Clarence L. Veeder
CLIFTON SPRINGS - Clarence L. Veeder, 95, formerly of Clifton Springs and most recently living at the Newark Manor Nursing Home in Newark, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2005.
Family and friends called Wed., May 11 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Funeral services were Thursday, May 12 at the funeral home with the Rev. Lynn Spence officiating. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery in Clifton Springs.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Clarence was born Feb. 20, 1910, in Phelps, the son of Walter and Anna Salisbury Veeder. He was employed at Sylvania in Seneca Falls and Kodak in Rochester until his retirement in 1975. After his retirement he worked at Ontario National Bank and also for the state's Green Thumb Beautification Program. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clifton Springs.
He is survived by two sons, Robert (Monica) Veeder of Beverly Hills, Fla., and Gary (Lorraine) Veeder of Waterloo; two daughters, Bonnie Thomas of McDougall and Kathy Cowan of Redmond, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Joyce Veeder of Waterloo; three stepsons, Gary (Sandy) Nieskes of Englewood, Fla., David (Linda) Nieskes, Ronald (Dawn) Nieskes, both of Phelps; two stepdaughters, Gail (Jim) Sadler of Clifton Springs and Ann Albrecht of Kingman, Ariz.; sister, Edith VanCamp of Phelps; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Leona Croll Veeder and son, John Veeder, both in 1999.
Helen Hoke Erb
CANANDAIGUA - Helen Hoke Erb, 77, of Jefferson Ave., died Thursday, May 12, 2005 at Serenity House in Victor.
Friends called Sunday, May 15 at John C. Johnson Funeral Home Inc., in Canandaigua.
Her funeral service was Monday, May 16 at Reed Corners Federated Church, 3090 Route 247 in Gorham, with interment in Coy cemetery in South Bristol.
She is survived by her husband, William H. Erb; five sons, Chuck (Pam) Hoke of Tacoma, Wash.; Harold (Diane) Hoke of Penn Yan, Joseph (Sharle) Hoke of Crescent City, Calif.; Bernie Hoke of Canandaigua; and Bruce Hoke (Shannon Huff) of Ontario; three daughters, Barbara (Richard) Bunce of Orange County, Calif.; Ann Hoke and her fiance', Tom Derue, of Morrisville, N.C.; and Colleen (Bill) Cornish of Canandaigua; a stepson, Danny Erb of Texas; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her father, Charles Kunes of Clifton Springs; four sisters, Marge (Jack) Stoll of Oregon, Nancy (George) DeSain of North Carolina, Linda (Terry) Wigent of Farmington and Diane (Jerry) Hdguemvourd of Massachusetts; her sister-in-law, Marguerite (Don) Hall and family of Mohawk; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur Hoke, in 1986, and a son, David Hoke, in 2003.
Alva E. Hall
LYONS/CLIFTON SPRINGS - Alva E. Hall, 78, of Lyons, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2005 at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.
Friends called Thursday, May 19 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. Funeral services followed at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery.
Friends may contribute to the American Heart Association.
Alva was born, June 1, 1926, in Clifton Springs, the son of Ralph Sr. and Ruth Hall, and had lived in the area all of his life. He was a welder by trade and loved to work on cars, motorcycles and could fix just about anything with an engine. His family referred to him as Mr. Fix-It.
Alva will be sadly missed by all his loving family and friends.
He is survived by his sons, Alva, Alvin, Robin and Danny; three sisters, Eloise Feiock, Pearl Smith and Helen Chapman; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Terry; a brother, Manley; and a sister, Gladys.
Frances M. O'Neill
WATERLOO/PHELPS - Mrs. Frances M. O'Neill, 92, of 369 E. Main St., formerly of Phelps, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005 in Huntington Living Center.
There were no prior calling hours. A memorial service was Saturday, May 21 at the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall, in Waterloo. Jeffrey Bugonian, elder of the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Middletown, officiated. Burial will be in Restvale cemetery in Seneca Falls.

Frances was born may 17, 1913, in Union Springs, the daughter of Fred and Ethel Garfield Newman. She was employed for many years at J.C. penny Co., Inc. in Geneva and later retired from Cole's Clothing in Newark.
She was a longtime member of the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall. She lived in Phelps for 40 years and later moved to the Seneca Falls/Waterloo area.
She is survived by a son, Clinton (Jacqueline) O'Neill of Waterloo; two daughters, Betty J. Sheridan and Alice (William) Dickman, both of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren, numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold O'Neill, in 1981; one daughter, Rosemary Buono in 1986; and two brothers, Charles in 1978 and Paul in 1985.
Arrangements are by the Coe-Genung Funeral Home in Waterloo.
Donald J. Snyder
PENN YAN - Donald J. Snyder, 73, of 286 W. Lake Road, died Monday, May 16, 2005.
Friends called Sunday, May 23 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Aileen Robbins, officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview cemetery.

Don was born March 31, 1932, in Penn Yan, the son of Cyrus L. and Lina Fisher Snyder. He was a graduate of Penn Yan Academy, Class of 1950. He served during the Korean War with the Air Force and was a member of the Johnson-Costello American Legion Post. He retired from NYNEX in 1995 after 40 years of employment. Don was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a coach with the Babe Ruth League for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Edith "Blondie" Snyder; three children, Gale (Alan) Jensen of Penn Yan, Julie (Richard) Brooks of Clifton Springs and Katie (Craig "Andy") Nissen of Rushville; six grandchildren, Christopher, Janelle, Jeremy and Brittany Jensen, Zachary and Tyler Brooks; a cousin, Debra Hatch of Minoa; three sisters-in-law, Flora Nielsen, Doris "Clem" Nielsen and Donna Snyder, all of Penn Yan; a brother-in-law, George Nielsen of Penn Yan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Richard and William Snyder.
Shirley Mattoon
PHELPS - Shirley Mattoon, 77, of Phelps, died Thursday, May 19, 2005 at Strong Memorial Hospital.
There were no prior calling hours. Friends were invited to attend funeral services on Monday, May 23 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps, with the Rev. Thomas Mull officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery in Phelps.
Mrs. Mattoon was born July 6, 1927, in Clifton Springs, the daughter of Francis and Mary Lyon Eighmey. She was a member of the Phelps American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
It is suggested that memorial donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
She is survived by her children, Joseph John III and Michael Francis, both of Phelps, Cynthia Mattoon of Billings, Mont., Judith Ann (Frank) Sibio of Clay and Mary Jo (David) Shackleton of Geneva; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Donald Eighmey and grandson, Joshua Mattoon.
Mr. Robert F. Noble
CLYDE/FLORIDA - Mr. Robert F. Noble, 81, died Friday, May 20, 2005 at Woodland Terrace in Deland, Fla.
Friends called Thursday, May 26 at the Cheney Funeral Home, in Phelps. Funeral services were Friday, May 27 at the funeral home with the Rev. Lynn Spence officiating. Burial will be in South Lyons cemetery.
It is suggested that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 435 E. Henrietta Road, Rochester 14620.
Mr. Noble was born April 10, 1924, in Clyde, the son of George and Mary Smith Noble. He retired as bookkeeper from Hartman Metal Fabricators in Victor. He was a member of the Wayne County Depression Glass Club and a past member of the Savannah Grange.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Williams of Lyons; children, Roger Noble of Phelps and Apopka, Fla.; and Cathy (John) Clancy of Orange City, Fla.; five grandchildren, Roger (Kim) Noble of Canandaigua, Michael Noble of Middlesex, Marcy (Tom) Mitchell of Walworth, Michelle (Paul) Smith and Kevin (Ami) Williams, both of Macedon; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Harold, Dick, Tom, and Earl and his wife, Lila Noble, who died in 1988.
Thornton D. Strecker Jr.
NEWARK/CLIFTON SPRINGS - Thornton Duane Strecker Jr., 58, died Saturday, May 21, 2005 at the Albany Medical Center.
Graveside funeral services were Friday, May 27 at Oaklawn cemetery, Oaks Corners with the Rev. Peter Clifford officiating.
Memorials in his name may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
Mr. Strecker was born April 23, 1947, in Englewood, N.J., the son of Thornton and Margaret Hohensee Strecker. He graduated from Riverdell High School in Oradell, N.J. He then attended college for a couple of years. Thornton retired from the Navy on disability after serving for six years on a destroyer, the USS Knox, during the Vietnam War. He had lived in the Albany area for the past 15 years.
He is survived by his sister, Barbara Rathbun of Clifton Springs; several aunts and uncles; a nephew and niece and nine cousins.
Elmer J. Maslyn
CLIFTON SPRINGS - Elmer Maslyn, 75, of Pearl Street, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2005 at the Clifton Springs Hospital Nursing Home.
Friends called Wednesday, June 1 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Thursday, June 2 at St. Felix Church in Clifton Springs. Burial will be in St. Agnes cemetery.
Friends may contribute to the American Diabetes Association in Elmer's memory.
Elmer was born Aug. 5, 1929, in Clifton Springs, the son of Elmer and Margaret Maslyn, and had lived in the area all of his life. He was a lifelong farmer, owning and operating his own farm which is now in its fourth generation. Farming was Elmer's life. He was a member of Farm Bureau and an active member of St. Felix Church. Elmer loved to hunt. He was happiest spending time with his loving family, especially his grandchildren whom he adored. Elmer will be sadly missed by all of his loving friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Clifton Springs; five children, William Maslyn, Charles (Vicky) Maslyn, Lori (Alan) Norsen, Jim (Lisa) Maslyn and Janet (Mark) Wheeler, all of Clifton Springs; two sisters, Betty (Elmer) Gordner of Seneca Castle and Marjorie (Ted) Crosby of Phelps; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Maslyn of Clifton Springs and Joanne Maslyn of Farmington; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Elmer was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Ken; and a granddaughter, Ashlee Ann Wheeler.
David R. Roll
CLIFTON SPRINGS - Mr. David R. Roll, 74, of 1650 County Road 43, died Friday, June 3, 2005 at Clifton Springs Hospital after an extended illness.

Family and friends called Sunday, June 5 and Monday, June 6 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. There was a Masonic Service held Monday, June 6 at the funeral home. Funeral services were Tuesday, June 7 in the Clifton Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lynn Spence officiating. Burial followed in Riverview cemetery in Clifton Springs.

Mr. Roll was born Aug. 8, 1930, in Avoca, a son of Edwin and Louise Wolf Roll. For the past 60-plus years he had lived in Clifton Springs. David was a partner in Crowley's Lawn and Power Equipment Co. of Phelps for many years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the Air Force. On Jan. 21, 1956, he married
the former Hildreth "Birdie" Bird. Mr. Roll was past master of Serenity Mason Lodge 200 of the F&AM; in Phelps. He was also a Shriner in the Damascus Lodge of Rochester. David was past president of the Phelps Rotary Club, where he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest award bestowed upon a Rotarian. He had volunteered many hours for the Food Cupboard in Clifton Springs.
Surviving are his wife of more than 49 years, Hildreth "Birdie" Roll of Clifton Springs; one daughter, Patricia Roll of Clifton Springs; one son, Daniel (Carolynn) Roll of Erie, Pa.; four grandchildren, Emily Moore, Mary, Christopher and Matthew Roll; one great-grandson, Aidan Moore; his brother, Donald (Barbara) Roll of Galway; his sisters, Violet (Ralph) Freeman of Friendship, Arlene (Wilford) McWilliams of Zebulon, N.C., and Sharon (Walter) Slagle of Fayetteville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Edwin; and his sisters, Hilda Boniak and Lois Roll.
