Mary E. Doonar

Mary E. Doonar, 60, of 80 Park St., Gloversville, died Saturday, Jan. 5, at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

She was born on June 14, 1941 in Malone, N.Y., the daughter of Kenneth and Anne Lynch Doonar. They predeceased her.

She lived several years in Malone; later she and her family moved to Gloversville. She attended Gloversville schools and graduated from Gloversville High School. She attended and graduated from Nazareth College with her bachelor's degree.

Following her graduation from college she resided and worked in Rochester, N.Y. and later moved to Kinderhook, N.Y., where she taught elementary school for the Greenport School District. Later she returned to Gloversville to reside and taught at Pleasant Avenue School in Johnstown, N.Y. She was forced to retire from teaching in the early 1980s due to ill health.

She was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Gloversville.

Three cousins survive her, John (Jack) Pelkey and Clarice Champagne, both of Malone, N.Y. and the Rev. John Kennehan of Potsdam, N.Y. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two aunts, Margaret Pelkey and Mary Lynch, both of Malone, N.Y. and also one uncle, James Lynch of Plattsburgh, N.Y.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be announced and celebrated in May at St. Joseph's Church, Malone, N.Y. Spring burial will take place in St. Joseph's cemetery, Fort Covington Street Road, Malone, N.Y. Funeral arrangements are through St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home Inc., Malone, N.Y. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Nazareth College.

Clarence A. Gasner

Clarence A. Gasner, 88, formerly of Old State Road, Broadalbin, died Wednesday afternoon at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1913 in the town of Mayfield, a son of Archie and Mary Johnston Gasner, and attended schools in Munsonville. In 1927 he moved to Broadalbin and continued his education. Mr. Gasner was a lifelong area resident.

At one time, he worked on the family farm in Broadalbin. He later operated his own dairy farm in Union Mills for several years.

Mr. Gasner was a member of Broadalbin United Methodist Church.

Survivors include five brothers, Burt Gasner, John Gasner and Clayton Gasner, all of Broadalbin, James Gasner of Amsterdam and Thomas Gasner of Hagaman; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was married to the former Florence Marcus Gasner on Oct. 21, 1934. She died on Oct. 6, 1983. He was also predeceased by a brother, George Gasner.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Dr. Patricia A. Bush will officiate. Spring burial will take place in the Union Mills cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps in care of the funeral home.

Sharon Abel

Sharon Ann Maye Abel, 47, of Route 10, Caroga Lake, died Thursday evening, Nov. 15, at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, after a long illness.

She was born Aug. 12, 1954 in Amsterdam, the daughter of Ernest and Nancy Haggart Maye. She graduated from Johnstown High School in 1973.

She cooperated in the management of the Outlet Restaurant in Caroga Lake for the past five years.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by a son, Jonathan S. Abel of Johnstown; two daughters, Kerry-Anne Abel of Perth and Christy L. Abel of Lower Bank, N.J.; her mother, Nancy Maye of Johnstown; two grandsons, Callery L. Melita and Zachary M. Winnie; five brothers, Richard E. Maye of Pennsylvania, Ernest J. Maye, Thomas J. Maye and Paul W. Maye, all of Johnstown, and James C. Maye of Gloversville. She was predeceased by a brother, Larry G. Maye, and her father, Ernest Maye.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown, where a memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. The Rev. Jack Millard, pastor of Johnstown Reformed Church, will officiate. Cremation will take place at Parkview Crematory, Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the James A. Brennan Humane Society or a charity of one's choice.

Robert Ashe

Mr. Robert E. Ashe, 86, of Utica, a Little Falls native, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 15, at Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center in New Hartford.

He was last employed as manager of American Stores Co. (Acme Markets), located throughout the Mohawk Valley.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Ashe; his children, including a son, Robert M. Ashe and his wife, Karen of Wausau, Wisc., and Janet Winig and her husband, Robert, of Gloversville; five cherished grandchildren, Scott, Cory and Nicole Winig and Jennifer and Bridget Ashe; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Betty (Willy) Ashe of Utica; in-laws, Sam and Irma Talaba of Little Falls and Tina Stransky of East Herkimer. Preceding Robert in death were two sisters, Mildred Ashe and Elizabeth Simmons, and four brothers, James, John, Thomas and Willard Ashe.

A funeral service will begin at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, where prayer will be offered. A memorial Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Parish Church, corner of East Main and John streets in Little Falls. The Rev. Charles R. Celeste will officiate. Interment will take place in Holy Trinity Lutheran cemetery, Little Falls. Kindly consider memorial contributions to the Alzheimers Association; envelopes will be available at the funeral parlor for this purpose. Lucy Euliss

Mrs. Lucy Cucchiaro Euliss, 83, of Bradt Hill Road, Edinburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville.

She was born on Sept. 9, 1918 in Italy, the daughter of Salvatore and Livia Cucchiaro. She lived in Brooklyn most of her life and came to Edinburg 18 years ago. She was of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by a daughter, Pearl Carr of Edinburg; two granddaughters, Lisa Hammond of Gloversville and Kim Suarez of Florida; three grandsons, Thomas Carr of Long Island, Major Donald L. Carr of Germany and Richard Euliss of Florida; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Euliss was married on Feb. 26, 1937 to Donald Leon Euliss, who died May 26, 1977. She was also predeceased by a son, Donald Euliss, who died July 2001; and six brothers and sisters.

There will be no calling hours. A prayer service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Long Island National cemetery, Farmingdale. The Rev. Augustine Sheehan will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.

Arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville.

Adolph 'Rudy' Caprifolio

Adolph "Rudy" Caprifolio, 91, of Gloversville, N.Y., passed away January 10 at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a short illness. He was born on July 10, 1910 in New York City, the son of Adolph and Josephine Dodaro Caprifolio. He attended schools in New York City and came to Gloversville in 1952. For many years Mr. Caprifolio was a partner with R. Robert Lewis in the operation of Coronet Photography Studio, retiring in 1975.

Mr. Caprifolio was a founder of the Trinity Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps and taught marching and maneuvering for the Yellowjackets Drum and Bugle Corps. He later became assistant instructor of marching and maneuvering in 1955 for the Empire State Grenadiers Corps of Albany. He also organized the Fusiliers Senior Drum and Bugle Corps of Gloversville in 1956. In 1957 he organized the Sir William Johnson Cavalcade of Champions Competition held at Knox Field.

In 1965, Mr. Caprifolio and the late Rev. Gary A. Cooper, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, organized the Trinity Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps and later organized the Mini-Trinity Cadets as a training ground for the senior group. This group became the Patriots Drum and Bugle Corps in 1975. He was inducted into the Drum and Bugle Corps Hall of Fame of the Eastern Review Drum Corps Magazine in 1977 where he was cited for his "outstanding work with the youth of America in the field of drum and bugle corps." It was noted that "through his leadership since 1933, tens of thousands of young girls and boys have learned duty of God and Country, to be helpful to others and to be trustworthy and loyal."

Mr. Caprifolio is survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and great grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Antoinette Fiori, and brothers, Francis, Joseph and Michael Caprifolio. He was a devoted friend to Robert and Emmeren Baker and their families and the late Robert Lewis.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Ehle Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Gloversville. Interment will be in Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville.

Pearl Colvin

Pearl Colvin, 85, of Shields Road, Edinburg, died Thursday night at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, where she had been a patient since Saturday. Born July 13, 1916, in Edinburg, N.Y., she was the daughter of Samuel and Hazel Deming Tennant. She attended school at Edinburg Hill and Rock Hill. She was a lifetime resident of Edinburg and a homemaker. She was a member of the Edinburg Bible Chapel. She was also a former member of The Lady Service Club of Edinburg. Her husband William Horton Colvin died in 1978. They were married on July 22, 1935. Survivors include six sons: Lewis Colvin and James Colvin of Edinburg, William Colvin and George Colvin of Sarasota, Fla., Milford "Skip" Colvin of Colonie, N.Y. and Allen Colvin of Everrett, Wash.; eight daughters: Joyce Kelly of Phoenix, Ariz., June Scott, Ellen LaPort, Faye Frasier and Betty LaPort of Edinburg, N.Y., Christine Novack of Tampa, Fla., Della Poultney of Jacksonville, Fla. and Mary Harrington of Northville, N.Y.; two brothers: Raymond Tennant of Hadley, N.Y. and Cecil Tennant of Edinburg, N.Y. Predeceased by one son Carl Colvin, two sisters Minnie Bills and Ruth Ostrander, and three brothers Wolford, Ernest and Roy "Jr." Tennant. She is survived by a slew of grandchildren, "45," great-grandchildren, "70," plus great great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Edinburg Bible Chapel, Edinburg, N.Y. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Edinburg Bible Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements are by the Northville Funeral Service Inc.

Theodore W. Creglis Jr.

Theodore (Bear) W. Creglis Jr., age 66, of New Turnpike Road, Fort Plain, N.Y., died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville. He was born on Aug. 7, 1935 in Amsterdam, the son of Theodore W. and Eva Hovak Creglis. He was educated in the Amsterdam school system, and was a Chicago College graduate. Mr. Creglis served in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed for more than 20 years by the Contel Corp. of Johnstown, N.Y., retiring in the early 1990s.

Mr. Creglis was very active in the Meals on Wheels program and a member of the Ephratah Rod and Gun Club, the Gloversville Eagles, the American Legion Post 377 of Broadalbin, and a past officer of its 40 & 8 club. He was a member of the Broadalbin V.F.W. and a member of the Sammonsville Volunteer Fire Department.

He was predeceased by his parents. Mr. Creglis is survived by his wife, Evelyn Van Denburgh Creglis; one son, Warren and his wife Hope Creglis of Gloversville; one sister, Helen and her husband Joseph Belamarich of Chesapeake, Va.; one aunt, Hommie Witkowski of Broadalbin; several step-children, many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; two nephews, one grand-nephew, two grand-nieces and two step grand-nephews.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Extension Steele Avenue, Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at St. Joseph's cemetery, Amsterdam. Arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

Robert L. Lowenthal

Robert L. Lowenthal, 76, of Mayfield, died at home, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, after a long illness.

Bob was born June 11, 1925, in Gloversville, N.Y., son of Arthur and Vernol Lowenthal.

He was a member of the Gloversville High School Class of 1943, went into the Marine Corps in 1944 and served on the USS Vincennes during World War II, and completed his GED after his discharge.

He married Beverly Jones of Gloversville on June 29, 1946.

Bob worked for Lavores and Shaffell tanneries in the 1950s and 1960s, and then learned piano tuning and repair through a home-study course and was self-employed as a piano tuner/technician from the early 1970s to his death. He also drove a bus for Mayfield Central School from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.

Bob enjoyed music and played piano in a band in his 20s, and again during the last several years in the band "A Touch of Class." Playing the piano was an important part of his life, and he found great enjoyment in his music. He owned the Lowenthal Music Center music store from 1985 through 1989.

Bob also enjoyed hunting, fishing and carpentry, and he built his own house with help from friends and family in 1954.

Bob is survived by his wife, Beverly; children Bob and his wife Joy of Williston, Vt., Jim and his wife Kim of Gloversville, Kathy Robinson and her husband Montgomery of Bonita Springs, Fla.., John of Gloversville, Gary and his wife Kym of Monticello, Fla., and his grandchildren Ben, Andy, Abe, Joshua, Jason, Nathanael, and Holly.

A Celebration of Life services will be held at North Main Street United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, with a time of fellowship following the service at the church.

Memorial donations may be sent to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, or to Foothills Youth Services Inc., 227 W. Main St., Johnstown, NY.

Arrangements are by the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc. in Gloversville.
