Michael R. Shotts
Died: Monday, August 27, 2012
Michael R. Shotts of Smithtown died suddenly on Aug. 27, in his 46th year. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen; loving and proud father of Brett and Luke; dear brother of Paula Snyder (Pete); devoted son of Joan and cherished uncle.
He was a dedicated and passionate lacrosse coach and friend to many.
Arrangements were made by Moloney’s Hauppauge Funeral Home. Interment at Hauppauge Rural Cemetery.
Wanda L. Alber
Died: Sunday, August 26, 2012
Wanda L. Alber, 86, died in Andover, Mass., of congestive heart failure and Alzheimer’s disease on Aug. 26, with her loving family by her side. Wife of the late Carl Alber, she was born
in Brooklyn in 1926 to Dorothy and Frank Lisiecki and was raised in Port Washington. She and Carl moved to East Setauket where they raised their four children and spent their happiest years. They retired to Cape Cod in the late 1980s, but in their hearts, Old Post Road was always home. She loved gardening, reading, antiques and exploring historic houses up and down the east coast. Wanda will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Predeceased by her beloved sister, Marcia Gaines, she is survived by her brother, Rev. Paul V. Gallagher of Richmond, Va.; her children, Susan Carlson of Newington, Conn., Serena Watson and her husband Conrad of Barnstable, Mass., Lisa Wasson and her husband Jack of Newburyport, Mass., and Peter and his wife Mary of New York; her niece and nephews, Andrea, Mark, Jeff and Noel Gaines; grandchildren Jack, Kate, Brian, Kevin, Liz, Sarah, Jay, Patrick and Grace; and great-grandchild, Wes.
Visiting hours will be held at O.B. Davis Funeral Home in Port Jefferson Station today, Thursday, Aug. 30, from 7 to 9 pm. Mass will be held at St. James R.C. Church in Setauket on Friday, Aug. 31, at 9:30 am. Burial will be with her beloved Carl in Oak Grove Cemetery, Stony Brook.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Wanda’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association National Office, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
Jo Anne Sperduto
Died: Saturday, August 25, 2012
Jo Anne Sperduto, 93 of Ridge, died Aug. 25. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Dominic and the late Clara (Scott) Palumbo.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Sperduto is survived by her husband, Joseph Sperduto; daughter, Joan Logarzo of East Northport; son, Robert Sperduto of Albertson; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family received visitors on Aug. 27 at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Aug. 28 at 9:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, Rocky Point. Interment followed in Pinelawn Memorial Park, Pinelawn.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Rocky Point Funeral Home of Rocky Point.
Gerard R. Iberger
Died: Friday, August 24, 2012
Gerard R. Iberger, 56 years old, a longtime community resident, died Aug. 24. He was born
April 15, 1956, in Port Jefferson, the son of Robert and Helen Iberger.
He was a truck driver for a construction company. Prior to that, he and his parents were proprietors of Iberger’s John Deere Tractor dealership.
He is survived by his mother, Helen; sisters, Jean and Petra; brother, Robert; and many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert.
Services were held at the funeral home on Aug. 28. Interment followed in the St. James Churchyard Cemetery.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket.
Lawrence M. Mead Jr.
Died: Thursday, August 23, 2012
Lawrence (Larry) M. Mead Jr., 94, of North Branford, Conn., passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 23. One of the leading aeronautical engineers of his generation, Larry spent much of his childhood in China where his parents were missionaries, speaking fluent Mandarin and riding his bicycle beside the Forbidden City. As a teenager, he returned to this country via “the slow boat to China” to attend The Hill School, in Pottstown, Pa., and then Princeton, where he earned both his undergraduate degree (class of 1940) and master’s in engineering. He later attended the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.
Larry spent his entire career with Grumman Aerospace, a leading supplier of aircraft to the Navy. He first worked on the design of the Hellcat, a shipboard fighter that battled the Japanese in World War II. He later rose to become chief designer of the A-6 attack bomber, which fought in Vietnam and Iraq, and the F-14 fighter, featured in the film “Top Gun.” These planes dominated the Navy’s arsenal for decades and were retired from service only recently. He also helped develop several other Grumman fighters and the Lunar Module that landed on the moon.
In 1983, he retired as senior vice president of Grumman, but worked another decade for the company in advisory roles including several trips to China. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1988.
In addition to his many professional accomplishments, Larry was a skilled sailor, skier, tennis player, woodworker and model shipbuilder. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Janet (Chase). They resided for many years in Huntington, where they raised their family. He is survived by three sons, Lawrence and his wife Robin of New York City, Kirtland and his wife Susan of Cambridge, Mass., and Bradford and his wife Dianne of Simsbury, Conn. A son, Jonathan (wife, Kathleen Mead Vandiver), formerly of Framingham, Mass., predeceased him. He will be deeply missed by his nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and his beloved companion, Helen Peterkin of North Branford, Conn.
A memorial service to celebrate his life was held on Saturday, Sept. 1, at the First Congregational Church, Branford, Conn. A reception was held immediately following the service.

Diane Logan
Died: Thursday, August 23, 2012
Diane F. Logan of Greenlawn died on Aug. 23 in East Northport. She was born
on Nov. 18, 1963 in Mineola, the daughter of Walter and Helen Cernis Kempski. She was a private first class in the Army from 1988 to 1991. She was a licensed practical nurse with Huntington Hospital.
Mrs. Logan is survived by her son, Lee Logan; her daughter, Jasmine White; her mother; her sisters, Janet (Ernie) Werner of Ronkonkoma, Susan Munro and Joyce (Carey) Allen; her nephews, James Werner and Patrick Munro; and her nieces, Victoria Allen and Alexandria Allen.
The funeral was held on Aug. 26 at the funeral home, followed next day by private cremation. Her ashes were buried at Calverton National Cemetery.
Donations may be made to a scholarship fund which will be set up for Lee Logan and Jasmine White.

Joan M. Duffy
Died: Thursday, August 23, 2012
Joan M. Duffy, 82 years old, of South Setauket, died Aug. 23. She was born
Oct. 16, 1929, in Astoria, the daughter of William and Julia Scully.
She was an alumna of the College of New Rochelle, a member of the Valley Stream Historical Society, American Association University of Women and the Rosary Society.
She was a retired English teacher for the NYC Board of Education in Queens.
She is survived by her husband, Francis; daughters, Mary Frances Duffy and Eileen Traslavina; sons, Michael, Thomas and John; and eight grandchildren.
Services were held at St. Gerard Majella Church, Aug. 27. Interment followed in the St. John Cemetery, Farmingdale.
Contributions made to the St. Gerard Majella Church, 300 Terryville Rd., Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776 would be appreciated.

Catherine R. McDonnell
Died: Wednesday, August 22, 2012
Catherine R. McDonnell, 86, a longtime resident of St. James, died on Aug. 22. She was the beloved sister of Julia and Raphael Delbango; and loving aunt of Robert Delbango and Richard Delbango.
A funeral Mass was held on Aug. 27 at Sts. Philip & James R.C. Church, St. James. Interment followed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Coram.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Maher Family of the St. James Funeral Home in St. James.
Thomas Mellon
Died: Monday, June 07, 2010
Thomas Mellon, 89 years old of East Setauket, died on June 7. Born on March 26, 1921, in Scotland, he was the son of the late John Mellon and Sarah Lawlor.
Mr. Mellon is survived by his daughters, June Mellon and Katrena Mellon both of East Setauket; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell; and son, Thomas.
A Mass was held at St. James Roman Catholic Church on June 10. Interment
followed at the St. James Roman Catholic Churchyard cemetery.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket.
Robert Luckett
Died: Monday, June 07, 2010
Robert A. Luckett of South Huntington died on June 7. He was born
on May 22, 1931, in Huntington, the son of Philip and Florence Bosse Luckett. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1952-54 as a corporal in the U.S. Army. He was a certified public accountant with W.T. Grant in New York City.
Mr. Luckett is survived by his daughter, Sandra Luckett of Richmond, Va.; his grandsons, Vance Barber and Robert P. Luckett; his daughter-in-law, Jenice Sesti; and his former wife, Mildred H. Luckett. He was predeceased by his son, Robert A. Luckett and his grandson, Blake Barber.
The funeral was held on June 10 at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Roman Catholic Church in Centerport, followed by interment at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Henry William Poelker
Died: Friday, June 04, 2010
In loving memory of Henry William Poelker, age 74, who died of pneumonia and a blood infection on June 4.
Mr. Poelker, a 45-year resident of Smithtown, retired from Northrop Grumman of Bethpage in the 1980s. He worked in calibration as an electronic technician. Prior to that, he worked at Sperry's. He was an only child and was preceded in death by his mother, Helen, and father, Henry.
He is survived by his only wife, Lorraine, of 34 years, his 32-year-old son Christopher Henry, and many cousins. Mr. Poelker was often seen enjoying his classical music.
A memorial visitation will be held this Saturday, June, 19, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the funeral home, 190 East Main St., Smithtown.

Margaret Hoey

Margaret M. Hoey, 85 years old of East Setauket, died on June 3. She was born
on Oct. 6, 1924, in Williston, N.D.
Mrs. Hoey is survived by her sons, Robert P. Hoey of East Setauket and Thomas Hoey of Michigan; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three sisters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Hoey; sons, Joseph and Larry; sister, Violet; and brothers, Harlen and "Bud."
A service was held on June 7. Interment followed at the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale.
Contributions made to the Long Island State Veterans Home, 100 Patriots Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790 would be appreciated.
