Alice Mae Balsley

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Alice Mae Balsley, 91, of 237 Ashton Place in Clifton Springs, formerly of Seneca Falls, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003 at her residence.
A memorial service was held Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at the Tyre United Methodist Church with the (retired) Rev. Esther B. Wheeler officiating.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorials may be made to the Millard Disinger Scholarship Fund of the Tyre United Methodist Church, Gravel Road, Seneca Falls, 13148.
Alice was born May 6, 1912, in Geneva. She was a registered nurse and teacher at Mynderse Academy in Seneca Falls. She was an industrial nurse from 1952 until her retirement in 1969 at Goulds Pumps. She was a member of the Tyre United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star Friendship Chapter, was a former Brownie and 4-H leader, and a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Association. She was a graduate of Genesee Hospital School of Nursing, attended Syracuse University and State University College at Cortland. She received the Lakes District Laity Award in 1996 and was the only woman in Seneca County to obtain a hunting license in 1928.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith Ann Lees of Pennsylvania and Patricia (William) Halsey of Elbridge; step-daughters, Diane Bowen White of Texas and Pamela Bowen of Geneva; stepsons, Edward (Linda) Balsley of Geneva, and Robert Balsley of Missouri; sister-in-law, Dorothy Alford of Seneca Falls; four grandchildren, Laura Lee Szpyrka of Pennsylvania, Scott Lees of Auburn, Patricia Lee Halsey of Elbridge and Wendy Halsey of Missouri; and three great-grandchildren, Allison Lee, Brittany and RJ.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Millard Disinger, A.S. Bowen and John Balsley.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Sanderson-Moore Funeral Home in Seneca Falls.

Joyce B. Reeves

PHELPS - Joyce B. Reeves, 69, of 1092 Route 96, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003 at home after a 20-year battle with breast cancer.
Friends called Sunday, Nov. 30 at the Jewell Funeral Home in Weedsport. Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 1 at the funeral home.
If desired, contributions may be made to the Finger Lakes Community Cancer Center, 6 Coulter Rd., Clifton Springs, 14432.
Joyce was born Dec. 16, 1933, the daughter of Ruth and Truman Bell. She retired from AT&T; after 30 years of service and had been an active member of the Cayuga Cutups Square Dance Club and the Wide Awake Grange of Phelps, and a long-standing member of Telephone Pioneers and the Niles and Sennett Senior Citizens.
She is survived by her friend and companion, Bert Willson of Phelps; and her children, Elaine (Lawrence) Hastings of Elbridge, Allen (Karen) Reeves of Scipio Center, Roger (Michele) Reeves of Weedsport, Darlene (Danny) Davis of Weedsport, Brian (Meg) Reeves of Montezuma, Rhonda (David) Keys of Elbridge, Richard (Missy) Reeves of Weedsport and Wendy (Robert LaFever) Reeves of Moravia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Nicholas and Sarah Reeves, Dale Bennett, Jennifer Reeves, Joshua and Joseph Davis, Harley and John LeFever, Dustin and LeAnna Rose Keys, and Timmy and Greg Reeves; one great-grandchild, J.D. Bennett; and her sister-in-law, Aleeta Bell of Moravia.
She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Lawrence E. Reeves.

Douglas L. Rook Jr.

ELMHURST - Douglas Lee Rook Jr., 51, formerly of Newark, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003 at Elmhurst Medical Center.
There were no prior calling hours. A memorial service was held Saturday, Nov. 22 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Newark, with the Rev. Herb Tietjen officiating. Burial will be in Newton cemetery in West Junius following the memorial service.

Doug was born June 27, 1952 in Clifton Springs, the son of Douglas L. and Pearl Rook. He graduated from Newark High School in 1970 and from the University of Rochester in 1975. Doug worked in confectionary manufacturing trade for 35 years, first in the family business, More Candy Co. of Rochester, and most recently with the Simply Lite Food Corp. of Commack. He had developed several formulas for sugarless candies. Doug enjoyed many hobbies including astronomy and sailing.
He will be missed by his daughters, Christina (Steven) Weaver of Rochester and Allison Rook of Erie, Pa.; his mother, Pearl N. Rook of Newark; two sisters, Pamela (John) Martin of North Carolina and Sandra (Herman) Cruz of Newark; three grandchildren, JD, Hannah and Heather; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Douglas L. Rook Sr. on Jan. 6, 1995; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Rook and Mr. and Mrs. Paul D. Newton.

Lester E. "Pete" Beal

PHELPS/NEWARK - Lester E. "Pete" Beal, 86, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 18, 2004 at his home.
Fulfilling the wishes of Mr. Beal, there were no prior calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 3 at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home Inc., 124 W. Miller St., in Newark with the Rev. Dan Benedict officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Newark cemetery.
In memory of Mr. Beal, please direct remembrance to the Vienna Gardens Activity Fund, 144 Main St., Phelps, 14532, or to St. John's Church Landscape Fund, 50 Spencer St., Lyons, 14489.
Mr. Beal was born Feb. 19, 1918, in Lyons, the son of the late Harry and Emma Miller Beal. He attended Lyons High School and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was the proprietor of Lester's Beauty Salon in Newark.
Mr. Beal was a life member of the Harmonie Lodge No. 83 F&AM; in Buffalo, was a life member of Newark Rod & Gun Club and was a 50-year member of the Carpenters Union Local No. 86 in Geneva.
He will be missed by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Candice Beal of Tennessee; sisters-in-law, David and Candice Beal of Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Henrietta Beal of Rochester and Helen Beal both of Lyons; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Chamberlain Beal on Sept. 10, 2002; a daughter, Roxanne in 1963; four brothers; and two sisters.

Lee H. Butler

CAYUGA - Lee H. Butler, 66, of 403 Clark St. Road, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at home with his family by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Friends called Friday, March 26 at the Pettigrass Funeral Home in Auburn. Private services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Finger Lakes, Corporate Drive, Auburn, 13021, or to the Aurelius Fire Department.
Lee was born in Geneva, the son of William and Patricia Twoomey Butler, and was an area resident for most of his life. An Army veteran, he was employed for more than 30 years at American Can in Geneva, retiring in 1989, and more recently at Casper Masonry.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, the former Mary Jane Cassbarro Butler of Cayuga; three sons, William (Kimberly) of Richmond, Va.; Robert (Karen) of Cayuga, and Corey of New Hampshire; a sister, Ann (Jim) Heffron of Clifton Springs; six grandchildren, Mitchell, Alex, Allison, Mason, Madison and Andy; a sister-in-law, Martha (Robert) Wilczek; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bernice M. Scharett

WATERLOO - Bernice M. Scharett, 61, of 712 Route 318, was welcomed through the gates of heaven into the arms of the Lord on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Friends called Thursday, March 25 and Friday, March 26 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Funeral services were Saturday, March 27 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Gramley officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Mrs. Scharett was born April 4, 1942, in Phelps, the daughter of Charles F. and Beatrice A. Pelton Albro. She was a member of the North Seneca Sportsmen's Club and a former 4-H leader in Seneca County. Mrs. Scharett loved taking care of animals, enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. Mrs. Scharett enjoyed working with F&K; Concessions. She bowled in the housewives league of at Finger Lakes Bowl in Seneca Falls, and was also an adoring fan of Elvis Presley.
She will be sadly missed by her loving and devoted husband, Frank A. Scharett of Waterloo; her children, Arthur (Theresa) Scharett of Geneva, Ken (Karen) Scharett of Seneca Falls, Frank Alan Scharett of Waterloo, Howard (Peggy) Scharett of Phelps, Mary Fisher of Waterloo and Danny Scharett; 10 grandchildren who were very dear to her heart; a brother, Charles (Louise) Albro of Burdett; a sister, Dorothy (George) Cook of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Clarence Scharett; her brother, Franklin Albro; and her sister, Barbara Margison.

Gary M. "Mike" Stephens

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Gary Michael "Mike" Stephens, 44, died Monday, March 22, 2004 at Clifton Springs Hospital.
There were no prior calling hours. A memorial Mass will be held Friday, April 16 at St. Michael Church, South Main Street in Newark.
Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery in Hornell at the convenience of the family.
In memory of Mike, remembrances may be made to Volunteer Advisory Council, c/o Sue Epstein, 703 E. Maple Ave., Newark 14513.
Mike was born on June 18, 1959, in Hornell, the son of Gary and Nancy Spencer Stephens. He enjoyed cars, boats, sports, watching old movies, dancing, horseback riding and skiing. Mike loved all kinds of animals.
He will be missed by his father and stepmother, Gary and Sue Stephens of Elmira; his mother, Nancy Stephens of Colorado; two brothers, Scott (Eileen) Stephens of Virginia and Christopher (Marcia) Stephens of Colorado; two sisters, Ann Elizabeth (Dr. David) Harford of Texas and Michelle Mays of Harford; many uncles, aunts, nieces and cousins; and many friends at the Finger Lakes DDSO.
He was predeceased by his mother's friend, Robert Mappus.

Marguerite Olp Smith

JUNIUS/PHELPS - Marguerite Olp Smith, 91, died Sunday, March 2, 2003 in the Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic.
Friends called Thursday, March 6 at the Coe-Genung Funeral Home in Waterloo. The memorial service was held Friday, March 7 at the Junius Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Ellen Donnan Carroll, pastor of the church, officiated. Spring interment will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Waterloo.
Memorial contributions may be made to the North Seneca Ambulance Corps or to the Waterloo Library and Historical Society.
Marguerite was born Sept. 7, 1911, in Spencerport, the daughter of Richard and Martha Seager Olp. She was a graduate of State University College at Brockport and attended various graduate schools. She taught in the Ithaca City School District and later, retired from the Waterloo Central School District after many years of teaching. She was also the historian for the town of Junius for many years.
Marguerite was a longtime member of Junius Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Seneca County Retired Teachers Association, Phi Beta Sorority, Seneca County Children's Committee and the Taylor-Brown Auxiliary.
She is survived by one son, Stephen (Nancy) Smith of Junius; two granddaughters, Mary Catherine (CJ) Britt and Margaret (Jeremy) Rossignol, both of lyons; four great-grandchildren, C.Joseph Britt, Stephen Britt, William Britt and Jack Rossignol; and a dear family friend, Marsha Calabrese Plate of Clyde.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul A. Smith, who died June 29, 1980; grandson, Paul Stuart Smith; one brother, William Olp and one sister, Eleanor Williams.

Alvin G. Karge

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Alvin G. Karge, 70, of Field Street, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003 at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua.
Friends called Sunday, March 2 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. Funeral services were Monday, March 3 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Lynn Spence officiating. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in Port Gibson cemetery.
Friends may contribute in Alvin's memory to the Geneva Dialysis Unit, c/o Geneva General Hospital or to the Clifton Springs Boy Scout Troop 59.
Alvin was born June 22, 1932, in Pennsylvania, the son of Ralph and Geraldine Karge, and had lived in the Clifton Springs area for more than 45 years. He retired from Garlock in Palmyra after 38 years of service. Alvin was active in the Clifton Springs Boy Scout Troop 59 for more than 25 years. He was an avid outdoorsman.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Anne; children, Wanda (Jay) Orlopp, Mike Karge, Steven (Jill) Karge and Scott (Sharon) Karge, all of Clifton Springs, and Janson (Nicole) Karge of Newark; 10 grandchildren; 10 brothers and sisters, living in Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

Lois F. Wing

PHELPS - Lois F. Wing, 76, of 11 Exchange St., loving wife, mother and grandmother, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 at her home after a long and courageous battle.
Friends called Friday, Feb. 28 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Funeral services were Saturday, March 1 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Clifton Springs, with the Rev. Thomas Gramley officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven cemetery in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Finger Lakes Visiting Nurse Service or Ontario-Yates Hospice at 756 Pre-emption Rd., Geneva, 14456.
Mrs. Wing was born March 5, 1926, in Stafford, the daughter of the late Merrill and Harriett Miner Weller. She retired from G.W. Lisk of Clifton Springs after 39 years of faithful service. She was also a member of the Geneva Friendship squares and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Clifton Springs.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, John Wing; daughter, Diane (Jack) Allen of Phelps; son, Donald (Cyndi) Wing of Waterloo; grandchildren, Suzanne (Michael) Schaben of Florida, Robyn (Steven) Schulz of Kentucky, Jon (Francis) Allen of Phelps, Donald Chad Wing, Mykel Wing and Steven Wing of Waterloo; sister, Helen (Paul) Smith of Batavia; brothers, Donald Weller of Batavia, Merrill (Doris) Weller of Batavia, Ken (May) Weller of Florida and Robert (Vi) Weller of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Margarite Rumsey; and grandson, Richard Allen.
