Emery (Bill) Dorn

Died: Monday, September 24, 2012

Emery (Bill) D. Dorn, a longtime resident of St. James, passed away on Sept. 24. He was the cherished husband of Joan; beloved uncle of Debra Crevoiserat and Allison Crevoiserat; devoted brother of Lee (Mary) Dorn, Edna Zolman and the late Randy Dorn; dear brother-in-law of Vincent Crevoiserat and Jean Isaksson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A service was held Sept. 28 at the funeral home. Burial followed at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Maher family of the St. James Funeral Home in St. James.

Everett Snelling

Died: Monday, September 24, 2012

Everett Hale Snelling passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 24 at the age of 81. Everett, a longtime resident of St. James, and volunteer fireman, was recently recognized for his 50 years of service. Everett taught science at Albany Avenue Elementary School in Farmingdale for over 35 years. He was an avid boater since his childhood days.

He is survived by his wife, Grace and their dog, Angel; his four children, Roger, Paul, Jean and Jeff; and his nine grandchildren.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Maher family of the St. James Funeral Home in St. James.

John Francis Colen

Died: Sunday, September 23, 2012

John Francis Colen, age 63, a lifelong resident of Port Jefferson, died on Sept. 23. He was born icon Nov. 20, 1948, in Port Jefferson.

John was the beloved son of the late Louis and Elizabeth Colen; loving brother of Wilma Shaw, Peter Colen and Walter Colen; dear uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Sept. 26. A funeral Mass was held the following morning at Infant Jesus R.C. Church in Port Jefferson, with a graveside committal that followed in St. James Churchyard Cemetery in East Setauket.

Marie M. Mills

Died: Sunday, September 23, 2012

Marie M. Mills of East Setauket died peacefully on Sept. 23 in her 92nd year. The daughter of Elizabeth Flynn and Patrick Edmund Magner, she was born icon July 2, 1920, in Hartford, Conn. Mrs. Mills graduated from the Hartford Public High School and the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing. She married icon Dr. R. Sherman Mills on Dec. 26, 1942, at Camp Pickett, Blacksburg, Va., and returned to work as a nurse in Hartford while her husband served overseas in the U.S. Army. Upon his return, Dr. and Mrs. Mills settled in Port Jefferson where he opened a medical practice. They moved to their home, Harbor View Farm in East Setauket, in 1948 where they raised their five children.

Mrs. Mills was involved in her community in various activities: faithful parishioner of St. James Roman Catholic Church and charter member of its Rosary Altar Society; and the John T. Mather Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. In addition to those two organizations, her volunteer hours were numerous with the St. Charles Hospital, Setauket School PTA, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the Red Cross, Port Jefferson Historical Society, Three Village Historical Society and Three Village Meals on Wheels.

Her life was shaped by the values inherent in her generation, of which she was so proud to be a part: family, faith, patriotism, volunteerism and kindness.

Mrs. Mills is survived by her sons, Stephen (Christine) of Oyster Bay, David (Mary Lu) of Setauket and Dr. Carl (Barbara) of East Setauket; her daughters Barbara (Michael) Russell of East Setauket and Ellen (Nancy) of Watertown, Mass.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and one great–grandchild.

A funeral Mass was held Thursday, Sept. 27, at St. James R.C. Church, Setauket celebrated by the Rev. Joseph V. McCabe, followed by burial in the churchyard cemetery. Memorial donations can be sent to the John T. Mather Hospital Auxiliary or Three Village Meals on Wheels. Arrangements entrusted to Bryant Funeral Home, Setauket.

John P. DeBernardi

Died: Saturday, September 22, 2012

John P. DeBernardi, 89, of Rocky Point, died Saturday, Sept. 22. Born in NYC, he was the son of the late Pasquale and the late Maria (Anguille) DeBernardi.

He served during World War II in the United States Army from Dec. 23, 1942 to Sept. 11, 1945. He was a self-employed artist in New York.

Mr. DeBernardi is survived by two sons, Patrick DeBernardi of Rocky Point and Dominick DeBernardi of California; sister, Theresa Stone of New Mexico; brother, Patrick DeBernardi of Bayside; two grandsons, Nicholas DeBernardi and Christopher DeBernardi; and two granddaughters, Danielle DeBernardi and Dominique DeBernardi. He was predeceased by his wife, Viola Fiorentino.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 26, at 9:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, Rocky Point. Interment followed in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Rocky Point Funeral Home of Rocky Point.

Natale T. Amato

Died: Friday, September 21, 2012

Natale T. Amato, age 91 of South Pasadena, Fla., formerly of Smithtown, passed peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones on Sept. 21.

They Shall Not Be Forgotten. He was a proud veteran of service as a sergeant in the United States Army during World War II, a former Town of Smithtown tax assessor, former president of the Tax Assessors Association for the State of New York and former president of the Northeast Regional Assessors Association.

He was the cherished husband of 64 years of the late Antoinette Amato, nee Macedonio; loving father of Maria Amato, Josephine (John) Figari, Natalie (the late Salvatore) Sudano, Louise Puleio, the late Charles Amato, Louis (Lisa) Amato and Graceann Dotolo; beloved Grandpa of 24; adored Great-Grandpa of 25 and Great-Great-Grandpa of one.

Natale is also survived by many other family members and friends.

A religious service was celebrated at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church. Interment followed at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Suncoast Hospice Foundation, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760.

Veronica Conrad

Died: Friday, September 21, 2012

Veronica J. Conrad, age 84 of St. James, died on Sept. 21.

She was the beloved wife of the late George; cherished mother of William (Josephine) Conrad, Peter (Deborah) Conrad, Christopher Conrad and James Conrad; loving grandmother of Michael, Michelle, Stephen and Alichia; dear great-grandmother of Emily, Isabella and Gabriel.

A religious service was celebrated at the funeral home. Interment followed at Holy Rood Cemetery.

Walter Sledge

Died: Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Walter J. Sledge of Kings Park died on Sept. 18. He was born icon in Brooklyn on Dec. 1, 1934, the son of John Lindsey and Anna Mori Cox Sledge. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, serving as private first class from 1952-55. He was later a foreman for LILCO in Brentwood.

Mr. Sledge is survived by his wife, Maureen Sledge of Kings Park; his sons, John (Choi) Sledge, Thomas (Pauline) Sledge, James Sledge and Joseph (Susan) Sledge; his daughter, Maureen (Douglas) Edwards; his brothers, William Sledge and Joseph Sledge; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Sept. 21 at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church in East Northport, followed by interment at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Bernard Gerard

Died: Sunday, September 16, 2012

Bernard W. Gerard, 83, of Cedar River Road, Indian Lake, died Sunday morning, Sept. 16, at Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Creek.

Born on June 13, 1929, in Bay Shore, he was the son of Robert and Martha (Deckman) Gerard. He was a graduate of Setauket High School. He served in the NY National Guard for six years in the early 1950s.

He married icon Marianne Hilliard on April 3, 1951, in Port Jefferson.

Bernard worked as a mason alongside his father for many years on Long Island. Upon his father’s death, he continued to run the family mason contractor business until his retirement.

Bernard traveled to Indian Lake for many years, enjoying the hunting and fishing. Following their marriage, they continued to vacation in Indian Lake making it their home in July of 1998. Bernard also enjoyed boating and had participated in the Albany to NY Hudson River Race.

He was a member of the Kempshall Mountain Club and the Cedar Valley Club.

Bernard was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Robert Gerard.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marianne Gerard; five sons, Bernard Gerard, Jr. and his wife Grace of Central Valley, Edward Gerard and his wife Cheri of Arnold, Md., Richard Gerard and his wife Lori of Tamworth, N.H., Daniel Gerard of Berwick, Maine, Chris Gerard and his wife Maria of Setauket; and eight grandchildren, Mary, Richard, Kevin, Makayla, Miranda, Aimie, Melissa and Samuel.

In accordance with Bernard’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Contributions to his memory may be directed to the Indian Lake Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 39, Indian Lake, NY 12842 or to the Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 773, Indian Lake, NY 12842.

James Clinton

Died: Friday, May 31, 2013

James H. Clinton, 81, of Wading River, died on May 31.

He was the loving father of James, Richard, Kathleen and Karen.

Gerald Brown

Died: Friday, May 31, 2013

Dr. Gerald Edward “Gerry” Brown of Setauket, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, died on May 31. He was a theoretical physicist who worked on nuclear physics and astrophysics. Since 1968 he had been at Stony Brook University where he was a distinguished professor of the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics.

Brown was born icon July 22, 1926, in Brookings, S.D. He received his bachelor’s degree in physics in 1946 from the University of Wisconsin, having enlisted in the Navy at age 16. In 1948, he earned his master’s degree from Yale University, and in 1950 he earned his Ph.D. In 1957, he earned his D.Sc. from the University of Birmingham in England, where he was from 1955 docent and in 1959-60 professor for theoretical physics. From 1960-85 he was a professor at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen and concurrently from 1964-68, a professor at Princeton University. In 1968 he accepted an appointment as a professor at Stony Brook where he supervised more than 70 doctoral candidates.

Brown worked first in theoretical atomic physics. In nuclear physics he was for decades one of the leading theorists of nuclear many-body problems. Starting in the 1970s, he worked frequently in collaboration with Nobel Laureate Hans Bethe on problems in astrophysics. Toward the end of Bethe’s life, Bethe told Brown to explain his work to the rest of the world.

Brown had many interests outside of physics. He liked to cook and garden, and enjoyed tennis and ballroom dancing with his wife, Betty.

Brown is survived by his wife; children, Hans, Nicky, Annegret and Titus; stepchildren, Claudia and Bernard; and seven grandchildren.

Died: Thursday, May 30, 2013

Agnes Tarling, of Mount Sinai, formerly of Nesconset, died on May 22. She was the cherished wife of David; loving mother of Lynn, David (Aleta), Susan (Thomas) Capasso and Lisa (Mark) Brady; beloved grandma of seven; and great-grandma of two. A funeral service was held May 25 at the funeral home. Interment followed at Memorial Cemetery of St. John’s Church.

Jose Mari

Died: Thursday, May 30, 2013

Jose Mari, 64, of Smithtown, passed away on May 30.

He was the beloved husband of Luthgarda; loving father of Joseph (Jessica) and Jay (Kelly); and cherished brother of Clara Mari, Delia Turco, Benvienido Mari and the late Angel Mari.

He is survived by many other family members and friends.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, Smithtown. Interment followed at Queen of All Saints Cemetery.
