James Millaway Sherwood, Lt. Col.
USMC Ret.

Schenectady - James Millaway Sherwood, Lt. Col. USMC Ret., died Saturday, June 25, 2005, at Ellis Hospital, after a long illness.

The son of an Army surgeon, he was born at Walter Reed Hospital in  Washington, DC, February 24, 1922. After spending his youth in Panama,  Texas, Colorado, Minnesota and New York State, Col. Sherwood graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in June, 1944 (class of 1945) and entered the U.S. Marine Corps. After Marine training Col. Sherwood was a platoon commander in the battle for Okinawa, and on Guam before going to Tstingtao and Tainjin (Tien Tsin), China. Following the end of World War II, Col. Sherwood had duty at Camp Pendleton, CA, Louisville, KY and U.S. Army Tank School, Fort Knox, KY. During the Korean War, Col. Sherwood was commander of the tank company and received Bronze Stars from the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy, a letter of commendation from the Turkish government and a Distinguished Unit Citation. Following the Korean War he was stationed at Quantico, VA, Sandia Base, NM, Okinawa, and a commander of a tank battalion at Camp Pendleton, CA. His last duty was at the Pentagon, after which he took positions at G.E. in Schenectady and later  South Carolina.

A member of St. George's Episcopal Church, Col. Sherwood was a former vestryman and acolyte. A longtime resident of the Stockade neighborhood, he was a former president of the Stockade Association. He received the Schenectady Heritage Foundation Award for Outstanding Contribution to Historic Preservation in 2000 for the Widow Bohanan House (1815) and the Adolf Van De Moor House (1872). He was also a president of the Linton High School PTO.

Col. Sherwood is survived by his wife of 57 years, Susanna Kitts Sherwood; two daughters, Suzanna Sherwood Unger of Winter Park, FL and Emily Elizabeth Sherwood of Lynn, MA; a grandson, James Unger; a granddaughter, Katherine Unger; and a sister, Susan Sherwood Wood of Carmel, CA. A daughter, Fredrika Anna Sherwood, died in 1992.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, July 2, 2005 at 10 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, 85 Lake Hill Road, Burnt Hills, NY. There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Teddy Sherwood Memorial Fund, care of Office Development, School of Journalism, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO 65211-1200.

Arrangements are by the  Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., Schenectady, NY.

Frank G. Sorbero, Sr.
Amsterdam - Frank G. Sorbero, Sr., entered to eternal rest with the Lord on June 27, 2005.

Born October 13, 1923, in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of the late Salvatore and Rubina Sorbero. He was a 1941 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School, serving on many reunion committees.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 843rd anti–aircraft battalion in the China–Burma–India Theater of operations. He served as Commander of the CBI Veteran's Association, Capital District BASHA of Albany. Frank was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Amsterdam, serving as usher, lector, member of the church choir, served as vice president on the parish council, president and vice president and Chaplin of the Saint Anthony Society, member of Holy Name Society and Eucharistic minister. He was a former member of Knights of Columbus 209, Charter member of Catholic War Veterans 399. He was a store manager for The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, and later employed by Nichols Discount City and Mohawk Finishing Products in Amsterdam.

He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Elvira (Del Santo) on January 6, 1994 and two sisters, Mary Murrane and Rose Sorbero.

Survivors include sons, Frank of Amsterdam and Thomas M. Sorbero (Karen) of Joliet, IL; a daughter, Mary Beth Krajcir (John) of Amsterdam; four brothers, Anthony, Joseph, John and Thomas, all of Amsterdam; two sisters, Carmella Brooks of Schenectady and Lucia Nocian of Rotterdam Junction; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Wednesday 4 to 8 p.m. at DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S in Amsterdam.

Funeral services will be 8:30 a.m., Thursday at DeStefano Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 39 Saint John Street in Amsterdam with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, family requests donations may be made in his memory to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church or Saint Michael's Cemetery Fund.

Carol B. Swanson
Loudonville - Carol B. Swanson, 82, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2005 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital, due to complications from a motor vehicle accident.
Carol was born on September 8, 1922 in Troy, New York to the late John S. and Isabel Spotten Baker. She was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School and Russell Sage College.

Carol was a bookkeeper at Marine Midland Bank for 15 years before her retirement. She did volunteer work at CHP in Latham and was a member and did volunteer work for the Shaker Heritage Society. She was also a member at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Latham. She was a talented craftsperson and enjoyed making miniature doll houses and furnishings, sewing, and jigsaw puzzles.

Carol is survived by her four children, David (Lenora) Swanson of Elgin, IL, Lisa (Allen) Hibner of Penfield, Alan (Donna) Swanson of Glenmont, and Wendy (Rocco Masercola) Swanson of Schenectady; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, Nicholas, Jenny, Danielle, Justin and Dana; two step grandchildren, Tina and Toni; and six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Carol was predeceased by her husband, Carlton H. Swanson, he died on June 7, 2005; her sister, Marion Baker and her brother, Freeman Baker.

The family would like to thank Dr. Carmen Giuliano for his care of our mother and generous time helping the family through this difficult period.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155 – south of Central Ave.). Interment will follow at Memory's Garden in Colonie. Calling hours will be on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205 in memory of Carol B. Swanson.

James Scott Taussig
St. Cloud, FL - James Scott Taussig, 35, of St. Cloud, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2005.
James was born to Allen F. and Donna Taussig on December 27, 1969 in Schenectady. James was a sergeant with the Osceola County Sheriff's Department, and was currently in his tenth year with the Osceola County Correctional Facility.

He is survived by his son, Justin Tyler Taussig; a daughter,  Taylor Nicole Taussig; a step-daughter, Tabitha Dykes; and their mother, Tammy Lee Taussig. James is also survived by his mother and step-father, Donna and George  Jones of North Carolina; his brother and sister-in-law, Mark A. and Carol A. Taussig of New York; nieces, Emma Marie Taussig and Erica Lynn Taussig.

Visitation and funeral services for James Taussig were held Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at Osceola Memory Gardens Funeral Home in Kissimmee.

Arrangements were under the direction of Osceola Memory Gardens Cemetery Funeral Home and Crematory, Kissimmee.

John and Barbara (Dunn) Thomas
Glenville - John L. Thomas, 76, and his wife Barbara J. Dunn Thomas, 75, of Swaggertown Road, tragically passed away along side each other, on Sunday afternoon, June 26, 2005. They both sadly died following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

John was born in Schenectady on May 16, 1929, a son of the late Anthony and Martella Esposito Tommasone, Sr. He was raised and educated in Schenectady schools. John was an accomplished musician, who cherished his accordion and keyboard. He was a member of the Local 85 Musicians Union. John was a very gifted craftsman and master plumber. Throughout his career as a plumbing and heating contractor, John was employed at Union College and owned and operated Thomas Plumbing and Heating.

Barbara was born in Schenectady on February 19, 1930, a daughter of the late Lewis and Alma Herzog Dunn. She was educated and raised in Scotia.

After World War II, Barbara worked at General Electric as a secretary. She spent most of her life being a devoted homemaker and taking great care of her family. For 10 years Barbara was employed as a unit secretary for the Glendale Nursing Home. She loved cooking for her family, camping in the Adirondacks, was an avid bird watcher, and truly took pleasure in tracking family genealogy.

John and Barbara were united in marriage on June 30, 1951. The couple's survivors, who were their greatest enjoyment, include their children, John L. Jr. and his wife, Susan Thomas of Charlton, Gail and her husband, Steven Lysiak of Esperance, Martella and her husband, Matthew Van De Bogart of Scotia, Christopher Thomas of Rexford, the late Robert S. Thomas and Glen Thomas. John's siblings include, Mary Corvino of Glenville, Jennie Grecco of Glenville, Marlene Allen of Schenectady, Anthony Thomas, Jr. and his wife, Irene of Colonie, and the late Carm Damania and Rose Sarrutto. Brother-in-law of John Sarrutto, and the late John Grecco, Richard Allen and Fred Corvino. Barbara's siblings include Carolyn Vincent of Strafford, NY, Andrew Dunn and his wife, Muriel of Mineral, VA, William Dunn and his wife, Carol of Rolystone, Perth, Australia, and the late Lois Neimi. Sister-in-law of Harry Neimi of Clawson, Michigan. Also survived by 12 grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and their devoted dog, “Joey.”

Calling hours, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be held Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, Union at N. Jay Streets, Schenectady. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Gregg officiating.

John and Barbara will be buried next to their sons, following the service in Park Cemetery, Scotia.

May O. Weed
Scotia - May O. (Osterhout) Weed, 70, of Scotia, died Monday evening, June 27, 2005 at St. Peter's Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Florence (Smith) Osterhout and a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School and Hudson Valley Community College with a degree in nursing. May was a registered nurse at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady for many years, retiring in 1999, and a member of the Bellevue Reformed Church.

She was predeceased on October 10, 1964 by her husband, Gerald L. Weed Sr., whom she married November 6, 1954.

She is survived by her five children, May V. Steiner of Schenectady, Cheryl A. Weed of Danbury, CT, Carol W. Zachman of Reading, PA, Judy M. Weed of Granville and Gerald L. Weed Jr. of Mt. Home, ID; two sisters, Florence A. Willey of Albany and Carol A. Walsh of Raymore, MO. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning, June 30, 2005 at 10 a.m. at Bond Funeral Home, Broadway & Guilderland Ave., Schenectady. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment in Parkview Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Mrs. Weed's memory to Community Hospice, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12309.

Lorraine Madriska, 96, piano instructor, played at hospitals
AMSTERDAM - Mrs. Lorraine Aubrey Madriska, 96, of Ramsey Avenue, died Monday at home.
Born in Ford City, Pa., Mrs. Madriska moved to Amsterdam in 1958. She was a graduate of Ford City High School and studied piano and organ.

Mrs. Madriska was a piano instructor in the Amsterdam area for many years. She played at Amsterdam Memorial and St. Mary's hospitals for more than 27 years. She was recently recognized as being one of the last living piano players of the silent movie era.

She was a former member of the Trinity Reformed Church and a member of the United Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Madriska was a member of the Amsterdam Area Community Concerts; the A.A.R.P.; and the Century Club of Amsterdam.

Survivors include a daughter, Lorraine A. Shelton of Newfane; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann's Episcopal Church, Division St.

There are no calling hours.

Burial of cremains will take place in Fairview Cemetery at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the United Presbyterian Church Rebuilding Fund, 25 Church St.

Arrangements are by the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home.

`Sonny' Sivik, 65, wrote opera on life of Kateri Tekakwitha
AMSTERDAM - Denytro "Sonny" Sivik, 65, of Beacon Avenue, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital.
Mr. Sivik was born in Broadalbin.

He earned a master's degree in composition from the Mannes School of Music in New York City and received a diploma in composition from the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Mass.

He had studied music since age 8 and his teachers included Edgar Curtis, Pablo Casals and Samuel Barber.

Mr. Sivik composed nine symphonies, ballets, piano and violin and cello concertos, operas and works for chorus and bands. His works have been performed in the United States and Europe and have been recognized by the New York State Council on the Arts.

He composed a requiem Mass in honor of Felicia Petrosino and an opera on the life of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha.

Mr. Sivik was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carmella Petrosino Sivik, whom he married Oct. 22, 1983; his mother, Jessie Sivik of Amsterdam; a brother, Roland Sivik of Amsterdam; and a sister, Patricia Patrick of Hyannis, Mass.

Services will be held at 8:15 a.m. Thursday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., followed at 9:15 at St. Michael the Archangel Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to St. Michael's Memorial Fund; The National Shrine of North American Martyrs; or the Liberty Foundation, all in care of the funeral home.

Florence Morrone Purstell, 100, lifelong local resident
MAPLEWOOD - Mrs. Florence Morrone Purstell, 100, of Third Avenue, died Sunday at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs.
Born in Maplewood, Mrs. Purstell worked for the Behr-Manning Co., now the Norton Co. in Watervliet, retiring with 23 years of service.

She was a member of the Watervliet Senior Citizens.

Mrs. Purstell was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Watervliet and a member of its Ladies Guild.

She was the widow of Frank Purstell.

Survivors include two sons, Frank Purstell of Ivy, Va., and Donald Purstell of Derry, N.H.; a daughter, Ann Marie Connors Dunn of Maplewood; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

The services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, and at 10 a.m. a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Colonie.

Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866; Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 410 23rd St., Watervliet, NY 12189; or to charity.

`Sam' Carlozzi
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Salvatore "Sam" Carlozzi, 84, of 21st Avenue, formerly of Silver Spring, Md., died Sunday at home after a long illness.
Born in Ossining, N.Y., Mr. Carlozzi was a proofreader for the U.S. Printing Office in  Washington, D.C., retiring with 35 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II.

Mr. Carlozzi attended Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Schroon Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Lidia Bernardini Carlozzi; a son, Stephen M. Carlozzi of Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister, Josephine Monroe of Livingston Manor, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Schroon Lake.

There are no calling hours.

Burial will be in Severance Cemetery, town of Schroon.

Arrangements are by the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, Clifton Park, N.Y.
