Port Jervis, N.Y. - Rhoda A. Croopin, a retired School Bus Monitor, for the Port Jervis School System and a life-long resident of the area, died Thursday, February 5, 2004 at Bon Secours Community Hospital. She was 86. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Rhoda Linley Schwaner, born January 17, 1918 in Port Jervis. She married Charles G. Croopin, Jr., who survives at home. Mrs. Croopin was a member and Sunday School Teacher for 60 years of the Grace Episcopal Church in Port Jervis, a member of the Port Jervis Vol. Ambulance Corp and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 685, Port Jervis, NY. Survivors include: her husband at home, Charles G. Croopin Jr.; two daughters: Barbara Britt and her husband William of Smithtown, Long Island and Caroline Croopin of Wappingers Falls, NY; two grandsons, Colby and Adam Britt; one granddaughter, Jessica Weissman and her husband Jeff and two great grandsons: Jacob and Joshua Weissman, also several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Peter Schwaner. Friends may call Friday, February 6 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St. Port Jervis. HOWARD E. JONES

Montague, N.J. - Howard E. Jones, a retired employee of J.L. Judd Ice House, Montague, NJ and Spagenberg-Wilbert Burial Vault Co., Port Jervis, died Monday January 26, 2004 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis. He was 91. He was the son of the late John B. and Elizabeth Mapes Jones, born September 19, 1912 in Montague, NJ. Howard married the late Anna Spencer Jones. He was a WWII US Army Veteran, with the 88th Infantry Division, Blue Devils, Lancaster, Pa. Howard is survived by one daughter, Mildred McConnell and her husband Edward at home. Also by several Nieces and Nephews. He was pre-deceased by five brothers and one sister. Tidd, a Retired Quality Controller for Carnegie Industries, Unionville, NY and lifelong resident of the area, died Sunday, January 25 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis. He was 65. He was the son of the Late Wiltona and Elizabeth Hulse Tidd, born January 22, 1939 in Port Jervis. He married Janet Fenton Tidd, who survives. Arnold was a member of the Calvary Bible Church, Port Jervis and a member of the Port Jervis Lodge of Elks #645 B.P.O.E. Survivors include his wife at home, Janet Fenton Tidd; one daughter: Deborah Runnalls and her husband David of Matamoras, PA; four brothers: Chester Tidd of Port Jervis, Ralph Tidd of Sparrowbush, NY, Harry Tidd and his wife Andrea of Port Jervis and William Tidd and his wife Candace of Port Jervis; six sisters: Susie Hughson, Shirley Martin, Eleanor Myers and her husband Michael, Arlene Gullick, Linda Edwards, Rhonda Stevenson and her husband Michael, all of Port Jervis; two grandsons: Brad and Christopher Foster. HELEN F. LEMON

MATAMORAS, Pa. - Helen F, Lemon, a retired equipment clerk for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a lifelong resident of the area, died Jan. 18, 2004, at the Julia Ribaudo Senior Care, Lake Ariel, Pa. She was 89.
She was born Nov. 29, 1914, in Newburgh, N.Y., the daughter of Elmer L. and Grace M. Wells Mapes.
She was the widow of Francis J. "Abby" Lemon Sr.
She attended the Matamoras United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Pocono Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.
In earlier years, she was very active as a member and past president of the Easter Lily Lodge of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, as her husband was an engineer on the Erie Railroad.
Her family said, "In June 1998, Helen's new home became Julia Ribaudo Senior Care, where she was lovingly cared for by many wonderful people whom her family and she came to know and love in those later years. Helen had many friends there and was very active in the many programs at Julia Ribaudo. She was known by all and they truly became her extended family. She had one very special friend, Edith Corey, who will truly miss her."
Survivors include her son, Francis "Butch" Lemon Jr., and his wife, Kay, of Matamoras; her daughters Jean Munoz and her husband, Joseph, of Matamoras, and Peggy Grennille and her husband, Bill, of Montague, N.J.; her grandchildren, Craig and Karen Lemon, Jimmy Emery and Elizabeth, Michael, Christopher and Megan Grennille.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Emery, and her son, Ralph R. Clark Jr.
Funeral services were Jan. 21 at Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, N.Y., with the Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst officiating.
Burial was in Pine Grove cemetery, Matamoras.

PAULINE A. BUDZINSKI

DINGMAN TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Pauline A. Budzinski, 88, of Dingman Township, Pa., a retired clothing designer, died Jan. 16, 2004, at her home with her family by her side.
She was a lifelong resident of the area.
She was born in New York City Feb. 18, 1915, daughter of Anthony and Katina Eftaxia Theodoseau.
She was married to the late Frank Budzinski.
She was a member of St. Andrew's Greek Orthodox Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in New York City.
She is survived by her son, Theodore Budzinski, and his wife, Patricia, of Milford; three grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Anthony.
Funeral services are to be announced by Holy Deliverance Apostolic Temple in Newburgh. Call 561-2503 for information about the services.
Pastor Douglas Gibson will officiate.

Port Jervis, New York - Minnie Irene Ampf, retired owner of Fort Lee Delicatessen, Fort Lee, N.J., died Jan. 14, 2004, at her home. She was 90.
She was born Nov. 9, 1913, in Amrum, Germany, the daughter of Jan Peter and Clara Petersen Flor.She was the widow of William Ampf.Survivors include her daughters, Susan Bloom and her husband, Gerald Talmage, of Barryville and Barbara Maillet and her husband, Gary, of Charlotte, N.C.; her grandchildren, Cynthia Garcia, Michael Bloom, Denise and Renee Maillet; her great-grandson, Devan Bloom; two nieces and three nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, John Peter Ampf.

Town of Greenville, N.Y. - WILLIAM R. WIEBOLDT Town of Greenville, N.Y. William R. Wieboldt, a retired dairy farmer and lifelong area resident, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004 at his home. He was 92. The son of the late Ernest A. Wieboldt and Mary Coslick Wieboldt, he was born Oct. 10, 1911 in West Orange, N.J. He was the widow of Annie Kozlowski Wieboldt. He was a founding member of the Greenville Fire Dept. Survivors include two daughters, Sondra Ames and Karen Wieboldt both of Greenville; two sons, Lee W. Wieboldt and his wife Theresa of Greenville, Gregory L. Wieboldt and his wife Mary Theresa of Greenville; two sisters, Ruth Harford of Matamoras, Pa. and Lillian Andriack of Port Jervis; one brother, Roland Wieboldt of Bradenton, Fla.; six grandchildren, Wendy Harford, Wayne Wieboldt, William and Richard Wieboldt, Audra and Ryan Ames; four great-grandchildren, Jake, Lauren, Grace Harford and Christina Ross; and several nieces and nephews. HANS "LOTHAR" SCHOENFELD

Glen Spey, N.Y. - Cocoa Beach, Fla. - Hans Lothar Schoenfeld, president and founder of Lothars Body Shop in Middletown, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2004 in Cocoa Beach, Fla. He was 75. He was born September 5, 1928 in Halle an der Saale, Germany. As a young man in Germany, Lothar was active in youth swimming clubs and learned his trade as an automotive apprentice for Auto Kuehn in Germany. Lothar, his wife Marion, whom he married in Frankfurt, Germany on Dec 18, 1953, and eldest daughter Jutta, immigrated to the United States in 1957. After successfully honing his craft at a car dealership in Bergen County, N.J., he moved to the farmland of 1960's Orange County. Lothar found employment at a body shop in Middletown and soon after opened the doors of Lothars Body Shop on Route 211, "The Miracle Mile" in 1962. After retiring from daily activity at the shop in 1989, his wish was to have the family business countine on, which has been operated by his youngest daughter and vice president, Christine. Among his many long standing personal accomplishments, he achieved the status of captain and life member for Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Company. He was a member of the Fire Chiefs Association of Orange County; Hoffman Lodge #412, F.&A.M.; member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Middletown Lodge of Perfection 14; and The Orange County Shriners Club, AAONMS of Mecca Temple. He was a founding father of the German American Club of Middletown and held numerous offices for the Black Forest Colony of Glen Spey. He lived life to the fullest as an avid traveler around the world. Lothar has a passion for the sea and found pleasure as an experienced pilot owning and flying his own Cessna airplane for many years. Lothar and Marion celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in December. A family statement reads: "Lothar, as everyone knew him, was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather and a friend to people around the world. He employed many people in the Middletown area and anyone who ever met him could never forget him. He was an innovator in the auto body industry and a man who would only tell you the truth. He experienced more in his life than most people can only imagine or read about. he is the epitome of an honest, hard working man. He was a mentor to his children and grandchildren." He is survived by his wife, Marion; his eldest daughter, Jutta and her husband, Christopher Bishop, of Havertown, Pa.; and his youngest daughter, Christine and her husband, John Trifari of Glen Spey. Lothar has two granddaughters, Marlena and Alexa Bishop of Havertown, Pa.; and two brothers, Eric Schoenfeld and Peter Smollish, both of Germany. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 14 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis. Masonic services will be held Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 15 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. JULIUS LUKE SYLVIA

Sparrowbush, N.Y. - Julius Luke Sylvia, a retired principal for the Port Jervis High School and retired Lt. Col. of the US Army and 44-year area resident, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004 at St. Joseph's Place in Port Jervis. He was 87. The son of the late Julius V. Sylvia and Mary Moniz Sylvia, he was born Sept. 7, 1916 in New Bedford, Mass. He was the widower of Evelyn Osburn Sylvia, who passed away July 26, 2000. He was a former member of the Catskill and Poughkeepsie United Methodist Churches; member of the Catskill Lodge of Masons; present member of the Drew United Methodist Church, Port Jervis; a former high school teacher in the Catskill and Poughkeepsie School Districts. Julius grew up in the rural setting of North Dartmouth, Mass. He graduated from New Bedford High School and then was admitted to Springfield College where he was prepared for teaching science and physical education. He obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1940. He entered the US Army in 1941. He rose from the rank of an enlisted man and several non- commissioned grades and was appointed to Officers Candidates School in Carlisle, Pa. He was awarded the commission of Second Lieutenant. He was sent to England (via Scotland) as a member of the 6th Armored Div. in General Patton's Third Army which campaigned in Europe. He was the recipient of 5 Campaign Stars, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart Medal. After Hitler was defeated, he was sent back to the USA and was mustered out of actual service into the Reserve Forces for 16 years. He then retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1960. He then became principal of the Port Jervis High School until his retirement in 1972. He was an avid golfer. He began as a caddy at the New Bedford Country Club at age 10. In high school, he captained a successful golf team for three years. He later became the golf instructor at Springfield College. He also played Varsity soccer and lacrosse and was a member of the track team. Prior to his retirement from Port Jervis School District, he had been matriculated in the Doctoral Program at New York University. His leadership helped him to establish the Tri-State Area Day Care Center in 1974. He retired after 20 years as president of the Board of Directors. His civic interests included membership on the Board of Trustees of the Port Jervis Free Public Library and former president. He was a member and past President and treasurer of the Port Jervis Rotary Club. His church years included his membership in the Catskill and Poughkeepsie United Methodist Churches and at present the Drew United Meth. Church, Port Jervis and Choir member. He served his church as president and member of various committees responsible for the ongoing of the church. Serving the Lord in whatever capacity was his Credo. The most outstanding event in his life was the Blessing of Marriage to Evelyn Osburn Sylvia. He has often thanked God for that. Survivors include his son, Edward O. Sylvia and his wife Mary G. Sylvia of SeaBrook, Md.; one sister, Dolores Peters of Martinsville, Va.; one stepgrandson, Matthew Brett Ayers and his wife Jennie of Sea Brook, Md. Visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 12 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m. at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main Street, Port Jervis. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the Drew United Methodist Church, Port Jervis. The Rev. Robert Cassidy will officiate. Huguenot, N.Y. - Teresa C. Riordan, a retired aide for the Tri-State Day Care Center, Port Jervis, and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, January 4, 2004 at St. Joseph's Place, Port Jervis. She was 82. The daughter of the late Frank and Jane Farrell Mulvey, Teresa was born October 3, 1921 in Brooklyn. She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Port Jervis, member of St. Mary's Choir and the Tri-Sate Community Chorus, member of Catholic Daughters Court Madonna #114, Port Jervis, and Port Jervis Music Study Club. A family statement reads: "Teresa was a loving, caring and giving person to all who entered her life. She was dedicated to and very proud of her family. She was at her finest and fullest when she was around children. Her beautiful voice will be greatly missed." Survivors include one daughter, Ann Ponds and her husband, Warren, of Huguenot; three sons, Dennis Riordan and his wife, Kathy, of Port Jervis, Joseph Riordan and his wife, Rosemary, of Huguenot, and Stephen Riordan and his wife, Jeri, of Port Jervis; one brother, James Mulvey of Milton, Mass.; nine grandchildren, Warren and Arianne Ponds, Emily and Jessica Riordan, Joseph and Christopher Riordan, Matthew, Timothy, and Sean Riordan; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Joseph Riordan, who died in 1991; and her son, James. Port Jervis, N.Y. - Sarah B. Hoffman, a retired line supervisor for Kolmar Labs, Port Jervis, and a lifelong resident of the area, was called home to be with the Lord Friday, January 2, 2004. She was 90. The daughter of the late Frank and Pearl Cisco Bell, she was born February 19, 1913 in the Town of Deerpark. She was a member of the Deerpark Reformed Church, Port Jervis. Survivors include her brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, Alma and Levi Hoffman of the Town of Greenville; several nieces and nephews including, John Bell and his wife, Cecelia, of Mt. Hope, and Frank Bell and his wife, Jean, of Port Jervis. She was predeceased by her husband, Darwin Hoffman on March 4, 2001. Kinston, N.C. - Formerly of Matamoras, Pa. Sherry Lee Osterhoudt, a health care giver, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003 in Goldsboro, N.C. The daughter of Kenneth and Linda Morgan Osterhoudt, she was born Sept. 17, 1968 in Port Jervis. Survivors include her parents, Kenneth and Linda Osterhoudt of Jacksonville, N.C.; one brother, James Osterhoudt and his wife of New York; her paternal grandmother, Isabel Osterhoudt of Kinston, N.C.; two aunts, Lisa Smith and Susan DeRose; one nephew; and one niece. Matamoras, PA - Carolyn Louise Kroger, a retired Bookkeeper for Barbara Quilting Co., Port Jervis, NY, and a life long area resident, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Milford Senior Care, Milford, PA. She was 88. Daughter of the late Adolf and Caroline Kleinert Gallondorn, she was born May 11, 1916 in Port Jervis. She was married to the late Ralph B. Kroger. Mrs. Kroger was a member of St. Joseph's RC Church, Matamoras, PA; member of the Alter and Rosary Society of St Joseph's; and a member of the Catholic Daughters Court Madonna # 114, Port Jervis. Survivors include two sons: Daniel Kroger and his wife Alberta of Matamoras, PA and Jerome Kroger and his wife Anne of Laguna Niguel, CA; two grandchildren: Laura and Edward; one great granddaughter, Levi, also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Ralph B. Kroger Jr.; her grandson, David; her brother, Nicholas Gallondorn; also her sister, Florence Gore. Friends may call Saturday, July 31 prior to services. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 31, 2004 at 10 a.m. in The Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, NY. Rev. August Ricciardi officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove cemetery, Matamoras, PA. Contributions may be made to the Residents Activities Fund c/o Milford Senior 264 Route 7 & 209, Milford, PA 18337. Funeral arrangements by Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home Inc., 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis.
