Irene Howe

Batavia - Mrs. Irene Howe, 96, of Batavia and formerly of East Main Street Road in Stafford, a cafeteria employee at Duffy-Motts in Hamlin, died Thursday, (July 31, 2008) at Batavia Nursing Home.

Mrs. Howe was born July 9, 1912 in Bergen, a daughter of the late Herman and Elsie (Gartley) Montgomery.

She loved gardening, baking, sewing and spending time with her dogs. Mrs. Howe was known as "Grandma Howe" to all of those that she babysat.

Survivors include a daughter, Elsie (George) Hart of Rochester; two daughters-in-law, Stella Howe of Batavia and Midgie Howe of Arizona; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She is the wife of the late George Howe, who died in 1969 and the mother of the late Roger, Blain and Neil Howe. Mrs. Howe is also predeceased by a brother, Earl Montgomery and three sisters, Margaret Hunt, Vera Pickle and Neva Pimm.

Calling hours are Monday, (August 11th), from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where services will be at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Activities Fund at the Batavia Nursing Home, 257 State Street, Batavia, New York 14020.

ROGER WILLIAM HARLOFF

Ellenton, FL- Mr. Roger William Harloff, age 76, formerly of Batavia, a long-time tomato farmer in the Bradenton/Palmetto area died Sunday, July 20, 2008 at his home under hospice care.

He started farming at an early age with his father Roy on their farm & dairy operations and later at Roger’s farm in Stafford. He moved his family to Bradenton, Fla. in May 1969.

Roger was a co-founder of the Batavia Kartsville (International Motorsports Park) in 1961, which was built on his father’s property on the north side of the Thruway. Racing had always been in Roger’s blood from the days when he raced stock cars in Western New York.

Roger was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, hunting, fishing and flying. He thoroughly enjoyed his farming, cattle and citrus operations and always had stories to share with the many people that he interacted with during the course of his long-time farming operations in the Manatee County area. He also enjoyed visiting the eastern Tennessee mountains and spending time at his lake place near Morristown, TN.

Survivors include three sons, Dean Harloff of Sarasota, FL., Edward Harloff of Bradenton, FL. and Russell Harloff of Bulls Gap, TN; four sisters, Shirley Jagow of Niagara Falls, Dorothy Pelton of Scottsdale, AZ; Helen Weaver of Corfu and Gloria Wolford, Corfu; four grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends may call on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia where services will follow at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

Doris R. Cowie

Alexander - Mrs. Doris R. Cowie, 87, of Alexander, died Monday, (July 14, 2008) at home while under HomeCare and Hospice.

Mrs. Cowie was born August 30, 1920 in Rochester, the daughter of the late Fred H. and Gabriella (Moore) Etter.

Mrs. Cowie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, flowers and all animals, especially birds.

Survivors include two sons, John T. (Georgette) Cowie of Batavia and James L. Cowie of Buffalo; two daughters, Llana G. Cowie of Alexander and Sheri L. (Mark) Whyle of Lancaster; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Leslie Cowie died in 1980.

Calling hours are Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in East Bethany Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Wyoming County SPCA, 808 Creek Road Attica, New York 14011 or a charity of the donor's choice.

Mrs. Elizabeth Dills Cina Clark

Batavia - Mrs. Elizabeth Dills Cina Clark, age 92, of Batavia, nursing supervisor at the Genesee County Nursing Home in Batavia and formerly Bethany, died Saturday, August 2, 2008 at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia.

Mrs. Clark was born August 18, 1915 in Bethany, a daughter of the late Ernest and Cora Raymond Dills.

She was a member of Ascension Parish and retired from the Genesee County Nursing Home in 1979.

Her husband, Samuel Cina died 1962.

She is survived by fifteen nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She is the sister of the late Henry, Richard, and Lamont Dills and Ethel M. Cook.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ascension Parish - St. Anthony's Church, 122 Liberty Street, Batavia. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Batavia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethany Volunteer Fire Department, 5253 Old Telephone Road, East Bethany, New York 14054.

Mr. Dennis S. Bateman

Byron - Mr. Dennis S. Bateman, 52, a machinist at Eastman Kodak and Lapp Insulator, died Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Crossroads House, Batavia.

Mr. Bateman was born August 26, 1955 in Batavia, a son of Gerald C. Bateman of Byron and the late Sarah Gerace Bateman.

Mr. Bateman was a member of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club and a life member of the South Byron Volunteer Fire Department. He chaired the motorcycle charity event, “Gifts from the Heart”. Dennis was a fabulous husband, father, grandpa, son, brother, uncle and an all around good Samaritan, always willing to help someone.

Surviving is his wife, Lynn (Campo) Bateman, whom he married January 10, 1981; a son, Jared (Loralyn) Bateman of Byron; a daughter, Justine Bateman of Rochester; a brother, Gerald C. (Peter Schragle) Bateman, Jr. of Rochester; a sister, Ann (Eric) Nelson of Pittsford; three grandchildren, Hayley, Sarah & Aidan Bateman; nephews, Brian & Geoff Nelson of Pittsford along with other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was the son-in-law of Dr. Gerald (Joyce) Campo of Rochester and brother-in-law of Stephen Campo and Kristen Barry, both of Rochester.

Friends may call on both Monday and Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. His Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Byron Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 210, Byron, New York 14422 or Crossroads House, P.O. Box 403, Batavia, New York 14021.

Mr. Alton M. Arnold

Bergen - Mr. Alton M. Arnold, 89, of Bergen, machine designer for Bausch & Lomb in Rochester, died Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Bridges of Mendon.

Mr. Arnold was born April 2, 1919 in Bergen, the son of the late Charles and Laura Spooner Arnold.

Mr. Arnold was a graduate of Clarkson College and he worked for Bausch & Lomb for 38 years. A member of Stone Church Presbyterian Church, Mr. Arnold was the organist of the church for many years and also taught Sunday school. He was a member of the session and served as Clerk of the session for 25 years. He was a member of the Rochester Theater Organ Society and Holland Purchase Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Kirtland Arnold; a son, Marvin (Irene) Arnold of Morrisville; two daughters, Anne (Ken) Heale of Arcade and Deborah (Gene) Godlove of Bergen; two sisters, Jean Hider of Rochester and Elizabeth (Robert) Long of Bergen; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

There are no prior calling hours. His services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stone Church Presbyterian Church, 7549 South Lake Road, Bergen. Burial will be in Stone Church Cemetery, Bergen. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Living Stones Fund at Stone Church Presbyterian Church, 7549 South Lake Road, Bergen, New York 14416.

Mr. David C. Angst

Stafford - Mr. David C. Angst, 85, of Stafford, an employee at Lapp Insulator in LeRoy, for 19 years prior to his retirement in 1981, died Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the home of his daughter in Batavia.

Mr. Angst was born September 15, 1922 in Auburn, a son of the late Guy Angst and Ann Olmstead Angst Wood.

He served in the European Theatre during WWII with the Air Force’ 153 Medical Battalion and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, president and co-owner of AM&M Clothiers, formerly on Main Street in Batavia and closed in 1963. He was a diehard Yankees fan, enjoyed golf at Terry Hills and LeRoy Country Club and was considered an excellent piano player.

His wife, Lila Jean (Krautwurst) Angst died June 19, 1993.

Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl Davison of Batavia and Bonnie Richardson of Toronto, Ontario; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Richardson of Toronto and Megan Jean Davison of Williamsburg, VA; his longtime companion, Barbara Morris of Stafford, a sister-in-law, Joyce Angst of Batavia, his dear friend, Sherm Heywood of Stafford; nieces, nephews, step sisters, and a step brother.

He is the brother of the late Donald Angst and stepson of the late Harold Wood.

There are no calling hours. Friends may attend services at 2 p.m., Sunday, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 6188 Route 5, Stafford, NY 14143. Burial will be in Stafford Rural Cemetery.

Elaine Brinkman

Elba - Mrs. Elaine Brinkman, 59, of Elba, died Saturday, (September 6, 2008) at Crossroads House.

Mrs. Brinkman was born May 20, 1949 in Batavia, a daughter of Loren Balduf, of Stafford and the late Dorothy (Geise) Balduf.

Mrs. Brinkman was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, where she volunteered for the past 35 years. She was the president of the Altar and Rosary Society at the church and also the First Communion teacher. In 2003, she received the St. Joseph's Worker of the Year Award and in 2008 received the St. Patrick's Award.

Surviving along with her father, are her husband, Carl Brinkman, of Elba; three sons, Kevin (Kristine) Brinkman of Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, Brian (Danielle) Brinkman and Nicholas Brinkman, both of Elba; a daughter, Debora (Joel) Pocock of Oakfield; a brother, David (Patricia) Balduf of South Carolina; a sister, Donna (Larry) Stiles of Batavia; seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 65 South Main Street, Elba. Burial will be in Daws Corners Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Crossroads House, P.O. Box 403, Batavia, NY 14021 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. Bruno Joseph Scopano

Batavia - Mr. Bruno Joseph Scopano, age 68, of Batavia, master electronics technician for General Electric in Rochester, died Thursday, June 19, 2008 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

Mr. Scopano was born December 8, 1939 in Batavia, a son of the late Carmen Samuel and Lillian Garrow Scopano.

Mr. Scopano was a member of Resurrection Parish and served with the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife, Rose M. Steffenilla Ladd-Scopano; three daughters, Cynthia (Richard) Rada of Batavia, Carol (Robert) Gruber of Lakeville and Christina Scopano of Batavia; a step-son, Duane Ladd of Olean; a step-daughter, Debra (Tony) Licata of Batavia; a brother, Carmen Scopano of Oakfield; five sisters, Mary Cooke of California, Cecelia Vinuto of Florida, Annette Catanese of Avon, Lillian Pridmore of Georgia and Linda (Donald) Engle of Elba; 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was the brother of the late Fred Besaw, John, Henry and Frank Scopano.

There are no prior calling hours. His Memorial Mass will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at Resurrection Parish - St. Mary's Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Resurrection Parish - St. Mary's Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020.

Mr. Peter A. "PJ" Scalia, II

Batavia - Mr. Peter "PJ" A. Scalia, II, 30, an employee of BJ's in Batavia died Sunday, June 22, 2008 at home.

PJ was born August 27, 1977 in Batavia, a son of Peter A. Scalia and Deborah Hamilton Deni both of Batavia.

He served with the Army and attended Batavia High School. An active member of the Batavia Lions Club he received the prestigious Uplinger Award. The award reads as follows, "distinguished service award presented in recognition for Peter A. Scalia's II unselfish generous service. PJ's pronounced intention to give back to the community is an inspiration to us all." He was studying to be a minister. For the past years PJ did not let his illness get the best of him. He did not quit and was enthused about everything he did.

Along with his parents he is survived by two daughters; Cassandra and Samantha Scalia; one brother; Jason (Staci) Scalia of Tennessee; paternal grandparents, Anthony and Julia Scalia of Batavia and maternal grandmother, Pauline Hamilton of Batavia. He is also survived by aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 E. Main St. Batavia. Services will be private. Memorials may be made to Lions Club Batavia, P.O. Box 456, Batavia, NY 14021 or Mercy Flight, Inc., 100 Amherst Villa Rd., Buffalo, NY 14225.
