Jane Hess
GUILDERLAND - Mrs. Jane McKamey Hess, 73, of East Lydius Street, died Tuesday at an area health care facility after a short illness.
Born in Berwick, Pa., Mrs. Hess was a 1945 graduate of Berwick High School.

She was a member of the Guilford Church of Christ in Berwick.

Mrs. Hess was a secretary for the American Car and Foundry in Berwick.

After moving to Madison, Conn., in 1951, she was a secretary for the Madison School District and then the North Madison Congregational Church before retiring in 1984 and moving to Schenectady.

Mrs. Hess was a member of the Lynnwood Reformed Church.

Her husband, Derl J. Hess, died on 1998.

Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey J. and Michael J. Hess, both of Guilderland; two brothers, Warren McKamey Jr. of Williamsport, Pa., and Francis Roll of Berwick, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the Pinegrove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick, Pa., at a later date.

There are no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308.

Arrangements are by the New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, Colonie.

George Kavoukian
CLIFTON PARK - George Kavoukian, 72, of Southbury Road, died Tuesday at home after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Albany, Mr. Kavoukian was a graduate of Bethlehem High School. He was a yard foreman for Leaseway Transportation in Selkirk for 22 years, retiring in 1988. He and his father were co-owners and operators of Pearl Cash Market in Albany for 25 years.

Mr. Kavoukian was a member of the Watervliet Elks Lodge 1500 and attended St. Mary's Historic Church of Albany.

He was the widower of Peggy Duffy Kavoukian.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Kavoukian of North Greenbush and Chris Deyo of Latham; a brother, Martin Kavoukian of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; his fiancee, Peggy Pendel Deyo of Clifton Park; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9, followed at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Historic Church of Albany, corner of Pine and Lodge streets, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.

Ella Harppinger
GLOVERSVILLE - Mrs. Ella E. Harppinger, 81, formerly of Helwig Street, died Tuesday at the Fulton County Regional Health Care Facility after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam, Mrs. Harppinger attended the Gloversville Wesleyan Church.

She was a homemaker.

Ruskin Harppinger, whom she married in 1942, died in 1945.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph and Ellsworth E. Whitbeck, both of Gloversville; a daughter, Kathleen Meacham of Ravena; a sister, Gladys Bania of Johnstown; a brother, Robert L. Cline of Gloversville; and five grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville.

Contributions may be made to the Ayers Memorial Animal Shelter, 133 Hilltop Road, Sprakers, NY 12166.

Edward Cuomo
SCHENECTADY - Edward Cuomo, 77, of State Street, died Nov. 1 at Ellis Hospital.
There are no known survivors.

Burial will be at 1 this afternoon in Vale Cemetery.

There are no calling hours or services.

Arrangements are by the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St.

Catherine B. McBride
SARATOGA SPRINGS - Mrs. Catherine B. McBride, 79, of the Wesley Health Care Center, died Wednesday at the residence.
Born in Troy, Mrs. McBride attended Emma Willard School and was a graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy.

She also attended Troy Business College.

For more than 20 years, Mrs. McBride worked at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where for 15 years, she was senior secretary in the Physics Department.

She was a volunteer for Samaritan and Saratoga hospitals.

Mrs. McBride was a communicant of St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Ladies Guild of Charity.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Robert B. McBride; four daughters, Linda Antes of Pittsburg, Pa., Dr. Edna Ann Pytlak of Brooklyn, Maria Bucciferro of Saratoga Springs, and Mary Joan Bluemich of Aachen, Germany; a son, Dr. R. Bruce McBride of Delmar; a brother, Charles P. Boland of Troy; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave.

Burial will follow in the family plot at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway.

Bertha Root
POESTENKILL - Mrs. Bertha Miller Root, 84, of Flint Drive, died Tuesday at home after a short illness.
Mrs. Root was born in Watervliet and graduated from Watervliet High School.

She was a nurse's aide at Samaritan Hospital in Troy from 1958 to 1968. She subsequently worked as a transcriber for the New York Court of Claims from 1968 until her retirement in 1979.

Mrs. Root was a member of First Wesleyan Church of Watervliet and served as Primary Department superintendent, the Young Missionaries Workers' Band superintendent, Sunday school superintendent and Wesleyan Missionary Society president. She was also church pianist, church board member and a trustee.

She served as an officer of the Eastern New York Holiness Association.

Survivors include three daughters, Lois Merritt of Fayetteville, N.C., Joyce Dombrosky of East Poestenkill and Rebecca Lynn Root of Troy; a son, Timothy P. Root of North Greenbush; a sister, Ruth Jazarnski of Troy; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Wesleyan Church of Watervliet, 529 Fifth Ave., Watervliet.

Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church, 529 Fifth Ave., Watervliet, NY 12189.

Arrangements are by the Morris-Stebbins-Miner & Sanvidge Funeral Home, 312 Hoosick St., Troy.

Barton Steadwell
ESPERANCE - Barton C. Steadwell, 74, formerly of Esperance, died Tuesday at the Green Manor Nursing Home in Ghent.
Born in the town of Florida, Mr. Steadwell had lived in Esperance for many years before moving to Gloversville in 1980. He moved to the nursing home in June of this year.

He attended a one-room schoolhouse at Braman Corners as well as Delanson High School.

Mr. Steadwell was an Army veteran of World War II, serving under General George Patton.

He was a leather worker at Johnstown Leather.

Survivors include a daughter, Shiela Beno of South Berwick, Maine; a brother, Keith Steadwell of Esperance; four sisters, Jane Lansing and Audrey Trudell, both of Scotia, Lucy Bellinger of Fultonville and Vala Jackson of Voorheesville; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Esperance Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the White-Van Buren Funeral Home, Delanson.

Adelaide Wehr
SCHENECTADY - A graveside service will be held for Adelaide Bishop Wehr, who died Oct. 22 at the Masonic Home in Utica.
The service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday in the Urn Garden at Park Cemetery, Scotia.

Arrangements are by the Jones Funeral Home.

Lorraine Madriska, 96, piano instructor, played at hospitals
AMSTERDAM - Mrs. Lorraine Aubrey Madriska, 96, of Ramsey Avenue, died Monday at home.
Born in Ford City, Pa., Mrs. Madriska moved to Amsterdam in 1958. She was a graduate of Ford City High School and studied piano and organ.

Mrs. Madriska was a piano instructor in the Amsterdam area for many years. She played at Amsterdam Memorial and St. Mary's hospitals for more than 27 years. She was recently recognized as being one of the last living piano players of the silent movie era.

She was a former member of the Trinity Reformed Church and a member of the United Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Madriska was a member of the Amsterdam Area Community Concerts; the A.A.R.P.; and the Century Club of Amsterdam.

Survivors include a daughter, Lorraine A. Shelton of Newfane; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann's Episcopal Church, Division St.

There are no calling hours.

Burial of cremains will take place in Fairview Cemetery at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the United Presbyterian Church Rebuilding Fund, 25 Church St.

Arrangements are by the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home.
