Theodore Zuckerwar Sr.

Mr. Theodore Zuckerwar Sr., 75, formerly of Gloversville, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Albany Memorial Hospital. He was a resident of the Julie Blair Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Albany.

He was born on April 12, 1926 in Gloversville, the son of Julius and Cecelia Landy Zuckerwar. He served in the Navy during WW II.

He was employed as a glove cutter by Grandoe Glove Co., Gloversville for many years.

He is survived by his daughter, Marguerite Beatty of Winter Haven, Fla.; son, Theodore "Teddy" Zuckerwar Jr. of Gloversville, N.Y.; brother, Robert Zuckerwar of Gloversville, N.Y.; four grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Zuckerwar was married on July 9, 1949 to Eleanor Borst, who died on Nov. 24, 1993. He was also predeceased by brothers, Paul Zuckerwar, Milton Zuckerwar and Donald Zuckerwar.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Bruce Hoose will officiate. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville.

Myra Meade

Myra Meade, 56, of Luther Highway and formerly of Amsterdam, died Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam following a long illness.

She was born on Oct. 17, 1945 in Gloversville, N.Y., the daughter of James A. and Edith (Person) Gardiner.

Myra grew up in Northville and was a graduate of Northville High School. She then resided in Gloversville for several years, then Amsterdam and most recently moved to Saratoga Springs.

Until her illness, she was employed as a sewing machine operator at Breton Industries in Amsterdam.

She enjoyed doing crafts, sewing and crossword puzzles.

Survivors besides her husband Robert include three sons, William H. Meade of Ballston Spa, James A. Meade of Saratoga Springs and Robert A. Meade of Cohoes; a daughter, Kelly M. Collins of Saratoga Springs; three brothers, John and Arthur Harrington, both of Little Falls, and Charles Gardiner of Gainesville, Fla.; a sister, Shirley Cook of Troy; nine grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours or services. Burial will take place in the spring at the family plot at Edinburg cemetery, town of Edinburg. Arrangements are by Tunison Funeral Home, 105 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs.

Albert Pellegrino

Albert Pellegrino, 88, of Gloversville, died Tuesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1913 in Fonda, N.Y., the son of Marcus Pellegrino and Balbina Compagnana. Mr. Pellegrino graduated from Gloversville High School in 1932 and resided in the Gloversville area most of his life.

He was employed by several leather companies in the Fulton County area and retired from the former Pan American Leather Co. of Gloversville.

He was a lifetime member of the local Amalgamated Textile Workers Union AFL-CIO where he held several offices including shop steward. He coached Little League baseball and enjoyed a variety of sports. He was an outstanding high school quarterback and an amateur boxer. He also enjoyed playing cribbage.

He is survived by his son, Marc Pellegrino of Albany, his son, David and wife Julia of Woodstock, Vt., his son, Stephen and wife Melissa of Gloversville, his son, Karl and wife, Amy of Chalfont, Pa.; his daughter, Lucinda and her husband, Robert Olmstead of Troy, his daughter, Sharron and her husband, Jon Thompson of Gloversville; his sister, Lee M. Pellegrino of Gloversville; several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by is grandchildren, Sophia, Christopher, Zachary and Jared Pellegrino, Kim Woloszyn, Kelly Masline, Sean, Shane and Joshua Thompson, Adam Esposito, Chantal Schermerhorn, Gabrielle Gable, Nicholas and Quinton Spaulding.

He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Lois B. Harding-Pellegrino; his half brothers, John and Guy Gisondi; his brothers, Dominic and James Pellegrino; and his sister, Marie Campbell.

There will be no prior visitation from the funeral home. A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from the North Main Street United Methodist Church chapel. The Rev. Dr. Alan Rhodes will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

Edna VanAvery

Mrs. Edna VanAvery, 74, of Murray Hill Road, St. Johnsville, died Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a brief illness.

She was born on Nov. 15, 1927 in Connecticut, the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Wheeler Roca.

Mrs. VanAvery was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses, Johnstown.

She was employed with Beech-Nut in Canajoharie and later worked for the former Continental Mills in Gloversville.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn Ackernecht of St. Johnsville and Judith Greenslete of Lassellsville; one son, Nelson VanAvery Jr. of St. Johnsville; two sisters, Agnes Marotta of Amsterdam and Ruth Ann Rumley of Galway; two brothers, Joseph Roca of Amsterdam and Manuel Roca of Washington; three grandchildren, Scott Ackernecht, Alissa Greenslete and Michael Greenslete; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. VanAvery was predeceased by her husband, Nelson VanAvery, whom she married on Sept. 27, 1953 and who died on Dec. 8, 1992.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. today at A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown, where funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Spring burial will take place at Fical cemetery, Lassellsville.

Derah E. Warrick

Derah E. Warrick, infant daughter of Shawn and Katrina Warrick, died Monday, Jan. 28, at Albany Medical Center.

She was born on Dec. 18, 2001 at St. Clare's Hospital.

Derah is the sister of Cassandra and Ashley Warrick. She is the granddaughter of Paul and Deborah Dietrich of Amsterdam, Theresa Steele of Scotia and Marty Warrick of Clifton Park; great-granddaughter of Wanda and Leonard Wells of Johnstown; James Fake of Rotterdam, Francis and Doris Warrick of Clifton Park.

Calling hours will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at New Cromer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Route 155 south of Central Avenue). A Mass of the Angels will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul the Apostle Church, Schenectady. Interment will take place at St. Joseph's cemetery, Schenectady.

John W. Blackwood Jr.

Mr. John W. Blackwood Jr., 70, of Glen Drive, Fultonville, died Thursday morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam..

He was born on Oct. 2, 1931 in the town of Glen, the son of John W. and Lillian Oare Blackwood Sr. He was a 1948 graduate of Johnstown High School and was a graduate of SUNY at Oswego at the Regional Center in Albany with a permanent certification to teach vocational education at the secondary level.

He as an Army Korean War veteran and received two bronze service stars.

Mr. Blackwood was employed as a teacher for the Hamilton, Fulton and Montgomery Board of Cooperative Education Services in Johnstown for a number of years. He most recently worked as a driver for Capitol Vial Inc. in Fultonville and was also a part-time salesperson for the Wilde Fire Equipment Co. in Mayfield.

He was a crew chief for 1966 NASCAR Modified National Champion Ernie Gahan and throughout the 1960s and was awarded the Mechanic of the Year Award at the annual awards ceremonies held at the Daytona Beach banquet for NASCAR. Mr. Blackwood was the official starter at Fonda Speedway and Albany-Saratoga Speedway in the 1970s. He worked on Randy Snyder's Driver Independent Race Tracks (DIRT) modified stock car and worked as a mechanic for the Busch Grand National North Series for three years in the early 1990s.

He was a member of the National Association of Welding Instructors; regional judge for the welding competition for VICA, NESCOT; a former member for 24 years and past fire chief for 10 years of the Aetna Engine Co. in Fultonville; and a former member of the Johnstown Moose lodge. He was of the Methodist faith.

He was married on April 16, 1966 to the former Susan M. Slovick.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Raymond Blackwood Sr. of Fultonville; two daughters, Cheryl Blackwood of Deering, N.H., and Amy Seidel of Galway; his mother, Lillian Oare Blackwood of Johnstown; two sisters, Janice Walsh of Johnstown and Patricia Cosselman of Caroga Lake; three grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, John W. Blackwood III, who died in 1974.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, where funeral services will follow at noon. The Rev. Jack Millard will officiate. Burial will take place in Maple Avenue cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Aetna Engine Co., P.O. Box 312, Fultonville, NY 12072, or NESCOT c/o Lee Palmer, 1183 Acquatuck Road, Ravena, NY 12143.

Victor Vincent Evangelista

Victor Vincent Evangelista of Gloversville passed away Feb. 19 at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin, Vt.

He was born on April 5, 1911 in Gloversville, the son of Alfred and Concetta (Jennie) Papa Evangelista. He attended Gloversville schools and worked for the local fish hatchery and then the glove industry until his retirement. In his youth, he participated in all sports, especially baseball. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid bowler.

His memberships included the American Legion, VFW and Elks Club, all of Gloversville.

Victor served in combat in the Italian Theater of Operations during World War II and was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.

Victor is survived by a son, Noel and his wife, Sandi, of Williamstown, Vt.; a grandson, Peter of South Kent, Conn.; a granddaughter, Kimberly Malumphy and her husband, Jim, and a great-granddaughter, Molly of New Milford, Conn.; a sister, Gloria Wendell and her husband, Frank, of Fonda; and two brothers, Achilles of St. Helena, Calif., and Hugo and his wife, Laura, of Gloversville.

His wife Irene (Putnam) predeceased him on Sept. 4, 1982. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Erma Conway and Olga Gardella.

There will be no calling hours. Services will take place at Ferndale cemetery in Johnstown in the spring. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Patient Activity Fund, c/o Woodridge Nursing Home, PO Box 550, Barre, VT 05641. Services are under the direction of the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, Vt.
