Mrs. Ida Zipkin

Batavia – Mrs. Ida Zipkin, 89, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Jewish Home of Rochester.

Mrs. Zipkin was born July 12, 1921 in Rochester, the daughter of the late Israel and Tillie Gordon Cohen.

Her husband Phillip Zipkin, died in 1999.

Mrs. Zipkin was a member of the Temple Emanu-El of Batavia and its’ Sisterhood. She also was a member of the former Genesee Memorial Hospital League and volunteered many hours at the snack shop.

Survivors include a son, Arne (Kathryn) Zipkin of Batavia; a daughter, Barbara Jones of California; a brother, David (Miriam) Cohen of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Miriam Bernstein and Lillian Schiffren, both of Rochester and 5 grandchildren, Tal (Andrea) Jones, Scott (Amy) Jones, Benjamin (Martha) Zipkin, Jennifer Zipkin and Steven Zipkin. Also surviving are 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the grandmother of the late Adam Jones and sister of the late Yetta Harris, Esther Harris and Sylvia Benjamin.

There will be no prior visitation. Graveside services will be 1:00 pm, Friday at the Elmwood Cemetery in Batavia. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Temple Emanu-El, 124 Bank St. Batavia, NY 14020 or the Jewish Home of Rochester, 2021 Winton Rd. South, Rochester, NY 14618.

Rose Anna Desjardins

Oakfield - Rose Anna Desjardins, 93, of Oakfield, passed away Friday, August 19, 2011 at Genesee County Nursing Home, in Batavia.

Mrs. Desjardins was born October 2, 1917 in Fort Coulonge, Quebec, the daughter of the late John and Rosalee (Bertrand) St. Jean.

She emigrated to the United States from Quebec, Canada on July 23, 1955. She was a housewife in Oakfield where she raised her children. She enjoyed spending her summer months at Fort Coulonge, Quebec, Canada at her summer home. Rose Anna will rest there now with her beloved husband and family.

Au revoir, Ma Ma

Her husband, Oswald F. Desjardins, passed away in 1999.

Survivors include 6 children, Mona (Gary) Sulimowicz, Frank (Darlene) Desjardins and Richard (Pam) Desjardins all of Oakfield, John Desjardins and Annette Desjardins, both of Batavia and Nancy (Joseph) Richthammer of Basom; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She had 3 sisters and 5 brothers - 4 are still living. All of her siblings remained in Canada throughout their lifetimes - Rose Anna was the only one to leave.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Aug 23 at 7 pm at Alabama Full Gospel Fellowship, 5329 S. Gravel Rd, Medina, NY - Rt 63 just north of Alabama Center. Arrangements were completed by Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, Oakfield. Memorials may be made to the family. Burial will be in Fort Coulonge, Quebec.

Muriel Hammond

Batavia - Muriel Hammond, 89, of Batavia, died Saturday, (August 6, 2011) at the United Memorial Medical Center.

She was born February 10, 1922 in Michigan, the daughter of the late Rev. Burton A. and Edna (Benning) Hammond.

A member of the First Baptist Church of Batavia, she enjoyed music, playing the piano, writing poetry, knitting, crocheting and listening to the birds. She also sponsored children in third world countries and was a switchboard operator at the New York State School For The Blind in Batavia.

Survivors include a niece, Patricia Diliberto and a sister-in-law, Sarah Hammond, both of Leicester.

She is the sister of the late Wesley B. Hammond.

There are no prior calling hours. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Batavia, 306 East Main Street, Batavia. Burial will be in East Bethany Cemetery, East Bethany. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Batavia, 306 East Main Street, Batavia, NY 14020 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Kathryn (Heveron) O'Geen

Batavia - Mrs. Mary Kathryn O'Geen, 46, of Batavia, died Thursday (September 15, 2011) at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

Mrs. O'Geen was born May 13, 1965 in Batavia, a daughter of James Heveron of East Pembroke and the late Mary Ann (Tehan) Heveron.

Mrs. O’Geen, a graduate of Notre Dame High School and Genesee Community College, was a member of Resurrection Parish and a registered nurse at United Memorial Medical Center. She was an extremely kind and giving person who found fulfillment in helping and caring for others. She was an avid reader and enjoyed baking and decorating cakes, especially for the children in the family.

Survivors include her loving husband, Fran O’Geen of Batavia; a son, Nicholas O’Geen of Batavia; three sisters, Eileen (Thomas) Boncore of Hamburg, Beth (Michael) Reimer of Batavia and Maureen (Thomas) Notaro of Lancaster; nieces and nephews, Julianna Boncore, Dominic Boncore, Morgan Reimer, Lauren Reimer, Aiden Reimer, Camden Reimer and Adriana Notaro; uncles and aunts, Bruce and Jeanette Tehan of Batavia, Bradley and Sheila Rogers of Batavia and Brian and Ann Heveron of Massachusetts; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Francis and Chip O’Geen of LeRoy. Mrs. O’Geen is also survived by her many loving cousins.

She is predeceased by her grandparents, Frank and Kathryn Tehan and James and Mary Heveron; her brother, James and her sister Sheila.

Family and friends may call on Sunday from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Mary’s mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Resurrection Parish-St. Joseph’s Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. Entombment will be in St. Joseph’s Mausoleum, Batavia. Memorials may be made to the family.

Richard F. Sharpstene

Bergen - Richard F. Sharpstene, 89, of Bergen, a tool and die maker at Roger's Associates Tool & Die Co., in Rochester, died Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Sharpstene was born May 12, 1922 in Clare, NY, a son of the late Charles and Jessie (Shaw) Sharpstene.

He was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Rochester and enjoyed cooking, canning and his vegetable garden.

He is predeceased by his wife, Jean (Schenley) Sharpstene.

Survivors include 17 children, Donald & Marge Sharpstene, Marilyn Wagner, the late Nancy Sichterman, Diana Lippa, Linda DePasquali, Veronica Shanley, the late Richard J. Sharpstene, Regina Pape, Julie & Robert Prince, Lorna Campbell, Melinda Ralston, Noreen Burdick, Crystal and Randolph Pape, James & Kelly Sharpstene, Michelle & Ed Garland, Lisa Sharpstene and Tim & Tina Sharpstene; 69 grandchildren, 103 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren; 1 surviving brother Rex & Joan Sharpstene Life Time Personal and Loving Friendship with Debbie Clyde, Carl Turner, Tom Ralston and niece Charlene & Leo Shampine including many nieces & nephews.

Friends may call on Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 51 S. Lake St., Bergen. His Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Church, 44 Lake St., LeRoy, NY 14482. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. Burial will be in Creekside Cemetery, Churchville, NY.

Eleanor J. Shuknecht

Elba - Mrs. Eleanor J. Shuknecht, 79, of Elba, school teacher in the Elba Central School District until her retirement in 1988, died Monday, September 19, 2011 at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Shuknecht was born November 26, 1931 in Oakfield, a daughter of the late Charles and Ruth Lewis Sharp.

She was a member of Elba United Methodist Church and a 1953 graduate of Brockport State College. She was a member of the Genesee County Retired Teacher's Association, New York State Retired Teacher's Association and Western New York Draft Horse Association. She enjoyed bowling, bingo and knitting.

Her husband, LaVerne J. Shuknecht, died in 1988.

She is survived by two sons, Elton G. (Colleen) Shuknecht and Lynn T. (Bonnie) Shuknecht, both of Elba; a step-son, Lee N. (Joan) Shuknecht of Elba; five grandchildren, Christopher Shuknecht, Katherine Shuknecht, Alex Shuknecht, Eric Shuknecht, and Adam Shuknecht; four step-grandchildren, Troy Shuknecht, Dale Shuknecht, Marc Shuknecht and Wendy Shuknecht; two brothers, Clayton (Helen) Sharp of Oakfield and Willard (Jean) Sharp of Gerradstown, West Virginia; a sister-in-law, Eva Sharp of Byron; seven step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Edward Sharp, Mary Louise Ives and Elizabeth Shuknecht and sister-in-law of the late Doris Sharp.

Friends may call on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elba United Methodist Church, 8 Chapel Street, Elba, New York 14058. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Elba.

Mrs. Shirley E. Stafford

Churchville - Shirley E. Stafford, 67, of Churchville, died Friday, (August 5, 2011) at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester.

Mrs. Stafford was born July 16, 1944 in Newfoundland, Canada, the daughter of the late Victor and Elizabeth Davies.

She was the wife of Donald Stafford whom she married in 1962 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

She was a parishioner of St. Christopher’s Church and enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, gardening, traveling, and reading. But her true passion was playing bingo.

Surviving along with her husband is her son, Edward (Tammy) Stafford of Bergen; a brother, James Davies of Ontario, Canada; two grandchildren, Amanda Stafford of Bergen, and Jonathan Stafford of Ft. Edward. Several brothers and sisters-in-law as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

She is the mother of the late Michael Stafford who passed away February 6, 2006.

There will be no prior visitation. Shirley’s Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, (August 13, 2011) at 10:00 AM in St. Christopher’s Church, 3350 Union Street, North Chili. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pluta Cancer Center, 125 Red Creek Drive, Rochester, NY 14623. Burial will be in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery, Churchville. Arrangements were entrusted to the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, Bergen.

Mrs. Jean Glass Babcock

Batavia - Jean Glass Babcock, 94, of Batavia, died Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Harris Hill Nursing Facility, Williamsville.

Mrs. Babcock was born August 26, 1917 in Bradford, Pa., daughter of the late Charles and Lillian Greenlund Glass.

A resident of Batavia since 1946, Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Batavia, previous member of the Batavia Presbyterian Church, and the East Bethany Presbyterian Church, and AGLOW.

Predeceased by her husband, Raymond T. “Torchy” Babcock in 2001, her son, Gary Babcock in 1996, and her sister, Rosamond Glass in 2006, Jean is survived by her daughter, Nancy Babcock of Healdsburg, CA.

Jean was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker extraordinaire, making her family her priority at all times and all costs. She loved cooking, gardening, reading, and bridge playing when she wasn’t ringside at one of Nancy’s horse shows, Gary’s concerts, or Torchy’s political functions. Jean and Torchy were often on the move in later years, traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as to Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, Australia, New Zealand, and France.

Jean was blessed at the end of her life to be surrounded by a remarkable team of loving care givers at Harris Hill Nursing Facility, all of whom she saw as family. Close family friend and private care giver Trudie Dawson of Batavia was a constant presence, comfort, and unlimited source of great love.

There are no calling hours and no public services. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery, Batavia. Memorials may be made to the Genesee County Animal Shelter via Volunteers for Animals, PO Box 1621, Batavia 14021 (www.vol4animals.org).
