Orbaker, Sarah E. - Sarah E. Orbaker, 81, of Mobile Parkway, Newark, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at Via Health of Wayne, Newark Campus. Mrs. Orbaker was born in Newark on April 25, 1917. She retired from Seneca Foods in Marion. She had lived in Lincoln, Neb., in her earlier years; in Newark for 15 years; and in Marion for 25 years. She is survived by a son, Ken of Newark; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lewis, in 1982. Interment Riverview cemetery, Clifton Springs.

Goodman, Phyllis M. - Phyllis M. Goodman, 90, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at Via Health of Wayne, Newark Campus. Mrs. Goodman was born March 28, 1908 in Plainfield, New Jersey, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Kolb. She had worked for several years as the cafeteria manager in the East Palmyra School. Phyllis was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. She was a member and Past Matron of the Amitie Chapter #473, Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by a son Robert (Lynn) of Newark; four daughters, Phyllis (Richard) Phelan of Germantown, MD, Beverly (Harry) Eigenberg of Naperville, IL, Vivian (James) DenDecker of Sodus Point and Judy (Richard) Stillson of Naples, FL; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Howard Kolb of Rochester, a sister, Doris Shaw of Fort Myers, FL, and several nieces and nephews. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Robert M. Goodman, Feb. 9, 1993. Interment in Whitney cemetery, Seneca Castle.

Durgan, Donnie E. - Donnie E. Durgan, 21, died on November 6, 1998, in a car accident. Donnie was a 1996 graduate of Newark High School, where he played football, lacrosse and wrestled. He was the Section 5 Class A Champion at the 177 lb. weight class in 1995; this championship was his 100th high school wrestling win. Donnie received an Associates Degree from Finger Lakes Community College in 1997 and was in his junior year at Cortland State College. He was a physical education major and continued to play lacrosse at both FLCC and Cortland. He was also a member of the Newark Elks Lodge. Interment in Newark cemetery. He is survived by his mother and father, Joan and Earl Durgan of Port Gibson; brother, Raymond Durgan of Walworth; sisters, Sondra Durgan and Sherry Durgan, both of Newark; maternal grandparents, Chester Beers of Schroon Lake and Renee Dolfinger of Poughkeepsie; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Torbitt, Timothy W. - Timothy W. Torbitt, 41, of Canal Street, Palmyra, died November 5, 1998, in a car accident in Palmyra. Tim was born March 20, 1957, in Clifton Springs to Helen Armstrong and Robert Torbitt. Tim had been working at Fold-Pak in Newark for the past nine years. He was a member of the Palmyra Assembly of God Church. He is survived by his wife, Lisa (Griffin) Torbitt of Palmyra; two sons, Nathan and Troy of Newark; his father, Robert of Newark; his mother, Helen Armstrong of Wolcott; paternal grandmother, Dorothy Torbitt of Oswego; three brothers, Terry of Newark, Mark of Syracuse, and Rob of Daytona Beach, FL; two sisters, Sue Joslyn of Newark and Wendy Torbitt of Raleigh, NC; 12 nieces and nephews, and one great uncle.

DeCook, Laura J. - Laura J. DeCook, 63, died November 7, 1998. Funeral services were held at the Stevens Funeral Home, 3896 Buffalo St., Marion. Interment in Marion cemetery. She was predeceased by her mother, Caroline VerPlank. She is survived by her father Abram VerPlank, Marion; son Michael DeCook of Myrtle Beach, SC; two daughters Carol (Daniel) Munson, Watertown; and Michelle (Steven) Bliek, Williamson; two brothers Charles (June) VerPlank and Roger (Marcia) VerPlank, both of Marion; two grandchildren Michael DeCook and Danielle Munson; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Nugent, James E. - James E. Nugent, 68, of Pearl Street, Newark, died November 9, 1998 at ViaHealth of Wayne. Jim was born in Buffalo on November 19, 1929, the son of John Francis and Harriett (Sherman) Nugent. He retired as a sales representative for J.L. Hammett Company of Lyons with 27 years of service. He was a member, elder, and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Lyons Elks Lodge 869. Jim was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1947 to 1950. Survivors include Marianne Nugent; one daughter, Nancy (Brian) Johnson; one brother, John; three grandsons. Jim was predeceased by a son, Jack, in 1998; and brothers, Robert in 1991 and Richard. Interment in Marion cemetery.

Merriam, Ray Byron - Ray Byron Merriam of Tamarac, Florida and Douglas Island in the Thousand Island area, died October 19, 1998 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after a brief illness. He was born in Newark, NY, April 9, 1915, the son of Albert and Bessie (Allen) Merriam. They lived for many years at 418 Church St., Newark. Ray graduated with honors from Newark High School, class of 1933; received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Cornell University; and Ph.D. from New York City College. For many years he taught in high schools in various cities in New York. He served in the United States Air Force for three years during WWII in the US and overseas. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed horse racing, pool and traveled extensively after retiring from teaching. Surviving are his brother, Howard of Anaheim, CA; niece, Marcia L. Camp of Twentynine Palms, CA and her daughters, Jennifer and Diana. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Donald and Paul, wife Beatrice (Burns) and son, William.

Hart, Marinus (Hadley) - Marinus (Hadley) Hart of Marion, 85, died on October 28, 1998. He was a retired carpenter. A Memorial Service was held at the East Palmyra Christian Church. Survived by his wife, Hendrika Hart; his daughter, Adriana (Alan) Hadley, Marion; two grandchildren, Shane and Jeremy; his family in the Netherlands; and nieces and a nephew.

Denisi, Maria C. - Maria C. Denisi of Newark, age 77, died Oct. 29, 1998. She was born on June 14, 1921 in Calabria, Italy. She was the daughter of Elia and Maria Cannella Marzio. Years ago, Maria worked for Seneca Foods in Newark. She is survived by three sons, Joseph (Angie) of Woodbury Heights, NJ; Pasquale (Anna) and Vincent (Nancy) of Newark; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Elia in 1971 and her husband, Giovanni in 1993.

Darling, George E. - George E. Darling, 86, died on October 31, 1998, at Clifton Springs Hospital. George was born April 6, 1912, in Chapin, the son of Harry and Bessie Darling, and has lived in the area all of his life. He was retired from Herendeen Brothers Hardware in Shortsville. George enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing. He spent summers at his camp in Eagle Bay. Interment in Pioneer cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lillian; sons, Father William Darling, rector of St. Salome's Church in Rochester, Gordon Darling of Florida and Randy Darling of Newark; daughters, Sandra (Donald) Lyons of Shortsville, Donna Reiff of Canandaigua, Katrina (Bryan) Galbraith of Clifton Springs and Kimberly Zeger of Newark; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; foster children; three brothers, Kenneth (Lucy) Darling of Seneca Castle, Clarence Darling of Penn Yan, Alwyne (June) Darling of Orleans; sister, Ann (Charles) Burgess of Clifton Springs; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers.

McCann, Thomas P. Jr. - Thomas P. McCann Jr., 59, died October 28, 1998. Interment in the Palmyra cemetery. He is survived by his children, Michelle (Kenneth) Dailey, Terrence McCann, Andrew McCann; a granddaughter, Jazmine Dailey; a sister, Kathleen (Art) Angst; nieces and nephews.

Brown, Florence - Florence Brown, 90, of Walworth, died on November 2, 1998. Interment in Marion cemetery. Florence was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Brown. She is survived by her daughter, Ruthie Brown, Walworth; son, David (Marsha) Brown, Palmyra; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Ruth Burrows of, Gouverneur.

Crane, Shirley J. (VanWaes) - Shirley J. (VanWaes) Crane, 72, of Clearwater, FL, died October 17, 1998 at Hospice House Woodside, Pinellas, FL. An Eastman Kodak Co. retiree, she was formerly of Newark. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, William Crane; daughter Robyn (Michael) Taylor of Clearwater, FL; 2 grandchildren, Kristopher and Kourtney; brothers Don (Peg) VanWaes of CA, Richard (Dorothy) VanWaes of Newark, sister-in-law Charity Minier of Williamson, nieces and nephews.

Mooney, Michael W. - Michael W. Mooney, 56, of Maple Plain, Minnesota passed away recently. Michael is survived by his wife, Ellen (Skinner); mother, Claire of Elizabeth, NJ; sister, Mary (Donald) Love and niece, Jennifer, all of Pittsburgh, PA.

Bartucca, Maria - Maria Bartucca, 79, of Vienna St., Newark, died Wednesday, November 4, 1998, at ViaHealth of Wayne, Newark campus. Mrs. Bartucca was born October 27, 1919 in Curinga, Italy, the daughter of Andrew and Rose Bartucca. She came to this country in July of 1955. She had worked for many years in the sewing room for Hallagan Manufacturing, and was a communicant of St. Michael's Church. Interment in the East Newark cemetery. She is survived by a daughter, Maria (Domenico) Fruci of Newark; three sons, Paul (Nancy) of Waterloo, Andrew (Elvira) and Domenic (Antoinette), both of Newark; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul and Domenico Bartucca of Italy; three sisters, Anna Mozgowiec of Florida, Rose Trovato and Catarina, both of Italy. She was predeceased by her husband, Guisseppi; grand-daughter, Maria Fruci; sister Angelina Ruggiero; and brothers, Andrew and Joseph Bartucca.

Brumm, Hannah Marie - Hannah Marie Brumm, infant daughter of Jonathan and Terri (Morganti) Brumm, of Legionnaire Dr., Irondequoit, died November 3, 1998, at Strong Memorial Hospital. Hannah Marie was born January 28, 1998 at Genesee Hospital in Rochester. Interment in East Newark cemetery. She is survived by her parents; siblings, Danny, Ryan and Samantha Cordaro. Also surviving are her maternal grandparents, Lois & Ray Barto of Newark, maternal great-grandparents Luella Daeffler of Waterloo and Francis Millard of Newark; paternal grandmother, Inez Brumm of Newark; aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Griffiths, Carolyn Grace "Keyo" - Carolyn Grace "Keyo" Griffiths, 33, of Pelham Manor, NY, formerly of Waterloo, died November 1, 1998 following a long illness. She was the youngest of 10 children and a graduate of Waterloo High School. She received her B.A. degree in German at SUNY Oswego. Interment at Pelham Cemtery. She is survived by husband, John; daughter, Henrietta (James) Griffiths; her parents, James and Margaret Patsos, Sr., of Waterloo; brothers and sisters, James Patsos Jr. of Waterloo, Margaret Evans of Rochester, Stephen Patsos of Interlaken, Eileen Taylor of Newark, Christine Patsos of Syracuse, Mark Patsos of Booneville, Daniel Patsos of Walton, Catherine Patsos of New York City, and Nancy Patsos of NYC; 15 nieces and nephews; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Lester, Mildred - Mildred Lester of East Palmyra died on October 22, 1998 at age 87. She served as Postmaster of East Palmyra for over 30 years & was a member of Palmyra & Arcadia Senior Citizens. Interment East Palmyra cemetery. She is survived by her children, Irene (Albert) Bailey, Robert C. Lester, Donald (Joyce) Lester; 9 grandchildren; great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mary VanHaneghan, Ina Wage; and several nieces & nephews.

VanValKenburg, Sandra J. - Sandra J. VanValKenburg, 50, of Shuler Street, Lyons died Thursday, October, 22, 1998 at ViaHealth of Wayne. Sandra was born in Lyons, July 4, 1948, daughter of Robert and Dorothy Chappell Hunt. She had worked at IEC Electronics in Newark for 10 years. Interment in Lyons Rural cemetery. She is survived by two daughters, Sondra VanValKenburg and Lida (Dan) Fremouw of Lyons; two sons, Frank (Dawn) and James of Lyons; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Sarah Ireland of Wolcott, Marian Higbee of Lyons; four brothers, Fred and George Hunt of Lyons, William Hunt of Wolcott, John Hunt of Clyde; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in 1980.

Farnsworth, E. Wallace "Wally" - E. Wallace "Wally" Farnsworth, 93, died Thursday, October 22, 1998 at Clifton Springs Hospital. Mr. Farnsworth was born June 21, 1905, in Marion, the son of Samuel J. and Della Jarvis Farnsworth. He had worked at Bloomer Bros. at one time and retired in 1970 from Garlock Manufacturing, where he worked in the high pressure manufacturing department for many years. Wally, for over 30 years, was a berry farmer in Port Gibson. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newark, Newark Masonic Lodge 83, and the Amitie Chapter Order of Eastern Star; interment in East Newark cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anna (Burke) Farnsworth; a son, Wallace E. (Bonnie) of Clifton Springs; two daughters. Lois (Frederick) Ludwig and Alma (Edward) O'Connor both of Port Gibson, seven grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren, a brother, Daniel Farnsworth of Manchester and several nieces and nephews.

Meyer, Lt. Gen. Richard D. - Lt. Gen. Richard D. Meyer, 87, formerly of Newark, died August 12, 1998, in Ft. Belvair, Virginia. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Meyer (manager of the New York State Electric & Gas Co. in Newark for many years). He graduated from Newark High School in 1928 and from West Point in 1933. He served in three wars: World War II, serving in the Philippines. He received the Legion of Merit for outstanding service in the Transportation Corps in the Pacific Ocean. In 1952-1953 he served in the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. He also served in Vietnam. In 1967, he retired as a Lieutenant General after 34 years of service. Interment was at West Point. He is survived by his wife; six children; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Buragina, Mary - Mary Buragina, 101, of Siegrist St., Newark, died Tuesday, October 27, 1998 in ViaHealth of Wayne, Newark Campus. Mrs. Buragina was born in Italy, July 25, 1897. She came to this country in 1919. She had worked at Hershey Candy in Pennsylvania before moving to the Newark area. For several years, she worked in various canning factories. Mrs. Buragina retired from Bond Clothing where she had been a seamstress. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church; interment in the Newark cemetery. She is survived by four daughters: Portia (James) Paone, Ann (Carl) Conklin, Jeanette (Paul) Staples, and Angeline (John) Yaniri, all of Newark; son, James Buragina of Syracuse; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter, in 1960.
