He was 70 years old.

Fred’s career in Smithtown schools spanned 35 years, most of which was spent as a third grade teacher, but was complemented by roles in administration as a helping teacher, staff development facilitator, mentorship program coordinator and enrichment teacher. He taught at Sweetbriar, Mills Pond, Dogwood and St. James elementary schools. Fred was perhaps best known as the teacher who taught children how to tap trees and make maple syrup using maple trees found right in the schoolyard. Lew Baranello, former principal of St. James Elementary School, remembers “Fred took a special interest in the challenging kids. He eagerly accepted children into his class that others would shun. He nurtured, guided, and inspired so many kids.” Fred retired in 1998.

An avid outdoorsman, Fred devoted much of his time to hunting and fishing, and loved spending time on the water. He was a former commodore of Smithtown Bay Yacht Club, and actively served on its Board of Governors, where he generously counseled and advised club officers and members until his passing. Paul Ortolani, a friend and club member, remembers that Fred “was a trustworthy friend and a true gentleman to everyone. He made everyone around him feel welcome. When Fred was responsible for a project or a position, he led with a style so that those he led were not even aware they were being led, they just followed.”

Fred was widely considered a Renaissance man, interested and well-informed on many subjects, from Civil War history to lawn mower maintenance. In addition to a variety of intellectual and social pursuits, he greatly enjoyed working with his hands, and spent the greater part of his adult life clearing a plot of land and building a vacation house in a remote area of upstate New York. He viewed this endeavor as “a great adventure” and enjoyed recruiting friends and relatives to assist in key building milestones along the way.

Fred was an adoring and adored grandfather to one grandchild, Chelsea, and is survived by his wife, Mary Alice, his daughter, Kristen, and his son-in-law, Sven.
