Sarah Ann (McLean) Bird
LITTLE FALLS — Mrs. Sarah Ann (McLean) Bird, a longtime valley resident, passed away on Thursday morning, July 17, 2003, in Little Falls Hospital. At the time of her passing, Sarah was comforted with her loving family at her bedside.
Mrs. Bird was born on November 6, 1916, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late James H. and Mary Elizabeth (Wakeman) McLean and received her education in Little Falls, Herkimer and Camden schools. She was joined in marriage in New Jersey with Walter D. Bird on June 1, 1938, in Ilion. Mr. Bird predeceased her on December 2, 2000. She enjoyed gardening, singing, dancing and conversation as well as being an activist. Sarah was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in East Herkimer.
She leaves two sons, James Bird and wife Patricia of Pahrump, Nev., and Roger Bird and wife Kathy of Minoa; three daughters, Joyce Thurston and husband David of Deerfield, Sallie Thomas and husband William of Las Vegas, Nev., and Marilyn Spriggs and husband David of Syracuse; twelve cherished grandchildren and twelve adored great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor MacGregor; and a brother, James W. McLean.
Sarah's funeral will commence at noon from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, East Herkimer, on Saturday, July 19. The family will receive relatives and friends from 11 a.m.-noon, prior to the service. Procession will follow to Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer, where Sarah will be laid to rest. Contributions may be made to Hospice Care, Inc.; envelopes are available at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home.

Myron W. Smith Jr.
ST. JOHNSVILLE — Myron W. Smith Jr., 68, of County Highway 114, St. Johnsville, passed away on July 16, 2003, at Little Falls Hospital.
He was born October 7, 1934, in St. Johnsville, son of the late Myron W. Smith Sr. and Carrie M. (Lyons) Smith. Myron was a graduate of Oppenheim Central School and lived all his life in the Oppenheim area.
Mr. Smith was a Korean War veteran, enlisting in 1957, and was honorably discharged in 1959.
He was last employed at the former Little Falls Felt Shoe Co. in St. Johnsville and at one time he worked for the former Palatine Dye Co.
Myron was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include a brother, Milton Smith and wife Arlene of St. Johnsville; two sisters, Gladys Congdon and husband Ross of Oppenheim and Violet Pearl and husband Raymond of Lassellsville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his parents and a brother, Martin Smith.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 18, 2003, at 2 p.m. from Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville. Interment will follow at Ephratah Rural Cemetery. Calling hours were Thursday, July 17, 2003, from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

John Bernier
HERKIMER — Mr. John Bernier, 86, of Herkimer, beloved husband of Jeanne Bernier, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, July 17, 2003, in Folts Homes, Herkimer.
John was born on October 19, 1916, in the Province of Quebec, a son of the late Thomas and Caroline (Bargone) Bernier. He was educated in Montreal schools. On April 23, 1938, John was united in marriage with the former Jeanne Paul in Montreal. They shared a blessed and loving union of 65 years together.
John served in the Canadian military. His last employment was with Laurentien Kitchen's in Montreal, Canada. He was a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer.
Blessed with the ability to work with his hands, John was a master craftsman and he enjoyed taking on new projects. He will be forever remembered as a well-dressed and well-mannered man.
He leaves his wife, Jeanne of Herkimer; two sons, Claude Bernier and wife Angelique of Herkimer and Gilles Bernier of Florida; a daughter, Helene Logan and husband Edward of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren, Tammy, Jim, Jennifer, Tom, Donna, Jeffrey and Christine; and two step-grandchildren, Brittany and Benjamin. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, John Bernier Jr.; and his brothers and sisters in Canada.
Visitation at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N.  Washington St., Herkimer, will be held on Sunday, July 20, from 5-8 p.m. John's funeral will commence at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 21, from the chapel of the funeral home where prayer will be offered, thence to St. Francis de Sales Church, Bellinger Street, Herkimer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Mark Cunningham, pastor.
Procession will follow to St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer, where John will be laid to rest. Kindly onsider contributions to the St. Francis de Sales Building Fund; envelopes are available at the funeral home.
The Bernier family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the rehabilitation department at Valley Health Services for their professionalism. Also a very special thank you to John's friends and neighbors for all of your acts of kindness that you have shown the family throughout difficult times.

Anthony J. Maneen
ILION — Mr. Anthony J. Maneen, 57, of 174 W. State St., passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in University Hospital after a long and courageous battle with diabetes, kidney and heart disease. He was born in Ilion on June 22, 1946, the son of the late Samuel C. and Jennie Terzo Maneen. Anthony attended Ilion schools and graduated from Ilion High School with the class of 1964. He later attended and graduated from Albany School of Pharmacy with the class of 1974. He was married to Jean Keddell on July 30, 1966, in Church of the Annunciation, Ilion. Anthony served as supervising pharmacist for the opening of Carl's Drugs, Herkimer, in 1976. He later was owner and operator of Mann's Village Pharmacy, Richfield Springs, and later of Maneen's Pharmacy, Newport, for many years. Following his retirement, he worked part time as a pharmaceutical consultant for local pharmacies in both the Herkimer and Oneida County areas. He had most recently worked with the Oneida County Correctional facility in the pharmacy. He served with the Herkimer County Legislature since June of 1995 and was presiding chairman since January of 2002. Anthony is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Jean Maneen; three sons, Samuel C. Maneen of Woodbridge, Va., Francis A. Maneen of Rochester and Staff Sgt. Joseph J. Maneen, serving with the U.S. Air Force in Ramstein, Germany; one brother and sister-in-law, Nicholas and Linda Maneen of Greenville, S.C.; one sister and brother-in-law, Mayme and Gerald Fluharty of Frankfort; his cherished granddaughter, Briana Maneen; his mother-in-law, Ruth Keddell of Ilion; in- laws, Lorita Keddell, James and Pat Keddell, Sister Margaret Keddell, Barbara Griffin, Paul and June Keddell, Peter and Deb Keddell, Mary Patelos and Kenneth and Francine Keddell; his god-children, Daniel Fluharty, Erick Judson, Andrea Keddell-Heintz, Lindsay Lockett and Joseph DeStafano; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father-in-law, Francis Keddell; and a brother-in-law, Dan Keddell. His funeral will be held Saturday, July 19, at 10:15 a.m. from the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave., Frankfort, and at 11 a.m. in Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. John Yanas, pastor. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 3-8 p.m. at the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc. Members of the Knights of Columbus will meet Friday evening at 7 at the funeral home for services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Kidney, Diabetes or Heart associations. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Grace (Denike) Nelson
LITTLE FALLS — Grace (Denike) Nelson, age 93, of 550 E. John St., Little Falls, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday afternoon, July 16, 2003, in Little Falls Hospital.
Grace was born in the Bronx on August 23, 1909, daughter of Marie (Inkenburg) and Willett Denike. She was married to John H. Nelson on September 11, 1929, by Father Rosa, in the Church of Our Lady Of Mount Carmel,  White Plains. Her husband passed away in October of 1949.
Grace loved to read, and to knit and crochet for family and friends. She was a longtime member of the ladies auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, now known as the United Transportation Union, Railroad Division. She was also a member of the Slovenian Home Inc. of Little Falls.
Grace is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline N. Williams and husband Ronald of Johnnycake Road, Mohawk; son, Francis Robert Nelson of Little Falls; her grandchildren, Scott M. Williams and wife Vickie of Iuka, Miss., Shawn R. Williams and wife Barbara of Babylon, Stacie L. Williams of Little Falls, Shayne J. Williams and wife Celia of Merritt Island, Fla., Christina K. Nelson of Cortland, and Rebecca L. Lawton and husband Kevin of Moravia; and eight great-grandchildren. Grace is also survived by a very special nephew, Robert D. Adams and his wife, Marylin, of Acworth, Ga.
In keeping with Grace's wishes there will be no calling hours. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial donations in Grace's memory to a charity of your choice. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are under the careful direction of Enea Funeral Home, Little Falls.
