Fenyn, Hendrik W. - Hendrick "Henk" Fenyn, 66, died on Sunday, December 20, 1998 after a long illness. Henk was born the son of Adriaan and Willemina VanderHeuvel Fenyn, March 17, 1932 in Holland. He was self-employed as a mason contractor specializing in fireplaces. He was involved in building many homes and businesses in the village, town and surrounding areas including his church, Arcadia Reformed Church, Hope Avenue Apartments and the Sherwin Williams Store. Norm Waterman proudly flew the Army flag in honor of Henk's service to this country during WWII. Henk was a member of the Arcadia Zoning Board of Appeals, the Newark VFW Post 2883, Newark American Legion and the Newark Elks Lodge. Henk is survived by his wife of 39 years, Johanna Fey Fenyn; sons, Adrian "Ed" (Mary Ann) Fenyn and Timothy Fenyn both of Newark; daughter, Pamela (Fred) White of Rochester; two grandsons; three granddaughters; brother, Adrian (Mary Jo) Fenyn of Newark; sisters, Jane (Ray) Jeszenka of Pittsford and Jeannette (Marvin) Gage of North Carolina; several nieces and nephews.

VanZandt, Donald T. - Donald T. VanZandt, 84, died peacefully Saturday, December 19, 1998 at the Seneca Nursing Home in Waterloo. Mr. VanZandt was born the son of Earl and Etta Thayer VanZandt, January 28, 1914 in Fort Morgan, Colorado. He was a manager at Calcite Plant in Michigan Limestone Operations in Rogers City Michigan until 1964 when he was transferred to United States Steel Corp. in Pittsburgh, PA. There he served as assistant Sales Manager, Raw Materials Division until his retirement in 1977. Mr. Van Zandt was a member of Park Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder for many years. He was a former Boy Scout Leader and past president of the Rogers City School Board in Michigan. The funeral home proudly flew the Navy flag in honor of his service to our country dwing WWII. Interment at Ottawa cemetery in Pontiac, Michigan. His Wife, Peggy, predeceased Mr. VanZandt on February 18, 1998. Mr. VanZandt is survived by his son, Brent N. VanZandt of Groton, New York; daughters, Jacquelyn (Rob) Fairbanks of Mihigan, Nancy (Larry) Johnson of Newark and Carol Davies of Clifton Springs; eight grandchildren and four nephews.

Pickering, Helen M. - Helen M. Pickering, 64, of Arcadia Zurich Norris Road, died at ViaHealth of Wayne, Sodus Campus, on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998 after an extended illness. Helen was born in Sodus on Oct. 14, 1934, a daughter of Abraham and Ethel Chalker DeRue, where she had been a life long resident. Interment at Sodus Rural cemetery. Surviving are her husband, Charles; daughter, Mary Ann Seeley of Port Gibson; three sons, Gordon (Kathleen) of Lyons, Dale (Teresa) of Sodus, and Bruce (Lisa) of Sodus; 11 grandchildren; and sister, Carolyn Norrison of Palmyra.

Cornwell, Catherine D. - Catherine D. Cornwell, 75, of Maple Ridge Rd., Arcadia, died Dec. 20, 1998 at the DeMay Living Center, Newark. Catherine was born in Rochester, November 27, 1923, the daughter of John and Dorothy Hill Morath. She was an LPN at Rochester General and Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, and was a member of the Fairville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Catherine is survived by Paul, her husband of 30 years; four daughters, Mrs. George (Kathy) Boh of Geneva, Ohio, Mrs. Jim (Kris) Calabro of Amherst, Ohio, Mrs. Robert (Karen) Smith of Marion, and Mrs. Joe (Michelle) Lawrence of New Bern, NC; three stepsons, Kim (Sharon) Cornwell of Sodus, Wayne (Kelly) Cornwell of Newark, and Andrew Cornwell of Lyons; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Shelly Hutchinson of East Rochester, and Jackie Nerau of Rochester; mother-in-law Iva Cornwell; nieces and nephews.

Schermerhorn, Edward H. - Edward H. Schermerhorn, 82, of Ontario Street, Phelps, died December 20, 1998, at Clifton Springs Hospital. Edward was born January 3, 1916 in Phelps, the son of Harley and Delphia Schermerhorn. He lived in the area all of his life. He retired from Cliftronics in Clifton Springs and had served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Phelps American Legion Post and the Newark VFW. Interment in Resthaven cemetery. Edward is survived by his wife Gertrude; three stepchildren, Marjorie Baker of Palmyra, Sharon (David) Henri of Middlesex, and Allen (Vicky) Nichols of Dexter, NY; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Hazel Hood of Waterloo; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Alice and Richard Bremer of Phelps; nieces and nephews.

Altman, Charlotte C. - Charlotte C. Altman, 66, of Clifton Springs, died Dec. 10, 1998, at Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic. Charlotte was born Jan. 9, 1932, in Newark, the daughter of Nuntz and Margaret DeMarco, and had lived in the area her whole life. She was self-employed in her home as a family care provider for the State of New York for many years. Charlotte was a member St. Felix Church. Interment in Newark cemetery. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Robert Altman of Clifton Springs; four daughters, Dorothy (Fred) Cardinale of Jamestown, NY, Mary Ann (Paul) Steo of Pittsford, Donna (Steve) Sachell of Victor, and Roberta (Don) Vankouwenberg of Newark; son, David (Kelly) Altman of East Rochester; 10 grandchildren; brother, Rudy (Lillian) DeMarco of Newark; sister, Mary Jane (Stan) DeRidder of Clifton Springs; several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Gary, Alice - Mrs. Alice Gary, 92, formerly of East Union St., Newark, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at Via Health of Wayne in Sodus. Mrs. Gary was born Oct. 11, 1906 in Holland, the daughter of Benjamin and Regina Bruggman Bankert. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church. Alice for many years had worked at Reed Manufacturing and the Hickox Co. Interment in East Newark cemetery. She is survived by a sister, Emma Gary of Newark, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John Gary, Sept. 28, 1971.

Robyn, Josephine - Josephine "Josie" Robyn, 81, died Dec. 10, 1998, at Via Health of Wayne (Newark) after a brief illness. Josie was born the daughter of Daniel and Anna Robyn, Sept. 4, 1917, in Phelps. She had worked at the Ontario Telephone Co. as an operator. She retired from the Newark Developmental Center. Josie was a member of the Arcadia Reformed Church and the Way-Ont Saddle Club. She is survived by her brother, Daniel Robyn of Phelps; a niece, Dorothy (Robert) Crough of PA; a nephew, Ray Phillips of North Rose and several close friends. She was predeceased by her sister Sarah Salisbury.

Finn, John - John Finn, 77, died December 13, 1998. Mr. Finn was a retired Liberty School custodian, a 50-year member of the Liberty Fire Department, member of the Palmyra Sharing and Caring Club, and a member of St. Gregory's Church. Entombment in White Haven cemetery. John is survived by two daughters, Diane (Allen) Welch, Marion and Denise (Frank) Racaniello, Westchester, NY; three grandchildren, Aimee, Michael and Jeffrey Welch; two brothers, Frank and Michael Finn, both of Liberty, NY; a sister in Florida, Ellen Clapper.

Orbaker, Margaret - Margaret Orbaker, 89, of Marion and Williamson, died December 12, 1998. She was a WWII Captain in the Army Nurse Corps and a retired Myers Community Hospital nurse. Interment in Marion cemetery. Margaret is survived by two daughters, Barbara (James) DeFisher of Marion and Muriel (Michael) Tunley of Williamson; grandchildren, David DeFisher, Stacey (Steven) VanDerBrook, Lisa (Jason) Morohan, Michael Tunley; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Meade, Kevin H. - Kevin H. Meade, 42, of Clyde, died December 13, 1998 after an automobile accident. He was employed by the Water Department for the Town of Ontario. He is survived by his parents, Harold "Pat" and Wilma Meade of Clyde; two brothers, Paul (Nancy) Meade of Marion, and Charles Meade of Phelps; several aunts, uncles, and nieces.

Costello, Joseph L. - Joseph L. Costello of Webster, formerly of Newark, died November 27, 1998. A World War II Army veteran, he retired from Newark Developmental Center after many years as an Occupational Therapist. Interment in White Haven Memorial Park, Perinton. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elvia; his loving daughters, Carol (Walt) Zehder of Penfield, and Rita (Glenn) Creel of California; grandchildren, David and Wendy Zehder and Amy Rose Creel; sister, Betty Wolosyn, of Newark; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ross, John J. - John J. Ross, 81, of Las Vegas, NV, died Sunday, December 13, 1998. He was born in Newark on September 5, 1917, graduated from Newark High School in June 1936, and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in June 1941. In 1941, he was drafted and served 28 months active duty in the South Pacific Islands. Before retiring in 1978, Mr. Ross was Personnel Director of several Veteran Hospitals. He is survived by his wife, Rose, four children and several grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Venturin of Jacksonville, FL, and Vivian Renaldi of Newark. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Charles A. Ross, who was the Managing Editor of the Courier-Gazette for many years. John Ross is buried in Arlington National cemetery in Virginia.

Higgins, Margaret M. - Margaret M. Higgins, age 93, died Dec. 14, 1998 in Blossom View Nursing Home, Sodus. Mrs. Higgins was a long-time resident of Binghamton. She was a retiree of Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, where she was Housekeeper for the Sisters of Charity Convent House. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack; her sons, Joseph, Gerald, John D. and William. She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Layton and Elizabeth Savage both of Marion; son, Robert of CA; 16 grandchildren; and 20 greatgrandchildren.

Nephew, Irene P. - Irene P. Nephew, 89, of Fairville Station Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at the DeMay Living Center. Mrs. Nephew was born in Lyons September 4, 1909, the daughter of Michael and Mary Moran Palone. She retired in 1972 from the Newark Developmental Center, where she worked in the laundry. She was a member of the Fairville Fire Dept. Womens Auxiliary. Interment in Fairville cemetery. She is survived by one daughter, Mary VanEenaeme of Newark; two granddaughters, Vera Hack, Laurie Henrie both of Newark; six great-grandchildren, Megan, Matthew, Amy, Chad, Cory, Kaitlyn; two sistersin-law, Ethel Palone of Clyde, Alice Palone of Newark; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond in 1968.

Favata, Raida Dedomenico - Raida Dedomenico Favata, 76, of Amy Drive, Wheatfield, died Friday, November 27, 1998 in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Favata was born September 17, 1922 in Spezzano Piccolo, Province of Calabria, Italy, the daughter of Sully and Rosina (Mileti) Dedomenico, she came here in 1926. After coming to this country, she lived in Newark, New York. She was the wife of the late Dr. Benedict V. Favata (1992) and they lived in Rochester for a number of years. She moved to Beverly Hills, California where she later managed a luxury apartment building. She moved back to Rochester and lived in Niagara Falls for the past year. She received a Master's Degree from Iowa State University in Speech and Hearing Pathology. She worked at the Chicago Institute for the Deaf, St. Louis Institute and the Rochester Institute for the Deaf. She was a Carmelite Nun for five years in Loretta, Pennsylvania and a member of the Poor Clare's for two years in Warrick, Virginia. She and her husband enjoyed collecting antiques and she was listed in the Who's Who of American Antique Experts. She was the wife of the late Dr. Benedict V. Favata (1992). She is survived by her sister, Concetta Koury and a nephew. Interment in Gate of Heaven cemetery, Town of Lewiston.

McCarthy, Mildred M. - Mildred M. McCarthy, age 77 of Bliss Road, Red Creek, died December 4, 1998 at the Newark Campus of Wayne ViaHealth. Interment at St. Lawrence cemetery in North Lawrence, NY. Mrs McCarthy was predeceased by her husband, Timothy C., in 1955. She is survived by five sons, Timothy of Sodus, Dale of Port Byron, Ray of Sodus, Lee of North Rose, Gary of Newark; many grandchildren and great- grandchildren; her brother Sam Martin of Richville, NY.

David, Gordon D. - Gordon D. David, 49, of East Avenue, Newark, died unexpectedly on December 3, 1998 at Via Health of Wayne - Newark. Interment in Fairville cemetery. He was born the son of Nelson and Ida Mae Morgan David, April 19, 1949 in Henderson, New York. He was employed at Finger Lakes Auto Mart in Farmington. He is survived by his wife Edna Stewart; sons, Gordon David Jr., Eugene Valastro and Duane David; daughters, Kristen Valastro and her husband Edward Robinson, April David and Domanique David; seven grandchildren; brothers, Pat (Esther) David and Bill David; sisters, Julie David, Betty (Henry) Prince and Alice Prince; nieces and nephews.

Rumsey, Marion W. - Marion W. Rumsey, 92, formerly of North Main Street, Newark, died Monday, December 7, 1998 at Via-Health of Wayne, Sodus. Mrs. Rumsey was born May 8, 1906 to Robert and Ida Chapman Wells, in Clifton Springs. She had retired from the Newark Developmental Center. Interment at the Pioneer cemetery in Manchester. She is survived by her sister Ruth Baker of Canandaigua, a niece, and many cousins, as well as special friends Carlton (Pat) Timerson of Newark and Betty Smith of Phelps. She was predeceased by her husband, Guy Rumsey, on January 23, 1985.

Walters, Ethel (Wunder) - Ethel (Wunder) Walters, 79, of Bradenton, FL, died on Friday, November 30, 1998. A life-long resident of Wayne County, Ethel lived in Williamson for 53 years.Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Dr. Harold B. Walters; son, David (Susan) Walters of Walworth and daughter, Diane (David) VanLare of Marion; grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Smith of Sodus, Geoffery Walters of Broomfield, CO, Andrew VanLare of Rochester and Laura (James) Eggleston of Schenectady; great-grandson, Jacob Smith; sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Rose Wunder of Lyons, John and Norma Walters of Newark; a niece and nephew; many friends and special neighbors.

DeJohn, Virginia A. - Virginia A. DeJohn, 70, of Madison Street, Lyons, died November 24, 1998 at Rochester General Hospital. Virginia was born April 19, 1928 in Lyons, a daughter of Peter and Josephine DeSain Marro. She was employed at the Wayne County Department of Social Services for 19 years, and was a member of St. Michael's Church in Lyons. Interment interment at Elmwood cemetery.Virginia is survived by her husband of 51 years, Anthony Sr.; son, Anthony (Janice) DeJohn, Jr. of New Jersey; daughter, Debora (Christopher) Barry of Newark; six grandchildren, Ryan, Keenan, Trenton, Darrin Barry, Nicholas and Danielle DeJohn; three sisters, Mary Pettrone of Rochester, Tina Bradfield of Irondequoit, and Cecelia Cassavino of Newark; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and aunt, Helen (Lena) DeVito of Newark. She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.
