Witt, Margaret H. - Margaret H. Witt, 86, formerly of Lea Drive, Newark died September 9, 1998 at the Newark Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Witt was the daughter of Frank and Margaret Downs Howley, born on January 5, 1912 in Newark. She retired from New York Telephone in Newark in 1974. She was a member of St. Michael Church and the Legion of Mary of Newark and the New York Telephone Pioneers. Interment in Newark cemetery. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Bonnie Witt of Newark; William and Patricia Witt of Rochester; daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Dennis Terhaar of St. Louis, MO; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Mary Witt of Seneca Falls; nephew Robin Witt. She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Witt in 1980 and her daughter Ann Newton in 1991.

Birch, Sylvia M. - Sylvia M. Birch, 93, formerly of Macedon, died on Aug. 26, 1998 in Fort Worth, Texas. Mrs. Birch was born in Towanda, PA on June 13, 1905, a daughter of Burt and Eva Nichols Myers. She lived in Texas for 11 years and was a member of the Macedon Senior Citizens. Mrs. Birch lived in Macedon for several years. Interment in St. Ann's cemetery, Palmyra. Mrs. Birch is survived by two daughters, Charlene (Donald) Mack of Azle, Texas, and Leona (Robert) Alvut of Fairport; two sons, James of Sodus, formerly of Newark, and Charles of Montana; several grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Lemual Myers of Niagara Falls, NY; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Ross, in 1984; daughter-in-law, Lela Birch on Oct. 3, 1997; and son, William, in 1970.

Caves, Gladys M. - Gladys M. Caves, 90, a resident of the Seneca Nursing Home in Phelps, died August 28, 1998. She was born in Phelps to Peter and Fanny Goetzman Caves on Jan. 8, 1908. She was a life-long area resident and was a bookkeeper for the Caves family lumber yards in Phelps and Newark. Interment in the Resthaven cemetery, Phelps. Surviving are her cousin, Leon (Ruth) Bartleson of North Rose and several second and third cousins.

Heald, Albert C. - Albert C. Heald, 78, of Sodus, died August 28, 1998 at ViaHealth in Sodus. He was born March 15, 1920 in Sodus, to Charles and Urania Arnold Heald. He was an auto mechanic for 30 years for Scofield Motors and Marvin Buick-Pontiac in Newark. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newark. He belonged to the Pioneer Gas Engine Assn. and NYS Steam Engine Assn. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Martha Wedman Heald; three daughters, Mrs. James (Dolores) Salerno of Marion, Mrs. Lawrence (Ruby) Frey, and Mrs. Steven (Valorie) McDonald of Sodus; five grandchildren; a sister, Helen Hartnagle of Newark; sisters-in-law, Mary and Madeline Heald; nieces and nephews. Predeceased by a son, Gary in 1960.

Backus, Claude John, Sr. - Claude John Backus, Sr., 70, of Bostwick Road, Phelps, died on August 28, 1998 at Clifton Springs Hospital. Mr. Backus is survived by his wife, Laratte; four children, Claudia McAbee, Roger Backus and Joy Backus, all of Phelps, and Claude Backus Jr. of Clifton Springs; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers, Lester and Roy of Phelps, and Carl of Newark; two sisters in Phelps, Bernie Borner and Irene Cestte.

VanSchaffel, Carol - Carol VanSchaffel, 48, died September 1, 1998. She was an employee of Ashley Insurance in Williamson and a member of the Finger Lakes Regional Insurance Company. She was active with the Boy Scouts. Interment in Marion cemetery. Carol is survived by 2 sons, James of Newark, and Carl, in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, OK; her mother, Nancy DeFisher of Ellenton, FL; 3 sisters, Barbara (Paul) DeLue, Patricia (Gordon) DePoint, Deborah (Stephen) Roegiers, all of Marion; her ex-husband, James of Newark; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Richard DeFisher.

Prober, Carl M. - Carl M. Prober, 90, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, in Blanchard, Oklahoma. Mr. Prober leaves two sons, Charles (Peggy) Prober of Rose, and Carl F. Prober; three daughters, Lois Shwock of TX, Beverly (Eldon) Cook of OK, and Marlene (Gary) Roeschlaub of OK; 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; one brother, Ernie Prober of Manchester; one sister, Hilda DeLue of Marion; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Avis, and a son, Terry Lee.

Bennett, Alice M. - Alice M. Bennett, 73, of Old Route 31, died on Aug. 22, 1998 at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester. She was born in Clyde on July 25, 1925, the daughter of Rocco and Angeline (Jemmerino) DiSanto. She retired in 1987 from the Newark Developmental Center and was a member of St. Michael Church, Newark. Entombment in St. John's Mausoleum, Clyde. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Anthony "Tony"; two sons, David (Eileen) of Lyons and Edward (Holly) of Santa Barbara, Calif.; four grandchildren, Alayna (Brice) Shipley of North Rose, Matthew (Casandra) of Lebanon, TN, Cresta and Laurel, both of Santa Barbara, CA; two brothers, Joe DeSanto of Lyons and Henry (Angie) DiSanto of Clyde; four sisters, Emma Quataro of Geneva, Lucy Ubiergo of Newark, Louise Blanch of Lyons and Flo Kowalczyk of Liverpool; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Rocco DiSanto, and a sister, Mamie D'Augustine.

Harrington, Josephine M. - Josephine M. Harrington, 49, died at her home on Aug. 21, 1998 after a brief illness. Josephine was born the daughter of Arthur and Anna Poli Harrington on Sept. 3, 1948, in Lyons. Burial in East Palmyra cemetery. Josephine is survived by her mother, Anna of Newark; brother, Arthur Jr. of Seneca Falls; sisters, Sarah (Fred) Mays of Newark and Rose (George) Schuldt of Lyons; many nieces and nephews.

Santelli, Pasquale A. "Patsy" - Patsy A. Santelli, of Murray Street, died Aug. 23, 1998 at Clifton Springs Hospital. Mr. Santelli was born April 3, 1928, in Newark, the son of John and Theresa Muoio Santelli. Patsy had worked at the Wayne County Nursing Home for 12 years, retiring in 1994. Prior to that, he was the warehouse manager at C.W. Stuart Nursery in Newark for over 30 years. He was a member of St. Michael's Church. Patsy was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Army in the occupation of Japan. Interment will be in Newark cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth (Allen) Santelli; four children, John (Laura) Santelli, Betty (Theodore) Miller, Michael (Gail) Santelli, and David Santelli; seven grandchildren, Allen Miller, Christopher Santelli, Patrick Santelli, Justin Miller, Jennifer Santelli, Andrew Santelli, Trevor Santelli; and a sister, Mary (Donald) VerStraete, all of Newark.

Leoni, Amanda Grace - Amanda Grace Leoni, 18, of Lyons, died Tuesday, August 25, 1998 at Via Health of Wayne, Newark Campus. Amanda was born in Geneva on September 17, 1979, the daughter of James and Joanne Muto Leoni. She was a graduate of Lyons High School, Class of 1997, where she was in the Honor Society, a cheerleader for the football and basketball teams, and she played in the school band. Amanda would have been a sophomore at St. Joseph's University In Philadelphia. She was a member of Sigma Phi Sorority. This summer, Amanda worked at the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES in special education at the North Street School in Geneva, where she was a teacher's aide for children ages 8 to 11. Interment in South Lyons cemetery. Amanda is survived by her parents, James and Joanne Muto Leoni of Lyons; a brother, Andrew James of Lyons; maternal grandparents. Dominic and Grace Muto of Lyons; paternal stepgrandfather, Robert Loveless of Lyons; aunts, Carol Muto of Rochester, Linda (Leoni) KGuss of CA, and Donna (Leoni) Carr of Clyde; uncles, Thomas Muto of Wolcott, Paul Muto of Clyde, and Nicholas Leoni of Rochester; great-aunts, Ann (Muto) Malek of Pittsburgh, PA, Rosemarie Muto of Lyons, Alice Colasurdo of Clyde and Dulcia "Sis" Miller of Clyde; great-uncle, Robert Muto of Lyons; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Oscar Leoni in 1976; uncle, Anthony Muto in 1975; and paternal grandmother, Virginia "Midge" Loveless in 1998.

Kneut, Robert - Robert Kneut, 69, of 4557 Route 31, Palmyra, died on Aug. 14, 1998 at the Wayne County Health Facility. Mr. Kneut owned and operated his own farm, before retiring in 1975. He was later employed by DeWitt Concrete. He was also a member of the Port Gibson Fire Department. Mr. Kneut is survived by his wife Arloa of Palmyra; two sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip and Judy Kneut of Clifton Springs, and David and Lori Kneut of Virginia Beach; four daughters and three sons-in-law: Kathy and Stephen Roeland of Clifton Springs, Theresa and Bobby Dorgan of Phelps, Cindy and Kirk McCreary of Cicero, and Christine Shield of Clayton, NC; three stepchildren and their spouses, Clay and Sharon Burke of Lyons; Scott Burke of Palmyra; and Susan and Johnny Wes Scott; his mother, Elizabeth Kneut of Newark; two sisters, Margie Galen of Rushville, and Alice Klahm of Clifton Springs; 13 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Boeheim, Charles A. - Mr. Charles A. Boeheim, 69, of Clifford Hill, Leesburg, FL, formerly of Lyons, died on July 27, 1998. Mr. Boeheim was born in Lyons. He served on the Lyons Board of Education for 11 years. Mr. Boeheim was a former Chairman of Lyons Republican Committee, Past Exalted Ruler and 50 year member of BPO Elks Lodge 869 of Lyons. He was a trustee of Lyons Village Board and vice-mayor for three years. He was a charter member and past treasurer of Wayne Hills Country Club, member of Lyons Fire Department National Association of Accountants, and ATO Fraternity. He was a retired comptroller for Borden, Inc. Mr. Boeheim was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He moved to Leesburg in 1990 and was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg. Mr. Boeheim is survived by his wife, Sue A. Boeheim of Leesburg, Fla.; daughters, Linda (Paul) Hines of Rome, Ga., and Dawn Boeheim of Fairport, N.Y.; a son, Charles T. (Chidori) Boeheim of Redwood City, Calif.; twin brother, John (June) Boeheim of Santa Ana, Calif.; four grandchildren, James, Nicole, Adrian and Meredith; several nieces and nephews.Mr. Boeheim was preceded in death by his brothers, Frederick T. and James A., and sister, Lulu.

VanHoover, Isaac Jeffery - Issac Jeffery VanHoover of Williamson, died on August 12, 1998. The infant was the son of Jeffery and Katrina Ameele VanHoover; he is also survived by his brother, Abram; grandparents, David and Mary Jane VanHoover of Williamson, James and Susan Ameele of Williamson; great-grandparents, Elsie VanHoover of Newark, Milton and Maggie Ameele of Walworth, Arthur and Rosie Becker of Sodus.

Stirpe, Connie - Mary "Connie" Stirpe, 74, of Sunset Drive, Lyons, died on Aug. 14, 1998 at her home. Mrs. Stirpe was born in Leeds, England, on Jan. 7, 1924, the daughter of Robert and Evelyn Smith Ward. She worked with her husband, Tony, and was a member of St. Michael's Church. She served in World War II in the British Women's Land Army in England. Besides her husband of 53 years, Mrs. Stirpe is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Shirley Stirpe of Arizona; a brother, Robert (Dorothy) Ward of Filey, England; a grandson, Anthony (Deirdre) Stirpe of Arizona; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Russell) Sanders and Natalie Stirpe, both of Arizona; two great-grandsons, Christian and Lucas Sanders; special niece Connie Cluderay of Leeds, England; and nieces and nephews. Mrs. Stirpe was predeceased by a brother, John Ward.

Chapin, Glenn Robert - Glenn Robert Chapin, 50, of Woodruff Rd., Huron, died at Myers Hospital on August 15, 1998.He is survived by his wife, Judith; four children, Heather (Todd) Rudy of Huron, Robyn Martha, at home, Nathan Robert of Hickam AFB, Adam Charles, at home; parents, Glenn and Florence Chapin of Huron; three sisters, Janice (James) Schley of Canton, CT, Holly (Gilbert) Burgess of Newark, Elise (Edward) Gaylord of Lyons; three brothers, Arthur (Patricia), Douglas (Robin), all of Huron, Donald (Laureen) of Rockaway, NJ; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Diana in 1966.

Siler, John A. Jr. - John A. Siler, Jr., 64, of Naples, Florida died on August 11, 1998. Mr. Siler was born and raised in Newark. A Korean War Veteran, Mr. Siler was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose, American Legion and Volunteer Firefighters of Newark. He enjoyed hunting and golfing and was an avid photographer. He is survived by his companion, Leslie Browning, three children, Michael A. Siler and Christopher J. Siler both of Naples, and Jean Marie Siler of Newark; three brothers - Hubert, Francis and Richard Siler all of Newark; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sister Cora Johnston.

Hager, John H. - John H. Hagar, 57, of Newark died unexpectedly on August 16, 1998 at Via Health, Newark Campus. John is survived by his wife, Judith Rahm Hagar; sons Richard Hagar of Newark and John (Christine) Hagar Jr. of Clifton Springs; four grandchildren, Amanda Lynn Halligan, Judith Murray Hagar, Matthew John Hagar and Samantha Maria VanWinkle.

VandenBout, Milton C. - Milton C. VandenBout, 89, of Southern Pines, North Carolina, died July 31, 1998 at St. Joseph of the Pines Nursing facility. He moved from Palmyra in 1980, after he retired from the VandenBout Assoc. of Palmyra. He is survived by his wife, Beryl; a son, Neil VandenBout of Rochester; daughter, Meredith B. Davis of Sarasota, Florida and four grandchildren.

Pulver, Edmond M. - Edmond M. "Ed" Pulver, 83, of North Goodman Street, Rochester, died on Aug. 6, 1998 at Genesee Hospital in Rochester. Mr. Pulver was born in Fairville on Sept. 11, 1914, a son of William and Matie Eyer Pulver. He retired from Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester and had lived in Rochester. He was a member of the Palmyra Moose Club. Interment in Elmwood cemetery, Lyons. Mr. Pulver is survived by two brothers, Russell (Irene) and William of Newark; three sisters, Mabel Costello of Brighton, Matie Lehn of Lyons, Adele Siers of Howell, NJ; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Dayton, in 1995.

Kunkel, Gail Bevis - Gail Bevis Kunkel, 55, of Alexandria, VA died on August 4, 1998 of complications following major hip replacement surgery. Mrs. Kunkel grew up in Newark, where she attended Newark High School. She also attended Salve Regina College in Newport, Rhode Island, and earned her degree in fashion merchandising in 1963 from Chamberlain School of Retailing in Boston, Massachusetts. Following her graduation from Chamberlain, she spent several years as a buyer for Filenes Department Store in Boston, and the next 12 years running showrooms for a clothing manufacturer, John Meyer of Norwich in Boston, Chicago and New York, collaborating with famous designer Perry Ellis on new clothing designs for the John Meyer Line. She traveled extensively throughout the United States in the 1970's with her husband William, a broadcasting executive. Since 1981, she has been a resident of Alexandria, VA. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, and the Campagna Center in Alexandria, and a devoted wife and mother who loved interior decorating and gardening. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, William Robert Kunkel, Jr. and her two children, Kara Kunkel Butcher of Richmond, VA, and Craig Andrew Kunkel of Nantucket, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Bevis of Daytona Beach, Florida.
