Mrs. Esther Evelyn Phelps Schaal

Oakfield and Winter Haven, FL- Mrs. Esther Evelyn Phelps Schaal, 95, of Oakfield and Winter Haven, FL, a Registered Nurse at the former Genesee Memorial Hospital, in Batavia for 12 years prior to her retirement in 1985, died Thursday, September 23, 2010 while under hospice care in Auburndale, FL.

Mrs. Schaal was born May 6, 1915 in Pembroke, NY, the daughter of the late Dennis and Mary (Klotzbach) Phelps.

She was a member of Indian Falls United Methodist Church, associate member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Florida since 1985, East Pembroke Grange and was the former secretary of the Genesee County Fair.

Her husband, Warren R. Schaal, died August 25, 2004.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie (Lee) Schoenthal of Corfu; 2 sons, Dean (Jane) Schaal of Oakfield and Dale (Mary) Schaal of Winterhaven, FL; a brother, Wayne (Myra) Phelps of Basom; 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the grandmother of the late Cherie Schoenthal and sister of the late Revere Phelps, Maurice Phelps and Virgil Phelps.

Friends may call on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield, and Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Indian Falls United Methodist Church where services will immediately follow at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to Indian Falls United Methodist Church, 7908 Allegany Road, Corfu, NY 14036. Burial will be in Alabama Cemetery, Alabama, NY.

Mavis E. Patterson

Batavia - Mrs. Mavis E. Patterson, 89, of Batavia, a nutritionist at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Batavia for 20 years, died October 5, 2010 at the Batavia Nursing Home.

Mrs. Patterson was born April 22, 1921 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Harold and Blanche Raab Griswold.

She worked as a nurse at the former St. Jerome Hospital prior to working at Cornell Cooperative and following her time at Cornell Cooperative, she worked as a secretary at Orleans Community Action in Batavia.

She was a member of the Zonta Club, American Legion Post No. 332. She enjoyed reading, loved to play bingo and was a fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres.

Her husband, Reubon O. Patterson, died January 8, 1988.

Survivors include one son, Keith O. Patterson; a foster son, John (Judy) Ladd of Batavia; a brother, Gary (Beverly) Griswold of Syracuse; grandchildren, Melissa Metcalf of Batavia, Kelly Patterson, Kurtis (Angela) Patterson, Aaron Patterson and Brett Patterson, both currently serving with the United States Navy and John Ladd, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Jenna Kent, Megan Ladd, Kadin Patterson, Allison Patterson and Makayla Davis; her dear friend, Ann Squires of Jacksonville, Florida and nieces and nephews.

She is the mother of the late Lucinda Patterson Metcalf.

There are no prior calling hours. Her services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Memorials may be made to Cornell Cooperative Extension, 420 East Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020. Burial will be in West Bethany Cemetery.

Henry H. Pape

Bergen - Henry H. Pape, 59, of Bergen, died Friday, October 1, 2010 at his home.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 51 S. Lake Street, Bergen.

Josephine Pacer

Batavia - Mrs. Josephine Pacer, 86, of Batavia, a retired inspector at Oliver's Candies, died Friday, (October 15, 2010) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Mrs. Pacer was born August 18, 1924 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Louis and Rose Scammaca DeFino.

She was a member of Ascension Parish - St. Anthony's Church.

Survivors include three sons, Robert (Susan) Pacer of Stafford, Martin Pacer of Akron and Alan (Eileen) Pacer of Tennessee; grandchildren, Kevin Pacer of LeRoy, Kathleen Pacer of Cleveland, Martin (Danielle) Pacer of Corfu, Sarah Pacer of Clearwater, Florida, Andrew Pacer, Stacia Pacer and Vincent Pacer, all of Naples, Florida; great grandchildren, Annabel Rumenapp and Michael Pacer; a sister, Jennie Hawks of Batavia; two sisters-in-law, Alice (Frank) Anders of Medina and Rita (Homer) Warden of Akron and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Arthur F. Pacer died in 1997. She is the grandmother of the late Jason Pacer, sister of the late Salvatore "Spats" DeFino, Mary Klute, Anne LaFarnara, Millie Povorski and Betty Margarine and sister-in-law of the late Felicia Lotz and Donald Pacer.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main St. Batavia. Her Mass of Christian Burial will at Ascension Parish - St. Anthony's Church, 122 Liberty St. on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery Memorials may be made to the family for distribution to various charities.

Mrs. Virginia M. "Ginger" Mooney

Oakfield - Mrs. Virginia M. Mooney, 78, of Oakfield, switchboard operator at United Memorial Medical Center for 35 years, died Thursday, September 30, 2010 at the New York State Veteran's Home.

Mrs. Mooney was born July 28, 1932 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Edward and Merle Roberts Base.

A member of St. Padre Pio Parish - St. Cecilia's Worship Site, Mrs. Mooney used to enjoy bowling. Following her retirement from the hospital, she went back to volunteer her time. She loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always looked forward to planting her flowers around her driveway.

Her husband, Ronald J. Mooney, died July 26, 2003.

Survivors include two sons, Robert (Mary) MacIntyre of Stafford and Donald "Sam" (Amy) Mooney of Oakfield; three daughters, Terri L. Whiting of Oakfield, Cindy (Dennis) Hunt of Argyle, NY and Shelley Buckley of Glens Falls; two sisters, Marlene (George) Arnold of Batavia and Betty (Don) Currier of Elba; eleven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

She is the grandmother of the late Ethan Buckley.

There are no prior calling hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 2010 at St. Padre Pio Parish, St. Cecilia's Site, 56 Maple Avenue, Oakfield. Burial will be in St. Cecilia’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Padre Pio Parish, 56 Maple Avenue, Oakfield, New York 14125 or to the American Cancer Society, 101 John James Audubon Parkway West, Amherst, New York 14228.

Kenneth James McKenrick

Byron - Mr. Kenneth James McKenrick, 73, of Byron, died Saturday, (September 25, 2010) at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester.

Mr. McKenrick was born September 15, 1937 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Smith and Mary (Rafferty) McKenrick.

A veteran with the United States Army, he served time in Korea. During his time with the Army, Mr. McKenrick attended the Signal School, where he served as cryptographer. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal/Expert M-1. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was recognized by the New York State Big Buck Club in 1995, earning a 10 point Whitetail Buck Recognition. On July 26, 1991, Mr. McKenrick was awarded the Heroism Award by the Western New York Volunteer Fireman's Association for saving the life of another fireman. He was a member of the American Legion, lifetime Member of the Byron Fire Department, past member of St. Michael's Church, current member of St. Brigid's Church, served as the Byron Town Supervisor for four years and was retired from Western Union in Rochester after 27 years. He carried himself with a strong tradition and faith in the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. McKenrick was well known and respected in the community. He took on many leadership positions, but above all he will be best remembered for his devotion to his loving wife, five children and his growing family.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes (Tutokey) McKenrick of Byron, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage last fall on November 26, 2009; five children, Kenneth David (Janine) McKenrick of Batavia, Timothy Joseph (Geraldine) McKenrick of Elba, Tamara (E. James) Worthington of Byron, Kevin Lee (Kelly) McKenrick of Bergen and Kathy Marie (David) Seweryniak of Pembroke; grandchildren, Kenneth James McKenrick, Michael McKenrick, Kaylynn McKenrick, Alyssa McKenrick, E. James Worthington III, Danyelle (Nicholas) Scarborough, Brianna Worthington, Matthew McKenrick, Andrew McKenrick, Sara Seweryniak, Rachel Seweryniak and Brian Seweryniak; a great-grandchild, Gunnar Timothy Scarborough; three brothers, Daniel McKenrick of Pine City, Terrance (Donna) McKenrick of Pennsylvania and Boyd (Margaret) McKenrick of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

He is a grandfather of the late Timothy J. McKenrick.

Calling hours are Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Prayers will be held at the funeral home Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 p.m. at St. Brigid's Church, 18 Gibson Street, Bergen. Burial will be in North Byron Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family to be distributed to various charities.

Shirley J. Cuozzo

Batavia - Mrs. Shirley J. Cuozzo, 85, of Batavia, died Friday, (October 1, 2010) at her daughter’s home in Cheektowaga, while under the care of Hospice Buffalo.

Mrs. Cuozzo was born July 12, 1925 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late John Gibney and Florence (Slade) Casper. She was also predeceased by her step-father Anthony Casper.

She was a life long member of Ascension Parish-St. Anthony’s Church where she belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society. Mrs. Cuozzo enjoyed drawing and took several classes at the local community college. As a child she acquired her love of birds from her step-father and her knack for flowers from her mother. Even though she was of Irish decent she learned to love the Italian ways after marrying her husband and it was not uncommon to find her making homemade manicotti, ravioli and pizzelles in her kitchen. Food was only one way that she expressed her love to family and friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Michele (Ernest) Wilson of Cheektowaga; two granddaughters, Maureen (Scott) Mahland of Goode, Virginia and Amanda Myers of Memphis, Tennessee; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Mahland, Avery Mahland and Kaelyn Mahland; two brothers, Paul Casper and Emory (Blanche) Casper, both of Batavia; three sisters, Joyce Blackwell of Houston, Texas, Zita Stornelli of Melbourne, Florida and Cecilia (Merril) Mabon of Castile and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Carmen Cuozzo, died June 7, 1990. She is also predeceased by seven brothers and sisters.

Calling hours are on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia. Prayers will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Ascension Parish - St. Anthony's Church, 122 Liberty Street, Batavia. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Hospice Foundation of WNY, 225 Como Park Boulevard, P.O. Box 590, Buffalo, N.Y. 14240 or the American Cancer Society, 101 John James Audubon Parkway West, Amherst, N.Y. 14228.

Mrs. Keith Ella Olga Hill Johnson

BATAVIA - Keith Ella Olga Hill Johnson, 99, entered into eternal life on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at United Memorial Medical Center, Batavia. She was born June 29, 1911, in Buffalo, New York, the seventh child of William & Cassie Groh Hill.

She was a graduate of Buffalo’s Lafayette High School and The University of Buffalo, where she received her bachelor’s degree in English. While at the university, she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority and Mortar Board Honor Society. She also attended the master’s degree program at the Breadloaf School of English at Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont.

She was an English teacher in Pike, East Pembroke and Clarence, New York, prior to her marriage to Dr. David Barent Johnson, of Batavia, on November 9, 1940. He predeceased her in 2002.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and with her husband, taught several adult Bible studies. She was also a member and past President of the Genesee County Medical Auxiliary, a 50 year member and Past President of Wednesday Study Club, Conversation Class, Genesee Memorial Hospital Guild and Salvation Army Advisory Board. She performed with early Batavia Players and Rotary Shows. Her hobbies included weaving, writing poetry and inspirational music.

She is survived by three daughters: Corinne (Don) Iwanicki of Batavia, Juliet (Dean) Arnold of State College, Pennsylvania, and Heather (James) Kimbriel of Batavia; also seven grandchildren: Scott (Elvia) Iwanicki of Tucson, Arizona; Heather (Mitchell) Clark of Broadbeach, Australia; Hugh (Yong Ping) Iwanicki, of Annandale, Virginia; LT. Lara Myers of Jacksonville, Florida; Tamara (James) Schulz of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; Andrea Kimbriel of Amherst; David Kimbriel of Batavia; and a step-granddaughter, Margaret (Mark) Higgins, of State College, Pennsylvania. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, three step-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A step-grandson, David Arnold, predeceased her.

She is survived by her sister, Esther (Mrs. George) Young of Batavia. She was a sister of the late Dr. Ernest Hill, Dr. William Oakley Hill, Norwood M. Hill, Cassie Hill Lawton, and Dr. Joseph M. Hill.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, New York. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 East Main Street, Batavia. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or United Memorial Medical Center, 127 North St., Batavia NY 14020.

Matthew Lieberman

Batavia - Matthew Lieberman, 23, of Batavia died Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, in Buffalo following a courageous battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Matthew was born July 22, 1987 in Buffalo, a son of Linda Lee Terrell Lieberman of Batavia and the late Howard Lieberman.

Fighting his cancer for the entirety of his senior year, Matthew graduated on time with a Pre-Medical Bachelor’s of Science focusing on Sports Medicine from Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA. Despite his battle, Matthew remained a committed leader on campus as president of the Sports Medicine Student Association.

Matthew’s love for sports extended outside the classroom. He was a longstanding fan of the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees, and would watch football and baseball games as often as he could. His knowledge of and skill in technology and computer science proved his talent knew no bounds. Nor did his heart: he loved dogs, cared for his family and was dedicated to his beloved fiancée, Jenelle Remington.

Surviving along with his mother are his siblings, Joshua Lieberman of New York City and Alicia Lieberman of Batavia; his fiancée, Jenelle Remington of Penfield; several aunts and uncles including, Teri and David Tanenhaus of Binghamton, NY and Marcia Lieberman of Lexington, MA and several cousins and friends.

Friends may call on Friday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, Harvester Avenue, Batavia. Memorials may be made to the Michael Napoleone Memorial Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 267, Batavia, NY 14021 or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA. 01202.
