Eleanore Grose, 103, wrote column for Ballston Journal
BALLSTON SPA - Miss Eleanore Grose, 103, who served as a reporter, columnist, linotype operator and proofreader for various family publications including the Ballston Journal, died Tuesday at the Maplewood Manor.
Miss Grose was born in Ballston Spa.
After graduating from Wells and Skidmore Colleges, she taught English in Millbrook, Dutchess County.
In the late 1930s, Miss Grose returned to Ballston Spa to work in the family business. During this time, she also compiled the Ballston Journal's birthday column.
During World II, Miss Grose worked at the Saratoga County Rationing Board.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, serving as deaconess, church historian and choir member for many years. For 33 years, Mrs. Grose was church clerk.
She was a charter member of the Saratoga County Historical Society and served as editor of its quarterly newsletter for a number of years.
Survivors include three nephews, C.H. Grose of Ballston Spa, Robert Grose of McLean, Va., and Richard Grose of Venice, Fla.; several grandnephews and grandnieces; and great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the First Baptist Church.
Burial will be in the family plot at Ballston Village Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, 202 Milton Ave., Ballston Spa, or the Ballston Spa Public Library, 21 Milton Ave., Ballston Spa.

Arthur Lyle Burtt Jr., Navy veteran of Vietnam War
AMSTERDAM - Arthur Lyle Burtt Jr., who was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Burtt, of West Main Street, was 63.
A lifelong city resident, Mr. Burtt was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute.
During the Vietnam War, he served aboard the USS Newport News.
For 16 years, Mr. Burtt was a machine operator at the General Electric Co.
He was a member of John J. Wyszomirski Post 701 American Legion.
Mr. Burtt was of the Roman Catholic faith.
Survivors include a brother, Michael L. Burtt of Amsterdam.
A service will be held at noon Monday at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., where a calling hour will begin at 11.
Burial with military honors will take place in Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
Contributions to charity of choice may be made in care of the funeral home.

William W. Egan
BALLSTON LAKE - William W. Egan, who owned his own real estate business for more than 30 years, died Thursday at home after a short illness. Mr. Egan, of Midline Road, was 87.
Mr. Egan was a graduate of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School and a lifelong resident of Ballston Lake.
He attended Ithaca College, where he was the youngest player to be named to its varsity baseball team.
Mr. Egan later played semi-professional baseball.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Aleutian Islands.
From 1946 to 1969, Mr. Egan worked for the former American Locomotive Co., operated an insurance business, and also became a licensed real estate broker.
Mr. Egan was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church.
He was a member of the Ballston Lake Fire Department and the Town of Ballston Community Library.
Mr. Egan served as chairman of the Saratoga County Democratic Party; was a candidate for the Town of Ballston Supervisor and ran for a congressional seat in the 22nd Congressional District.
He was an early proponent of Medicare and of revising safety and planning regulations to accommodate the growth of his hometown.
Mr. Egan was a member of the Clifton Park Elks and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Joan Koonz Egan; four daughters, Maureen Egan Burhmaster of Edina, Minn. and Diamond Point, Eileen Egan Mack of Morrisville, Tracy Egan of Ballston Lake, Maggie Egan Cummings of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; two sisters, Dorothy Tomber of St. Louis, Mo. and Anita Wagner of Saratoga; and six grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Grace Church, 73 Midline Road.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ballston Spa.
Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Grace Church.
Arrangements are by the Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home.

Alphonse J. Marchand
LENOX, Mass. - A memorial and committal service was held for Alphonse Joseph Marchand, who was an architect for several different firms. Mr. Marchand, 93, of Kimball Farms Retirement Community, formerly of Schenectady, NY, died Friday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center.
Born in Lebanon, N.H., Mr. Marchand was a 1925 graduate of Lebanon High School.
He was a 1932 graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor's degree in architecture.
In 1937, he became an industrial appearance designer for the General Electric Co. in Pittsfield, Mass., transferring to GE's Schenectady facility in 1961.
Mr. Marchand retired from GE in 1973.
He was a recipient of the General Electric Award for Inventors.
After his retirement, Mr. Marchand worked for Albany International designing international factories and corporate offices.
He was a communicant of St. Mark Church, Pittsfield.
Mr. Marchand was a member of the Elfun Society.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lena Marie Touchette Marchand; three sons, Paul Marchand of Round Lake, Peter Marchand of Divide, Colo., and Phillip Marchand of Toronto, Ontario; a daughter, Claire Marchand of Cochise, Ariz.; a sister, Stella Mercier of Norwood, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
Burial was in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
Arrangements were by the Roche Funeral Home, Lenox, Mass.

Ann Marie Sarro
SARATOGA SPRINGS - Mrs. Ann Marie Lenahan Sarro, 57, who was a private duty nurse's aide for 33 years, died Wednesday at the Fairview Commons, Great Barrington, Mass. after a long illness.
Mrs. Sarro was born in New York City.
Mrs. Sarro was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society.
She was a communicant of the Church of St. Peter.
Survivors include three sons, William J. and Patrick A. Sarro, both of Greenfield Center, and Edward J. Sarro of Saratoga Springs; three daughters, Lorretta A. Sarro of Green Acres, Fla., Patricia L. Diaz of Greenfield Center and Mary P. Sarro of Marion, Md.; a sister, Debbie Brenenstuhl of Hysperia, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
There are no services.
Calling hours are from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Simone's Funeral Home, 105 Lake Ave.

Ardito Desio, 104, Italian explorer

ROME - Ardito Desio, an Italian explorer, geologist and cartographer who organized the first expedition to reach the top of Himalayan peak K-2, has died. He was 104.
The geology and paleontology professor continued leading scientific expeditions into his 90s.
His greatest achievement came in 1954 when a 12 man-expedition that he organized took two climbers - Bruno Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni - to the top of K-2, the world's second highest mountain after neighboring Mt. Everest.
In 1962, he became the first Italian to reach the South Pole.

Arthur Aronowitz
SCHENECTADY - Arthur Aronowitz, who was the proprietor of the former Modern Bed Spring Company on Crane Street, died Wednesday at home. Mr. Aronowitz, of Rugby Road, was 86.
Mr. Aronowitz was a lifelong city resident.
Mr. Aronowitz was a furniture manufacturers representative for several different companies.
He was a member of the Agudat Achim Congregation.
Mr. Aronowitz was a member of the Schenectady Jewish Community Center and for many years ran its bingo game.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Schure Aronowitz; a son, Dr. Mark Aronowitz of Niskayuna; a daughter, Barbara Reichard of Walnut Creek, Calif.; a sister, Lillian Birkhahn of Broomall, Pa.; four grandchildren; and a granddaughter.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union St.
Burial will be in the Agudat Achim Cemetery, Rotterdam.
The period of mourning will be observed at the residence of Dr. and Mrs. Mark Aronowitz, 2214 Budd Terrace, Niskayuna, on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Brett A. Oliver
LATHAM - Brett A. Oliver, who was a construction laborer with Allied Craftsman Construction Co. of Schenectady, died Monday while vacationing the Bahamas, after being stricken. Mr. Oliver, of New Loudon Road, was 30. Born in Stamford, Mr. Oliver was a 1989 graduate of Shaker High School and also attended Hudson Valley Community College.
Survivors include his parents, William D. Oliver of Latham and Gloria Lighte Oliver of Mechanicville; a brother, Chad Oliver of Latham; a sister, Victoria Walsh of Loudonville; and his maternal grandmother, Helen Lighte of Stamford.
A service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S. Main St., Mechanicville.
Burial will be in Stamford Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
