Raymond J. "Ray" Nurse

SHORTSVILLE - Raymond J. "Ray" Nurse, 55, of Shortsville, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004 at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic.
Friends called Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Sainsbury Funeral Home in Shortsville. A funeral service was held Sunday, Aug. 29 at the Shortsville Presbyterian Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Red Jacket Sports Boosters Club.
Mr. Nurse was a graduate of Red Jacket Central School and received a master's degree in education from Morehead State College. He was a quality control engineer at Goulds Pumps in Seneca Falls.
He started and coached the varsity wrestling team, and coached varsity baseball and JV football at Red Jacket School. He also coached Little League Baseball and Vince Lombardi Football teams.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela; a son, Michael (Stephanie) Nurse; a daughter, Rae Gina (Jason) McMahon; a sister, Marcia (Tom) Kelly; one granddaughter, Madisyn Beth Nurse; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia L. Gaylord

Oaks Corners - Virginia Caroline Lamson Gaylord, 90, of Carter Road, a resident of Oaks Corners for many years, passed away Monday, September 13, 2004, at the Geneva Living Center North. The funeral was Friday, September 17, at the McGuigan Funeral Home. The Rev. Arthur Sziemeister, pastor of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lyons officiated. Burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lyons or to a charity of choice.

Mrs. Gaylord was born Jan. 28, 1914, in Newark, daughter of Albert and Lillian Hartnagel Lamson. She graduated in 12932 from Phelps Union Classical School Besides helping with their small crop farm she enjoyed helping others with part-time house work and was an area reporter for the Finger Lakes Times. She worked on the Ontario County Election as an inspector in the town of Phelps and was a member of the Ontario Cou7nty Republication Committee and also town of Phelps Committee. Mrs. Gaylord was an active 65-year member of Clifton Springs Grange, Enterprise Grange of Oaks Corners, the Ontario County Pomona, New York State and National Granges.

She attended Oaks Corners Presbyterian Church and was also a member and attended the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lyons, which she joined in 1930.

She is survived by many friends including Kenneth and Jeanine Phillips and family of Oaks Corners, and Sullivan and Mary Reale and family of Phelps. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth H. Gaylord in 1978.

Donald W. Jones

Geneva - Donald W. Jones, 61, of 1599 County Road 4, died Sunday, September 12, 2004, doing what he loved most, flying his airplane. A candlelight memorial service was held Thursday, September 15, at the Seneca Castle United Methodist Church with the Rev. Babs Steinert officiating. Interment will be at Whitney cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Seneca Castle United Methodist Churchy, PO Box 151, Seneca Castle NY 14457.

Mr. Jones was born April 18, 1943, in Clifton Springs, the son of Everett and Carolyn Dowd Jones, and graduated in 1962 from Phelps Central High School. He was a very active member of the Seneca Castle United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Rochester Ultra Light Fun Flyers. Don also enjoyed hang gliding and was a member of the Rochester Area flyers. He also enjoyed working with wood and doing carpentry. He served on the assessment board for the town of Seneca and as past assistant chief of the Seneca Castle Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Marlene Jones; his son, Todd (Lisa) Jones of Phelps; daughter, Tamara (Richard) Abbott of Conesus; five grandchildren Mason and Sidney Jones and Kennedy, Kaily and Jared Abbott; sister, Donna M. (Barney) Bonicave of Bath; a brother, Tedde Jones of victor; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and a great-nephew.

He was predeceased by his father, Everett Jones, who died in July 2003; and his mother, Carolyn Dowd Jones, who died in August 2004.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Cheney Funeral Home, 70 Main St. Phelps.

Thomas L. Ciardi

CLIFTON SPRINGS/WEBSTER - Thomas L. Ciardi, 54, of Webster, formerly of Clifton Springs, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004 in Charlottesville, Va.
In keeping with his wishes, there were no prior calling hours.
A memorial service was celebrated Sunday, Sept. 26 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 2200 Old Ivy Road, Suite 2, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
Tom was born Jan. 11, 1950, in Clifton Springs, the son of Chip and Eileen Ciardi, and had lived in the Clifton Springs area most of his life. He had previously been employed by the Webster and the Newark post offices and at Xerox in Webster.
Tom and his family owned and operated the Town Pump Restaurant in Orleans. He was also an avid golfer.
He is survived by his loving children, Roan (Bianca) Ciardi of Arizona and Tae (Andy) Smith or Virginia; four grandchildren, Ciari, Madeline and Dominic Ciardi and Maggie Smith; a brother, Ronald Ciardi of Clifton Springs; three aunts, Leisa Volte, Patricia (Phil) D'Arduini and Terry Herzog; an uncle, Babe (Elsie) Ciardi; and several nieces and cousins.

Sharon D. Emblidge

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Sharon D. Emblidge, 65, a friend to all, of Horizon Drive, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2004 at Highland Hospital in Rochester.
Friends called Thursday, Sept. 23 at the Fuller Funeral Home in Canandaigua. Funeral services followed at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made in her name to Lollipop Farm.
Sharon received her master's degree in counseling at Post College in Rochester. She continued to work in counseling for most of her adult life. She loved every creature great and small and will be greatly missed by all.
She is survived by her daughter, Megan (Paul) Chippas of New Jersey; son, Lucas Emblidge of West Virginia; one sister, Christine (husband, Michael Ayers) Freeman of Newark; several nieces and nephews; and her cat, Pipin.

Peter Hamburg

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Peter Hamburg, 85, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004 at the Clifton Springs Hospital Extended Care Unit.
In keeping with his wishes, there were no prior calling hours. Funeral services will be private and burial will be in Clifton Springs Village cemetery.
Peter was born Sept. 6, 1919, the son of Phillip and Eva Hamburg and had lived in the area all of his life. Peter loved farming and was employed by the Robert Phalen Farms in Gorham. He was a simple man who loved his family and will be deeply missed by all he knew.
He is survived by his son, Phillip (Diane) Hamburg of Geneva; two grandchildren, Krista Hamburg of Rochester and Ryan Hamburg of Geneva; two sisters, Shirley McAllister of Phelps and Mae Schweickhard of Geneva; and a brother, Ralph Hamburg of Hornell.
He was predeceased by his wife, Anna; a brother, Edward; and a sister, Emma.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs.

Ruth E. Jacobs

SHORTSVILLE - Ruth E. Jacobs, a loving wife, mother and grandma, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004 at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua.
Friends called Thursday, Sept. 23 at the Sainsbury Funeral Home. A memorial service followed at the funeral home.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Humane Society.
Mrs. Jacobs was born in Salamanca and owned and operated the Just Variety Store in Shortsville for many years with her husband, Robert. She was also an animal lover.
She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Jacobs; a son, David (Mary) Jacobs; a daughter, Judy (Greg Garrett) DiNapoli; a brother, Jerry Abbott; and six grandchildren, Louis, Kim, Jeff, Kelly, Tyler and Shane.

Charles A. Rich Sr.

NEWARK - Charles Rich Sr., 62, Pierson Avenue, Newark, formerly of Phelps, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004 at home with his loving family by his side.
In keeping with is wishes, there were no prior calling hours. A private family service was held Wednesday, Sept. 22 at the Eacker Funeral Home in Phelps. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery in Phelps.
Friends may make contributions in Charles' memory to St. Michael Church, 401 S. Main St., Newark 14513.
Charles was born Oct. 18, 1941, in Buffalo, a son of the late Andrew and Christine Rich. He was retired from the Newark Developmental Center. He was an active member of St. Michael Church in Newark and the Newark Elks Club, and a past administration board member of the local CSEA union. Papa, as he was known to his grandchildren, enjoyed collecting antiques and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Olga, of Newark; daughters, Mary (Bill)Whalen of Newark and Sarah (Michael) Daubman of Poughkeepsie; sons, Paul Mayo of Newark and Charles Rich Jr. of Newark; 11 grandchildren that he adored; brothers, Joseph Rich and William Rich; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Charlotte Caturia.

Marcia Colgrove Sweeney

PHELPS - Marcia Colgrove Sweeney, 92, of 53 William St., died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic.
In keeping with her wishes there were no prior calling hours or funeral services.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Phelps Community Library, 15 Church St., or to the Phelps Fire department Ambulance Fund, 7 Exchange St.
Marcia Elizabeth Colgrove was born Oct. 7, 19911, in Hornell, the daughter of the late Frace Bennet Colgrove and Leta Gertrude Nast. She attended Hornell Public School and two girls' boarding schools - Bishopthorpe Manor in Bethlehem, Pa. and Miss Fuller's School for Girls in Ossining, Westchester County, graduating in 1928. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1933 from the State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and taught at the college for three years.
Marcia then worked for six years at the Erie Railroad in Hornell. She married John G. Sweeney on May 27, 1943 in Washington, D.C., where her husband was stationed while servicing in the U.S. Army. They then moved to their present home in Phelps in 1950.
Marcia held bookkeeping positions in Phelps with the Grange League Federation with Dr. C.J. Kenfield, DDS, and with the Sweeney Insurance Agency which her husband founded.
She wrote poetry with two local writing groups - Galley Slaves, Ink of Geneva and Readers & Writers of Phelps. She also was a member of the Ladies Home Bureau and the Phelps Canasta Club.
She is survived by her husband of 61 year, John; two sons, John F. (Lyonne) Sweeney of Clifton Springs and Philip M Sweeney of Geneva; and four grandchildren.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps.

Joseph Thomas Armitage

PHELPS - Joseph Thomas Armitage, 74, of Mary Street, passed away Friday, Sept. 24, 2004 at the DeMay Living Center in Newark, surrounded by his loving family.
In keeping with his wishes, there were no prior calling hours. A memorial service was held Tuesday, Sept. 28 at the Eacker Funeral Home in Phelps. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Resthaven cemetery.
Friends may contribute to their favorite charity in Joseph's memory.
Joseph was born March 16, 1930, in Indiana, the son of William and Martha Armitage. He grew up in Scotland, returning to the Geneva-Phelps area in his teenage years, where he had lived most of his life. He served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by the New York State Agricultural Experiment station in Geneva.
Joseph had many interests including traveling the open road on his BMW motorcycle, gardening, and the outdoors.
Joseph will be missed by all his friends at Gus's and at the Blue Ribbon Restaurant in Phelps. He was definitely a "Jack of all trades."
He is survived by his daughters, Rebecca (Gerald) O'Donnell of Canandaigua, Robin (Ron) Brown of Newark and Rhonda (Bill) Adams of Newark; a son, R.Steven (Sue) Goodman of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his personal angel, Ron VanHousen.
He was predeceased by his wife, Peggy; a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Kolbeck; and a brother, William Armitage.
