Viola Melious

Viola Melious, 80, formerly of Speculator, N.Y., died Sunday, Feb. 10, at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital ICU following a short illness with all of her children at her bedside.

Viola was born on June 25, 1921 in Delhi, N.Y., a daughter of Maude Conklin White and John Pardee.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Survivors include three sons and five daughters, Charles (Carol) Melious of Tampa, Fla., Andrew (Earlene) Melious of Tribes Hill, George (Shelley) Melious of Delhi, Donna (John) Rogers of Northville, Sharon Caporale of Frankfort, Toni (Nicholas) Auriemma of Amsterdam, Marlene (Sanford) Bradt of Wells, Helen (Earl) Birtch of Chenango Forks; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Also survived by three sisters, Mary Strickland of Binghampton, Margory Pardee of Camden, Marion (Earl) Barber of Brackney, Pa.

Mrs. Melious was predeceased by son, David Melious; sisters, Daisy Mann, Dorothy Reese, Ellen-Rosie-Elmore; brothers, Claude Pardee, Benjamin Pardee, Jack Pardee.

Memorial contributions may be made to Speculator Ambulance Service, Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Intensive Care Unit or Wilkinson's. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

J. Quentin Moore

Mr. J. Quentin Moore, 56, of Waddell Avenue, Fort Plain, died suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Little Falls Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 8, 1945 in Trenton, N.J., the son of James Moore and Hazel Smith Conroy. Mr. Moore was a graduate of the Fort Plain High School Class of 1963 and attended Hamilton College. He was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Moore was employed by the New York State Transportation Department in Utica and retired in 1996.

He was a member of Fort Plain Reformed Church, Canajoharie-Fort Plain Elks Lodge No. 2621 and Loyal Order of the Moose No. 853, Canajoharie.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jeffrey Jones of Fort Plain, N.Y.; one half-sister, Rhonda Cross of Gainesville, Fla.; one granddaughter, Quinn M. Jones of Fort Plain, N.Y.; and two nieces.

On Aug. 31, 1974 in St. Johnsville, he married Dianne Papa Moore, who died in 1980. He was also predeceased by his parents, James Moore in 1948 and Hazel Moore Conroy in 1998.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Fort Plain Reformed Church, Canal Street, Fort Plain, N.Y. The Rev. Nancy Ryan will officiate. Burial will take place at Fort Plain cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Mid County Volunteer Ambulance Service, PO Box 126, Canajoharie, NY 13317; or Amsterdam Chapter of Head Injury Association, c/o Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, NY 13339.

Robert F. Jones

Robert F. Jones, 72, died Thursday evening at Wesley Health Care Center Inc. in Saratoga Springs.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1930, in Gloversville, the son of Howard and Elsie Hunt Jones. He was a 1947 graduate of Gloversville High School and attended Union College. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1953.

Mr. Jones resided in Pittsfield, Mass., for several years, as well as in the Albany area. He was employed by the New York State Thruway Department as a collector and at the office of the state Department of Taxation and Finance. He then returned to Gloversville, where he worked as a self-employed piano turner.

He was a self-taught jazz pianist and played in a band that entertained the Air Force troops and at area shows in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Mr. Jones is survived by his sisters, Barbara Brown of Gloversville, N.Y., and Kathryn A. Jones of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; a nephew, Michael Brown of Gloversville; nieces, Kathy Cline of Johnstown, N.Y. and Kelly Shields of Malta, N.Y.; and close friend Richard Ricciardi of Gloversville.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday. The Rev. R.W. Williams will officiate. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to Gloversville Little League Inc., P.O. Box 1056, Gloversville.

Mary Ellen Boel

Mary Ellen (Bent) Boel, formerly of the Gloversville area, died Wednesday after a brief illness at Memorial Hospital.

She was the widow of the late Lawrence Boel; beloved mother of Shirley A. Bicknell of Beverly, Mass., Beverly Warner of Syracuse, Margaret Rudes of Gloversville, James Bent of Fultonville and Charles Bent of Gloversville; sister of Ruth Case of Scotia, Charles E. Heckman Jr. of Hobe Sound, Fla., Asbury Heckman of Delanson, Willis Heckman of Lucerine Mines, Pa. and Paul Heckman of McIntyre, Pa.; stepdaughter of Joseph Wojton of Cobleskill. She was also survived by 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services at 10 a.m. today at Family of God Nazarene Community Church, 361 Krumkil Road, Albany. Interment will take place in Memory Gardens cemetery, Colonie. Arrangements are by Rockefeller Funeral Home.

Robert J. De Luke

Mr. Robert J. De Luke, 78, of Sacandaga Road, Scotia, died Thursday afternoon at Ellis Hospital after a short illness.

Mr. De Luke was born and educated in Schenectady, attending Nott Terrace High School. Mr. De Luke served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. De Luke worked in the family business De Luke Realty on Clinton and State streets in Schenectady, where he was a licensed real estate broker for many years. Mr. De Luke owned Mother Ferro's Restaurant on Barrett Street for several years. Mr. De Luke was a partner with his brother in De Luke Ready Mix and De Luke Sand and Gravel in Scotia for over 25 years. Mr. De Luke was a homebuilder and contractor for over five years. Mr. De Luke worked for New York State Division of Equalization and Assessment on State Street in Albany for several years. He also operated De Luke Appraisal business in Scotia for five years before he retired.

Mr. De Luke was past Schenectady County chairman of the Conservative Party.

Mr. De Luke was a former communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Scotia, and was involved in the construction of their former school. Mr. De Luke was past president and former coach of the Beukenendaal Baseball League. In 1967, Mr. De Luke was a founder of Scotia Connie Mack Baseball League. A longtime member of Schenectady Board of Realtors.

Mr. De Luke was a founder of St. Michael's Chapel in Glenmont and a communicant of St. Pius the X Church in Hudson Falls, N.Y.

Mr. De Luke was the husband of the late Audrie Bedford De Luke whom he married on April 15, 1950 and who died Jan. 4, 1999.

Survivors include his four sons, Mark and Keith De Luke, both of Scotia; R.J. De Luke Jr. of Saratoga Springs and Matthew De Luke of Wake Forest, N.C.; three daughters, Maureen De Luke of Saratoga, Janice Lindsay of Scotia and Donna De Luke of Saratoga Springs. Also survived by 13 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at N. Rossi & Sons Funeral Home, Union at North Jay streets, Schenectady. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home and then to St. Peter's Church, Fifth and Hutton streets, Troy, where a Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at St. Anthony's cemetery, Glenville. Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial fund at St. Pius the X Church, 100 Boulevard, Hudson Falls, NY 12839.

Maria A. De Paola

Mrs. Maria A. De Paola, 92, of Gloversville, died Friday morning at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a long illness.

She was born on March 25, 1909 in Little Falls, N.Y., the daughter of Michael A. and Filomena Salina Nunno. She moved to Italy at the age of 5. In 1938 she moved to the Bronx, N.Y. and in 1960 to Queens, N.Y. before settling in Gloversville in 1975.

A housewife, Mrs. De Paola, was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church.

Survived by one daughter, Lena De Paola of Gloversville; a brother, Pasquale Nunno of Gloversville; a sister, Margherita Nunno of Gloversville; four grandchildren; nieces and a nephew. On April 21, 1931, she married Rocco De Paola, who died in 1988.

Viewing hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Amico Funeral Home, 150 S. Main St., Gloversville A prayer service will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church. Interment will take place at Mount Carmel cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the church building fund.

Carmela M. Groom

Carmela M. Groom, 75, of 112 Vrooman Road, Caroga Lake, N.Y., passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, at St. Francis Cabrini Hospital, Alexandria, La.

She was born on June 7, 1926 in Little Falls, N.Y., the daughter of the late Rocco and Angelina (Morra) Colangelo. Carmela was a graduate of Little Falls High School.

She was united in marriage to Jerry Groom on Oct. 8, 1955 in Long Beach, Calif. The couple had shared in a blessed union of 38 years until the death of Mr. Groom on Dec. 18, 1993.

In 1972, Mr. and Mrs. Groom started and owned Hawaiian Boats, Inc., which custom-built over 14,000 high performance fiberglass ski boats, until 1980 when they moved to Caroga Lake, N.Y. There they owned and operated Groom's General Store from 1980 to 1992. The store is still owned and operated by the family.

Outside of her working career, Carmela was a devoted mother and grandmother who cherished her family dearly. Being the vivacious lady she was, Carmela kept herself an active and busy person for many years. Two of her favorite hobbies were playing poker with her friends whenever she could and traveling, which she truly enjoyed.

Surviving are her beloved children, Leslie H. Groom and wife Mary Ann Reddoch-Groom of Boyce, La., Jerry L. Groom II and wife Kimberly of Caroga Lake and Kevin M. Groom and wife Catherine Kendrick of Corvallis, Ore.; her cherished grandchildren, Callista, Jerry, Cameron, Keiko, Jerry III, Patrick and Michael Groom; in-laws, Raymond J. Groom, Patricia Groom and Leslie Groom. She was predeceased in death by one sister, Yolanda Caracane.

Friends and relatives may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will take place at St. Mary's cemetery, town of Herkimer.
