Catherine Gould Checksfield, 71, of 105 Smith St., Syracuse, died Wednesday. She was a life resident of Syracuse. She retired in 1985 from New York Telephone Co. after 36 years and was a member of Upstate Telephone Pioneers. Her husband, Jack, died in 1991. Survivors: Two daughters, Carol Miller of Yellowstone National Park, Wyo., and Janet Halliday of Syracuse; a son, James of Collingswood, N.J.; a sister, Barbara Gould of Elbridge; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Services: Will be announced. Burial, St. Agnes Cemetery. No calling hours. Butler-Badman Funeral Home, Onondaga Hill, has arrangements. Clifton D. Hawks

Clifton D. Hawks, 86, of Syracuse died Thursday. He was born in Sardinia. He retired from Kilian Manufacturing Corp. in Syracuse and the U.S. Postal Service in Liverpool. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Syracuse and its Altar Guild and Senior Citizens Group. He was a member of Clay Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wives, Beatrice and Lillian, died previously. Survivors: His companion, Dorothy Green of Westvale; two sisters, Shirley O'Brien and Virginia Weller, both of Liverpool; a brother, George L. of Liverpool. Services: 10 a.m. Monday in First English Lutheran Church. Burial, Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse. Calling hours, 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Maurer Funeral Home, 300 Second St., Liverpool. Stephen M. Brown Sr.

Stephen M. Brown Sr., 53, of 180 W. Fourth St., Oswego, died Thursday. He was born in Dover, N.H. He was an operator for Constellation Nuclear in Oswego for 29 years. He was a member of American Legion in Oswego and MG Car Club of Western New York. He was a Navy veteran, serving on the USS Sunfish from 1966 to 1972. A son, Stephen M. II, died in 2000. Survivors: His wife of 11 years, the former Judy Gale; two daughters, Amanda Baker of Oswego and Melissa Hauser of Germany; a son, Scott of North Carolina; a stepdaughter, Melodie Cunningham of Syracuse; a stepson, Ross Vittorio of Syracuse; his father, Ralph of  Texas; eight grandchildren. Services: None. Burial, St. Francis Cemetery, Durhamville. Calling hours, 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Sugar and Scanlon Funeral Home, 147 W. Fourth St., Oswego.

Josephine Miller

Josephine Miller, 90, of 585 Sherman Road, Mexico, died Thursday at Loretto Heights Nursing Home in Oswego. Born in Adams Center, she had lived in Pulaski and Rodman before moving to Mexico in 1973. She attended Watertown schools. She worked for the Pulaski Democrat Newspaper for several years and had also worked at Jack's Restaurant in Pulaski. She was a member of Pulaski Wesleyan Church. Her husband, Bud, died in 1999. Survivors: A son, Edward Moyer of Fulton; two stepdaughters, Ann Whitlock of Mascotte, Fla., and Lori Leese of Carnation, Wash.; three stepsons, Steve Miller of Mexico, Wayne Miller of Wikieup, Ariz., and Earl Miller of Pea Ridge, Ark.; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home. Burial, Pulaski Cemetery. Calling hours, 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 52 Park St., Pulaski.

Carmel Parlato

Carmel Esposito Parlato, 72, of 8268 S. Main St., Cicero, died Thursday at Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville. Born in Syracuse, she graduated from North Syracuse High School and lived in Cicero most of her life. She was a bookkeeper for Cicero Cheese Factory for 20 years. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Cicero and a member of Knights of Columbiettes Bishop Curley Council. She was a member for 53 years and a past secretary of American Legion Post 787 Auxiliary. Survivors: Her husband, Ralph; a daughter, Maria Parlato Agosh of Clay; a son, Gennaro of Cicero; four grandchildren. Services: 9 a.m. Monday at Williams Funeral Home and 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Burial, Our Lady of Peace Cemetery. Calling hours, 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 8261 S. Angela J. Bowe

Angela J. Orsini Bowe of Syracuse died Friday. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, she graduated from Syracuse University. She was a supervisor and administrator for special education in the Syracuse City School District. She was a communicant and Eucharistic minister at Holy Family Church. She was a member of Amicitia Club, Daughters of Columbus and Beta Sigma Phi. Her husband, John M., died in 1992. Survivors: A daughter, Aileen Reynolds of Warners; three sisters, Frances Joynt of North Syracuse and Mary Vaccaro and Lillian Muolo, both of Syracuse; two grandchildren. Services: 9 a.m. Monday at Pirro & Sons Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Burial, St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery, Skaneateles. M. Merrill Miller

M. Merrill Miller, 92, of 331 Russell St., Chittenango, died Friday at Stonehedge Nursing Home in Chittenango. Born in Yonkers, he lived in Endwell more than 20 years before moving to Chittenango three years ago. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1932 and received a master's degree from New York University in 1964. He was a self-employed certified public accountant for 60 years and was later president of Miller Securities in Syracuse for nine years. He was a former member of New York State Association of Certified Public Accountants. A daughter, Nancy Hopkins, died in 1994. Survivors: A daughter, Helen Southwick of Virgil; three sons, William of Chittenango, Mark of East Syracuse and Grant of Auburn; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services: 7 p.m. Sunday at G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Westfield, Vt. Calling hours, 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 702 Legion Drive, Chittenango. John E. Justice, 46, of Rosewood Road, Syracuse, died Sunday after he was struck by a car. He was born in Fort Mead, Md. He was a caregiver for Enable in Syracuse and a former automobile mechanic. He was an Army veteran, serving from 1982 to 1984. Survivors: A daughter, Jessica L. Justice of North Syracuse; a son, Joshua of Baldwinsville; a sister, Pamela Ewart of Antelope,  Calif. She was an accounting clerk for State University College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. Her husband, Morton, died in 1986. Survivors: A sister, Roslyn Rice of Las Cruces, N.M. Ida C. VanDerwater, 82, of Chaska, Minn., died June 27. She graduated from Eastwood High School and had lived in Liverpool many years before moving to Chaska in 1993. She was a store manager at Loblaws supermarket in DeWitt. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Liverpool and participated in the Senior Olympics. Her husband, Kenneth, died previously. Survivors: A daughter, Charlene A. Westergaard of Incline Village, Nev.; twin sons, Gary J. of Chanhassen and Dale K. of Chandler, Ariz.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Bonnie of Fulton; two daughters, Sabrina Giberson Columbus of Chestertown and Bobbie Jo Giberson of Fulton; his mother and stepfather, Shirley and Fred Felix of Fulton; four sisters, Linda Newcomb of Baldwinsville, Tammy Allen and Vanessa Snyder, both of Granby, and Katrina Hayes of Phoenix; two brothers, James Foster of Fulton and Henry Giberson of Oswego.
