John Polk Moore

Mr. John Polk Moore, 83, of South Hollywood Avenue, Gloversville, N.Y., and Victory Drive, Harwichport, Mass., died Friday, Feb. 22, at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown.

Mr. Moore was born on Oct. 24, 1918 in Nashville, Tenn., the son of Dr. John and Mary Polk Moore. He graduated from Gloversville High School and from St. Michael's University, Toronto, Canada. He served in the Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946.

He later was employed as a metallurgist engineer for 32 years in the turbine generator department of General Electric Co., Schenectady.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Gloversville and GE Quarter Century Club. He was a Fulton County Meals on Wheels volunteer and was an avid home photographer and book reader. He and his wife enjoyed to travel and spent much time at their residence in Harwichport, Cape Cod.

He was married to the former Helen M. Skarupa on June 18, 1949, who survives as well as his sons, John M. Moore of Olympia, Wash., Robert P. Moore of New York, N.Y. and William P. Moore of Harwichport, Mass.; daughters, Betsy Moore Galinsky of Johnstown, Susan Moore Rolie of Playa Del Rey, Calif. and Mary H. Moore of Gloversville; sister, Margaret Hartman of Williamsburg, Va.; grandsons, Brandon J. Hall, Jeffrey M. Moore and Jonathan Galinsky; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church, Kingsboro Avenue, Gloversville. The Rev. David L. Tressic will be celebrant. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to Gloversville Free Library, 58 E. Fulton St., Gloversville, NY 12078. Arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., Gloversville.

Mary Jane Martin

Mary Jane (Eldert) Martin, 61, of Palma Avenue, Rotterdam, died Wednesday at St. Clare's Hospital.

She was born in Schenectady. She was a graduate of Draper High School and the Ellis Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Martin was a registered nurse, serving many hospitals and nursing homes throughout the United States. She retired from St. Clare's Hospital Emergency Department after 10 years of service.

She was a member of Trinity Reformed Church and the Professional Nurse Services Association.

Survivors include her husband of 17 years, John D. Martin; three sons, Kevin Moran, Eric Moran and his wife Karen, all of Rotterdam, and Jesse Moran and his wife Casey of Salt Lake City, Utah; and five grandchildren, Julianne, Troy, Spencer, Jaycee and Stokely.

She was predeceased by a sister, Lois Eldert.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Interment will take place at Schenectady Memorial Park.

Mary Mascardi

Mrs. Mary Mascardi, 85, formerly of Newman Street, Gloversville, died Wednesday at the Fulton County Residential Health Facility.

She was born on April 16, 1916, the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Genevieve Argento Nicosia. She was educated in Gloversville schools.

She was a glove maker all her life and retired from the former J.C. Bachner Glove Co. in 1978.

She was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens, and a former member of the Foresters Lodge. She was active in bowling and a member of a local knitting club.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Mascardi, whom she married on May 20, 1939; a son, Vincent Mascardi Sr. and a daughter, Julie Hackel, all of Gloversville; four sisters, Madeline Mienecke of Tucson, Ariz., Josephine Pecorino and Frances Carr, both of Gloversville, and Suzanne Buanno of Enfield, Conn.; five brothers, Salvatore Nicosia of Northville, Anthony Nicosia of Melbourne, Fla., John Nicosia of Riceville, N.Y., Paul Nicosia of Nesconset, N.Y. and Vincenzo Nicosia of Amsterdam; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; 41 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Cuicefessa Nicosia; and three brothers, Carmen, Joseph and Peter Nicosia.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Donald Czelusniak, pastor of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, will officiate. Burial will take place at Mount Carmel cemetery in the spring. Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne road, Loudonville, NY 12211, or American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.

William Ashley Walrath

William Ashley (Bill) Walrath, former Gloversville resident, passed away Dec. 9 in Upland, Calif.

He was born on June 17, 1922 in Gloversville, to Wm. D. and Mariam Ashley Walrath.

He leaves a wife, Hilda of Alta Loma, Calif.; daughter, Sharon Pitman of Hesperia, Calif.; sons, Gary A. Walrath of Upland, Calif. and Wm. Michael Walrath of Idaho Falls, Idaho; brothers, John (Jack) Walrath of Gloversville and James E. Walrath of La Puente, Calif.; sister, Blanche O'Donnell of Gloversville; grandchildren Wm. R. Walrath and Christopher Westfall, both of Tucson, Ariz.; Michael Broadhurst of Alta Loma, Calif.; Matthew and Nicholas Walrath of Upland, Calif.; Brian Lea and Jennifer Davis of Hesperia, Calif.; and Tammy Norris of Arlington, Wash. He leaves five great-grandchildren.

Bill served from 1942-1945 with the U.S. Army Ground Forces in the Asian Pacific Theater as artilleryman; became a bandsman in military band and orchestra. The orchestra was honored by being selected to accompany a USO tour featuring Bob Hope as they entertained the troops from a ship as it passed through the Panama Canal.

He was employed by G. Levor & Co. prior to moving La Puente, Calif. in 1956. He became a member of La Puente First Methodist Church. About 1960 he served two terms as president of Fairgrove Little League. In 1988 he retired as estimator for General Dynamics-Pomona Division and became a licensed realtor.

For his birthday in 1963 he received a registered half-Arabian mare who became the foundation for a line of prize-winning show horses. As a result he became one of the founders of the So. California Half-Arabian Assn, serving as charter president.

James Dillon

James Gordon "Flash" Dillon, 82, of 23 Bridge St. in St. Johnsville, passed away on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, N.Y.

He was born June 14, 1919, in Syracuse, the son of the late Robert W. and Elizabeth (Knapp) Dillon. Flash was a graduate of Syracuse High School and lived most of his life in the St. Johnsville area.

He was first married to Mary Katherine Hambrecht, who preceded him in death. He was later married to Ruth Gray on Aug. 18, 1952. Mrs. Dillon passed away on Dec. 29, 1996.

Mr. Dillon was a World War II Army veteran. He enlisted on March 10, 1943, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 26, 1945, with the rank of private first class.

For 40 years, Flash was employed at Beech-Nut in Canajoharie.

Mr. Dillon was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include his son James P. Dillon and soulmate Linda Horsley of Marblehead, Mass.; two grandchildren, Kristen Marie Dillon of Marblehead, Mass., and James P. Dillon Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Smith-Woody & Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, with Sister Dolores Stevens of St. Patrick's Church officiating. Interment will take place at Ephratah Rural cemetery at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Wednesday. All memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Mildred M. Barker Stewart

Mrs. Mildred M. Barker Stewart, 88, died Thursday, Oct. 4, at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown. She had resided there for the past three years.

She was born on Jan. 2, 1913 in Gloversville, the daughter of John and Grace Wilmarth Barker. She was a graduate of Gloversville High School and the former Gloversville Business School.

Mrs. Stewart was employed at the former Franklin Morrell Glove Co. and later for 18 years as an aide at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

She was a member of Kingsborough Presbyterian Associate Reformed Synod, and Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens Club.

She is survived by her son, David J. Stewart of Johnstown; a daughter, Vida S. Kane of Canada Lake; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew. She was married in 1931 to David Henry Stewart, who died on Dec. 6, 1937. She was also predeceased by her brother, Leroy Baker; sister, Marjorie Van Dusen and granddaughter, Linda Stewart.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. R.W. Williams will officiate. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Jemal Legesse DeSantis

Jemal Legesse De Santis died Sept. 11, in New York, N.Y.

He was born on Dec. 30, 1972 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He came to the United States at the age of 11 in 1984 and attended Gloversville schools thereafter, graduating from GHS in 1990. He studied first at Fulton-Montgomery Community College and later attended North Carolina State University, where he majored in business and graduated with a BA degree in 1998.

At the time of his death he resided in Jersey City, N.J. with his brother, Yassin Legesse Johnson, and worked in lower Manhattan at 1 World Trade Center. He was employed in securities transactions for Cantor - Fitzgerald.

He is survived by his mother, Anmarie DeSantis of Palm Beach; father and stepmother, Vincent DeSantis and Pamla Jeffers of Gloversville; brothers, Kemal Legesse DeSantis of New York City, Dorian B. Brumaghim and James C. DeSantis, both of Gloversville. He is also survived by his natural mother, Duriti Hirpo, of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; his elder brother, Mohammed Legesse of Gloversville, and several natural brothers and sisters, both of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the United States. His natural father is the late Haji Legesse Sherefa of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

A memorial service will be held at the Gloversville High School auditorium on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m. The public is invited.
