Ruby L. Mattoon

PHELPS - Ruby L. Mattoon, 67, of 12 Quarry St., died Thursday, June 10, 2004 surrounded by her family, after a long illness.
There were no prior calling hours. Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Resthaven cemetery in Phelps.
It is suggested that contributions be made to the American Lung Association.
Mrs. Mattoon was born Dec. 7, 1936, in Fouke, Ark. She was a very wonderful and gentle woman who loved her husband, children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Frederick J. Mattoon of Phelps; children, Frederick Mattoon Jr. of Farmington, Sandra (Jackie) McNeil of Ontario, Canada; Michael (Karen) Mattoon of Alden, Ruthanne Hall of Waterloo, Rachelle (Charles) Ryan of Stanley, and Krista E. (James) Howard-Vice of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren, Sommer, Jimmy, Crystal, Marisa, Caitlyne, Matthew, Darnae, Chelsi, Brandee, Nicholas, MacKenzie, and Eric; a step-grandson, Alex Vice; several nieces and nephews; and family in Texarkana.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps.

Kathleen M. Sweeney

GENEVA - Kathleen M. Sweeney, 83, formerly of Geneva, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2004 at Clifton Springs Hospital Nursing Home.
Friends called Sunday, June 13 at the McGuigan Funeral Home in Waterloo. Funeral services were Monday, June 14 at the funeral home and at 1:30 p.m. at St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the House of John, 14 Spring St., Clifton Springs 14432.
Kathleen was born April 20, 1922, in Geneva, the daughter of Patrick and Marie Gallagher Tolan. She was a registered nurse for 37 years and retired from Geneva General Hospital Nursing Home. Kathleen was a wonderful mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.
She is survived by her four sons, Patrick (Lisa) Sweeney of Princeton, N.J.; Peter (Barbara) Sweeney of Dumont, N.J.; David Sweeney of New York City and Joseph (Maria) Sweeney of Phelps; eight grandchildren, A.J., Tim, Megan, Jessica, Sarah, Shannon, Sean, and Shane; a cousin, Jack Vikery of Geneva; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, David B. Sweeney in 2001; and three sisters, Adell, Anne and Sister Mary Tolan.

Robert G. Freeland

SENECA FALLS - Robert G. Freeland, 64, of 66 Mynderse St., passed away Monday, June 21, 2004 at Geneva General Hospital.
Friends called Thursday, June 24 at the Sanderson-Moore Funeral Home Inc., in Seneca Falls. Funeral services were Friday, June 25 at the United Methodist Church of Seneca Falls, with the Rev. Marilyn Foster, pastor, officiating. Interment will be private.
Contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Seneca Falls, 2 Chapel St., Seneca Falls 13148.
Bob was born May 9, 1940, in Clifton Springs, the son of Kenneth and Carol Garlock Freeland. He had worked in the customer service department of Goulds Pumps for 42 years, retiring in 2000.
Bob and his wife, Mary, were married 36 years ago on June 22. He was a former village trustee and was mayor of Seneca Falls for 18 years, finishing his last term as mayor in 1996.
He was a very active member of the United Methodist Church of Seneca Falls, a member of the Seneca Falls Rotary, was a former Odd Fellow, and was a member with his wife in the Geneva Friendship Squares, a square dance club.
Bob enjoyed his gardening, wine making and square dancing and was a collector of antique clocks.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lawler Freeland; one daughter, Julia Freeland, at home; two sisters, Carol (Jack) Lamprey of New Hampshire and Nancy (More) Turmel of New Hampshire; one brother, Kenneth Freeland of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

Beverly J. LaPage

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Beverly J. LaPage, 63, of 11 E. Main St., passed away on Friday, May 28, 2004 at Clifton Springs Hospital.
A memorial service to celebrate her life was held Tuesday, June 1 at the Spa Apartments Chapel in Clifton Springs. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Riverview cemetery.
Friends may contribute to the Spa Apartments Activity Fund.
Beverly was born April 20, 1941, in Sodus, the daughter of Byron and Ella Young, and had lived in the Clifton Springs area most of her life. She was a graduate of the Batavia School of the Blind. She was a resident of the Spa Apartments for 19 years and enjoyed arts and crafts.
She is survived by her mother, Ella Young of Clifton Springs; two sons, Roland LaPage Jr. of Clifton Springs, and Byron LaPage of Michigan; a granddaughter, Rebecca Lynne; two brothers David Young of Honeoye and Kenneth Young of Sodus; and two sisters, Brenda Burley of Ontario and Betty Halliday of Gaylord, Mich.; and many dear friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roland Sr. in 2003.

Joyce L. Morales

GENEVA - Joyce L. Morales, 74, of Ceiba, Puerto Rico, formerly of Newark, went home to the Lord Sunday, June 20, 2004.
Funeral Services were held Wednesday, June 23 at Ceiba Funeral Home in Puerto Rico.
Those wishing may make contributions to the American Heart Association.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 45 years, Celino, their four children, Marcella (Matt) Huling of Phelps, Carol (Steven) Baroody of Shortsville, Celino (Kristine) Morales Jr. of Utica and Ana (Mark) Appell of Newark; three grandchildren, Jaimi (Victor) Bernardi, Bryan Morales and David Baroody; and one great-grandchild, Nicholas.

Ava C. Spencer

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Ava C. Spencer, 55, of Spring Run, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 20, 2004 at home with her loving family by her side.
Friends were invited to call on Wednesday, June 23 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. Funeral services were Thursday, June 24 at the funeral home with the Rev. Lynn Spence officiating.
Friends may contribute to the Clifton Springs Community Cancer Center.
Ava was born Feb. 20, 1949, in Waterloo, the daughter of Robert and Ruth Scott. She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed arts and crafts and was employed by the Big M Supermarket in Clifton Springs. Ava was the happiest spending time with her loving family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 20 years, Terry; five daughters, Michell (Mike) McAndrews of Palmyra, Annie (Kevin Bruening) Woodard of Palmyra, Christine Spencer of Florida, Ashley Spencer of Clifton Springs and Caitlin Spencer of Clifton Springs; a son, Kenneth Spencer of New Jersey; five grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Scott of Hull, Mass.
She was predeceased by her sister, Joyce.

Karl H. Wilkins Sr.

PENN YAN - Karl H. Wilkins Sr., 66, of 1506 W. Townline Road, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at home.
Calling hours were Sunday, June 27 at Weldon Funeral Home in Penn Yan. Funeral services will be private, at the family's convenience.
Karl was born Oct. 31, 1937, in Penn Yan, the son of John and Hazel Matteson Wilkins. He worked in maintenance for McDonald's in Penn Yan. He was a loving family man.
He is survived by his sons, Karl John (Donna) Wilkins of Potter, Jack H. (Debra) Wilkins of Penn Yan, Karl H. (Rhonda) Wilkins Jr. of Phelps, Gordon L. (Aneatra) Wilkins of Naples, Robert L. (Katrina) Wilkins of Concord, N.C. and Raymond M. Wilkins of Nebo, N.C.; daughters, Mrs. Lucinda (Louie) Stewart of Penn Yan, Mrs. Linda (Gene)Rhode of Dundee, Ms. Jill Scott of Burlington, Pa.; and Ms. Theresa Wilkins of Middlesex; a sister, Mrs. Mary Chase of Benton; 27 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

John E. Gardner

MANCHESTER - John E. Gardner, 57, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at this home.
Friends called Sunday, July 11 at Halsted-Patrick Funeral Home in Manchester. Funeral services were Monday, July 12 at the United Methodist Church of Manchester, State Street in Manchester.
Donations in John's memory may be made to Turner-Schrader Post 34, Lions Club or Ontario County ARC.
John was born May 13, 1947, in Rochester, the son of Thomas and Marion Jones Gardner. He graduated from Palmyra-Macedon High School in 1965. He entered the Air Force in 1966, serving in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969. He was honorably discharged in 1970. He worked at Conrail Railroad and served as Manchester Highway Superintendent. While working at Conrail, John attended State University College at Brockport obtaining his teaching degree in 1975. John taught briefly in Newark schools before spending the last 19 years teaching in the Clyde-Savannah School District as both options coordinator and a fourth- and fifth-grade teacher. John was an avid golfer and a loyal member of several organizations, including past commander of the Turner-Schrader American Legion Post 34, Lions Club, 40/8, and Manchester-Shortsville VFW.
John married Barbara Malark of Manchester and had two sons.
He is survived by his mother, Marion Doris Gardner; sons, Tod (Carrie) Gardner and Nicholas Gardner; grandchildren, Tyler and Alexis Gardner; brother, Fred Gardner; three sisters, Sharon (Kim) Griffin, Donna, and Barbara Gardener; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will be sadly missed by friends, co-workers, and his companion of 17 years and mother of his youngest son, Nick, Wendy Huntone.
He was predeceased by his father, Thomas Gardner; and his son, Stephen Malark Gardner.

Francis W. Sullivan

CANANDAIGUA/PHELPS - Francis W. Sullivan, 80, of 3370 Fallbrook Park in Canandaigua, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic.
At Mr. Sullivan's request there were no prior calling hours. Friends were invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday, July 6 in St. Francis Church in Phelps. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery. Family and friends of Mr. Sullivan were invited to a luncheon following the funeral services, at the Phelps Hotel.
Memorial contributions may be made to Phelps Historical Society, 66 Main St, Phelps, 14532.
Mr. Sullivan was born March 10, 1924, in Rochester, the son of Joseph and Mabel Peachey Sullivan. He was raised by his foster parents, Bill and Lula Keavney, and graduated from Gorham High School. He was a veteran of the Army having served during World War II, and a member of the Phelps American Legion.
Mr. Sullivan was partners in Sullivan Electric with his brother, George. They were the co-founders of Timberline-HEP, which today are known as the HEP stores. He was also a member of the National Electrical Contractors Association.
Mr. Sullivan and his wife, Joanne, have owned and operated the Phelps Hotel since 1993.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Joanne Sullivan; two daughters, Barbara Steinhelper of Rochester, and Geri (Thomas) Todd of Santa Rose, Calif.; two granddaughters, Stephanie (Mark) Meaders of Plano, Texas and Kristine (Jason) McBride of Dallas, Texas; two great-grandsons, Wade Meaders and Matthew Sullivan Meaders of Plano, Texas; three stepdaughters, Karen (John) Reniere of Nunda, Donna Figel of Phelps and Cheryl (Terry) McCann of Phelps; two stepsons, Stephen Callaway of Phelps and John Callaway of Palm Beach, Fla.; eight step-grandchildren, Jennifer Callaway of San Jose, Calif., Tiffany Figel of Phelps, Jamie Figel of Clifton, N.J., Lindsey Miller of Phelps, Melissa Miller of Nunda, Cameron Callaway of Geneva, and Lexi and Kyle McCann of Phelps; brother, George (Mary) Sullivan of Vero Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Elizabeth Krueger of Canandaigua, Dorothy Smith of Texas and Kathy (Jack) Casada of Bridgeport; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Beatrice Sullivan Howard.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps.

Jane Bennett Brown

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Jane Bennett Brown, 83, of Ashton Place, formerly of High Street in Geneva, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at the House of John in Clifton Springs.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August. 14 at the Presbyterian Church in Geneva. The Rev. W. James Gerling and the Rev. Nancy Birdsong will officiate. Burial will be in Brookside cemetery in Shortsville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the House of John, 14 Spring St., Clifton Springs 14432 or to The Presbyterian Church in Geneva.
Jane was born Dec. 11, 1920, in Rochester, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ainsworth M. Bennett of Manchester. She graduated from Manchester High School and later received degrees from Keuka College and from Hartford Seminary. She also studied at Cornell University and at the Colgate Rochester Divinity School.
She married Edgar H. "Brownie" Brown on Nov. 29, 1969. She spent most of her professional career in higher education and in parish ministry. She held teaching and administrative positions at Keuka College, where she eventually served several years as Dean of Students.
Jane was the interim pastor and assistant pastor at the North Presbyterian Church in Geneva and was pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Dundee, where she finished her career in 1983.
Jane was the moderator of the Ontario-Yates Baptist Association. She also was active in the Presbytery of Geneva, serving as its moderator in 1984. She was a minister delegate to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (United States) in 1988.
Jane served the community in several ways and was active on the boards of agencies such as the Ontario Day Care Center, the Geneva Women's Club, the Seven Lakes Girl Scout Council, where she was president from 1978 to 1981, and the Geneva Historical Society. She was a member of the Ontario County Hospice Task Force and was instrumental in the creation of the House of John. She also chaired the Geneva Human Rights Commission and had belonged to the PEO Sisterhood.
She is survived by her stepson, Theodore E. (Barbara) Brown; a step-grandson, Kenneth E. Brown; one great-granddaughter, Kendra Lynn Brown; one great-grandson, Hunter Rob Brown; and many devoted friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edgar Brown; and her step-grandson, Robin Brown.
