Lucile M. Roe

SENECA FALLS - Mrs. Lucile M. Roe, 87, formerly of 46 Troy St., died Sunday, July 11, 2004 in the Huntington Living Center.
Friends called Wednesday, July 14 at the Coe-Genung Funeral Home in Waterloo. The funeral service was Thursday, July 15 at the funeral home. The Rev. Phil Tennies, chaplain of the Huntington Living Center, officiated. Burial will be in the Riverview cemetery in Phelps.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Huntington Living Center, 369 E. Main St., Waterloo 13165; or the Alzheimer's Association, Rochester Chapter, 435 E. Henrietta Road, Rochester 14620.
Lucile was born April 14, 1917, in Clifton Springs, the daughter of John and Lucy Hildreth Schanz. She was a graduate of Clifton Springs High School.
She is survived by one son, Earl L. Roe of Seneca Falls; two daughters, Mrs. Donna Lee (Harrison M., Jr.) Smith of Stafford, Va., and Nancy Roe, and her significant other, Clifford "Skip" Brown of Waterloo; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Bedette of Clifton Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Earl L. Roe, who died July 30, 1983; two brothers, Harold Schanz and Edward Schanz; and five sisters, Edna Bloser, Helen Caudill, Doris Bird, Ethel Schanz and Ruth Maher.

Ralph C. Best

NEWARK - Ralph Cornelius Best, 88, of Church Street, died peacefully Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at home, with his family by his side.
Family and friends called Sunday, August 1 at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home in Newark. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2883 held a prayer service at 7 p.m.
The funeral service was Monday, Aug. 2 at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Louis Jasper officiating. Burial followed in East Newark cemetery with full military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse 13220.
Mr. Best was born March 9, 1916, in Northumberland, Pa., son of Cornelius and Catherine Fabin Best. He had worked at Herman Brothers and later for the Newark Developmental Center, from which he retired in 1979.
Mr. Best was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newark. He was also a member of the Civil Service Employees Association and a life member of VFW Post 2883. He deeply enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his garden.
The Army flag flew at the funeral home in honor of his service during World War II.
He will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife, Mildred Raup Best; his daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Donald Orlopp of Clifton Springs; his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lisa Best of Palmyra; five grandchildren, Christopher "Chas" Orlopp of Clyde, Michael Orlopp of Clifton Springs, Paul Orlopp of Newark, Kevin Best of Missouri and Amy Best of Newark; great-grandson, Jacob Best of Newark; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters; Delores Buchhalter and Marie Snyder; and three half-brothers, Wesley and Harry Rowe and Roy Walters.

Rocco Ceravolo

PHELPS - Rocco Ceravolo, 73, of 19 Orchard Park, died Friday, July 23, 2004 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Friends called Monday, July 26 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. The Phelps American Legion met at 7:15 p.m. Monday, July 26 at the funeral home. Funeral services were Wednesday, July 28 at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Catholic Church in Phelps. Burial, with military honors, was in St. Francis cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the Lymphoma Society of Western New York and Fingerlakes Chapter, 4053 Maple Rd., Suite 110, Amherst, 14226.
Mr. Ceravolo was born April 2, 1931, in Newark, the son of the late Joseph and Maria Murtari Ceravolo. He was a member of St. Francis Church, and was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
He was a member of the Seely B. Parish American Legion Post 457 in Phelps and retired from Tops Food Markets after more than 20 years as a meat manager.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Shirley A. Ceravolo; two daughters, Denise Ceravolo of Penfield and Diana (Robert) Poetker of Penfield; two granddaughters, Rachel and Amanda Poetker; sister, Mary (Phillip) Paliotti of Lyons; brother, Joseph (Mary) Ceravolo of East Rochester; aunt, Katherine Murtari of Lyons; sister-in-law, Patricia (Frederick) Allen of Marietta, Ga.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Santo, Frank, James and Anthony.

James A. Gruschow

LYONS - James A. Gruschow, 78, of Sohn Alloway Road, died Friday, July 23, 2004 at Clifton Springs Hospital.
Friends called Sunday, July 25 at the Boeheim-Pusateri Funeral Home in Lyons. The Lyons Elks Lodge held a service at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services were Monday, July 26 at the First Lutheran Church, Broad Street in Lyons. Burial will be in South Lyons cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 320 Lexington Ave., Rochester, 14613.
Jim was born April 23, 1926, in Lyons, the son of the late Carl and Helen Stell Gruschow. He owned and operated Phelps Supply Company in Phelps, a fertilizer plant. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Lyons Elks Lodge 869, and a member of the First Lutheran Church.
Jim as an avid hunter and fisherman and liked the outdoors. He also liked to play cards.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anna Wallace Gruschow; daughter, Lorrie (Joe) Holly of Binghamton; son, Charles of West DesMoines, Iowa; sister, Edna May (Mike) Gansz of Lyons; four grandchildren, Charles Gruschow, Kristina (Bruce) Vandersteldt, Michael (Melissa) Holly and Griffin Holly; three great-grandchildren, Amanda, Alyssa and Ashlyn; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two nephews, Bruce Facer and Thomas Wallace.

Richard "Dickie Moe" J. Norton

LYONS - Richard "Dickie Moe" J. Norton, 40, of Rice St., who is resting in peace awaiting resurrection to an earthly paradise, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital after an injury.
Friends and family attended calling hours on Sunday, July 25 at the Weeks-Keysor Funeral Home in Lyons. Funeral services were Monday, July 26 at the funeral home. Burial followed in Elmwood cemetery in Lyons. A gathering for family and friends was held afterwards.
Contributions can be made in his memory to the Lyons High School sports or music programs.
Richard was born Jan. 25, 1964, the son of Jane Johnson and Richard M. Norton Jr. He attended Lyons High School and graduated in 1982. He was active in all sports programs and the Apple Knockers Drum and Bugle Corps.
For years, he was employed at Zappia Vending in Newark, then he fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a New York State Peace Officer. After his graduation from the New York State Department of Corrections Services Training in Penn Yan in 1990, he worked as a correctional officer at Sing-Sing, Ulster, Fishkill, Bradford Hills, Butler Shock and the newly established Five-Points in Romulus.
Richard enjoyed art, woodworking and especially the company of his Labrador retrievers, which he bred under the name "Nortland" labs. He also looked forward o golfing and hunting expeditions with his many friends.
He is survived by his mother, Jane; stepfather, William Mott of Lyons; father, Richard M. (Staci) Norton of Auburn; brothers, Ronald (Angelina) Norton of Canandaigua, Stuart Mott of Geneva, Christian Mott of Lyons and Steve Augustine of Clifton Springs; one sister, JoAnna Mott of Lyons; three grandmothers, Bernice Johnson of Lyons, Winifred Mott of Clifton Springs and Polly Norton of Lyons; several uncles, aunts and cousins; one niece, Jessica; and his "adopted brother", Jeffrey Swann of Lyons.

Charles L. Rickerson

WATERLOO - Mr. Charles L. Rickerson, 69, of 19 W. William St., died Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at his home.
Friends called Thursday, July 29 at the Coe-Genung Funeral Home. Military rites were performed at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, by members of the Waterloo Memorial VFW Post 6433, and the Warner VanRiper American Legion Post 435.
The funeral service was Friday, July 30 at the funeral home. Sister Kathleen O'Connell from St. Mary's Catholic Church officiated, with Raymond Torrey, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Seneca Falls, also participating. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery in Waterloo.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic School, in care of Fred Smith, 35 Center St., Waterloo 13165.
Charles was born May 13, 1935, in Clifton Springs, son of Robert L. and Vivian M. Chalker Rickerson. He attended the Waterloo schools and was a life resident of the Finger Lakes.
He was an Army veteran, having served in Austria and Germany from 1953 to 1956. He retired in 1995 after many years of employment with Zotos International in Geneva. Charlie enjoyed going to casinos and was an avid camper.
He is survived by his wife whom he married in 1962, Shirley Rickerson; two daughters, Karleen Stahlnecker of Waterloo and Tracey (Bruce) DeMay of Webster; one son, Brian (Debbie) Rickerson of Clifton Sprigs; eight grandchildren; one sister, Barbara (Marvin Kise) Rickerson of Waterloo; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Robert E. Young

PHELPS - Robert E. Young, 88, of 144 Main St., formerly of Rochester, died Monday, July 26, 2004 at the DeMay Living Center in Newark.
Friends attended a memorial service on Friday, July 30 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Burial will be in Resthaven cemetery.
It is suggested that memorial contributions be made to Lifespan, 1900 S. Clinton Ave, Rochester, 14618.
Mr. Young was born April 11, 1916, in Canandaigua, the son of Elkanah and Ethel Travis Young. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Webster American Legion Post 942 and a life member of the Keesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1505. Mr. Young was also a War Dad.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of the World Wide Church of God. Mr. Young retired from driving bus for the Rochester Transit System after 32 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Hildegard Young; six children, Robert (Karen) Young of Germany, William (Connie) Young of Oklahoma, Carol Smith of Colorado, Conrad (Sue) Skorc of Palmyra, Herta Freling of Palmyra and Betty Hughes of Rochester; nine brothers and sisters; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother and sister.

Margaret B. Facer

PHELPS-CLIFTON SPRINGS - Mrs. Margaret B. Facer, 87, of 135 Ashton Court, formerly of Phelps, died unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004.
Friends called Thursday, Aug. 5 and Friday, Aug. 6 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 7 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1 Teft Ave. in Clifton Springs with the Rev. Thomas Gramley officiating. Burial will bein Oaklawn cemetery in Oaks Corners.
It is suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Phelps Community Library, 15 Church St., Phelps, 14532, or St. John's Episcopal Church, 1 Teft Ave., Clifton Springs, 14432.
Mrs. Facer was born May 4, 1917, in Manchester, England, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Grimshaw Brook. Mrs. Facer moved to Phelps in 1939 and married Robert Facer in 1940. She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She graduated as valedictorian of her class from Fredonia Normal School. In 1978 Mrs. Facer developed and coordinated the adult education program for the Phelps-Clifton Springs School District and she retired from that position in 2003. She was a music teacher and retired after 21 years from the Phelps-Clifton Springs School District.
Mrs. Facer was a 25-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma International. She was a very active member of Rotary International and was past president of the Phelps Rotary Club, the Phelps Historical Society and was a founding member of CAPP (Community Action Plan for Phelps). She was awarded the Phelps Business and Professional Women "Woman of the Year" in 1990. In 1994, Mrs. Facer received the Phelps Chamber of Commerce Family of the Year award and in that same year was awarded the Antoinette Granger award. In 1997 she was awarded the Dewitt Clinton award from the Phelps Masonic Lodge for such great care and dedication to her community. In 2003, Mrs. Facer was recognized by state Sen. Michael Nozzolio for being a long-time election inspector. She was an avid blood donor. She volunteered at Vienna Garden Apartments in Phelps. Mrs. Facer was very active in the Phelps Community Library and was best known for being "the story lady." In 1991 she created the storyline with the help of the local phone company. She recorded five stories a week from her home phone. Children and adults could access the stories seven days a week. The children's room at the library was re-dedicated to Mrs. Facer on May 30, 2003.
She is survived by four children, Robert (Becky) Facer Jr. of Franklin, Tenn., Elizabeth (Dan) Biery of Phelps, Ann (Peter) Odell of Phelps and David (Kathy) Facer of Minneapolis, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Stephanie (Patrick) Kelly of Clifton Springs, Scott (Carrie) Mattoon of Canandaigua, Jeremy Mattoon of Phelps, Jennifer (Shane) Fackelman of Henrietta, Jeffrey Burnisky of Atlanta, Ga., Rebecca (Eric) Edling of Coon Rapids, Minn., Joshua Facer of Coon Rapids, Minn., Robin (Andrew) Taylor of Glendale, Calif., Darin Facer of Chicago, and Kristen Facer of Fort Carson, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, who died in 1975.

Elizabeth C. Fox

PHELPS - Elizabeth C. Fox, 91, of 4 S. Wayne St., died unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004.
Friends called Tuesday, Aug. 3 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps, and on Wednesday, Aug. 4 at the United Church of Phelps. A memorial service followed at the church with the Rev. Shirley Filiatreau officiating. Burial will be private in Resthaven cemetery.
It is suggested that contributions be made to the literacy Volunteers of Ontario County, 208 S. Main St., Canandaigua, 14424; or Phelps Community Library, 15 Church St., Phelps, 14532.
Mrs. Fox was born Dec. 25, 1912, in West Newbury, Mass., the daughter of Harry and Arvilla Stacy Lawrence. Mrs. Fox graduated from Geneseo Normal School. She was a very active member of the United Church of Phelps and the Phelps Grange 747. She was also a member of the Phelps Historical Society and the Ontario County Historical Society. Mrs. Fox helped the community through the Literacy Volunteers of Ontario County and received a national award from Literacy Volunteers. She was very active in the Phelps Community Library and helped restructure the Pioneer Library system. In 1998, she was named Ontario County Citizen of the year and also received United Way's Volunteer of the Year award. In 1992, she was named Ontario County Citizen of the Year and also received United Way's Volunteer of the Year award. In 1992, Mrs. Fox was named Phelps Citizen of the Year by the Phelps Rotary Club.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, James Lawrence of Rochester Francis (Mary) Lawrence of Phoenix, Ariz.; Cindy (Greg) Harris of Downingtown, Pa.; Larry (Peg) Jensen of Rutland, Vt.; Kathy Thompson of Oswego, Doreen (James) Krause of Avon, and Nancy Lawrence of Manchester; and several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Adrian Fox; and nephew, David Lawrence.
