Mildred Schultz
FONDA - Private services will be held for Miss Mildred R. Schultz, 79, of Barber Street, who died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a short illness.
Born in Albany, Miss Schultz was a graduate of Albany High School. She moved to Fonda in 1974.
Miss Schultz was a lab technician for the New York state Department of Health in Albany. She was later a weekend cook and housekeeper for the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Shrine in Fonda.
She was a communicant of St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church.
Survivors include a brother, Herbie Schultz of Albany; and three sisters, Margaret Rakebrano of Westmere, Pearl Bensinger of Albany and Jean Schultz of California.
Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Albany.
Arrangements are by the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, Fultonville.

Rita Macken
WATERVLIET - Mrs. Rita Corbett Macken, 75, of Watervliet, died on Wednesday.
Mrs. Macken was born in Watervliet and moved to Latham in 1938. She returned to Watervliet in 1972.
Mrs. Macken worked for the Cluett & Peabody Co. in Troy for 12 years. She subsequently worked for the state Department of Health for more than 10 years, retiring in 1986.
She was a communicant of St. Brigid's Church and a member of its Rosary Society. She was a former member of the St. Ambrose Altar Rosary Society.
Mrs. Macken was a member of the Southern Tier Senior Center in Schodack and the Dyken Pond Lake Association.
She was the widow of John J. Corbett and Theodore D. Macken.
Survivors include two daughters, Marian R. Corbett and Rita A. Fahr, both of Watervliet; two sons, John J. Corbett of Portsmouth, R.I., and Edward J. Macken of Watervliet; a brother, Joseph T. Hogan of Latham; a sister, Charlene Leach of Stuyvesant; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at the Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham, and at 11 at St. Brigid's Church, Fourth Avenue, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.
Calling hours are from 4 this afternoon until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Colonie.

Robert L. Simon Sr.
MELROSE - Robert L. Simon Sr., who was a supervisor in the plastics recycling department of Ultrepet of Albany for more than 30 years, died Wednesday at Albany Medical Center Hospital after being stricken at home. Mr. Simon, of Gutbrodt Road, was 63.
Born in the Grants Hollow section of Melrose, Mr. Simon was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School.
He was a member of the Needle Traders Local Union of Albany for more than 30 years.
Mr. Simon was a member of the Melrose Volunteer Fire Department for many years.
He was a member of the Army National Guard in Troy. He was also a local craftsman who had built several homes in the Melrose area.
Mr. Simon was a member of the Melrose United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Campbell Simon, whom he married Nov. 23, 1963; four sons, Edward M. and Robert L. Simon Jr., both of Melrose, Nelson G. Simon of Schaghticoke and John L. Simon of Valley Falls; his mother, Grace DeLong McChesney of Watervliet; two brothers, John Simon of Stillwater and Phillip Simon of Melrose; two sisters, Anna Williams of Colonie and Maxine Cunningham of Melrose; and eight grandchildren.
The services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Chase Funeral Home, 173 Main St., Schaghticoke. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 this afternoon and 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke.

Irving Figelman
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Irving Figelman, who was the former owner of I. Figelman and Son, dealers in scrap metals, died Oct. 28 at his Hollywood home after a long illness. Mr. Figelman, formerly of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., was 86.
Born in New York City, Mr. Figelman was a 1934 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School. He lived in Saratoga Springs for nearly 50 years before relocating to Florida in 1966.
He was a member of the Jewish Community Center and the Masonic Lodge, both in Saratoga Springs. He was also an anchorman on the B'nai B'rith bowling team.
Survivors include his wife, Freda Figelman; two daughters, Adele Abrahamse of Charlottesville, Va., and Anita Zatz of Boca Raton, Fla.; two brothers, Sol and Morris Figelman, both of Saratoga Springs; two sisters, Bertha Garbarsky of Queens and Betty Keveles of Sunrise, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Burial was in Temple Beth El Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Riverside-Gordon Memorial Chapel.

Randy J. Stata
CAIRO - Randy J. Stata, who was a line foreman in the telephone and cable television industry, died Tuesday in Rhode Island as a result of a work-related accident. Mr. Stata, formerly of Stillwater, was 34.
Born in Troy, Mr. Stata was raised in Stillwater and attended Stillwater Central School. He also completed electrical training.
He worked for the Catskill Mountain Communications Co., for the past five years. Previously, he worked for the former Statewide Cable Co. of Stillwater.
Survivors include his wife, Alyssa Hodor; a son, Ryan Stata of Cairo; a daughter, Lacy Stata of Cairo; his mother, Diana Burgess Stata of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two brothers, Paul Pierre of North Carolina and William S. Stata of Grafton; two sisters, Wendy Pierre Mainville of Cohoes and Elizabeth Stata Abare of Tampa, Fla.
The service will be held at 8 p.m. today at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S. Main St., Mechanicville. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy.

Virginia Whalen, had owned Whalen's Grocery Store
AMSTERDAM - Miss Virginia Mae Whalen, who was the owner and operator of the former Whalen's Grocery Store in Fort Johnson for several years, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital. Miss Whalen, a resident of Montgomery Meadows, formerly of Fort Johnson Avenue in Fort Johnson, was 83.
Miss Whalen was born in Fort Johnson and lived there all her life. She attended Fort Johnson schools.
Miss Whalen was a member of the United Methodist Church on Golf Course Road and a former member of the Molly Brant Club in Fort Johnson, the Fort Johnson Fire Company Auxiliary and the Sir William Johnson Seniors.
She attended the coronation of the Queen of England in the 1950s.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Wittemeier of Fort Johnson.
A service is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave..
Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.
A calling hour will precede the service at the funeral home.
Contributions in Miss Whalen's memory may be made to the Fort Johnson Fire Company or to the Sir William Johnson Seniors, in care of the funeral home.

Gladys J. Hewitt, longtime owner of Hewitt's Market
BERLIN - Mrs. Gladys J. Hewitt, who with her husband, owned and operated Hewitt's Market from 1941 to 1972, died Saturday at the Center for Living & Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vt. Mrs. Hewitt, of School Street, was 94.
Mrs. Hewitt was born in Berlin.
She was a lifelong member and a former deaconess of the First Baptist Church of Berlin and a member of Sarah's Circle and the Berlin Senior Citizens.
Her husband, Erskine S. Hewitt, whom she married Jan. 1, 1926, died in 1977.
Survivors include two sons, Rodney E. Hewitt and Bruce A. Hewitt, both of Berlin, two grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
A service is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, 66 Armsby Road, Petersburgh.
Burial will follow in Berlin Community Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

`Bessie' Ballmes, 100
ROTTERDAM - Mrs. Elizabeth "Bessie" Ballmes, 100, of Irene Street, died Sunday at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady after a short illness.
Mrs. Ballmes was born in Rotterdam Junction at Lock House 25 on the Erie Canal.
During World War II, she was employed at General Electric Co. in Schenectady.
Mrs. Ballmes also provided child care for many years for many area families.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church.
Her husband, George E. Ballmes, whom she married in 1929, died in 1944.
Survivors include a son, Robert G. Ballmes of Rotterdam; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Bond Funeral Home, at Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, and at 10 at St. John the Baptist Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
Contributions in memory of Mrs. Ballmes may be made to the American Cancer Society or to St. John the Baptist Church.

Achille J. Vitti
CLIFTON PARK - Achille J. Vitti, 80, of Grooms Pointe Drive, formerly of Smith Hill Road in Center Brunswick, died Friday at the Glendale Nursing Home in Glenville.
Mr. Vitti was born and educated in Stamford, Conn.
He retired in 1986 after 20 years as the northeast sales representative for the DoAll Co. in Chicago, Ill.
Before that, Mr. Vitti was a tool and die maker with the Electrolux Corp. in Stamford.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Stamford and Our Lady of Victory Church in Troy.
An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Vitti served as a staff sergeant.
Survivors include his wife, Fannie Grimaldi Vitti, whom he married Sept. 12, 1942; a son, George L. Vitti of Clifton Park; two brothers, Thomas Vitti of New Milford, Conn., and Vince Presti of Stamford; four sisters, Mary Eklund of New Jersey, Nancy Antonowicz of New Milford, Christine Martinelli of Cape Cod, Mass., and Annie Sansone of Stamford; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Ave., Stamford.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Darien, Conn.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lacerenza Funeral Home, 8 Schuyler Ave., Stamford.
