Henry "Hank" Cerrone

Businessman and sports promoter Henry "Hank" Cerrone, 93, of Route 67, Johnstown, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born on Jan. 8, 1909, in Italy, the son of Camillo and Maria DiFazio Cerrone. He came to Johnstown at age 2 and attended Johnstown schools.

He owned and operated Cerrone's Tavern from the 1940s until 1969 when he turned it over to his late son, Gary Cerrone. He was a Golden Gloves boxer and also trained many fighters including the late Tommy Baker, a middleweight national contender. He promoted professional wrestling in Fulton County. He managed and played championship baseball with the former Fulton County Glovers, a semi-pro baseball team which traveled to the national championships in Wichita, Kan. from 1955 to 1958.

He served as president of the Tryon Kennel Club for many years, a member of Johnstown Moose Lodge and a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church, Johnstown.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Dorothy Hamilton Cerrone; two daughters, Patricia Dudley of Amsterdam and Sheila Habla of Bleecker; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Gary Cerrone in 1988; three brothers, Joseph, Robert and John Cerrone; four sisters, Helen, Theresa, Betty and Marguerite.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church. The Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will take place at Mount Carmel cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Gary Cerrone Scholarship Fund, c/o Jack Callery, 23 Cady St., Johnstown, NY 12095 or the Fulton County SPCA, 486 Stevers Mills Road, Broadalbin, NY 12025.

Melany Irek Dreyer

Mrs. Melany Irek Dreyer, 93, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home in Gloversville. Her death followed a short illness.

She was born on June 19, 1908, in Hungary, the daughter of Frank and Katherine Baudoin Irek. She came from Hungary to Patterson, N.J., in 1914 and was a graduate of Elizabeth (N.J.) High School. She also was a graduate of Newark (N.J.) Junior College.

She was employed as an elementary school teacher for about nine years in the Elizabeth School District.

Mrs. Dreyer was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Gloversville and its FortNightly Group. She was also active with Mountain Valley Hospice.

Mrs. Dreyer was married July 14, 1934, to Walter Peter Dreyer. They moved to Gloversville in 1940. Mr. Dreyer died June 21, 1981.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Gloversville. The Rev. Tomi Jacobs will officiate. Interment will take place in Evergreen cemetery, Hillside, N.J. Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational United Church of Christ, 31 E. Fulton St., Gloversville; or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, NY 12078. Arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., Gloversville.

Benjamin "Benny" Siligato

Benjamin "Benny" Siligato, 87, of Whitmore Avenue, Johnstown, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, after a short illness.

He was born on Jan. 24, 1915, in Johnstown, the son of Carmelo and Francesca Consiglio Siligato. He attended Johnstown schools.

He worked as a corrections officer for the Fulton County Sheriff's Department.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and Knights of Columbus No. 239, both in Johnstown.

He married Mary Tricomi on Oct. 9, 1937.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Tricomi Siligato; a son, Carl Siligato of Amsterdam; two daughters, Marie F. Gilbert and her husband, Fred, of Johnstown and Frances Male and her husband, David, of Gloversville; a sister, Carmelia Caraco of Johnstown; four grandchildren, Paul Siligato and his wife, Michelle, Karla Siligato, Jamie Connolly and her husband, Matthew, and Mary Kathryn Swart; five great-grandchildren; and an uncle, Charles Leotta.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown. A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian burial at Immaculate Conception Church, Johnstown. The Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will take place in Mount Carmel cemetery, Johnstown, in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, St. Jude Children's Hospital or Immaculate Conception Church.

Genevieve M. Skakel

Genevieve M. Skakel, 92, formerly of Hall Avenue in Johnstown, died Friday evening at the Fulton County Regional Health Care Facility after a long illness.

Mrs. Skakel was born Oct. 15, 1909 in Amsterdam, NY, the daughter of Frank and Jenny Brindle Striker. She was educated in Amsterdam schools and was employed as a telephone operator at the former General Telephone Co. of Upstate New York in Johnstown.

She is predeceased by her husband, James Skakel.

She is survived by her son, Robert Skakel of Show Low, AZ; two granddaughters, Deborah Skakel of New York City and Susan Phillipps of Lomita, CA; and four great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Ferndale cemetery. Calling hours will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by The Barter and Donnan Funeral Home.

Arthur W. Gibbons

Mr. Arthur W. Gibbons, 100, of Golden Hill Nursing Home, Kingston, N.Y., passed away Feb. 27 at the nursing home.

He was a lifelong Gloversville resident, born on Sept. 2, 1901 in Gloversville, the son of William and Emma Rudge Gibbons. He was a graduate of Gloversville High School and received several degrees in accounting. For many years, Mr. Gibbons was manager of the Western Union Telegraph Co. in Gloversville and also was an auditor for Schine Theaters. He was last employed as comptroller for Ted Thorne Lumber Co.

Mr. Gibbons was an avid collector of stamps, books and coins. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. During the 1930s and 1940s "Art Gibbons and his Orchestra" played throughout the Northeast including West Point Military Academy. He also played with the Cyprus and Oriental Shrine Bands, Schoharie Valley Concert Band and the Gloversville/Johnstown Citizens Band. Mr. Gibbons was an amateur radio operator and a member of the Telegraphers Union. He sent press releases from the Cooperstown Hall of Fame games and Saratoga Race Track. He was a member of St. Patrick's Masonic Lodge No. 4, Sacandaga Royal Arch Masons, Cyprus Shrine, Gloversville Elks Club and the Gloversville Historical Society.

Mr. Gibbons is survived by his wife, the former Evelyn Hobbs of Kingston, N.Y.; one son, Ronald P. Gibbons and his wife Mary of Hurley, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Timothy, Ronald II, Michelle Snyder and Kimberly Lapp; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Tracy of Gloversville; and two sisters-in-law, Lillian Hobbs Lucas and Dorothy Loucks Gibbons.

A memorial service will be held at a time to be announced by Ehle Funeral Home. Cremation will take place at Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gloversville Historical Society or the Shrine Hospital in Boston, Mass.

Gladys C. Coon

Mrs. Gladys C. Coon, 93, formerly of Forest Hill Tower Apartments, died Wednesday at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility.

She was born on Nov. 3, 1908 in Vail Mills, the daughter of the late Riley and Anna Young Platt. She was educated in local schools.

She was a glove maker all her life and retired from Gates Mills in 1974.

She was a member of Fremont Street United Methodist Church and its Methodist Women; Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens Club and Johnstown 50 Plus Seniors.

She is survived by a daughter Shirley Warner and her husband Kenneth of Pittsfield, Mass.; two grandsons, Brian and Mark Warner; one great-grandson, Kyle Warner. She was married on Aug. 16, 1930 to Lester Coon, who died in 1978.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Wayne Jones, pastor of Fremont Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery.

Myrtle Rogers Kathan

Myrtle Rogers Kathan, formerly of Lake Pleasant, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Ellis Hospital following a long illness.

She was born on Aug. 22, 1913 in Oxbow Lake, N.Y., the daughter of Henry and Alida Avery Rogers. She was a graduate of Wells High School and Syracuse University.

She taught at Wells High School from 1934 to 1937; then worked at Hamilton County National Bank in Wells until December 1944 when she joined the Hamilton County Department of Social Services. She retired in 1969. She was a lifetime resident of Hamilton County.

Survivors include one sister, Almina R. Baker of Higgins Bay, N.Y.; four nephews and two nieces. Her husband John S. Kathan died in 1988. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Raymond Rogers and Leo Rogers; one sister, Rose Smith; and two nephews, Wayne and Guy Smith.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Roman Catholic, Lake Pleasant, N.Y., where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. Paul Kelly will be celebrant. Spring burial will take place in Higgins Bay cemetery. Arrangements are by Northville Funeral Home.
