Thomas Watkins
GUILDERLAND - Thomas P. Watkins Jr., 27, of Guilderland, died Sunday at St. Peter's Hospital.
Born in Albany, Mr. Watkins was a lifelong Capital Region resident and a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy.
Mr. Watkins worked for Key Corp Services at one time.
Survivors include his parents, Marlene Polito Watkins and Thomas P. Watkins Sr. of Guilderland; a brother, Steven P. Watkins; and a sister, Stephanie Watkins. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Church, Albany.
There will be no calling hours.
Burial will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie.
Arrangements are by the McVeigh Funeral Home.

M.E. Grenander, 79, E. Berne; UAlbany professor of English
EAST BERNE - Professor M.E. Grenander, 79, of East Berne, professor emeritus of English at the University at Albany, died Thursday at home.
Born Mary Elizabeth Grenander in Rewey, Wis., Professor Grenander earned bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in English at the University of Chicago.
From 1942 to 1946, she served with the Naval Reserve and attained the rank of lieutenant.
Professor Grenander was an Aristotelian scholar and taught at the University at Albany from 1948 to 1989. During her career, she was named a "Distinguished Professor," the highest rank of professor in the state university system, in 1986.
She was a leading scholar of short-story writer Ambrose Bierce and the author of "Poems of Ambrose Bierce," which was published in 1995. Her articles have also appeared in numerous publications, including the Western Humanities Review, American Literary Realism, and Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America.
Professor Grenander was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and helped establish the Phi Beta Kappa Prize for Academic Excellence at the university's chapter.
She served on nearly 40 university councils, committees, and policy groups. She also was a visiting scholar in France and Egypt and conducted lecturing appointments in Europe, the former Soviet Union, and China.
One of her accomplishments was her founding and directing of the Institute for Humanistic Studies, which sponsored three international interdisciplinary conferences at the university between 1978 and 1980.
In 1994, Professor Grenander established one of the first privately endowed named professorships in the SUNY system in memory of her husband, Professor James W. Corbett.
She also was the first individual to have donated more than $1 million to the University at Albany, including the professorship and $250,000 to establish the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives in the University Libraries.
Professor Grenander was also a supporter of the Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown.
Survivors include two sisters, Charlotte White of Puyallup, Wash., and Karen Grenander Hanley of Miami, Fla.
Professor Grenander has made an anatomical gift to Albany Medical College.
There will be no services.
A memorial service will be held in the fall at the University at Albany.
Arrangements are by the Hans Funeral Home, Albany.

George Burke Sr., firefighter, veteran of WWII Army service
SPRAKERS - George E. Burke Sr., 77, of Brand Road, died Friday at home after a long illness.
Born and educated in Fords, N.J., Mr. Burke lived in the Sprakers area for 40 years. He also lived in the Sloansville area at one time.
He worked for the New York state Department of Transportation in Fultonville for 22 years, retiring in 1982.
Mr. Burke was an Army veteran of World War II, was of the Catholic faith, and was a life member of the Rural Grove Volunteer Fire Department.
His wife, Dorothy Schoonmaker Burke, whom he married June 1, 1948, died in 1987.
Survivors include eight sons, George E. Burke Jr. of Colorado; John, Chester, Robert, Richard, Gary and William Burke, all of Sprakers, and Steven Burke of Amsterdam; five daughters, Ann, Edna, Arlene and Deborah Burke, and Maryann Nightingale, all of Sprakers; and 19 grandchildren.
The service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3275 Memorial Squad will also conduct graveside military honors.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.

`Bonnie' Hicks
VENICE, Fla. - Mrs. Yavonne A. "Bonnie" Taylor Hicks, 52, of Venice, formerly of Albany, died May 17 at Bon Secour Hospital.
Born and educated in Middleburgh, Mrs. Hicks was a 1964 graduate of Middleburgh High School.
Mrs. Hicks was a secretary for the New York state Department of Taxation and Finance, retiring in 1991.
Her husband, Frederick G. Hicks, died in 1994.
Survivors include her mother, Evelyn Taylor of Osprey, Fla.; a brother, J. Barry Taylor of Amite, La.; three step-children, Frederick Hicks of Woburn, Mass., David Hicks of Mystic, Conn., and Susanna Mitchell of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
There will be a memorial service in Albany at a later date.
Arrangements are by the Farley Funeral Home.

Agnes Smith
ALBANY - Mrs. Agnes Weir Smith, 90, of Albany, died Friday at the Teresian House.
Born in Hillsborough, County Down, Northern Ireland, Mrs. Smith worked for Rose & Kiernan and later for Maryland Casualty insurance companies. Subsequently, she was secretary to the deputy industrial commissioner of legal affairs in the New York state Department of Labor for 23 years, retiring in 1971.
She was the widow of Thomas Scott Smith.
Survivors include a daughter, Diana Smith Martin of Latham; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 10:15 a.m. Monday at the Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham, and at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 107 State St.
Burial will be in Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Teresian House Foundation or the church.

Aileen Fox
SCOTIA - Mrs. Aileen B. Fox, of Cambridge Drive, died Friday at Kingsway Arms Nursing Home, Schenectady, after a short illness.
Born in Schenectady, Mrs. Fox was a lifelong area resident.
She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in Schenectady.
Her husband, William A. Fox, died in 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Leslee N. Barton of Scotia; and two granddaughters.
Services will be at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., and at 9 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, both in Schenectady.
Burial will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.

Andrew Marinello
MECHANICVILLE - Andrew Marinello died Thursday at Samaritan Hospital after a long illness.
Born and educated in Mechanicville, Mr. Marinello worked at the Westvaco plant until it closed. He was later a heavy equipment mechanic at the Adirondack Steel Co. until retiring in 1988.
Survivors include his wife, Jeannette Stagliano Marinello, whom he married June 28, 1953; a daughter, Diane Marie Marinello Cline of Ballston Spa; a son, Anthony M. Marinello of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Paul Marinello of Schenectady; and five grandchildren.
The services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at the T.L. Cassidy Funeral Home, 126 N. Second Ave., and at 9:30 a.m. a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Assumption-St. Paul Church, William Street.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.

Anna Kincaid
ROTTERDAM - Mrs. Anna L. Kincaid, 83, of the Hallmark Nursing Centre, died there Thursday after a short illness.
Mrs. Kincaid was born in Exeter, N.H., and reared in Kensington, N.H. She resided in Massachusetts for several years and came to New York in 1946. For a time, she lived in the Lake George area before moving to Albany.
Her husband, W. Edward Kincaid, died in 1977.
Survivors include three sons, Russell Kincaid of Albany, W. Lee Kincaid of Springfield, Ore., and Daniel Kincaid of Bolton Landing; a daughter, Janet Benoit of Rotterdam; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave.
Burial will be in Kensington, N.H., Cemetery at a later date.
Calling hours will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Bernice Niemiec
ROTTERDAM - Mrs. Bernice M. Niemiec, 76, of Edith Lane, died Friday at home after a long illness.
Born in Schenectady, Mrs. Niemiec attended Draper High School and was a lifelong area resident.
At one time, she worked in the tube department at the General Electric Co. Subsequently for more than 25 years, she was the banquet manager for Town Tavern on Altamont Avenue before retiring.
Mrs. Niemiec was a communicant of the Church of St. Adalbert.
She also was a member of the Rotterdam Elks Lodge and Polish American Veterans ladies auxiliaries.
Survivors include her husband, Andrew Niemiec, whom she married Sept. 26, 1943; a son, Dennis Niemiec of Rotterdam; a daughter, Arlene Griesemer of Guilderland; a brother, Joseph Mrozek of Georgia; three sisters, Ida LuBrant and Dorothy Nedvidek, both of Rotterdam, and Virginia Vail of Albany; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 8:30 a.m Monday at the Leszczynski Funeral Home, 716 Crane St., and at 9 a.m. at the Church of St. Adalbert, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.
Burial will be in St. Adalbert Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, during which the PAV Auxiliary will conduct a service at 7.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Community Hospice of Schenectady.
