Joseph Kastner, 89, Life magazine writer
GRANDVIEW-ON-HUDSON - Joseph Kastner, a nature writer, Life magazine writer and editor for more than 30 years, died Thursday at age 89.
Kastner's 1977 book "A Species of Eternity" was a study of early American naturalists. It was nominated for a National Book Award.
In 1987, Kastner wrote "A World of Watchers," a story of bird-watching in America.

M. Catherine Johnson
TROY - Mrs. M. Catherine McGovern Johnson, of Billings Avenue, died Sunday at Samaritan Hospital after being stricken.
A lifelong city resident, Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Troy High School.
For 25 years, she was a clerk at the Rensselaer County Health Department, retiring in 1978.
Mrs. Johnson was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and a member of its Mothers Club.
She was the widow of William H. Johnson Jr.
Survivors include a son, William M. Johnson of Loudonville; a daughter, Janice McGovern Johnson Silverman of Troy; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at Bryce Funeral Home, 276 Pawling Ave., followed at 9:30 at Sacred Heart Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.
Calling hours will be foom 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Margaret Van Wie
GUILDERLAND - Mrs. Margaret V. Van Wie, 75, of Guilderland, died Sunday at St. Peter's Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Van Wie lived in Guilderland for 50 years.
She worked for the state of New York at the Capitol Building and was a waitress at Turnpike Restaurant for 14 years.
Mrs. Van Wie was a charter member of the Guilderland Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8692 Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Willard Van Wie; three sons, Russell Van Wie of Guilderland, David Van Wie of Slingerlands and Gary Van Wie of Oneida; a daughter, Cheryl Van Wie of Guilderland Center; a sister, Frances Lewis of Loudonville; a brother, Frederick Weaver of Cape Cod, Mass.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie.

Marjorie Chamberlin
SARATOGA SPRINGS - Mrs. Marjorie Chamberlin, 85, of Route 9P, died Saturday at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Born in Wayville, Mrs. Chamberlin was a lifelong area resident. She began teaching elementary school in 1933 for District 7 in Saratoga. In 1946 she began teaching at Schuylerville Schools and then worked for District 2 of the Waterford-Halfmoon School District in 1957. She also taught for a short while at Shenendehowa Schools before retiring from the Stillwater School District in 1975.
Mrs. Chamberlin was a member of the Presbyterian-New England Congregational Church.
Her husband, Myron Chamberlin, died in 1969.
Survivors include her son, Myron G. Chamberlin of Gansevoort; her daughter, Carol LaRouech of Stillwater; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The calling hours will be 2 to 4 this afternoon and 7 to 9 tonight at Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 130 Circular St. A service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Spring burial will be in Greenridge Cemetery.

Marjorie J. Sayers
HALFMOON - Private services will be held for Mrs. Marjorie J. Sayers, 64, of Hudson River Road who died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy after a short illness.
Born in Union, N.J., Mrs. Sayers lived in Poughkeepsie and Clifton Knolls before moving to Halfmoon in 1977.
She was a homemaker. Mrs. Sayers spent the winter months in Punta Gorda, Fla., for many years.
Her husband, Edmund K. Sayers, died in October.
Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Lynn Steptoe of Friendswood, Texas, and Valerie Jean Sayers of Scotia; three sons, Edmund K. "Ken" Sayers Jr. of Waterford and Wesley Eric Sayers of Hermitage, Tenn., and Douglas Brant Sayers of Punta Gorda; a sister, Nancy Gail Early of Arizona; and seven grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, Clifton Park.

Mary Walsh
MENANDS - Miss Mary Theresa Walsh, 85, of Schuyler Heights Apartments, died Sunday at Albany Memorial Hospital.
Born in Albany, where she lived most of her life, Miss Walsh worked as a clerk for the Internal Revenue Service. She also volunteered at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany for many years.
Survivors include three nieces, Patricia A. Falzano of Saugerties, Sister Anne Sheridan, CSJ, of Cohoes and Mary Meola of St. Louis, Mo.; and two nephews, Walter F. Sheridan, Jr. of Rensselaer and John C. Sheridan of Albany.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the W.J. Lyons Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Ave., Rensselaer. A service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Third Street, Rensselaer.
Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.

Randolph Knack Sr.
AMSTERDAM - Randolph C. Knack Sr., 79, of Willard Street, died Sunday evening at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
A lifelong city resident, Mr. Knack was quality control manager at Beasley Industries for many years, retiring in 1975 due to ill health.
He was former president of Perth Volunteer Fire Department; former commander of the Sacandaga Boat Club; and a former member of the Wells Fish and Game Club.
Mr. Knack was a communicant of the former St. Joseph's Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret A. Snyder Knack, whom he married June 25, 1938; a son, Randolph C. Knack Jr. of Amsterdam; a brother, Ernest Knack of Akron, Ohio; a sister, Louise Milunski of Amsterdam; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 8:15 a.m. Thursday at Betz Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., followed at 9:15 at St. Mary's Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Raymond Caswell
ALBANY - Raymond M. Caswell, 50, of the Ann Lee Home, died Monday at St. Peter's Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Troy, Mr. Caswell was a graduate of Colonie Central High School.
He was self-employed, working on small engines.
Mr. Caswell was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his mother, Frances Film of Albany; his father and stepmother, Mitchel and Mildred Ives Caswell of Bradenton, Fla.; two sisters, Barbara Caswell of Albany and Caroline Fitzgerald of Guilderland; and a brother, Edward E. Caswell of Houston, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Memory's Garden Chapel, Watervliet-Shaker Road, Colonie.
There are no calling hours.
Cremation will take place.
Arrangements are by the Glenville Funeral Home.

Richard E. Parks
SCHENECTADY - Richard E. Parks, 34, of Elmer Avenue, died Sunday at St. Clare's Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Niskayuna, Mr. Parks was a lifelong area resident and graduate of Scotia-Glenville High School. He attended the State University of New York at Cobleskill.
Mr. Parks was a maintenance worker for a local contractor for seven years.
Survivors include four sisters, Darlene Bigelow of Esperance, Melissa Kinnally and Renee Parks, both of Scotia, and Noalle Parks of Schenectady.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Reynolds Street at Glen Avenue, Scotia.
There will be no calling hours.
Burial will be in Park Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church memorial fund or the Diabetes Association in Albany.
Arrangements are by White Funeral Home, Scotia.
