Anthony J. Guido

Died: Wednesday, June 02, 2010

Anthony J. Guido of Centereach died on June 2 in his 74th year. He was born icon and raised in Huntington.

Mr. Guido was the loving husband of Joyce; the devoted father of Anthony (Pamela), Melissa and Peter; and the loving grandfather of Jennelle, Alex and Samantha. Mr. Guido was a longtime dedicated volunteer at the L.I. State Veteran's Home at Stony Brook.

Funeral services were entrusted to Moloney's Lake Funeral Home of Lake Ronkonkoma.

Ilona Ellinger

Died: Monday, May 31, 2010

Professor Ilona Deak-Ebner Ellinger, born icon in Budapest, Hungary in 1913, died on May 31 at her home in Stony Brook. Daughter of a celebrated Hungarian painter and an artist herself, she received her master's degree at the Royal Hungarian Art College in 1936 and then studied at the Royal Swedish Art College in Stockholm. In 1942 she came to the United States and studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington. She received her Ph.D. in archeology from John Hopkins University. For more than 30 years she was chair of the art department of Trinity College in Washington, teaching art history, painting and drawing. She received a Fulbright Fellowship in 1963 for studies in Pakistan where she developed a keen interest in Hindu art. After her retirement from Trinity she moved to Stony Brook where she was a professor. Dr. Ellinger published several papers on Asian art and exhibited her work at shows in Washington, New York, Philadelphia and Stockholm to name a few. An avid gardener, she was for many years a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Known for her elegance and hospitality, Ilona was beloved and revered by her many pupils and friends as well as her dachshund, Gracie. There will be a memorial service to be announced at a later date.

Anne Tunik

Died: Sunday, May 30, 2010

Anne Tunik died May 30 after a long illness. She was the daughter of Toby and Morris Goldsand and sister of Miriam Gusman; she is survived only by her husband, Bernard and sons Michael, Arthur and Jonathan.

A graduate of Pratt Institute, Anne was employed by J&J Spar of New York City as a pattern maker. She then embarked on a new career as mother, homemaker and local community activist. A life member of Sea-Port Hadassah, she was elected president twice and also won Woman of the Year and Love of a Lifetime awards. Anne served in the Stony Brook University Hospital Auxiliary, and was awarded for her services.

She is remembered for her passion, warmth, friendly smile, sense of humor, and artistry and skills in oil painting, sculpture, needlepoint, embroidery, upholstery, dressmaking and cooking.

Contributions in Anne's name may be made to Sea-Port Hadassah and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Benjamin Ranin

Died: Thursday, May 27, 2010

Dr. Benjamin R. Ranin of South Huntington died on May 27. He was a former emergency room physician-CHOWS, St. John's Hospital and Mather Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Ranin was the beloved husband of the late Nieves; cherished father of Catherine (Shawn) Ostrofsky; loving papa and grandpa of Jessica, Emily and Mikayla; and devoted brother-in-law of Hilda Philip.

A funeral Mass was held on June 3 at St. Elizabeth's Church, South Huntington. Interment followed at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Maher Family of the St. James Funeral Home, in St. James.

Nicoletta R. Cambria

Died: Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Nicoletta R. Cambria of Centerport died on May 26. She was born icon on June 1, 1925 in Leesburg, Va., the daughter of Vincenzo and Sebastiana Fichera Raneri. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Cambria is survived by her sons, Vincent A. Cambria of Middle Island and Ray Cambria of East Northport; her daughter, Jo-Ann Brennan of Seaford; her grandsons, Steven Cambria, Matthew Cambria, Joseph Brennan and Roy A. Cambria; her daughters-in-law, Marie Cambria and Nadine Cambria; and her son-in-law, Thomas Brennan.

The funeral was held on May 29 at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Centerport, followed by interment at Calverton National Cemetery.

Arrangements under the direction of Nolan and Taylor-Howe Funeral Home of Northport.

Lucille C. McCarthy

Died: Sunday, May 23, 2010

Lucille C. McCarthy, longtime resident of Nesconset, died on May 23. She was the beloved wife of the late Nicholas; cherished mother of Eileen (Geoff) Styles, Joan Michael, Nicholette (John) Serocki, Thomas (Susan) and Bill (Julie); loving grandma of 14 and great-grandma of eight. A funeral Mass was held May 25 at Sts. Philip & James RC Church, St. James. Interment St. Patrick's Cemetery, Hauppauge.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Maher Family of the St. James Funeral Home in St. James.

Hariklia Varvatos

Died: Tuesday, April 09, 2013

Hariklia Varvatos, 103 years old, of Stony Brook, died April 9. She was born icon Feb. 10, 1910, in Greece, the daughter of Constantine and Panagioula Mardakis.She was a homemaker.

Hariklia is survived by her daughters, Georgia and Pat; sons, George and John; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, along with many other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore; and her son, Constantine.

Services were held at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption on April 12. Interment followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Port Jefferson.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket.

Gerard Robert Lange

Died: Monday, April 08, 2013

Gerard Robert Lange, 83, of Bainbridge and formerly of Miller Place, passed away April 8 at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. He was born icon April 4, 1930, to the late Theodore and Cunigunda Lange in Merrick.

Jerry married icon Barbara Drinkwater on May 2, 1953. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Gerry was a survivor of the Chosin Reservoir and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1952. He was a longtime resident of Miller Place and was a member of the Miller Place Volunteer Fire Department. Gerry served as first assistant chief from 1980-81 and fire chief from 1982-83. Gerry was employed as a court officer for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. Upon retirement they moved to Bainbridge. Gerry was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney and was a member of the Knight of Columbus Council 4937 and was a Sir Knight of the Fourth Degree.

He was a devoted husband to Barbara; beloved father of Deborah and her husband Edward Patrone, Keith Lange and his wife Donna, Denise Lange and Adrienne and her husband James Fortounas; beloved grandfather of Ryan, Rachel, Candice, Alexander, Stephanie, Jacob and James; and great-grandfather to Myra.

A funeral service was held April 12. Interment with honors followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to the O.B. Davis Funeral Homes of Miller Place.

Hermione Tillson Schoen

Died: Monday, April 08, 2013

Hermione “Petey” Tillson Schoen, a 49-year resident of Stony Brook in the Three Villages, died on April 8 at Essex Meadows, a retirement community in Essex, Conn., her residence since June 2004. The cause of death was lung cancer. Her ashes will be interred in a private family ceremony at the Presbyterian Church in East Setauket.

Petey graduated from Wellesley College in 1942 with a degree in economics. After moving to Stony Brook, she earned a master’s degree in library science. While enrolled in her graduate program, in 1965 she became the first children’s librarian for North Country Elementary School in Stony Brook, creating its first centralized library and reading program. After retiring from North Country in 1985, she worked part-time as a librarian in the children’s room at the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library in East Setauket.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, William Schoen; three daughters, Elizabeth Burgess of Saratoga, Calif., Joanna Tillson of Abu Dhabi, UAE, and Christina Schoen of Greenwich, Conn.; and four grandchildren.

Mitsuko Watanabe Collver

Died: Sunday, April 07, 2013

Sept. 18, 1932 ~ April 7, 2013

Mitsuko Watanabe Collver, 80, died April 7 at her home in the Long Hill neighborhood of Stony Brook from complications associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

After earning a master’s degree in library science at the University of Michigan, Mitsi joined the staff of the Stony Brook University Library as a cataloger in 1969. Seeing a need to improve handling of publications that are acquired periodically by subscription, she conceived and built one of the first serials departments anywhere and served, first as head of Serials and eventually as head of Serials and Acquisitions. Her motto was, “Good technical service is good public service.” From 1996 until her retirement in 1999, she was in charge of Special Collections.

While Mitsi had many reasons to take pride in her professional work, she is probably more widely known for a Japanese-style garden called Mitsuko En, developed with her husband’s help in their own backyard. She always delighted in bringing cheer to her home, workplace, church and other places with flowers from her indoor and outdoor gardens, arranged in the traditional styles that she had learned in Japan.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew Collver, and their daughter, Nona Marie, of Grand Rapids, Mich. Their first daughter, Nita Kimi, lived until 2002.

Interment will be at Eugene, Ore., which was their first home as newlyweds after she arrived from Kyoto, Japan, in 1955. A memorial service is to be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 13, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook, 380 Nicolls Rd., East Setauket.

John Boffoli

Died: Friday, April 05, 2013

John N. Boffoli, 67, of Port Jefferson Station, died on April 5. He was born icon June 18, 1945, in Queens.

John was the beloved husband of the late Valiery; devoted father of Jill (Dan) Harkins, Damon and Nicholas; loving son of Ida and the late Nicholas; cherished grandfather of Salvatore, John and Daniel; and dear brother of Ronald (Christine).

A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, April 9, at St. Gerard Majella R.C. Church in Port Jefferson Station. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to O.B. Davis Funeral Homes of Port Jefferson Station.

Vera Sciammarella

Died: Friday, April 05, 2013

Vera Sciammarella, 79, of East Setauket, died April 5. She was born icon Dec. 25, 1933, in Brooklyn, the daughter of John and Pauline Santos. Vera was a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughter, Jo Ann; sons, Joseph and Michael; six grandchildren; sister, Isabel; and brother, Phillip.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph.

Services were held at St. Margaret of Scotland in Selden, on April 8. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Contributions made to the Good Shepherd Hospice, 245 Old Country Road, Melville, NY 11747 would be appreciated.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket.

Esta Witczak

Died: Friday, April 05, 2013

Esta A. Witczak, 86 years old, of Setauket, died April 5. She was born icon June 5, 1926, in Queens, the daughter of Ernestine and Adele Mari. She was a retired customer service representative for Con Edison.

She is survived by her daughters, Eugenie Caverti, Geraldine Bowling, Ernestine Gabrielsen, Lauren Lingenhol and Joanne; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at the funeral home April 30. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket.

Gladys Coates

Died: Thursday, April 04, 2013

Gladys M. Coates, age 92 of St. James, formerly of Hauppauge, died on April 4.

She was the beloved wife of the late James J. Coates; loving mother of James R. (Angela) Coates, Robert (Jamie) Coates and Donna (Robert) Questel; cherished grandmother of Dylan, Melissa, Shayne, Renee and Connor.

She is survived by many other family members and friends.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, Smithtown. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
