Gabriel Awad
Glenville -- Gabriel Awad, 97, of Saratoga Rd., died Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at Ellis Hospital, with his daughter and caregiver by his side.
Mr. Awad was born in Brooklyn on April 3, 1905, to Gabriel and Zakiah Shugra Awad. He was married in Brooklyn on December 5, 1931, to Gladys Iverson. For many years Gabe owned and operated, with his brother, Awad's Imported Linens, with two stores in Manhattan. Following the sale of his business in the 1970's he was employed in the financial district of New York City with the brokerage firms of Merrill Lynch and Co., and later with Wagner, Stott and Co. Following his retirement in 1988, the Awads moved to Glenville. Gabriel was an active member of the Annie Schaffer Senior's Discussion Group as well as a mentor to students enrolled in St. John the Evangelist School in Schenectady. For many years Mr. Awad was a favorite and frequent contributor to The Daily Gazette's “Letters to the Editor” section. Known personally, Gabe hand delivered his letter or, in later years, made sure they were hand delivered.

His beloved wife, Gladys Iverson Awad, whom he married on December 5, 1931, died in 1993.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth A. Williams of Glenville; and a grandson, Drew E. Williams of Amherst, MA.

Mr. Awad was also predeceased by his siblings, Reginald, Henry and William Awad, and Alice Saydah.

A gathering of friends will be held Sunday, February 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd., East Glenville.

Contributions may be made in his late wife, Gladys Awad's memory to Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Inc. or to the Thomas Corners Vol. Fire Dept., 1 Airport Rd., Scotia, NY 12302.

Private burial will be held Monday in Green–Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, under the direction of the Glenville Funeral Home.

Josephine A. Basileo
Gloversville -- Josephine A. Basileo, 76, died January 31, 2003. Calling hours, 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at John W. Finocan Funeral Home, Inc., 13 Prospect Ave., Gloversville. A Prayer service will be on Monday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass at 10 a.m., both at the St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, 149 S. Main St., Gloversville. Spring interment, Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorials to the Church Building Fund.

Joan E. Bilili–Luft
Schenectady -- Joan E. Bilili– Luft, 67, at rest January 30, 2003, at Ellis Hospital.
Born in Highland, NY, she was one of several children of the late Myron and Lena Lent, and moved to the Schenectady area in her youth. A homemaker, Joan enjoyed music, performing locally with her longtime companion, Louis Luft. She was of the Protestant faith.

She was predeceased recently by her longtime companion, Louis Luft.

She was the mother of Lynn (Joseph) Evans of Schenectady, Ruth (Joseph) Asadorian of Mechanicville, Frank and Leo Bilili, both of Schenectady, and Debbie Craig of California; grandmother of Sarah, Joey, Nicholas, Chad and David.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday 11 a.m. at the DeMarco–Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Avenue, Rotterdam, with the Rev. Charles Gay officiating. A calling hour will precede the service from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Interment will be at Parkview Cemetery, Schenectady.

Helen G. Broc
Rotterdam -- Helen G. Broc, 87, of Puritan Drive, died Thursday, January 30, 2003, at the Kingsway Arms Nursing Home, Schenectady.
She was born in Greenville,  Pennsylvania. Helen graduated with a degree in art from SUNY Albany and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. For several years, she was employed as a free lance artist in Boston and Pittsburgh. During World War II, she moved to the Schenectady area and continued her career as a free lance artist. Helen was an avid crafter of ceramics, jewelry and prints. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Friends of the Library, Designers Craft Council of the Schenectady County Museum and the Schoharie County Arts Council in Cobleskill.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, Sylvester Gruber and Ida Reigelman; her husband, Jon Broc, whom she married July 13, 1946; three brothers, Leon Gruber, Lester Gruber and Sherman Gruber; and three sisters, Mary Gruber, Lois Bush and Florence Downing.

Survivors include her son, Loren Broc of Rotterdam; two sisters–in–law, Ethel Robinson of Mercer, PA and Sonia Magilnicki of Schenectady; three nieces, Jane Deubler of Wickenburg, AZ, Roberta Lackey of Stoneboro, PA, and Marjorie Stubert of Fredonia, PA; five nephews, Gilbert Downing of Pittsburgh, PA, Harold Gruber and Stanley Gruber, both of Greenville, PA, James Bush of Mercer, PA, and Robert Magil of Altamont.

Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Schenectady Memorial Park Mausoleum, 566 Giffords Church Road, Rotterdam. Relatives and friends are invited. There will be no calling hours by request.

Contributions can be made in her memory to the Eastern Chapter Nature Conservancy, 200 Broadway, Troy, NY 12180, or the Capital Audubon Society, P.O. Box 487, Latham, NY 12110.

Arrangements are by the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady.

Henry A. Fioretti Sr.
Gloversville -- Henry A. Fioretti, Sr., 82, of State Highway 29A, died at home January 30, 2003, following a long illness. There will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held in the spring at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Assoc., 440 New Karner Rd., Albany 12205. Arrangements areby Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville.

Robert L. Franklin
Schenectady -- Robert L. Franklin, 51, of Chrisler Avenue, died suddenly Thursday, January 30, 2003, at St. Clare's Hospital.
Robert was born January 19, 1952 in Oceanside, California. He had lived in the Schenectady area for the past fifteen years, moving here from Huntsville, TX. He was a tractor trailer driver for Sysco Foods in Albany and was a member of New Hope Gospel Church.

Mr. Franklin is survived by his wife, Garnett Finley Franklin, whom he married December 4, 1991; one son, Try Franklin of Huntsville, TX; three daughters, Yvette Nelson, Griselda Crawford and Anika Fubert, all of Schenectady; his mother, Christine Mock Franklin of Huntsville, TX; a brother, Daryll, and his wife, Euronda Franklin of Oceanside, CA; a sister, Elsie Ross of Huntsville, TX; eight grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Hurel Franklin.

Funeral services will be held in Huntsville, TX, at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Huntsville, TX.

Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Light's Funeral Home, 1428 State Street, Schenectady, NY.

Joseph P. Gardner
Glenville -- Joseph P. Gardner died Sunday, January 26, 2003, at the Glendale Nursing Home.
Mr. Gardner was born on June 29, 1932. He lived in the Catskill area until moving to Schenectady about 15 years ago. For much of his life he worked as a freelance artist in New York City. Mr. Gardner's paintings were shown in various galleries in the New York City area and throughout the Capital Region. Several of his more recent works are on display at Bethesda House in Schenectady.

Mr. Gardner is survived by his two sisters, Ann Dumont of Schenectady and Dorothy Markle of Catskill. He is also survived by his family and friends at Bethesda House, who will host a memorial service and celebration of his life at Bethesda House on Thursday, February 6, 2003, at 1:15 p.m.

Mr. Gardner has been laid to rest in his family's burial plot in Catskill, beside his beloved mother, Anna.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Bethesda House, 418 Liberty St., Schenectady 12305.

Arthur A. Hebler
Rensselaer -- Arthur A. Hebler, 87, of Rosewood Gardens, Troy Rd., died Thursday at St. Peter's Hospital. Funeral service Sunday 3 p.m. at West Stephentown Baptist Church, Rte 43 and Fire Tower Rd., West Stephentown. Calling hours one–half hour prior to the service at the church. Interment Monday at 10 a.m. at Pittsfield Cemetery. Arrangements by Morris–Stebbins–Miner & Sanvidge Funeral Home.

John M. Hogan Sr.
Saratoga Springs -- John M. Hogan, Sr., 91, died Jan. 30, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Laura; a daughter; a son; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave. Private burial at St. Peter's Cemetery. Memorials to Rubin Dialysis Center, 59 Myrtle Street, Saratoga Springs, 12866. Arrangements, Wm. J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home.

Georgia Ann Lashoff
Colonie -- Georgia Ann (Muffy) Lashoff, 58, died Thursday, January 30, 2003, with her beloved husband and family at her side, at St. Peter's Hospital, after a courageous battle.
She was born in Albany, the daughter of the late Gunnard and Julia DeLong. In July of 1992, Georgia founded the Transplant Support Group of Upstate New York, at St. Clare's Hospital. Georgia's main goal was to offer support and to help educate the public about the importance of organ donation. With the support group, her greatest gift was being able to help others.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, George Lashoff, Jr.; her son, George Lashoff, III and his wife, Heather of Colonie; her daughter, Michelle Thompson and her grandson, Milton, both of Albany; She was the sister of Frank DeLong and his wife, Marsha of Colonie, and the late Martha Pezzula. She was the daughter-in-law of George Lashoff, Sr. of Colonie, and the late Rosemary Lashoff; sister-in-law of Armand Pezzula and Earl (Uncle) Austin. She was the beloved aunt of Virginia Doyle, Alice Brown, Nancy Roselan and her husband, Harry, and Darren DeLong and his wife, Kristen; and the great–aunt of Barbara and Katherine Brown, Paige DeLong and Jack DeLong.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 8 a.m. at New Comer–Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie (Rt. 155–south of Central Ave), thence to Historic St. Mary's Church, Capital Hill at 9 a.m., where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made, in memory of Georgia Lashoff, to the Center for Donation & Transplant, 218 Great Oaks Blvd. Albany, NY 12203.

Donald A. LaVenture
Schenectady -- Donald A. LaVenture, 74, formerly of Waverly Place, died Thursday, January 30, 2003, at the home of his daughter, surrounded by his children, after a short illness.
Born in Schenectady, Mr. LaVenture was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Korea. He had been a lieutenant with the Schenectady County Sheriff's Department, retiring in 1995 after 25 years of service. He had been recognized by the County Sheriffs for his dedication to the department and his years of service to the county. Mr. LaVenture was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion Post 1005 and a communicant of St. Helen's Church.

He is survived by six children, Annette and her husband, Tim Adamczak, of Guilderland, Michelle and her husband, David Durling, of Niskayuna, Lisa LaVentrue, David LaVenture, Robert LaVenture, and Christopher LaVenture, all of Schenectady; five grandchildren, Tyler and Ryan Adamczak, Andrew and Ashley Durling, and Brandon LaVenture. He is also survived by two cousins, Thomas Hayner and Mary Alice LaVenture.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 8:15 from the Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St., Schenectady, and at 9 o'clock at St. Helen's Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours are Sunday evening 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna with military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 1005, 1612 Chrisler Ave., Schenectady, NY 12303 , or Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308.

Edgar F. Mayo
Clifton Park -- Edgar F. Mayo, 86, formerly of Springbrook Park, died Thursday, January 30, 2003, at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga, after a long illness.
He was born on October 30, 1916 in Boston, Massachusetts, and was the son of the late Eli H. and Esther Duffy Mayo. Mr. Mayo had been a stock clerk for the Albany Medical Center Hospital for 16 years and had also worked for the General Electric Co. for 19 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Crescent, a former member of the W.K. Mansfield Fire Co., and was a social member of the American Legion Mohawk Post #1450 in Halfmoon.

He was the brother of the late Dorothy Bloodgood and Joseph A. Mayo.

Mr. Mayo is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday morning at 9:30 from the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Rt. 9 in Clifton Park, thence to St. Mary's Church in Crescent, where at 10 a.m. the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Waterford.

Clarissa Potter
Round Lake -- Clarissa Potter, 91, formerly of Curry Avenue in Round Lake, died on Thursday, January 30, 2003, at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs.
She was born on September 3, 1911, in Round Lake and had been a lifelong resident. She was the daughter of the late Arthur G. and Henrietta Lockrow Wilmot. She had retired as the village clerk of Round Lake after having served for nine years, was a member of the Round Lake Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and had also been a lifelong member of the Round Lake United Methodist Church.

She was the beloved wife of Kenneth L. Potter, who died in 1991.

She was the devoted mother of George Arthur Potter of Cumming, GA and Mrs. Virginia Hewitt of Round Lake. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held privately from the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9 in Clifton Park, with the Rev. Jeffrey Stratton, Pastor of the Round Lake United Methodist Church officiating.

Spring interment will take place at the Dunning Street Cemetery.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Round Lake United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 485, Round Lake, NY 12151.

Margie B. Stewart
Mayfield -- Margie Becker Stewart, 96, of Mayfield, died January 29, 2003, at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, February 5 at 7 p.m. at Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church, 22 N. Main St. Mayfield. Cremation will take place at Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady. Arrangements by Walrath Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., Gloversville.

Mary Helen Veley
Cobleskill -- Mrs. Mary Helen Veley, 87, of North Grand Street, formerly of Richmondville, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.
Mrs. Veley was born March 16, 1915, in the town of Gilboa and was the daughter of Arthur B. and Mary Grace (Hamm) Decker. She attended a one room school house in Gilboa and later graduated from the former Cobleskill Central School. During her married life, she assisted in the daily operations of the family dairy farm in Richmondville. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Richmondville.

Mrs. Veley was predeceased by her husband, Morris Veley; and two brothers, George and Lester Decker.

Survivors include two sons, James Veley of Richmondville and Alan A. Veley of Cobleskill; a brother, Frank Decker of Cobleskill; six grandchildren, Steven, Mark, Jeff, Jamie, April and Shawna Rae Veley, and six great–grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson in the spring. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Main St., Richmondville, NY 12149.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mereness–Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill and Palmer & Shaylor, Inc., 134 River St., Middleburgh.

Mary Ann Wiley
Scotia -- Mary Ann Wiley, 72, of Goldfoot Road, died Friday, January 31, 2003, at Ellis Hospital after a short illness.
Born September 1, 1930 in Greece, NY, she was the daughter of the late Reginald and Mattie Havill. She moved to Schenectady in June 1951 and then moved to Scotia in 1966. Mrs. Wiley graduated from the University of Rochester, receiving her B.S. in chemistry, and was employed right out of college by the G.E. Co. at the Schenectady plant as a computer programmer and then as an analyst in power systems. She retired from General Electric in 1970. She was an avid outdoors person and a longtime member of the Adirondack Mountain Club.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Wiley of Scotia, whom she married on November 23, 1963 in Greece, NY; a daughter, Kathleen A. Wiley of Silver Creek, NY; one sister, Martha Russell of Ames, IA; two brothers, William Havill of Ft. Myers, FL and Reginald Havill of Port Charlotte, FL.

There are no calling hours. Cremation was handled locally.

A spring memorial service will be held at Willsboro Cemetery, Keene, NY.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mary Ann Wiley to the Carl Fund for Stroke Prevention and Treatment, c/o Ellis Hospital Foundation, P. O. Box 1015, Schenectady, NY 12301–1015.
