Allen Goland
Died: Thursday, January 14, 2010
Age: 79

Allen N. Goland of Port Jefferson Village, former 30-year resident of Bellport, devoted husband, father and grandfather passed away on Jan. 14 at the age of 79. He was born icon in Chicago, Ill., on April 26, 1930. He was president and valedictorian of his graduating class at Von Steuben Senior High School and graduated in 1951 from Roosevelt University, Chicago, Ill., with a B.S. (with honors) in physics/mathematics and in 1956 from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., where he was a university fellow, with a Ph.D. in physics.

Allen began his 45-year career in physics in 1956 as a postdoc at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Beginning in 1958 he worked for the Army Materials Research Agency in Watertown, Mass. He was able to carry out much of his research during this time at BNL, and he subsequently received a position in the Physics Department where he continued his research in condensed matter physics, including particle-solid interactions, X-ray and neutron scattering ultimately leading a group in the department for about nine years. During this period, BNL was one of the world's most active centers for fundamental radiation defect studies and Allen gained an international reputation built largely on his innovative approach to the study of defects in solids. In 1982 Allen moved to the Department of Applied Sciences where he held several senior positions including deputy chairman and associate chairman of the Department of Applied Sciences. In 1996 Allen retired from BNL, continuing as a guest scientist and consultant.

In 1971 Allen was appointed as an adjunct professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, at SUNY Stony Brook where he taught graduate classes, advised doctoral students and was active in promoting the research carried out in the facility, especially in the area of small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering, where he was an active co-participant in the SBU-NIST work. In addition to many years working in support of the Center for Thermal Spray Research, in 2009 he was very excited to begin serving as a member of the External Advisory Board for the Chemical and Molecular Engineering Program at SBU.

Over the years, Allen was involved in many other technical endeavors, some directly related to his core research interests and others farther afield. In 1971 he served as director of the NATO Advanced Study Institute in Istanbul, Turkey, and separately as a visiting professor at the School of Engineering, University of São Paulo, São Carlos, Brazil. He was a member of the Research Proposal Review Committee for the New York State Science & Technology Foundation (1982-95); the Executive Committee, National Steering Committee for the Advanced Neutron Source (1986-96); the U.S. Department of Energy, Natural Gas and Oil Technology Partnership (1994-2000); and a project adviser, Basic Research Group, Gas Research Institute (1986-98). For many years, 1982 until 2008, he was an associate editor of The Physical Review B: Condensed Matter.

During his career Allen co-authored over 100 technical papers published in journals such as Acta Materialia, Journal of the American Chemical Society and Journal of Materials Science and Engineering. He was recognized by a number of technical societies for his achievements in physics, he was a member of Sigma Xi and a fellow of the American Physical Society. He served as chair for the New York State Section, American Physical Society (1991-93), the American Physical Society Committee on Careers and Professional Development (1998-99), the American Institute of Physics Career Network Advisory Committee (2004-05) and AIP's Subcommittee on Classification and Information Retrieval (2005-08), Publication Policy Committee.

Allen actively supported the public library system as a volunteer, where "he was appreciated by public library directors throughout Suffolk County as a wise and thoughtful leader." For the South Country Library, he served as a trustee, board president and co-chair of the Building Committee. He later served as a trustee and board president of the Suffolk County Library System.

Over the years he actively pursued his interests in gardening, studying history and, later in life, dance. Whether it was his study of Middle Eastern history or the fox-trot, with all of his endeavors, once he focused on them he patiently and persistently developed his knowledge of the subject until he became an expert. We'll never know just how close he came to grasping the driving forces behind today's chaotic Middle East, but we do know that he achieved a "cat-like grace" on the dance floor.

Allen will be remembered as a gentleman and a scholar by friends, family and colleagues. Whether it was his soft-spoken approach to science, always there to listen and advise or his dedicated work in support of the public libraries or as kind and compassionate friend, husband, father and grandfather he will be dearly missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association at www.americanheart.org.

A memorial celebration is planned for Saturday, May 1, from 2 to 4 pm at Snyder Auditorium, Brookhaven National Lab. For details contact David Goland at goland@us.ibm.com or 845-417-3600.
