Margaret L. Sowle

Mrs. Margaret "Peg" L. Sowle, 76, died suddenly on Sunday at her winter home in Melbourne, Fla. Mrs. Sowle was also a summer resident of Canada Lake.

She was born on June 26, 1925 in Glen, N.Y., the daughter of Herbert and Lena Moyer Lathers. She was a lifelong area resident and grew up in Glen on her family farm, where she lived most of her life. After graduating from high school, Mrs. Sowle attended Hartwick College.

Peg was the owner and operator of Covenhoven Gifts, which she ran out of her home in Glen for many years. She was also at one time an antique dealer and in her later years rented cabins on her property on Canada Lake.

Mrs. Sowle spent a lot of her free time in her flower gardens; was an avid bridge player and loved her cats and dogs.

She was a member of Glen Reformed Church.

Survivors include four sons, Richard Ruby of Canada Lake, Rex Ruby of Caroga Lake, Scott Ruby of Gloversville and Michael Sowle of Glen; a daughter, Amy Sowle of Gloversville; a stepson, Chet Sowle of Florida; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

She was first married to Carl W. Ruby. Her second marriage was to John Sowle, who died on April 15, 1994.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Glen Reformed Church, Main Street, Glen. Burial will take place at Maple Avenue cemetery, Fultonville. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Mountain Valley Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Ruth M. Oathout Ward

Mrs. Ruth M. Oathout Ward, 94, a former lifelong Gloversville resident, died today, Nov. 28, at Mount Loretto Nursing Home, Amsterdam.

She was born on Feb. 17, 1907 in Gloversville, the daughter of Milford and Bertha Oare Oathout. She attended Gloversville schools.

She was employed as a glove maker at home for many years, and also as a supervisor by N.A. Taylor Co. of Gloversville for over 20 years.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Gloversville.

Mrs. Ward is survived by her daughter, Betty Tretola of Gloversville; also nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Eurben J. Ward Jr., who died on Oct. 12, 1984; also by her sons, Robert J. Ward, who died on Dec. 5, 1991, and William F. Ward, who died on April 2.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Edmund T. Freeborn III will officiate. Interment will take place at Ferndale cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Erwin Geelan

Erwin "Odie" Geelan of South Shore Road, Edinburg, died Nov. 29, at Montgomery Meadows in Amsterdam. Mr. Geelan was a lifelong Edinburg resident.

He was a World War II veteran who served in Europe. He earned the Purple Heart, was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and recently received a citation from the federal government for his service during the war.

He worked as a heavy machine operator. He owned and operated Odie Geelan Trucking for 25 years, then worked at Dermack Construction in Gloversville and Scotia Sand and Stone, retiring in 1993.

He was a lifelong member of the Northampton United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of American Legion Post 337 in Broadalbin and a founding member of the Fish House Fish and Game Club. He was an avid hunter and bowler and loved to refinish antique furniture.

Odie is survived by his wife, Beatrice Birdsall Geelan; four daughters, Brenda Simon of Ballston Spa, Janet LeBron of Amsterdam, Janice Geelan of Amsterdam and Laura Lanfear of Fort Plain; a son, Gregg Geelan of Northville; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elvira Srodoski of Scotia. He was the son of the late Erwin and Alice (Dingman) Geelan.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Northampton United Methodist Church at Fish House, where funeral services will follow at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Edinburg cemetery. Contributions may be made in memory of Odie to the Fish House Fish and Game Club, Broadalbin, N.Y. 12025, or to Northampton United Methodist Church, c/o Elizabeth Pickering, 26 S. Second Ave., Broadalbin, N.Y. 12025. Arrangements are by Light's Funeral Home, Schenectady.

Leroy Ward

Leroy R. Ward, 59, of Dwyer Lane, Gloversville, died Wednesday evening at Samuel Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany, after a long illness.

He was born Sept. 21, 1942 in Gloversville, the son of John and Myrtle Weaver Ward. He attended Gloversville schools and served in the Navy from 1960-63.

He worked as a self-employed contractor. He was also employed for several years by Cubby's Family Contracting Inc. in Gloversville.

He is survived by a daughter, Tammy Germany of Germantown, Tenn.; his mother, Myrtle Forgette of Gloversville; a grandson, Justin Pawlowski of Tennessee; a stepbrother, John Ward of Mayfield; a niece; and two nephews.

A calling hour will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 Melcher St., Johnstown, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. Jack Millard, pastor of Johnstown Reformed Church, will officiate. Burial will take place in Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Cara DeLaura

Cara Syndy DeLaura, Sept. 5, 1966-Dec. 1, 2001, died of cancer, after a long illness.

She is survived by her husband, James P. DeLaura; seven children, Kery, Andrew, Anthony, Jarred, Kyle, Amber and Tyler; her parents, Linda and Richard Davecki; and her grandfather, Albert Beeunas. She was predeceased by her grandmother, Eva Beeunas.

She touched many lives, lived her dream and came home to the place she loved. Burial was in Rural Park cemetery, Little Falls. A service was offered by Sister Patricia.

Frank K. Intelisano Sr.

Frank K. Intelisano Sr., 67, of Stevers Mill Road, died Tuesday morning at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady.

He was born Feb. 15, 1934 in New York City, a son of Frank and Josephine Averna Intelisano, and attended P.S. No. 40 there, before moving to Gloversville as a young adult. Mr. Intelisano lived in Broadalbin for the past 40 years.

He was employed as a dye-check inspector at General Electric Co. in Schenectady for 30 years, retiring in 1994. Mr. Intelisano was a member of IUE Local 301 in Schenectady.

He attended St. Joseph's Church in Broadalbin.

He is survived by his wife, the former Beverly Lake, whom he married Dec. 24, 1950; his mother, Josephine Kenwood of Shoreham; four sons, Frank K. Intelisano Jr. of Gloversville, Joseph Intelisano and Michael M. Intelisano, both of Amsterdam, and James V. Intelisano of Northville; four daughters, Sandra J. Przybylowicz of Galway, Terry A. Greco and Annette C. Intelisano, both of Broadalbin, and Pauline B. Intelisano of Ballston Spa; a brother, Michael Kenwood of Shoreham; a sister, Susan McIlwaith of Shoreham; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a loving family man who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Church, 7 North St., Broadalbin. The Rev. Timothy Mangan will be celebrant. Burial will take place in Mount Carmel cemetery, Johnstown. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.

Ruth F. Allen

Mrs. Ruth F. Allen, 89, of Swart Hill Road, Amsterdam, formerly of Cliff Street, Canajoharie, died Friday morning, Dec. 7, at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born on Sept. 17, 1912, in Palatine Bridge, the daughter of William H. and Grace C. Hopkins Fuller. Mrs. Allen was educated at the former Palatine School. She was a graduate of Canajoharie High School class of 1930. She was a lifelong resident of Canajoharie and had lived in Amsterdam since 2000.

Mrs. Allen was a homemaker and mother. She was previously employed at the New York Power & Light Co. and also the United States Postal Service in Palatine Bridge.

She was a member of Canajoharie United Methodist Church for over 70 years. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Fort Rensselaer Chapter, for 50 years. She was also a 50-year honorary member of the Monday Evening Club.

She is survived by two nieces, Judith Clancy of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Nancy Anderson of Wanatchee, Wash.; one brother, William C. Fuller of Canajoharie; four great-nieces, Lisa Schenk of Walworth, N.Y., Amy Newkirk of Webster, N.Y., Jennifer Hermsmeyer of Providence, R.I., and Kirsten Williams of Kent, Wash.; one great-nephew, Jeffery Anderson of Ithaca, N.Y.; four great-great-nieces, Chelsea Schenk and Hayley Schenk, both of Walworth, Katherine Hermsmeyer of Providence, R.I., and Libby Williams of Kent, Wash.; three great-great-nephews, Jacob Newkirk and Evan Newkirk, both of Webster, N.Y., and Nathan Hermsmeyer of Providence.

On Sept. 7, 1935, she married Dewitt R. Allen at Canajoharie United Methodist Church. He died March 3, 1990. She was also predeceased by one son, William D. Allen in 1946.

Burial will take place at Fort Plain cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, PO Box 126, Canajoharie, NY 13317. Calling hours will be private at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, where services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Dr. Robert Farmer of Canajoharie United Methodist Church, will officiate.
