Norman E. Fagnan

Oakfield - Mr. Norman E. Fagnan, 72, of Oakfield, died Monday, (September 20, 2010) at home while under the care of HomeCare and Hospice.

Mr. Fagnan was born March 27, 1938 in Buffalo, the son of the late Norman and Catherine (Hutchins) Fagnan.

Mr. Fagnan was a former superintendent at Oakfield - Alabama Central School. He was a member of Saint Padre Pio Parish - St. Cecilia's Church, where he sang in the church choir, was a lector and belonged to the Men's Group. Mr. Fagnan was also a member of the Oakfield Lions Club, GCASA, Western New York School Study Council, New York State Council of School Administrators and was a past trustee and president of the Haxton Memorial Library. He enjoyed reading, playing tennis, traveling and was an avid sports fan.

Survivors include his wife, Alice (Zynczak) Fagnan of Oakfield, whom he married July 2, 1960; a daughter, Michele (Guy) Boretti of Glenville; a son, Michael (Ana) Fagnan of Amherst; three grandchildren, Melina Boretti, Sofia Fagnan and Christopher Fagnan; two sisters, Kathy (Ken) Melston of Rockwall, Texas and Mary (Michael) Krickminer of Fairport; a sister-in-law, Geraldine Parrinello of Huntington and several nieces and nephews.

He is the father of the late Leslie Ann Fagnan.

Calling hours are Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield. Prayers at the funeral home Saturday at 9:00 a.m. will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30, also on Saturday, at Saint Padre Pio Parish - St. Cecilia's Site, 56 Maple Avenue, Oakfield. Burial will be in St. Cecilia's Cemetery, Oakfield. Memorials may be made to Saint Padre Pio Parish - St. Cecilia's Site, 56 Maple Avenue, Oakfield, N.Y. 14125 or Haxton Memorial Library, 3 North Pearl Street, Oakfield, N.Y. 14125.

Mr. Charles J. Fiorentino, Jr.

Batavia - Mr. Charles J. Fiorentino, Jr., 57, of Batavia, died Thursday, September 30, 2010 at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

Mr. Fiorentino was born March 7, 1953 in Batavia, the son of the late Charles J. Sr. and Mary Pcionek Fiorentino.

An avid sports lover, Mr. Fiorentino coached basketball and baseball for many years and assisted in running sports clinics. He was a history and car enthusiast and kept statistics for Elba sports for many years.

Surviving are his sister, Diane Fiorentino of Batavia; his nephew, Chris (Jennifer) Juliano of Batavia; his great-niece, Alyssa Juliano of Batavia; an aunt, Theresa Hartman of Attica and his godmother, Sister Joan Sobala of Rochester.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Batavia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elba Sports Boosters, P.O. Box 363, Elba, New York 14058.

Mr. LaVerne S. "Butch" Hale

Batavia - Mr. LaVerne S. “Butch” Hale, 90, of Batavia, retired inspector at Doehler-Jarvis Division of National Lead in Batavia, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010 under the care of HomeCare & Hospice.

Mr. Hale was born July 24, 1920 in Oakfield, a son of the late Howard L. and Margaret A. Rutter Hale.

He was a member of Resurrection Parish - St. Mary's Church, the quarter century club at Doehler-Jarvis, the Good Sam Club and the former Moose Lodge in Batavia. An avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, he volunteered at the Senior Center and Msgr. Kirby Lunch Program. Following his retirement from Doehler-Jarvis in 1975, Mr. & Mrs. Hale resided in Florida from 1979-1993.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years Norma L. Foster Hale whom he married September 16, 1944; a son, Richard L. (Sheila) Hale of Batavia; two daughters, Margaret (Frank) Zambito of Elba and Patricia Diaz of Batavia; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Gordon) Amidon and Doris Pask, both of Batavia and Peggy Foster of Crofton, Maryland; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Larry (Sandi) Hale.

He is the father of the late Daniel F. Hale who died in 1978 and brother of the late Lawrence Hale.

There are no prior calling hours. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Resurrection Parish - St. Mary's Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia. Memorials may be made to Lake Plains Dialysis Center, 587 East Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020 or HomeCare & Hospice, 550 East Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Roy MacConnell

Batavia - Mr. Roy MacConnell, 93, of Batavia, died Sunday, (September 12, 2010) at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

Mr. MacConnell was born March 1, 1917, in Bergen, a son of the late Fred and Mildred (Fuller) MacConnell.

He was a utility engineer at Eastman Kodak Company for 34 years. After his retirement from Kodak, he worked at Byron-Bergen Central School for 13 years. A lifetime farmer in the Bergen area, Mr. MacConnell most recently volunteered at the New York State Veteran’s Home in Batavia.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Shirley (Carpenter) MacConnell of Batavia; a son, Greg MacConnell of Plattsburgh; grandchildren, Blaise MacConnell of New Hampshire, Dustin MacConnell of New Hampshire, Patrick and his wife Cathlene MacConnell of Charleston, South Carolina and Sarah and her husband Owen Fussey of Plattsburgh; two great-grandchildren, Aislynn and Avery MacConnell; a daughter-in-law, Sandy (Redick) MacConnell of New Hampshire and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. MacConnell is predeceased by his son, Brad MacConnell and brothers and sisters.

There are no prior calling hours and services will be private. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the North Bergen Presbyterian Church, 7068 North Bergen Road, Bergen, N.Y. 14416.

Mrs. Edna A. Miller

Batavia - Mrs. Edna A. Miller, 77, of Batavia, retired school teacher at Oakfield-Alabama Central School in Oakfield, died Friday, September 10, 2010 at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Miller was born December 28, 1932 in Danville, Illinois, the daughter of the late Charles William and Florence Gruber Miller, granddaughter of the late Edna Gruber and sister of the late William (Ann) Miller.

A 1972 graduate of Geneseo State College, she was a member of the New York State Retired Teacher's Association, New York State United Teachers Association, the National Education Association and a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She began her teaching career at St. Joseph's School where she taught for three years and retired from Oakfield-Alabama Central School in 1992 after 20 years. She also worked at Genesee Community College where she taught Secondary Summer School, CETA Program, SAT preparation courses, an ABE Instructor and served as an English tutor.

A member of St. Joseph's Church, she was a CCD instructor, a counter for the church and a member of the Sodality. She volunteered her time at RAP, the March of Dimes, Meals on Wheels, PAVE - Ministry of Concern, Crossroads House and as a Literacy Volunteer.

Survivors include two loving sons, Alfred Panepinto and Russell (Renee') Panepinto, both of Batavia; adoring grandchildren, Michael Panepinto, Rachel Panepinto and Josie Panepinto, all of Batavia and several nieces and nephews.

There are no prior calling hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 18th at 10 a.m. at Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph's Church, 301 East Main Street, Batavia. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Crossroads House, P.O. Box 403, Batavia, New York 14021.

Eileen K. Forti

Batavia - Mrs. Eileen K. Forti, 79, of Batavia, died Monday, (September 6, 2010) at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Forti was born October 16, 1930 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Paul and Florence (Gallagher) Kelly.

She was a member of Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph’s Church and she loved her cats.

Survivors include three sons, Paul (Linda) Forti of LeRoy, Joseph Forti of Arlington, Virginia and Louis (Michele) Forti of Wyoming; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Her husband of 54 years, Joseph Michael Forti, died April 30, 2010.

There are no prior calling hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph’s Site, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. Entombment will be in St. Joseph's Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Volunteers For Animals, P.O. Box 1621, Batavia, N.Y. 14021 or Sisters of Mercy, 625 Abbott Road, Buffalo, N.Y. 14220.

Mrs. Marion I. Goodwin

Batavia - Mrs. Marion I. Goodwin, 84, of Batavia, retired office manager for Prudential Life Insurance Company in Batavia, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Goodwin was born July 16, 1926 in Byron, a daughter of the late Floyd and Leora Gebhardt Blood.

A longtime member of the Assembly of God Church in Batavia, she was very involved in her church's activities and her "church family". She enjoyed doing word search puzzle and needlepoint.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne (Marlene) Goodwin of Henrietta and Douglas Goodwin of Batavia; her grandson, Douglas Goodwin, Jr. of Batavia; her brother, Myron (Jesse) Blood of Newfane; two sisters, Frances Samborski of Rochester and Florence Jannain of Batavia; dear friends Patricia and Francis Brunner and several nieces and nephews.

She is the mother of the late Paul E. Goodwin who died September 27, 2002 and David R. Goodwin who died January 10, 2007 and sister of the late Harold F. Blood and Catherine Sage.

Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Services will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Batavia Assembly of God, 24 North Spruce Street, Batavia. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery, Byron. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Assembly of God Church, 24 North Spruce Street, Batavia, New York 14020.

Carl D. Luker

Oakfield - Carl D. Luker, 80, of Oakfield, died Friday, September 3, 2010 at his residence in Oakfield while in the care of Homecare and Hospice.

Mr. Luker was born April 20, 1930 in Robinson, PA, a son of the late Floyd and Marie (Frain) Luker.

He retired as the mine General Foreman from the US Gypsum Co. in 1989 after 35 years of service. He enjoyed collecting model cars, woodworking, home projects and experiencing life with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Irene E. (Montgomery) Luker whom he married July 14, 1948 in New Florence, PA; his 4 children, Daniel (Paula) Luker and Diane (Richard) Stafford, both of Oakfield, Tammy (Richard) Way of Medina and Cindy Luker of WI; 2 brothers, George Luker of Byron, and Wayne Luker of PA; 2 sisters, Velma Montie of MI and Jean Drolette of Ontario. He was the proud grandfather of Kimberly (Edward) Staniszewski of Batavia, Jeffrey (Sue) Luker of Alexander, Jennifer Stafford of Oakfield, Rebecca Stafford of Elba, Caroline Way, April Way, Rikki Jo Way and Lynette Way, all of Medina, and Michael Bell of WI; 9 great-grandchildren, Emily, Joseph, Nathaniel, Katarina, Angelina, Ayesha, Kaiden, Raquel and Emery.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Anna Mae Clark and Lauretta Luker and a granddaughter, Rachel Way.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, at First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Homecare & Hospice, 550 E. Main St., Batavia, NY 14020 or First United Methodist Church, 8221 Lewiston Road, Batavia, NY 14020. Burial will be in Cary Cemetery, Oakfield.

Billy Joe Wendt

Batavia - Mr. Billy Joe Wendt, 81, retired president of R. A. Haitz Roofing, died Friday, June 10, 2011 at home.

Mr. Wendt was born February 14, 1930 in Wichita, Kansas, the son of the late William and Lena Troupe Wendt.

Mr. Wendt has been associated with the R. A. Haitz Roofing Company since 1958. He purchased the company and became President in 1983. His son, Rick, became President in 1996 and Mr. Wendt continued to work with the company up until his death. He was the town of Batavia Zoning Officer from 1976 to 1993 and served with the Army from 1955 to 1957.

His wife of 46 years, Peggy Philipps Wendt died in 1996. He was the brother of the late LeRoy Wendt and Anna Mae McKinney and grandfather of the late Ann Elizabeth Severino.

He was the father of Rick (Lori) Wendt and Sheri (Joseph) Severino, both of Batavia; Grandfather of Philip (Tricia) Severino, Michelle (Antonino) Falleti and Christopher Wendt and Great-grandfather of Joseph & Angelina Severino. Also survived by his faithful dog, Rudy.

Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Main St. Batavia, where services will be at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, June 14, 2011 with Patti Rowbottom officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Homecare & Hospice, 550 E. Main St. or the Genesee County Animal Shelter, W. Main St. Rd., both Batavia, NY 14020. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.

R. A. Haitz Roofing Co. will be open on Monday, closed on Tuesday and will re-open on Wednesday.
