney.

There are no prior calling hours. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 5, 2004 at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran School, 31 Washington Avenue, Batavia, New York 14020.

Bertha M. Brew

Bergen - Mrs. Bertha M. Brew, age 94, of Bergen, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Batavia Nursing Home.

Mrs. Brew was born October 6, 1908 in Ogden, a daughter of the late Charles and Vinie Widger Hill.

She was a longtime member of the Bergen Presbyterian Church, member of the Gillam-Grant Community Center was a former 4H leader and an avid gardener and craftsperson.

Her husband, William J. Brew died 1996.

Surviving are three daughters, Enid (Dean) Baker of Batavia, Laura (Robert) Baleno of Rochester, Cordelia (Al) Cohill of Buffalo; two sons, Theodore (Leslie) Brew of Florida and Howard (Sandra) Brew of Bergen; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the grandmother of the late Deborah Baker who died in 2000 and sister of the late Oscar, Arthur and William Hill.

There are no prior calling hours. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday (May 17, 2003) at the Bergen First Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to the church, 38 South Lake Street, P.O. Box 206, Bergen, New York 14416 or a charity of the donor´s choice. Arrangements were completed by H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home of Bergen.
