Esther H. Berner

Esther H. Berner, 84, died today at St. Johnsville Nursing Home, where he had resided since April 17, 1997, after a long illness.

She was born on Aug. 31, 1917 in Gloversville, the daughter of Elmer and Mildred Forbes Hine. She graduated from Gloversville High School and Dana Hall Finishing School, Wellesley, Mass., and Mildred Elley Albany School of Business. She was a lifelong area resident.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Gloversville.

Survivors include two sons, Lauren C. Berner Jr. of Gloversville and Charles Anthony Berner of Fort Johnson, N.Y.; one sister, Carolyn Little of Manchester, Vt.; three grandchildren, Tracey Berner of Gloversville, Kristi-Anne Berner of Clifton Park and Laurie McFarland of Cambridge, Mass.; one grandchild, Corbett Godwin of Gloversville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lauren Berner Sr., vice president of Leavitt Berner Tanning Corp., Johnstown, whom she married in 1939 and who died on April 29, 1981; one son, Keith D. Berner; and one sister, Beverly Washburn.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at John W. Finocan Funeral Home Inc., 13 Prospect Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. David L. Tressic, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, will officiate. Interment will take place at Ferndale cemetery, Johnstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimers Association Northeastern New York Chapter, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206, or charity of choice.

Anna D. Kukla

Mrs. Anna D. Kukla, 95, of Green Lake, passed away Tuesday at Avante Nursing Facility in Lakeworth, Fla., where she resided for the past several months.

She was born on Feb. 5, 1906 in North Bush, the daughter of Guy and Minnie Putman Durey. She was a graduate of Gloversville High School.

Mrs. Kukla was the niece of and served for many years as secretary to her uncle, Congressman Cyrus Durey in Albany. She was also employed by the Internal Revenue Service and Fulton County Chamber of Commerce in the late 1960s.

She was a member of the North Bush United Methodist Church, Canada Lake Protective Association, Caroga Lake Historical Society, St. Monica Chapter 486 Order of Eastern Star, the Nick Stoner Golf Club, Kingsboro Golf Club and Caroga Lake Senior Citizens Club.

Mrs. Kukla is survived by a sister, Dorothy Lunden of Albany; two nephews; three great-nephews; and her family of friends of Green Lake.

On Feb. 19, 1938, Mrs. Kukla was united in marriage to Paul Kukla in Gloversville. He passed away Aug. 21, 1998.

There will be no visiting hours. Friends are invited to attend graveside services at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at North Bush cemetery, North Bush. Arrangements are by Ehle Funeral Home.

Thomas Malik Jr.

Thomas Malik Jr., 87, of Johnstown, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Wells House Nursing Home, Johnstown.

He was born on March 24, 1914 in Johnstown, the son of Thomas and Mary Malik Sr. He attended Johnstown schools and was a lifelong area resident.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was employed as a leather worker for several area leather companies, before retiring.

He is survived by three stepchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Sophie Malik; and a brother.

There will be no prior visitation or services from the funeral home. interment will take place at Ferndale cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

James M. Mc Cullough

James M. Mc Cullough, 91, of Northville Road, Northville, died Monday, Nov. 12, at Eden Park Health Care Center, East Greenbush, following a long illness.

He was born on Aug. 8, 1910 in Pennsylvania, the son of Simon M. and Eliza P. Mc Cullough.

Mr. Mc Cullough was an area contractor, building many homes in the area before retiring in 1980. He was also a barber on Main Street in Northville and worked for General Electric Co. from 1942 to 1946.

Mr. Mc Cullough was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Northville and a former elder and trustee of the church.

He is survived by two daughters, Ann B. Ardell of West Sand Lake, and Arlene Anderson of Carol Stream, Ill. He is also survived by two brothers, two sisters, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Mc Cullough married Emma Sweet on Aug. 27, 1933. She passed away Jan. 11, 1996.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Northville Funeral Services Inc., 401 Bridge St., where funeral services will be held at noon. Burial will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Northville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association.

Erna Blanke

Erna M. Blanke, 93, formerly of St. Thomas Place, Gloversville, died Wednesday at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility.

She was born on Sept. 5, 1908, in Tempelburg in Pommern, Germany, the daughter of Ernst and Anna Maletzke Dittberner. She attended schools in Germany and in 1928 moved to New York City, where she resided until she moved to Gloversville in 1967.

She operated Grafunder Variety Store in New York City for many years with her husband.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and its Daughters of Luther, AARP and the Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens Club, and a former member of the Cayadutta Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and Concordia Club, all of Gloversville.

She is survived by one stepdaughter, Kathleen (Kay) and her husband, Esley Miller of Gloversville; two step-grandchildren, Norman Miller of Stafford, Va., and D.C. Karen Miller of Atlanta, Ga.; four step-great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Stephanie, Kaylee and Ashley Miller; one step-great-great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Herman Grafunder, who died March 6, 1960. She later married John Blanke on Jan. 22, 1967, and he died Aug. 8, 1988. She was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

The family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where there will be a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Rev. Lauretta Dietrich, pastor of St. James Lutheran Church, will officiate. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church or Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens Club, both of Gloversville.

Albert 'Dick' Gugenberger

Albert (Dick) R. Gugenberger, 78, of Gloversville, died Wednesday at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady. Mr. Gugenberger was born on June 14, 1923, in Gloversville, the son of Albert and Mildred Harris Gugenberger. He attended Northville school and lived in the Gloversville area most of his life. He was a World War II veteran of the Army, having served in the Pacific Theater and received two Bronze Stars.

He was employed by Gugenberger Inc. of Gloversville in the roofing and sheet metal business, and later he was self-employed in sheet metal and heating business. He retired from Stephen Miller Contracting Co. of Mayfield due to illness.

Mr. Gugenberger was a member of North Main Street United Methodist Church and VFW Post 2077, and a former member of the Foresters and Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens Club, all of Gloversville. He was an Explorer Scout leader for many years and an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth (Betty) Graves of Gloversville, whom he married on Dec. 23, 1944. She is also survived by three sons, Richard L. Gugenberger and Robert J. Gugenberger, both of Mayfield, and Daniel R. Gugenberger of Johnstown; three daughters, Judy Lyn Elmendorf of Meco, Jill M. Bell and Jan S. Ackernecht, both of Gloversville; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and Elwin Gugenberger.

The family will be receiving friends from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will directly follow at 7 p.m. The Rev. R.W. Williams will officiate. Interment will take place at Ferndale cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the World War II Memorial Fund.

Bessie Richter

Mrs. Bessie Richter, 95, formerly of West Fulton Street, Gloversville, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility after a long illness.

She was born on Oct. 4, 1906, in Broadalbin, the daughter of Hallock and Lena Hart Fraker.

Mrs. Richter was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Johnstown.

She was employed with Fulton County Silk Mills in Gloversville until her retirement.

Survivors include two sisters, Louise Robbins of Gloversville and Isabel Wolfgram of Niantic, Conn.; one brother, George Fraker of Gloversville; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Richter was predeceased by her husband, Ervin Richter, who died in 1975; they were married on July 1, 1948.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main St., Johnstown, where funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Beulah Thompson

Mrs. Beulah Jane Brownell Thompson, 76, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility. She was a resident there for seven years.

She was born on July 4, 1925, in Northville, the daughter of Lynn and Bertha Black Brownell. She resided in Gloversville most of her life.

She was employed by Decca Record Co. and its successor, MCA Record Co., in Gloversville for many years until her retirement.

She is survived by sons Bill Thompson, Doug Thompson and Robert Thompson, all of Gloversville; daughters Deborah Raykoskie and Jean Eaton, both of Texas, Pam Greenough of Fonda, Nancy Ruck, Donna Genatiempo and Kim Sparks, all of Gloversville; brother Glen Brownell of Arizona; sisters Helen Johnson and Beatrice Brownell, both of St. Johnsville; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

On July 7, 1940, she was married to Everett C. Thompson, who died April 11, 1989. She was also predeceased by infant sons, Richard and Russel Thompson; a granddaughter, Michelle L. Ruck; a brother, Kenneth Brownell; and sister, Elizabeth Weber.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Northville. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 7 Washington Ave., Albany, NY 12205 or the charity of one's choice. A private funeral service will be held Friday at the convenience of the family. The Rev. David C. Newkirk will officiate.
