Diane VanEvera

Diane Phillips VanEvera, R.N., 63, of County Highway 107, Amsterdam, passed away Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital.

She was born on March 9, 1938 in Amsterdam, a daughter of Jay and Dorothy Phillips Brown. She was a lifelong area resident and attended area schools. She was a graduate of Perth Central School in 1955. She attended Ellis Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated as an R.N. in 1958.

She was employed as a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital for a number of years.

She was a member of Broadalbin Presbyterian Church. She and her husband, Franklin, enjoyed traveling around the world and deep sea fishing.

She married Franklin VanEvera on Oct. 18, 1958.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Mark VanEvera of Amsterdam; a daughter, Amy VanEvera of Amsterdam; a brother, James Phillips of Amsterdam; four grandchildren, Sara Brojakowski, Brandon Brojakowski, Taryn VanEvera and Rachel VanEvera.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 40 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY 12010. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Edward A. Collins

Edward A. Collins, 89, of Riviera Beach, Fla., passed away Feb. 18. He lived in Riviera Beach since 1980, coming from Mechanicville, N.Y.

Mr. Collins was a highway superintendent for D.A. Collins Construction before his retirement in 1974.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of Riviera Beach, Fla.; sons, Gary (Terry) Collins of Colonie, N.Y. and Martin (Sue) Collins of Wells, N.Y.; brothers, Don, Bill and Lewis Collins, all of New York; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, at Thomas L. Price Funeral Home. An interment service will be held at a later date in New York. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Ave., West Palm Beach, FL 33407.

Andrew P. Crispin

Andrew P. Crispin, 89, of Union Mills Road, died Friday morning , Feb. 22 at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Berwick, Pa. on Nov. 25, 1912, a son of Andrew and Helen Czap Polowchak. Mr. Crispin lived in Binghamton, N.Y. for a time before moving to Broadalbin in 1948.

Mr. Crispin was employed as a supervisor and rubber chemist at Collette Manufacturing in Amsterdam. He retired in 1977.

He was predeceased by a son, Gerald Crispin, who died in 1982.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, the former Irene Stroka Crispin; a son, Lee Crispin of Broadalbin; a brother, Michael Polowchak, and a sister, Mary Evans, both of Berwick, Pa., six grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services. Cremation was performed at the Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady. Final burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin.

Ethel C. McQuade

Ethel C. McQuade, 95, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 22, at Bayfront Medical Center, St. Petersburg.

She was born in Charleston, N.Y. She came to St. Petersburg in 1984 from Gloversville, N.Y.

Survivors include a daughter, Marlene Chichester of St. Petersburg; a sister, Beulah Perreault of Riverview, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Carlene Dorman of Mayfield, N.Y., Donald Chichester of Fonda, N.Y., Carl Chichester III of Broadalbin, N.Y., Cathy Simonds of Gloversville, Laurie Jo Fallis of Johnstown, N.Y., Paul Chichester of upstate New York and Kevin Chichester of St. Petersburg; 12 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Red Cross, Tampa Bay Chapter, 818 Fourth St. north, St. Petersburg, FL 33701. Arrangements are by Anderson-McQueen Funeral Homes & Cremation Tribute Center-Ninth Street Chapel, 2201 Ninth St. north, St. Petersburg. Online guest book at www.andersonmcqueen.com.

Arthur Ploss

Mr. Arthur "John" Ploss, 88, of Haskell Road, Piseco, N.Y., died Thursday, Feb. 21, at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

He was born in Corry, Pa., the son of Henry and Hazel Munn Ploss. He had been a resident of Piseco since 1948.

He was employed as a caretaker for Knox Gelatine.

Mr. Ploss was a member of the Piseco Fire Department; Piseco Fish and Game Club; Piseco Snowmobile Club, and Adirondack Federation. He was also a justice of the peace serving for two terms.

Survivors include his wife, Ila Baker Ploss of Piseco, N.Y.; two stepsons, John Simons of Piseco, N.Y. and Charles Simons of Maine; three stepdaughters, Emily King of Caroga Lake, N.Y., Ida Paone of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and Donna Simons of Syracuse, N.Y.; one stepbrother, Carson Munn of Corry, Pa.; one stepsister, Rosemarie Amorosa of Corry, Pa.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St., where a memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. The Rev. Tom Blowers will officiate. Burial will take place at Higgins Bay cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Piseco Fire Department and Ambulance Fund.

Abraham E. Tanner

Abraham E. Tanner, 51, of State Highway 29, Gloversville, died at home Friday morning following a brief illness.

He was born in Gloversville on Sept., 23 1950, a son of Erskine and Jennie Wilson Tanner and attended school in Mayfield. Mr. Tanner was a lifelong area resident.

He was a self-employed contractor in the area and operated A.R. Tanner & Sons, which he started more than 10 years ago.

Mr. Tanner was an enthusiastic hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman. He was also involved in community service throughout the area.

He was predeceased by his father, Erskine Tanner, who died in 1985, and a sister, Diane Hogan, who died in 1987.

Survivors include his wife, the former Brenda F. McFarland Tanner, whom he married on April 29, 1988; two sons, Rodney N. Tanner and Jonathan A. Tanner, both of Gloversville; his mother, Jennie Tanner of Broadalbin; five sisters, Joyce Abare of Baltic, Conn., Beatrice Erb and Bonnie Barkevich, both of Gloversville, Darlene Basore of Austin, Texas, and Bridgette Danise of Broadalbin, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cremation will take place at the Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin, with the Rev. R.W. Williams, chaplain of Mountain Valley Hospice, officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call the funeral home, on Sunday, from 2-4 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Joseph A. Schriner

Mr. Joseph A. Schriner, 96, of Kingsboro Avenue, Gloversville, died Thursday afternoon at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 10, 1905 in Little Falls, the son of Casper and Anna Kaiser Schriner. He graduated from Johnstown High School and attended the former Gloversville Business School.

He was first employed as a bookkeeper at the former Burr Lumber Co., where he worked for 21 years. He then moved to Utica and worked for the General Millwork Co. for about a year. He returned to Gloversville and in April of 1945 he and partner Earl House started Kingsboro Lumber Co. He successfully ran that company for 27 years until his retirement in April of 1972.

Mr. Schriner's contributions to the Fulton County area are immeasurable. He served on the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce, was a director for 10 years of the Gloversville Federal Savings and Loan Association, was president of the Sir William Johnson Motor Court, a member of the Fulton County Historical Society, Johnstown Historical Society, and Gloversville YMCA Century Club. His civic involvement continued with the Gloversville-Johnstown Joint Sewer Board and the Gloversville Urban Renewal variance committee. He was a lifelong member of the Gloversville Kiwanis Club, where he served as secretary from 1940 to 1947. He was chairman of its International Affairs Committee and also reached the milestone of over 25 years of perfect attendance. He was an active member of the former Kingsborough Presbyterian Church, serving on various committees until it closed.

On Sept. 15, 1928 Mr. Schriner was married to the former Dorothy Howarth of Utica. The Schriners enjoyed spending their winter months in the Lantana area of Florida from the 1960s until this past year. Mrs. Schriner died on Sept. 26, 2001.

Mr. Schriner is survived by his brother John Schriner of Fort Pierce, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Casper Schriner.

There will be no calling hours or services. Private interment will take place Tuesday at Forest Hills cemetery, Utica. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., Gloversville.

Evelyn B. Hilbring

Evelyn B. Hilbring, 69, of Gloversville, died Sunday morning at her home.

She was born on June 23, 1932 in Syracuse, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Emma J. Loveless Heron. She was a graduate of the Baldwinsville Academy Central School Class of 1950. She graduated from the State College for Teachers at SUNY Albany and received a bachelor's degree and later a master's degree in teaching.

She moved to Gloversville in 1957 where she had resided since. Mrs. Hilbring taught high school English for 17 years in the Fort Plain school system. She later taught for several years at FMCC and retired in June 1989 after 24 years of teaching.

Survivors include one son, Christopher D. Hilbring of Fonda, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony J. Hilbring, whom she married on Aug. 27, 1955, and who died on June 11, 1989. She was also predeceased by one daughter, Kimberly Hilbring, who died on May 29, 1958; one son, Anthony S. Hilbring, who died on Dec. 13, 1983; and a sister, Katherine Heron.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville. The Rev. R.W. Williams, will officiate. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice or Gloversville Free Library.
