Wayne Smith
Medina - Mr. Wayne Smith, 72, of Medina and formerly of Basom, died Saturday, (November 20, 2010) at Orchard Manor, in Medina.
Mr. Smith was born July 23, 1938 in Medina, son of the late Norman and Viola (Quackenbush) Smith.
He is survived by several cousins.
There are no prior calling hours and services will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Corfu. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Carl L. Spikes Sr.
Batavia - Mr. Carl L. Spikes Sr., 51, an employee of Cold Springs Construction in Akron, died Tuesday, (November 16, 2010) at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Spikes was born July 15, 1959 in Pace, MS, the son of David Jones, Sr. of Florida and Oleatha (Olivia) Spikes Brown of Elba.
He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
He was the father of Carl L. Spikes, Jr. Jermaine, Josiah, Christopher, Kayden, Shanda Spikes, Carla Spikes, Hannah Spikes and Leah; brother of Roosevelt Muhammad Jr., Laura Santiago, Naomi Brown and Jannie Brown; nephew of Drew, Levi, Oliver, Melvin, James and Dorothy Spikes and Jennie Sabb. Also surviving are grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was brother of the late Peter J. Greene.
Friends may call on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Main St. Batavia. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at City Church, 210 E. Main St. Batavia. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Elba.Memorials may be made to family.
Maria E. Stoddard
Batavia - Maria E. Stoddard, 69, of Batavia, died Friday, (November 19, 2010) at Sisters of Charity Hospital, in Buffalo.
Mrs. Stoddard was born September 5, 1941 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Alexander and Margaret (Fusco) Sharon.
After her retirement from the V.A. Hospital in Batavia, where she was a housekeeper, Mrs. Stoddard was a teacher's aide at the Genesee County Child Daycare. She loved Halloween, having collected many costumes and also enjoyed garage sales.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Sharon of Grand Island and Justin Stoddard of Bellevue, Washington; a daughter, Margaret Pillo of Batavia; two sisters, Shirley Costello of Florida and Carol (Kenneth) Knoll of Lancaster; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where services will be at 3:00 p.m. also on Sunday. Mary A. Tyler
Batavia - Miss Mary A. Tyler, 87, of Batavia, a high school art teacher in the Elba and later the Batavia School systems from 1952 until her retirement in 1986, died Monday, October 11, 2010 in Boulder, CO.
Miss Tyler was born on September 7, 1923 in Batavia, was a daughter of the late Winfield and Almira Pollard Tyler.
She was a life long member of St. James Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Ladies Altar Guild, the choir, the vestry, and was a Sunday school teacher. During her years as an art teacher she also designed the stage sets for the Horseshoe Lake summer theater productions of the Batavia Players and the Rotary Club annual musicals. Her high school art students helped her to construct these sets. She always encouraged her students to appreciate and enjoy art in its many forms.
Miss Tyler was a graduate of Batavia High School class of 1940. She earned an Associate’s degree in art from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1950 and a BA in art education from the University of Rochester in 1952. She continued taking advanced art classes through the 1950s from Buffalo State College and New York University. Her artwork included paintings, pottery, jewelry, wood, and stone sculptures.
Survivors include 5 nieces, Priscilla Nell (Timothy) Laraway, Mary Tyler (Wayne) Niebch, Suzanne Jaquin, Margaret Tyler, and Elizabeth Tyler (Kevin O’Conner); 2 nephews Walter C. (Rita Elona) and Robert (Patricia Pauly )Tyler; 6 great-nieces and 4 great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister Cornelia, and her brothers Winfield and Walter.
There are no prior calling hours. Friends may attend service at 10:00 AM, Friday, November 26, 2010 at St. James Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in honor of Mary to St. James Church, the Richmond Memorial Library or a charity of your choice. Burial will be in Morganville Cemetery.
Dolores E. Drew
Batavia - Mrs. Dolores E. (Hauser) Drew passed away peacefully, Thursday, (November 25, 2010), at Crossroads House after a brief illness. Dolores lived in Rochester, Niagara Falls, Buffalo and Batavia where she and her husband, Fred, owned Batavia Insurance and Realty Center for many years. She was a member of the Ladies of Kiwanis, DAV Auxiliary and the Bishop’s Committee.
Survived by her husband, Fred A. Drew of 65 years, loving mother of Michael J. Drew, James W. (Peggy) Drew, Jean M. (John) Vander Linden, Patricia Drew, Mary (John) Squires and Helen A. (Nellie) Drew- Meosky (Paul Meosky, grandmother to several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and sister of Joan Francis Houser, SSJ and aunt to several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her parents Joseph W. and Anna V. Hauser and siblings Joseph J. Hauser and Joan M. Hauser.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Main St., Batavia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Nov. 29th at 9:30 a.m. at Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph Church, 303 E. Main St., Batavia. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Doris E. Fuller
Byron - Mrs. Doris E. Fuller, 86, a retired employee of GTE Sylvania, died Monday, (November 29, 2010) at United Memorial Medical Center.
Mrs. Fuller was born April 13, 1924 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Paul and Emily Waldron Nicholson.
She was a member of Byron Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Botts-Fiorito American Legion Post in LeRoy.
Survivors include two sons, Leonard (Patricia) A. Fuller of Rochester and Leland (Suzanne) Fuller, Jr. of Delaware and a sister, Gary (Linda) Nicholson of Penfield. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was the wife of the late Leland Fuller, Sr. who died in 1977. Mrs. Fuller was the sister and sister-in-law of the late Paul (Ruth) Nicholson and Marion (Monroe) Ratliff.
Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 E. Main St.. Services with Pastor James Renfrew officiating, will be at 10:00 am, Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Morganville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family to be distributed to various charities.
Margaret E. Smith
Batavia - Mrs. Margaret E. Smith, 91, died Thursday, (November 11, 2010) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness.
Mrs. Smith was born March 24, 1919 in Erie, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late John and Anna (Strong) Emling.
A member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, she enjoyed gardening and was very proud of obtaining the ranking of Life Master in the card game of Bridge.
Survivors include a son, David Smith of Florida; four daughters, Gail (Joseph) Raziano of Florida, Sybil Galliford of Batavia, Susan (Peter) Balonek of Elba and Leslie (Rito) Cordaro of Pavilion; two brothers, Richard Emling and Warren (Rose) Emling, both of Erie, Pennsylvania; three sisters, Norma Squires, Sylvia Johnson and Betty Weber all of Erie, Pennsylvania Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great- grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Lawrence Smith died in 1985. She is a sister of the late Charlotte Hoffstetter, Mary Ann Haley and Robert Emling.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2:00 to 3:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 31 Washington Ave., Batavia where services will follow at 3:00. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Elba. John G. Spaeth
Akron - Mr. John G. Spaeth, 95, of Akron, a test specialist at Niagara Mohawk Power Co., in Batavia, died Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Greenfield Health and Rehabilitation Center, in Lancaster.
Mr. Spaeth was born October 22, 1915 in Cheektowaga, a son of the late Christian and Sarah (Bennet) Spaeth.
He served during World War II with the Army, was a member of Oakfield United Methodist Church and a past long time member of the Akron United Methodist Church. He traveled to 49 states and was a member of the Avion Travel Club, American Legion, Glenn S. Loomis Post #332, was active in yearly reunions of the 876 a/B Engineer Aviation Battalion and enjoyed electronics.
His wife, Viola (Harfman) Spaeth died in 2003.
Survivors include his son-in-law, James Houghton of Depew; 2 grandchildren, Rebecca (Matthew) Houghton Davidson of Rochester and Andrew (Theresa) Houghton of Attica; a brother, Christian Spaeth of Clayton; 2 sisters, Ellen Weiss of Buffalo and Barbara Wight of Akron, 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Joan Spaeth Houghton who died in 2003 and brother of the late David Spaeth and Charles Spaeth.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 7, 2010 at Oakfield United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 101 John James Audubon Pkwy West, Amherst, NY 14228 or to Oakfield United Methodist Church, 2 S. Main St., Oakfield, NY 14125. Arrangements were completed by Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home of Oakfield. Burial will be in Cary Cemetery in Oakfield.
Earl K. Tatro
Batavia - Mr. Earl K. Tatro, 86, of Batavia, died Tuesday, (October 26, 2010) at home while under the care of Homecare and Hospice.
Mr. Tatro was born January 19, 1924 in Vergennes, Vermont, a son of the late Leo and Phyllis (Hall) Tatro.
A veteran, he served with the United States Navy and was a stone crusher at the former Genesee-LeRoy Stone in Stafford. Mr. Tatro enjoyed wood crafting, making model ships and gardening.
Survivors include his children, Earlene (Louis) Howard of Stockdale, Texas, Dannis Blanco of Atlanta, Georgia, William Blanco of Niagara Falls, Gail Carpenter of Batavia, Sandra (Scott) Ohlson of East Bethany, Lavine Scroger of Taylorsville, North Carolina, Bronco Blanco of Batavia, Jesse (Julie) Blanco of Batavia and Angela Blanco of Batavia; 34 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Tatro is predeceased by his wife, Ardella Tatro and two brothers, Arlyn Tatro and Leo Tatro Jr.
Calling hours are Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Oakfield United Methodist Church, 2 South Main Street, Oakfield, where services will be at 10:00 a.m. also on Saturday. Burial will be in Reed Cemetery, Oakfield. Memorials may be made to the family.
Mrs. Lillian L. Wilson
Batavia- Lillian L. Wilson, age 93, passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Batavia Nursing Home where she had been a resident for the past four years.
She was born on July 15, 1917 in Hardinville, Illinois a daughter of the late John and Daisy (Shipman) Higgins.
On June 11, 1937, Lillian married Walter Wilson in Hardinville, Illinois. They were married 55 years before Walter's death in 1995.
Surviving are a daughter Jacqueline and a son-in-law Kenneth Witt of Batavia; a sister Pat Butcher and a brother-in-law Bob Butcher of Robinson, Illinois, three grandsons and their wives, 6 great grand children, 2 nieces, and 2 nephews.
Lillian was pre-deceased by two brothers John Junior and Harold Higgins.
