John Rauch

John "Jack" Rauch, 75, of Gloversville, died Monday at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

He was born on Jan. 3, 1927 in the Bronx, N.Y., the son of Louis and Molly Stern Rauch. He was employed by Lexington Day Treatment Center of Gloversville.

He is survived by cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Moe and Samuel Rauch.

Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will directly follow. Rabbi Martin Gordon will officiate. Interment will take place at Knesseth Israel cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions to Lexington Center, 127 E. State St., Gloversville.

Dr. Harold Bryan

Harold Bryan, O.D., 78, died Thursday at Nathan Littauer Hospital. He moved to Gloversville in 1952 with his wife Joan. They were happily married for 56 years.

His daughter, Carol Freeman, lives in Middletown, N.Y. with her husband Bill. His daughter, Jill Sneider, lives in Syracuse, N.Y. He was the proud grandfather of Elliot, Howard, Tamara and Brian. He is survived by his brother, Bernard Bryan, and his sister, Selma Cohen.

After serving in the 75th Infantry Division during WWII, Dr. Bryan graduated from Columbia University School of Optometry. He was an optometrist in Gloversville for over 40 years and retired in 1993.

An active leader in the community, Dr. Bryan served as president of the Gloversville Kiwanis Club, B'nai B'rith, and the Eastern New York State Optometric Association. He also served on the board of directors of the Knesseth Israel Synagogue, the Jewish Community Center, and the Pine Brook Country Club.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Knesseth Israel Synagogue, 34 E. Fulton St., Gloversville, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Hollenbeck Funeral Home.

Dr. Richard D. Kearns

Dr. Richard D. Kearns, 83, of Broadalbin, N.Y., died suddenly Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Hilton Head Medical Center, Hilton Head, S.C.

He was born on Feb. 8, 1918 in Little Falls, N.Y., the son of John and Margaret Shanley Kearns. He was educated in Fonda schools and was a graduate of Johnstown High School. He then attended Georgetown University and transferred to Union College where he graduated in 1940. He graduated from Albany Medical College in 1944 and served his internship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City in 1945.

Dr. Kearns served two years in the Pacific Theater as a captain and orthopedic surgeon in the Army Medical Corps during WWII. He received the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He returned to Fulton County after the war, serving as resident physician at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville for six months. In 1947, he opened his private practice in Broadalbin where he practiced general medicine for 38 years until his retirement in 1985. In 1949, Gov. Thomas E. Dewey appointed Dr. Kearns a Fulton County coroner, a position he held for 15 years. He received citations for his service in that capacity from Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson and Nixon.

Dr. Kearns had been a member of the medical staffs of Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam. He was also a member of the American Medical Association, the Fulton County Medical Society, the New York State Medical Society, the Health Officers Association, and School Physicians Association. He was a former member of the Broadalbin Rotary Club, the Antlers Country Club of Amsterdam, and the Pine Brook Golf Club of Gloversville.

On April 4, 1970, he married Grace Leszczynski who survives. He is also survived by his daughters, Pamela Terlaak Poot and Ingrid Petoff of Broadalbin, Shanley Murray of Schenectady, Claudia P. Kearns of Basking Ridge, N.J., Marion Marcel Bangert of Beverly, Mass.; his son, John J. Kearns of Broadalbin; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers, John Kearns and Robert Kearns; and his sisters, Margaret Brownell, Edna Sturm and Rose Christman.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 W. Main St., Broadalbin. Interment will take place in the spring at Broadalbin Mayfield Rural cemetery, Broadalbin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin Kennyetto Fire Co. Inc., P.O. Box 295, Broadalbin, or to the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 23, Broadalbin, NY or to the charity of one's choice. A private funeral service will be held Saturday at the convenience of the family.

Melvin J. Dwyer

Mr. Melvin J. Dwyer, 82, of Esperance Road, Esperance, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, at home after a long illness.

He was born on Nov. 6, 1919 in Johnstown, the son of Francis T. and Amelia Stryker Dwyer. Mr. Dwyer attended Johnstown schools and served in the Navy from 1938 to 1940.

He was employed as a diesel mechanic at the former Coleco in Mayfield until his retirement in 1985.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Smrtic Dwyer, whom he married on Dec. 1, 1940; 10 children, John, Richard, Benjie and Joan Dwyer, all of Johnstown, Jan, Louis and Matthew Dwyer, all of Esperance, Rose Ann Dwyer, Sandra Cromling and Terri McClarren, all of Broadalbin; two brothers, Charles Dwyer of Johnstown and Paul Dwyer of Gloversville; three sisters, Genevieve Pileggi of Florida, Marion Hanson of Tribes Hill and Betty Tyrell of Gloversville; 30 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Francis T. Dwyer and Richard Dwyer; two sisters, Anna Marie Calandrelli and Mildred Russo.

There will be no funeral service or calling hours. Cremation will take place in Vale Crematory, Schenectady. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Catskill area Hospice Oneonta, NY. Arrangements are by A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.

Harold J. Maloney

Mr. Harold J. Maloney, 75, of Saratoga Road, Glenville, died Tuesday at St. Clare's Hospital, Schenectady.

He was born on Jan. 29, 1926 in Rome, N.Y., the son of the late William Schwab and Pauline Palmer. He was educated in Scotia schools and he was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He retired in 1986 after more than 30 years as a draftsman with General Electric Co., Schenectady.

He was a member of the American Legion, Schenectady and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include five daughters, Gail A. Maloney of Gloversville, Debra Sanders of Fulton, N.Y., Carol A. Maloney of Delaware, Pauline A. and Karen A. Maloney, both of Schenectady; two sons, Mark J. and Patrick J. Maloney, both of Schenectady; two sisters, Helen Briggs and Nancy Palmer, both of Glenville; one brother, William Maloney of Tennessee; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; nieces; nephews; and his companion, Evelyn Benitez of Fonda.

He was predeceased by one son, Gary A. Maloney.

There will be no calling hours. Services will be private. Cremation took place at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Contributions may be made to Girls Inc., Albany Street, Schenectady, N.Y. Arrangements are by Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville.

James Lionel Grisham

James Lionel Grisham, 85, of 8015 NW 28th Place, Apartment 208B, Gainesville, Fla., a longtime Fonda resident, died Feb. 4.

Mr. Grisham was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y. and lived in Fonda for over 75 years before he moved to Gainesville in September 2000.

He was a rural mail carrier. He served in the Army in World War II in North Africa and Italy.

He was a member of Johnstown Moose Lodge, attended Fonda Reformed Church and enjoyed bowling and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Lois H. Grisham, and a son, James S. Grisham, both of Gainesville.

Interment will take place in Evergreen cemetery, Fonda, in the spring at a date to be announced.

Marion G. Lucas

Mrs. Marion G. Lucas, 87, a former Bleecker and Vero Beach, Fla. resident, died Wednesday at Grace Barker Nursing Center, Warren, R.I.

Mrs. Lucas was born on May 12, 1914 in Poultney, Vt., daughter of the late John and Nell Stroud Griffith. She was educated in Poultney schools and the Troy Conference Academy and Green Mountain Junior College, both in Poultney, Vt. She also graduated from Converse College in Spartenburg, S.C.

She taught at Troy Conference Academy and Gloversville High School in the English department, where she also tutored needy high school students. She retired from Gloversville High School many years ago.

Mrs. Lucas was a member of the New York State Teachers Association and editor of their newspaper; she was also a member of Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Lucas was a member of City Recreation Commission, Gloversville Women's Study Club, Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary, a committee member that originated the Gloversville Senior Citizens Center, and a past president and member of American Field Service Adult Club. She hosted an AFS student, Ayse Azak, from Istanbul during the 1994-95 school year.

Mrs. Lucas was also a member of the Fremont Street United Methodist Church, where she also taught Sunday School. She was very active in church affairs, including Couples Club and Square Pegs.

She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Simonsen of Barrington, R.I.; and a son, Peter W. Lucas of St. Charles, Ill. She spent many years attending to her children during and prior to her teaching career. Other survivors include four grandchildren, Anne and Kara Simonsen and Andres and Pepe Lucas; a niece, Janice Xeller; and a nephew, Gary Williams.

Mrs. Lucas was married on June 29, 1940 to Richard A. Lucas, who died in 1993.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville, where funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. The Rev. Wayne Jones, pastor of Fremont Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at Ferndale cemetery.
