Mr. John Spiotta

Batavia – Mr. John Spiotta, age 87, of Batavia, a lifelong farmer with his brothers, Frank and the late Michael, died Saturday, September 18, 2004, at his home.

Mr. Spiotta was born April 12, 1917 in Batavia, a son of the late Michael and Mary (Spiotta) Spiotta.

Mr. Spiotta was a member of St. Anthony´s Church.

Mr. Spiotta is survived by three brothers, Frank Spiotta of Batavia, Anthony (Barb) Spiotta of Florida and Alphonse (Joan) Spiotta of Batavia;two sisters, Rose Mary (Warren) Ruhlman and Julia Queal, both of Batavia; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was the brother of the late Dominic, Michael and Anna Spiotta and Frances VanValkenburg.

There are no prior calling hours. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 23, 2004 at Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home followed by burial St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony´s Church, 122 Liberty Street, Batavia, New York 14020.

Edward Eugene Shepard

Buffalo - Mr. Edward Eugene Shepard, age 67, of Buffalo, an employee at National Fuel Gas in Tonawanda, prior to his retirement in 1996, died Thursday, September 30, 2004, at his daughter’s home in Snyder, NY

Mr. Shepard was born March 19, 1937 in Gloversville, NY, a son of the late Edward Shepard and Carolyn Paciolla Shepard Campbell.

He moved to Buffalo from Gloversville in 1974.

A veteran, he served in the US Army Reserve.

Survivors include a daughter, Heather Shepard of Snyder; a sister, Rebecca Sprei of Warwick, NY; 9 nieces and nephews and several cousins.

He is the brother of the late Louis Shepard.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Monday at Elmwood Cemetery, Harvester Ave., Batavia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Buffalo, Inc., 225 Como Park Boulevard, Cheektowaga, New York 14227-1480. Arrangements were completed by H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia.

Mr. David A. “Arv” Scott

LeRoy - Mr. David A. “Arv” Scott, age 65, of LeRoy, an employee at Hanson´s Aggregate in Honeoye Falls, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at United Memorial Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Scott was born April 14, 1939 in Batavia, a son of the late Yale and Lurene Ridd Scott.

A member of the Stafford Fire Department and their exempts, he enjoyed, fishing, boating, hunting.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Eleanor Hawker Scott; three sons, Thomas (Kathryn) Scott, Joseph (Michelle) Scott and Kenneth Scott, all of LeRoy; two brothers, Wayne (Doris) Scott of Melbourne, Fla. and Doug Scott of Perry; two sisters, Mary (James) MacIntyre and Diane (Don) Freeeman, both of LeRoy; four grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Shannon and Rebeka Scott; two special friends, Bill and Jeff Nicoll; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Terry David Scott who died in 1977 and brother of the late Arlene Ezzell and Bruce Scott.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Morganville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.

Mr. Merle L. Griffin

Kokomo, Indiana - Mr. Merle L. Griffin, age 81, of Kokomo, Indiana, formerly of Pavilion, a set-up man at Rochester Products prior to his retirement in 1979, died Sunday, October 3, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital in Kokomo, Indiana.

Mr. Griffin was born March 26, 1923 in Binghamton, a son of the late Frank and Daisy Stanton Griffin.

He was a member of a member of Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church in North Chili.

A veteran, he served with the Navy in World War II and served aboard the USS Hornet.

Survivors include his wife, Joan (Brown) Griffin, of Kokomo, Indiana; a daughter, Judith M. (Thomas) Pengelly of Penn Yan; a son, Robert M. (Sharon) Griffin of Penn Yan; a daughter, Susan L. (Donald) Bergman of Canandaigua; a daughter, Debbie J. (Bruce) Fitch of Churchville; stepdaughters, Pamela (David) Layson, Peggy (Terry) Kinzie, Penny (Kent) Clem all of Indiana; 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law

His first wife, Joyce Griffin, died in 2002.

Friends may call from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 51 South Lake Street, Bergen. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Firday at Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church, 4322 Buffalo Road in North Chili. Burial will be in Creekside Cemetery, Churchville. Memorials may be made to Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church, 4322 Buffalo Road, North Chili, New York 14514 or Light and Life Free Methodist Church, 5602 Deeson Road, Lakeland, Florida 33801.

Mr. A. Edward Caito

Batavia - A. Edward Caito of Batavia, died September 12th, 2004 at the Genesee County Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Caito was born in Batavia, a son of the late Anthony and Josephine (Mascari) Caito.

Mr. Caito was an employee of the City of Batavia for many years serving as City Clerk Treasurer, Director of Community Development and finally as Director of Urban Renewal until his retirement in 1977. Prior to his tenure with the City of Batavia, he was owner and proprietor of the Western Auto Store at 58 Main Street. He graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Business in 1952. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II for four years raising to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant as a gunnery instructor on P147 aircraft.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Matla Caito, a son, Paul (Cathleen) Caito of Loveland, Ohio, and a daughter Kathryn (Lee) Liolios of Lancaster; four grandchildren, Lindsay Caito, Chelsea Caito, Mitchell Caito, and Jake Caito all of Loveland, Ohio; an aunt Alice (Sam) Sansone of Syracuse, N.Y. and cousins also survive.

He was the brother of the late Frances Caito, Ann (Nick) Cassano, and Margaret Caito.

There are no prior calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia, New York. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Church or Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross Street, Batavia.

David E. Alexander

Bergen - David E. Alexander, age 81, of Bergen, a retired film inspector at Eastman Kodak Company, died Monday, September 20, 2004, at Park Ridge Hospital.

Mr. Alexander was born July 10, 1923 in Coldwater, New York, a son of the late William and Ethel Gill Alexander.

He was a member of Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church for over 40 years, was the first basketball coach at Roberts Wesleyan College, member of the Raider Club at Roberts Wesleyan College, and former scoutmaster of Troop 177 at Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church. He was a former co-owner of Alexander’s I.G.A. in the early 1960’s.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Balch Alexander, whom he married January 1, 1945; 5 sons, David D. (Barbara) Alexander of Myrtle Beach, SC, K. Scott (Margaret) Alexander of Middletown, CA, B. Bradley Alexander of Brockport, B. Todd Alexander of NJ and L. Lance (Kathleen) Alexander of Churchville; a daughter, Ruth A. (Mark) Logan of Churchville; a sister, Kathryn L. Alexander of Churchville; 3 sisters-in-law, Evelyn Frederick and Eloise Alexander, both of North Chili and Lucile Alexander of Perry; 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He is the brother of the late Robert Alexander, Harold Alexander, Stuart Alexander and Eleanor Freislich.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 51 South Lake Street, Bergen. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church. Burial will be in North Chili Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Roberts Wesleyan College, 2301 Westside Drive, Rochester, New York 14624 or Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church, 4322 Buffalo Road, North Chili, New York 14514.

Mrs. Marjorie W. Lawrence

Bergen - Mrs. Marjorie W. Lawrence, age 84, of Bergen, a 1939 graduate of Geneseo State Teachers College and a retired Teacher at Corfu Elementary School, died Monday, August 2, 2004, at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Lawrence was born June 1, 1920 in Alexander, NY, the daughter of the late Merlyn and Grace Hickox Woodruff.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn W. Lawrence whom she married December 4, 1943; three daughters, Carol (Thomas) Sprague of Georgia, Sandra (Dr. Edward) Pierce of Oklahoma, and Betty (David) Dunbar of Freeport, Grand Bahamas; a son, Rev. Dr. Kenneth (Dr. Connie) Lawrence of New Hampshire; two sisters, Harriet Miller of Batavia and Eleanor Klotzbach of Indian Falls; a brother, Donald Woodruff of Alexander. She is also survived by 12 Grandchildren, 4 Great Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lawrence was a member of the Bergen First Presbyterian Church, the Vacation Bible School Director, participated with the Bible Study Group and was an Elder of the Church. Previously she was a member of the North Darien Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was very active in the affairs of the Church. She hosted the Community Bible Club Study in her home and conducted the Bible Study at the Gillam Grant Center. She was as avid gardener.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 51 South Lake Ave., Bergen. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, located on Route 77 in Corfu followed by services at 1:00 pm at the Bergen First Presbyterian Church, 38 South Lake Ave., Bergen.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Bergen First Presbyterian Church, Box 206, Bergen, NY 14416.

Mr. LaVerne H. Fuller

Batavia - Mr. LaVerne H. Fuller, age 86, of Batavia, a self-employed farmer and agricultural salesman, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at New York State Veteran's Home.

Mr. Fuller was born July 24, 1918 in Batavia, a son of the late LaVerne Edwin and Corrinne Hale Fuller.

A member of St. Paul Episcopal Church in Stafford, Mr. Fuller served as a lay reader, chalice bearer and adult acolyte for the church. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Stafford Historical Society and a charter member of the Stafford Kitchen Konference.

His wife, Barbara Gruner Fuller, died in 1991.

Mr. Fuller is survived by two daughters, Sandra (John M.) Swanson of Bedford, Ma. and Linda Blythe of Batavia; a son, Wirt (Patricia) Fuller of Batavia; brothers and sisters, Dorothy Evans of Hollywood, Ca., Elaine (Willard) Waite of Plant City, Fla., Mark (Kathryn) Fuller of LaCanada, Ca., Avis (Donald) Henderson of Victorville, Ca., Eunice (Doyle) Wilcox of Hacienda Heights, Ca. and Erwin (Winky) Fuller of Port Townsend, Wa.; six grandchildren, Andrew Fuller, Lisa (Louis) Smith, Michael (Dayna) Blythe, David (Ashley) Blythe, Amy (Garth) Swanson and Matthew Blythe; three great-grandchildren, Barbara Jean and Jarrod Smith and Ethan Blythe and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m Tuesday at St. Paul Episcopal Church followed by burial in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Episcopal Church, Main Road, Stafford, New York 14143.

Mr. Raymond M. Follett

Batavia - Mr. Raymond M. Follett, age 93, of Batavia, died Tuesday, August 3, 2004.

Mr. Follett was born May 8, 1911 in Batavia, a son of the late Michael and Lulu Kidder Follett.

A 1930 graduate of Batavia High School, Mr. Follett was a member of St. Joseph´s Church in Batavia. He was a chicken farmer before serving in the Army during World War II, in Africa and Italy, from 1943-1946. He was later employed as a welder at Massey-Harris, McBride Steel and Eaton Yale & Towne, where he retired in 1976.

His wife, Jean Wojtacha Follett, died in 1983.

Mr. Follett is survived by his son, Raymond M. (Darlene) Follett, Jr. of Attica; his daughter, Kathleen Follett of Portland, Oregon; two grandchildren, Sara Jean & Daniel Follett; his cousin, Catherine Graff of Batavia; and nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Donald (Evalyn) Follett and Monica Follett.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Church followed by burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Genesee Wyoming Catholic School, 72 East Avenue, Attica, New York 14011 or to Notre Dame High School, 73 Union Street, Batavia, New York 14020.
