Claire Weslyn Juber Skaperdas

Died: Monday, August 13, 2012

Born: June 8, 1927, in Flushing to Wesley Raymond Juber and Evelyn D. Keyser Juber.

married: June 8, 1952, to James Skaperdas, ceremony performed by her uncle and godfather The Reverend Albert T. Keyser.

Two children: Wesley Juber Skaperdas and his wife, Patricia Ramey Skaperdas, and Evelyn Skaperdas Chamberlin and her husband, Mark Steven Chamberlin.

Four grandchildren: Mark Steven Chamberlin Jr. and his wife, Jessica Sinclair Chamberlin, Kimberly Merckling, Constance Chamberlin Harrah and her husband, Jeremy Wayne Harrah, and Nicholas Ramey Skaperdas.

Three great-grandchildren: Nicholas Merckling III, Madison Grace Merckling and Jacob Adam Harrah.

She was a member of Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church in Palm Coast, Fla., and a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Setauket for many years. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the DOES (wives of Elks members) on Long Island.

She was also a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of John T. Mather Hospital, Port Jefferson, and worked for New York Telephone Company for several years before her children were born.

To us who knew her, she was (to my Dad), Clairesy, his bride, “Mother Claire Superior,” Happy Aunt Claire, Mom, Grandma and Gigi to the great-grandchildren. She loved and cared for everyone, family and friends alike. She shared whatever she had with everyone, her home in the Adirondacks was open to all who wanted to come visit and stay a while. She was quick with a smile, but at the same time, was not afraid to tell you exactly what she thought!

My brother, Wes, and I have been blessed to have had her as our mother, and we and our families have many fond memories of growing up on Long Island, spending summers swimming in Long Island Sound, going up to the Adirondacks for vacations and visiting them in their home in Florida. Mom and Dad knew how to have a good time and were an excellent hostess and host.

Even though she lived in an assisted living facility for nine years, they all knew her and loved her there, too. It is a testimony to her faith and love of our dear savior, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

She passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 13, at 4:53 am at the Port Orange Hospice Care Center, Port Orange, Fla., and is buried at the Volusia Memorial Park with Dad in Ormond Beach, Fla. Pastor William Douthwaite, of Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church, Palm Coast, presided over the graveside service. She will be missed!

The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another. Genesis 31:49

Arrangements were entrusted to O.B. Davis Funeral Homes of Port Jefferson Station.

The following is excerpted from Jane Cash’s entry on the O.B. Davis website:.

I wanted to tell you a few things about “Neil” and our life together, We met 55 years ago outside a pool hall throwing bagels at each other: We were introduced by some best friends of ours. We were an unlikely couple. He was blonde-haired, blue-eyed child of Roman parents who came over from Ireland. I am the child of American-born parents of Jewish, Catholic, Russian, Hungarian, Irish, Scottish — a Heinz 57. He was 17 and I was 15. A friendship started those 55 years ago which blossomed into a love relationship which lasted until a few days ago.

In 1968, Neil and I were on a backpacking trip in the Adirondacks. I was whining about my sore feet. In the process of making tea for me, Neil set himself on fire with the camp stove. He suffered second-degree burns to his arm and face and had to walk almost two hours out of the woods to an ambulance. His subsequent treatment at Mather Hospital by a therapist inspired him to go into that field. His treatment by EMTs started my career as a nurse and an EMT.

Neil was highly successful in his career in electrical engineering and became a senior vice president in circuit technology. Unfortunately, his expertise in management skills didn’t help when an English firm took over the company and wiped out the staff. Neil was the last to be laid off. The company fell apart after that.

At 50 years old, he took the SAT for the first time. When he sat down at the desk at Ward Melville High School to write the exam, the students thought he was the proctor. He got 650 on the Math and the same on the English. That was better then I got when I took the first SAT exam out of high school. He went to Suffolk Community College for the basics and then to Touro College for a bachelor’s degree and a master’s. After a year working at the Bronx VA with quadriplegic veterans, he went to work as a therapist at Southampton Hospital and eventually became the department head.

In the mid-1990s, he started hand and occupational therapy for the treatment of traumatic hand injuries. He spent the last years of his life doing what he loved the most, helping people regain the use of their hands after illness or surgery. He has a reputation as the “go-to guy” from Montauk to New York City. He felt really fulfilled in this role and enjoyed teaching kinesiology and hand therapy at Touro College, where he was a favorite teacher. Many of the hand therapists on Long Island are his students.

Of course, being a husband, father and grandfather were his most important roles. Just before he became acutely ill, he told me that he did not have a bucket list, that he had done everything in life that he wanted to do. He had seven months of chemo, surgery and hardly being able to eat or drink. He had excellent care but the cancer won out in the end.

One of his physicians called him a hero. He certainly was a hero. He chose to die on his own terms by pulling out his own endotracheal tube. A supreme act of courage! He did it this way to the very end.

I will miss him every day of my life but we had a great life together and many amazing children, grandchildren, relatives and friends, Thank you all for being here and sharing his parting with us.
