As a young boy, his family moved to Baldwin, and his father married his second wife Josephine, adding stepsiblings Rose and Phillip Sarubbi and James and Mary Desimone.

Also during his tenure at Levittown, his basketball teams consistently won awards for sportsmanship, inspiring both community spirit and legends, most recently chronicled in Long Island Monthly magazine’s 1990 article “The Dream Season.”

Larry was also a fixture at Pierce Country Day Camp in Mineola and a devoted father to his five children: Diana Motschenbacher (Harry) of Hauppauge, Janice of California, Wayne (Sue) of Manhasset, Paul (Patty) of Plainview, and Tricia Panasci (Frank) of Wading River.

When he retired, Larry and his wife Rosemary moved to Shoreham, but he hardly slowed down, serving as treasurer of the Retired School Administrators and Supervisors and a member of the Section VIII appeals and protests committee. Larry also continued his athletic pursuits, playing competitively in the Senior Softball league, with whom he won the World Series in 1990. Charles “Chuck” Bubnis was born in Setauket on June 18, 1924. As a young man, he met Marjorie Saccente at the roller skating rink in Patchogue. They married and had nine children, eight girls and one boy. He was predeceased by his wife Marge and four of his children. He had 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Throughout his life, Charles accomplished many achievements, including building his own home in 1952, a large garage and an in-ground stainless steel swimming pool. He was the only one of his siblings to obtain a high school equivalency diploma, which he received in 1969. In addition to his property in Setauket, he owned land upstate and a farm in Maine. He was an entrepreneur managing several businesses, including a business machine repair shop, a gas station, automobile repair garage, snow removal service and Bubnis Fuel Oil Company. He also worked as a night supervisor of building L at Kings Park State Hospital, a school bus and truck driver.

Charles was very proud to have served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an electrician’s first mate on the USS Pringle, a Fletcher Class destroyer, which was sunk by a kamikaze in the Pacific. He has enjoyed reminiscing with the other survivors for the past 30 years at Pringle reunions. He also participated in the Tin Can Sailors. Last year he was pleased to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

Chuck’s numerous interests included antique cars, pilot license, beekeeping, gardening, baking bread, cooking, camping and traveling (having visited 49 states). Within the community, he was active in many clubs and organizations. He was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was active in the Three Village Civic Association and the Historical Society. He also served as an usher at Saint James R.C. Church.

A major part of his life was his service in the fire department, spanning 66 years. He served in the engine hose company, fire police, as an ambulance driver and as a captain. He was famous for his baked clams and clam chowder. He will also be remembered for his ‘corny’ jokes.

He was a kind man who never had a bad word to say about anyone. He will be missed.

Dr. Joel Fredrick Holubar

Dr. Joel Fredrick Holubar was born in Brooklyn to Rose and Stanley. In early August at the age of 80, he lost his hard fight to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Joel was a “self-made man,” having worked his way through college and dental school and receiving a doctorate of dental surgery from New York University School of Dentistry. Joel was the first oral surgeon in Suffolk County, and his oral and maxillofacial and reconstructive surgery practice flourished for over 50 years in Smithtown. As an assistant clinical professor of surgery at Stony Brook University and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, he taught young surgeons and volunteered his expertise, providing free care to children with facial deformities.

Joel is survived and dearly missed by his wife Mariana, “the love of his life” and “first mate” of 48 years; their loving sons Bjorn and Stefan and his wife Susanne; and his beloved grandchildren, Graydon, Magnus, Charlotte, Sabina and Tobin. Joel is also survived by his sister, Connie; his nephews, Richard and Ross; and his Swedish in-laws, Inga Britt, niece Liselott and nephew Crister.

Joel was an accomplished competitive sailor who won many trophies. As captain of the Golden Peace, he won his class in the Around Long Island Regatta, Block Island Race Week and the Gitana Cup. Of note, Joel was the fleet surgeon of Stony Brook Yacht Club.

Joel will be remembered by his many friends on the Whiteface Mountain Volunteer Ski Patrol. There he received an award for over 40 years of service. He was also selected to be on the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Ski Patrol.

Joel (“Captain Doc”) was the ultimate rugged outdoorsman who loved all creatures. Joel will be remembered by friends he touched while deep sea fishing for giant bluefin tuna in Montauk, Gloucester, Mass., and Beaufort, N.C.; billfishing in Panama and the Caribbean; salmon fly-fishing in Alaska, Canada and Russia; or while hunting for big and small game in the Adirondack Mountains, Sag Harbor, Maryland and Canada.

Joel’s wife, Mariana, would like to express her sincere gratitude to the entire local medical community for their tireless care.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date for friends and family.

To us who knew her, she was (to my Dad), Clairesy, his bride, “Mother Claire Superior,” Happy Aunt Claire, Mom, Grandma and Gigi to the great-grandchildren. She loved and cared for everyone, family and friends alike. She shared whatever she had with everyone, her home in the Adirondacks was open to all who wanted to come visit and stay a while. She was quick with a smile, but at the same time, was not afraid to tell you exactly what she thought!

My brother, Wes, and I have been blessed to have had her as our mother, and we and our families have many fond memories of growing up on Long Island, spending summers swimming in Long Island Sound, going up to the Adirondacks for vacations and visiting them in their home in Florida. Mom and Dad knew how to have a good time and were an excellent hostess and host.

Even though she lived in an assisted living facility for nine years, they all knew her and loved her there, too. It is a testimony to her faith and love of our Dear Savior, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

She passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 13, at 4:53 am at the Port Orange Hospice Care Center, Port Orange, Fla., and is buried at the Volusia Memorial Park with Dad in Ormond Beach, Fla. Pastor William Douthwaite, of Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church, Palm Coast, presided over the graveside service. She will be missed!

The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent, one from another.
