Michael J. Muska

Michael J. Muska, 82, of Yost Street, Johnstown, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 27, at home.

He was born on Sept. 28, 1919 in Johnstown, the son of Thomas and Mary Billa Muska. He graduated from Johnstown High School. He served in the Army Company M 27th Infantry Division during WWII. He was held as a prisoner of war in Germany for over 100 days. He also took part in the liberation of France and was discharged Dec. 6, 1945 with the rank of captain. He received the Purple Heart in 1945.

He was foreman of the making room of the former Denkert Sporting Goods, Johnstown.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, VFW Post 510, 27th Division Association, DAV Johnstown.

He married Evelyn Jurica on Aug. 29, 1945.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Jurica Muska, Johnstown; two daughters, Lynn Mylott and Susie Joyce, both of Johnstown; one sister, Mary Bakyta of Johnstown; three grandsons, Jason Mylott, Jeff Mylott and Gregory Joyce; one granddaughter, Michelle Joyce. He was predeceased by one brother, Thomas Muska and sister, Sophie Malik.

Calling hours will be private. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, Johnstown. The Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will take place at St. Anthony's cemetery, Johnstown in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to WWII Veterans Memorial, c/o finance commissioner at City Hall, Frontage Road, Gloversville, NY 12078. Arrangements are by Barter & Donnan Funeral Home.

Philip A. Wittman

Mr. Philip A. Wittmann, 58, of Lufkin, Texas, died Feb. 17 at Nacogdoches Medical Center, Nacogdoches, Texas, after a short illness.

He was born on May 22, 1943 in Albany, the son of Anton and Marcella Sparks Wittmann. Mr. Wittmann graduated from Johnstown High School.

He was employed with the General Electric Co. in Schenectady and he began to study ministry. He retired due to disability.

Survivors include his wife, the former Marilyn Sollak, whom he married on March 3, 1979; two daughters, Sherilynn Wittmann Scheaffel Edick of Broadalbin and Mary Wittmann of Ames, Iowa; four sons, Jeffery Wittmann of Kent, Ohio and Eric, Jason and Aaron Wittmann of Lufkin, Texas; three brothers, Michael Wittmann of Lufkin, Texas, Bernard Wittmann of Johnstown and John Wittmann of New York City; two sisters, Marlene Spagnuola of Johnstown and Margie Farquhar of Brunswick, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held in the spring. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.

Caroline M. Smith

Caroline M. Smith, RN, 82, of Smith Road, town of Perth, passed away at home early Saturday morning.

Born January 12, 1920 in Schenectady, she was the daughter of Herbert and Louise Ahnert Mildern. She has lived in this area since 1974 after moving from Fayetteville. She is a graduate of Wilber H. Lynch High School class of 1938 and the Amsterdam City Hospital School of Nursing class of 1941. She also attended Columbia University.

Mrs. Smith was employed as a registered nurse for Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, retiring a number of years ago.

She was a member of the Broadalbin Presbyterian Church and a member of the SYL Class of the church.

She was a member of Art-Wel Chapter 208 Order of the Eastern Star, Perth Seniors, Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Alumni Association and a former member of the Trinity Guild. Mrs Smith enjoyed painting with the group at the Walter Elwood Museum.

Caroline was married on August 2, 1947, to William S. Smith, who passed away on December 15, 1973.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Warren and her husband, Michael, of Hornell; her son, Wayne Smith and his wife, Pamela Sweeny, of San Rafael, Calif.; three sisters, Frances Nassel of Amsterdam, Ruth Armitage of Galway and Janet Gray of Durham, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Randolph Warren, Rachel Greelish, Richard Warren, Robert Warren, Elizabeth Lowgren, Alexander Woodie and Jessica Smith; four great-grandchildren, Phillip Warren, Samantha Warren, Delaney Greelish and Samuel Warren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by three brothers, Alford, Herbert and Richard Mildern.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Belinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Paul Moyer officiating. Burial will take place in Perth cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the William S. Smith Scholarship Fund, Attn: Anne Richards, c/o Johnston School at Cornell University, 110 Sage Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853; Mountain Valley Hospice; or the Presbyterian Church of Broadalbin.

Amanda M. Lawton Travis

Mrs. Amanda M. Lawton Travis, age 89, of County Highway 101, Gloversville, died early Saturday morning surrounded by her family at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

She was born February 20, 1913, in the town of Mayfield, the daughter of John and Lillian Burgess Lawton. She resided in Northville most of her life, in Mayfield for several years and with her daughter for the past year. She was employed as a glove maker by the former Serviss Glove Company of Northville and also operated a glove manufacturing business from her home for several years.

Mrs. Travis was a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church in Gloversville and the Trail Blazers Square Dancers.

She was married in 1941 to Ralph Travis, who died in 1982.

She is survived by her daughter, Harriet J. Heimer and her husband, John L. Heimer Jr., of Gloversville; her two sisters, Irene Lawton and Zennia Mason of Gloversville; her three grandchildren, John L. Heimer III and his wife, Connie Heimer, SuAnn J. Murray and MaryLou Hoag and her husband, Jeffrey Hoag; her six great-grandchildren, John L. Heimer IV, Stacie Heimer, Katie Heimer, Chad Murray, Jason Hoag and Christopher Hoag; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Williard Lawton, Gordon Lawton and Alpheais Lawton.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Dr. Alan C. Rhodes officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Prospect Hill cemetery, Northville. Acting as bearers will be John L. Heimer III, John L. Heimer IV, Jeffrey Hoag, Jason Hoag, Christopher Hoag, Chad Murray and Klymkow. Memorial contributions may be made to North Main Street United Methodist Church, 316 N. Main St. Gloversville, NY 12078.

Jane E. Crosier

Jane E. Crosier, 76, a longtime St. Johnsville resident, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, at Little Falls Hospital.

She was born on Aug. 29, 1925, in West Hebron, N.Y., the daughter of the late Paul C. and Lillian (Clough) Crosier. Jane was a graduate of Salem-Washington Academy, class of 1941.

Her marriage to Lawrence Crosier took place on Sept. 11, 1942, in the West Hebron Parsonage. The couple shared a blessed union of marriage for 57 years until the passing of Mr. Crosier on Feb. 8, 2000.

Mrs. Crosier was last employed at the Montgomery County Office for the Aging in the outreach department. At one time, she was a seamstress for Canajoharie Manufacturing.

Jane was a member of St. John's Reformed Church and in 1988 was president of the Senior Citizen Saints.

Survivors include four sons, James Crosier and wife Alice of Fort Plain, Gerald Crosier and wife Robin of Hagaman, Timothy Crosier and wife Rose of St. Johnsville and Thomas Crosier and wife Pauline of Johnstown; two daughters, Betsy Casey and husband Michael of Rochester and Linda McConnell and husband Donald of Rochester; two sisters, Charlisa West and husband Robert of Sarasota, Fla., and Pauline Forbes and husband Donald of Bradenton, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Leonard Crosier.

Friends and relatives may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 8, at Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at St. John's Reformed Church in St. Johnsville. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Interment will take place in the spring at West St. Johnsville cemetery. All memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Reformed Church or to the St. Johnsville Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and at the church. Anna P. VanValkenburgh

Mrs. Anna P. VanValkenburgh, 83, formerly of VanValkenburgh Road, Johnstown, died Monday, March 4, at Nathan Littauer Hospital following a long illness.

She was born on Dec. 23, 1918, in Utica, the daughter of Frank and Agnes Beard Berry.

Mrs. VanValkenburgh was a member of the former Ephratah Methodist Church and the former Crossroads Unit of Home Bureau; a member of Western Fulton County Senior Citizens; and served as Johnstown town councilwoman from 1980 to 1985.

She was employed as head bookkeeper for 27 years at the former Johnstown Knitting Co. and retired in 1975.

Survivors include two sons, Harvey and his wife Kathleen VanValkenburgh of Johnstown and Russell and his wife Carolyn of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. On April 15, 1941, she married Lewis H. VanValkenburgh Sr., and he died April 30, 1979.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main St., Johnstown, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. David Almleaf will officiate. Burial will take place at Evergreen cemetery, Fonda. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
