LEON "BUB" MCGAR

Livingston Manor, N.Y. - Leon "Bub" McGar of Livingston Manor, a retired truck driver, died Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Temple University in Phillidelphia. He was 65. The son of Leon C. Sr. and Mabel Slawson McGar, he was born on July 12, 1938 in Liberty. Bub was a member of the Hunter Road Hunting Club. Survivors include his parents, Leon C. Sr. and Mabel McGar of Livingston Manor; his long time companion, Dixie Lee of Egg Harbor, N.J.; two daughters, Glenda Amador and her husband, Arturio of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., Cleta Magyar and her husband, Miles, of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; one brother, Fred McGar and his wife, Anne, of Livingston Manor; two sisters, Joan Robinson of Livingston Manor, Virginia Gartland and her husband, Richard, of White Sulphur Springs; and four grandchildren, Ryan, Carla, Cole, and Alana. Family will receive friends on Saturday, October 11 at 9 a.m. at Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl Street, Livingston Manor. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 11 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Bridgette LeConey will officiate. Donations may be made in Bub's name to SCACC Family Council, PO Box 671, Liberty, NY 12754. Arrangements were under the direction of Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home.

ANNA P. ENGLESE

Warwick, N.Y. - Anna P. Englese of Warwick passed away on Monday, October 6, 2003 at St. Anthony's Hospital in Warwick. She was 84. The daughter of the late Patrick and Anna Doyle Gannon, she was born on August 17, 1919 in Brooklyn. She was the widow of John Englese. She was a member of the St. Stephens Church in Warwick, and a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. She is survived by her son, Joseph Englese and his wife, Carol, of Warwick; her daughter, Rosemarie Selvaggio of New City; eight grandchildren, Dawnmarie, Joseph, John Angelo, Edmund, Annmarie, Diana, Dominick, and Phillip; 21 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Diana Decry. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8 and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 9 at the Lazear-Smith and Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 10 at St. Stephens Church, Warwick. Entombment will be in Ferncliff cemetery. JAMES M. CASTALDI

Central Valley, N.Y. - James M. Castaldi, a chemist for URL Labs in Philadelphia, Pa. and longtime resident of the area, died Sunday, October 5, 2003 at Holy Cross Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was 44. The son of John Castaldi and Eleanor Haug Castaldi, he was born September 9, 1959 in Rockville Centre, N.Y. He was a graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School and Orange County Community College. Survivors include his parents, John and Eleanor Castaldi of Central Valley; brothers, Thomas Castaldi of Goshen and Robert Castaldi of Glen Rock, N.J.; sister, Susan Bundschu of Decatur, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, October 10 at the Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush Inc. Funeral Home, 515 Route 32, Highland Mills. Prayer services will be held Friday at 8 p.m. in the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 11 in St. Patrick's Church, Route 32, Highland Mills. The Rev. CATHERINE MARIE "KAY" ASCANI

Alexandria, Va. - Catherine Marie "Kay" Ascani, a certified Wound Ostomy Care Nurse and Registered Nurse passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2003. She was 85. Mrs. Ascani was one of seven children born to William and Catherine Hanretta in Highland Falls. After graduating from Lenox Hill School of Nursing in New York, she met her husband while attending West Point as a cadet. Married in 1942, Mrs. Ascani spent the next 34 years as a military wife, moving her family all across the United States, Europe, and Japan. In 1974 she returned to nursing, and eventually became head nurse at Greater Southeast Community Hospital, where she specialized as an enterostomal therapist in wound management. She moved to Hadley Memorial Hospital in 2001, and was still passionately training her staff in wound management caring for her patients as late as February 2003, before she became ill. In addition to her hsuband, Major General Fred John Ascani, USAF (Ret), married for 62 years, survivors include one brother, John Hanretta and his wife, Ruth; sister-in-law Kim Hanretta of New Windsor; all eight children, John of Engelwood, Co., William of Alexandria, Va., Carole Jo of Schaumburg, Ill., Susan of Beavercreek, Ohion, Stephen of Murietta, Calif., Clare of Pittsburg, Pa., Mary Elizabeth of Austin, Texas, David of Valrico, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and one great grandchild; as well as many nieces and nephews.

EDWARD A. SULLIVAN

New Windsor, N.Y. - Edward A. Sullivan of New Windsor, a retired salesman of mens' clothing for McHughs died on Monday, October 6, 2003 at Bergen Regional Medical Center. He was 80. The son of the late James Sullivan and Mary Margaret Dillon, he was born on September 29, 1923 in the Bronx. He was a past Grand Master of the Knights of Columbus in Oakland, N.J., a World War II veteran; and in his younger days was very active in Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Oakland, N.J. A family statement reads, "He was a loving father and grandfather." He was the widower of Olwen A. Kingston. Survivors include one son, Edward G. Sullivan of Texas; two daughters, Anne D'Aprile of New Windsor, Mary Neglia of Greystone, N.J.; four grandchildren, Tina M. and her husband, Jeffrey Amante, Daniel R. D'Aprile, Laura Neglia, Diana Neglia; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, James Sullivan; and one sister, Margaret Henry. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the David T. Ferguson Funeral Home, 20 North Street, Washingtonville. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Washingtonville. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Washingtonville.

ALBERTA ELAINE BEILING

Liberty, N.Y. - Alberta Elaine Beiling of Liberty, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 87. Mrs. Beiling was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, and was born in Maplewood on October 12, 1915 to the late Winfield and Arminda Williams Robinson. She was a retired postal clerk for Grossinger's Resort, Liberty, and the widow of Bernard W. Beiling. Mrs. Beiling was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Liberty, and had been a volunteer at the former Walnut Mountain Care Center, Liberty. She leaves behind her loving son, Gerald R. Beiling of Monticello; and her daughter-in-law, Sharon Beiling of Woodbourne; she is further survived by four grandchildren, Patricia Elliott, Rachel La Forge, Michael Beiling, and Arminda Donnelly; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one son, James Bernard Beiling. MARGARET ANN RUTHERFORD

Barryville, N.Y. - Margaret Ann Rutherford, of Barryville, a resident of the area since 1948, died Monday, October 6, 2003 at her home. She was 96. She was born February 12, 1907 in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of the late William and Mary Ann Irvine. She was married to the late, Joseph Rutherford. He died January 23, 1988. She was a member of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Shohola, Pa. Ann was an amazing woman who will be deeply missed by many people whose lives she touched. Her love for everyone was boundless. A mentor to all! She was born on Lincoln's birthday and enjoyed her daily visits of wildlife. Surviving are her loving care givers and close friend, Gina Marie Schaefer and family; a niece, Alice Fraser of Rahway, N.J.; her loving friend, Danny Baumgardner of Barryville; an oldtime friend, John Rooney of Yulan. PAOLO GIGLIA

Newburgh, N.Y. - Paolo Giglia, a 25 year resident of Newburgh, entered into rest Monday, October 6, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was 81. Son of the late Sarino and Concetta Mortellaro Giglia, he was born on June 25, 1922 in S. Santo Stefano Quisquina, Sicily. Paolo wed his loving wife, Maria Marretta Giglia, on August 22, 1955 and enjoyed 48 wonderful years with her. Mr. Giglia was a devoted member of the Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh. He was also a World War II veteran of the Italian Army, where he bravely escaped German captivity during his service. Survivors include his wife Maria, at home; his daughters, Concetta Giglia Beaulieu and her husband, Paul, of Newburgh, and Josephine Giglia-Byrne and her husband, Charles, of Marlboro; his brother, Guiseppe Giglia; his sisters, Domenica Picone, Antonietta Cacciatore and Lilla Dina; his grandchildren, Daniel Beaulieu and his wife Johanna Porr Beaulieu, Christina Beaulieu, Josiah Byrne, Gabriel Byrne and Jacob Byrne; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Pietro Giglia. The family will receive their friends on Wednesday, October 8 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. DORIS E. HOPPER (nee FISCHER)

Ramsey, N.J. - Doris E. Hopper (nee Fischer), formerly of Upper Saddle River and Beachwood, N.J., died on October 6, 2003. She was the beloved wife for 61 years of John W. Hopper; loving mother of Alan C. Hopper of Long Branch, N.J. and John W. Hopper Jr. of Middletown, N.Y.; adoring grandmother "Douma" of Kristen M. and Daniel Edge, Michael A. Hopper and Kathryn H. Hopper all of Middletown, N.Y. She is survived by a sister, Patricia McGovern of Plainview, N.Y.; four brothers, Robert Fischer of White Mills, Pa., John Kelly of Yonkers, N.Y., Ronald Kelly of Lanark Village, Fla. and Alfred Kelly of Hawley, Pa.; several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her loving daughter -in-law, Patti Marie Hopper; a sister, Roberta Daniels; and three brothers, James McIntosh, William Fischer, Kenneth Fischer. She was a member of the Saddle River Reformed Church, the Historical Society, and a former member of the Fire Department Woman's Auxiliary and the Woman's Club all of Upper Saddle River. Doris was a homemaker and after her children had grown, worked for the Lehn and Fink Co. in Montvale, retiring in 1986. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 9 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Van Emburgh-Sneider Funeral Home, 109 Darlington Ave., Ramsey, N.J. JABEZ A. BROWN

Middletown, N.Y. - Jabez A. Brown, a retired worker of Delford Rubber Company, died peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at home. He was 62. The son of the late John A. Brown and Rosetta Sinclair Brown, he was born on January 9, 1941 in Lethe District, Hanover, Jamaica West Indies. Jabez "Uncle Roy/ Daddy" migrated to the United States thirty years ago with his family and was a resident of Middletown up until his death. He was the widower of Hilmer Brown, who died on January 26, 1998. "Daddy may have left this earth, but he will always remain in the hearts of the very many people whose lives he touched." Jabez is survived by his beloved daughter, Catris Brown of Middletown; two sons, Anthony and his wife, Veronica, and Timmy, all of Middletown; three grandchildren, Kaitlin, Michael, and Johnathan; one brother, Victor and his wife, Vera, of Washington D.C.; three sisters-in-law; devoted friends, Les and Courtney; and many nieces and nephews; extended family members; and dear friends. Middletown, N.Y. - John Cooper, a carpenter and painter and lifelong resident of the area, died Monday, October 6, 2003 at his home in Middletown. He was 56. The son of Raymond Cooper Sr. and Mary Granger Cooper, he was born August 19, 1947 in Middletown. He attended St. Joseph's Church, Middletown. He was a member and participant with the R.E.C.A.P. and in his spare time did woodworking and taught others how to use various woodworking tools. Survivors include one son, John Cooper Jr. of Riverdale, Fla.; two grandchildren, Alissia and Julian Cooper of Liberty; five sisters, Kate Damms of Napanoch, Grace North of Ellenville, Ethel Cooper of Middletown, Linda Travis of Ellenville, Pat Margarum of Columbus, Ga.; five brothers, Emmette Force of Columbus, Ga., Raymond Cooper Jr. of Columbus, Timothy Cooper of Columbus, Ga., Michael Cooper of Middletown, Anthony Cooper of Middletown; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. ROBERTA "BIRDIE" DOLBY-EHERTS

Greenville, N.Y. - Roberta "Birdie" Eherts, a homemaker and mom, died October 7, 2003 peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving and caring family. She was 48. The daughter of Donald and Charlotte Dolby Carr, she was born in Middletown on April 24, 1955. She was married to Daniel and celebrated 25 years of marriage before he died last year. She is survived by her four children, Daniel E. and his wife Robyn, Middletown, Deitra B., Erica C., Jeremy W., all at home; two grandchildren, Jason and McKayla; three sisters, Denise Grasso and her husband Sal, Pine Bush, Shirley Morse and her husband Phil, and Donna Gladstone of Middletown; five brothers, Edwin Dolby, Keith Carr, and his wife Elaine all of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Douglas Carr and his wife Debbie of Middletown, John Carr of Bloomingburg and Donald Carr Jr. and his wife Laurie of Middletown; her mom and dad, Charlotte and Donald Carr; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roy Eherts and Madeline Corbine; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Birdie loved nature and her home was filled with wonderful plants, special pets and lots of family. An avid car fan, she enjoyed driving her white corvette. STEPHANIE CAREY QUINN

Newburgh, N.Y. - Stephanie Carey Quinn, a teacher's assistant for Head Start of Eastern Orange, died Monday, October 6, 2003 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in the Newburgh Campus. She was 47. She was born November 21, 1955, in Newburgh to Joyce Green Carey and the late Bernard F. Carey. She was married to Edward Quinn Sr. She was a member of St. Mary's Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, member of Newburgh NAACP, youth assistant, girl scout leader and nutrition instructor for youth groups at Glenn Hines Center, Newburgh. Survivors include her loving and devoted husband, Edward Quinn Sr. at home; three sons, Edward Quinn Jr. (Shatoya) and Jerel Lamar Quinn, all of Newburgh, and Zemorrow Rhodes of the state of Oklahoma; daughter, Cristal Torres of Middletown; mother, Joyce Green Carey; mother in law, Joyce Quinn, both of Newburgh; brother, Bernard F. Carey Jr. (Lalaine) of Hawaii; sister, Shelby Herrel (Vance) of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren, Shatoya, Edward Jr., Stephanie Diamond and Sian Quinn, all of Newburgh; and six aunts, five uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. FREDERICK R. SIMPSON

Monticello, N.Y. - Frederick R. Simpson of Monticello passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, October 5, 2003. He was 74. Mr. Simpson was a 32 year resident of the area, and was employed as a court attendant by the Sullivan County Court System. He was born on January 23, 1929 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He married the former Ruth Chako on June 30, 1956 in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Monticello. He was a retired Staff Seargent with the US Air Force, having served his country during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Monticello; the Monticello Elks Lodge #1544; and the PBA. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth at home; one son, Anthony Simpson Sr. and his companion, Maureen Ricco, of Rinegold, Ga.; one daughter, Tracie Fudal of Endicott; four grandchildren, Anthony Simpson Jr, Sherry Maginness, Jessica Simpson, and Matthew Simpson; three great grandchildren, Amy Maginness, Kayla Newman, and Damien Simpson. WILLIAM ROTHMEL

Lantana, Fla. - William Rothmel of Lantana, Fla., formerly of Yonkers, died on Monday, October 6, 2003, in the home of his daughter, Kathryn Quick of Montgomery. He was 84. The son of Samuel and Rebecca Rothmel, he was born on January 29, 1919 in the Bronx. He graduated from James Monroe High School in 1938. He retired with his wife Elizabeth to Coconut Creek, Fla. until her passing on October 27, 1990, after 55 years of marriage. William was a retired roofer and sheetmetal worker for General Motors in Tarrytown, and took up acting over 40 years ago, performing in many plays in Westchester and Off Broadway. He also took great pride in serving his country working in the private sector during WWII, using his sheetmetal skills to repair damaged ships in Pearl Harbor. He was the widower of Elizabeth Farkas Rothmel. Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Quick and her husband, Edward, of Montgomery; two sons, Jeffery Rothmel and his wife, Jule, of Lake Worth, Fla., Kenneth Rothmel of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Andrea Kaplan of Pine Bush, Michael Quick of Montgomery, Jamie Quick of the state of Florida; Melissa, Lindsey, Sarah, Marc, and Blake Rothmel of the state of Florida; great grandchildren, Brittany and Tracey Sciulla, Stirling, Storm, and Spencer Kaplan, all of Pine Bush, and Amanda Quick of the state of Florida. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, October 8 at 10 a.m. at Millspaugh Funeral Home, 22 Bank Street, Walden. Rabbah Diane Leivovitz will officiate. Burial will be in the Star of David cemetery, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. where he will be laid to rest beside his wife. Arrangements were made by Millspaugh Funeral Directors.

ETHEL EMMA JENSEN

Goshen, N.Y. - Ethel Emma Jensen, a retired executive secretary for Grand Union Supermarket, died Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at Orange County Residential Healthcare Facility in Goshen. She was 88. The daughter of the late Frank Effert and Ella Rothe Effert, she was born September 30, 1915 in West New York, N.J. She was the widow of William Howard Jensen. Ethel grew up in West New York, N.J. While living in West New York, her family was very active in politics. Ethel's father, Frank, was a former Mayor. Later on, Ethel met and married William Howard Jensen on June 15, 1941. After William served in the Army during World War II, he and Ethel had then moved to Paramus, N.J. where they started their family. They had resided there for 30 years until they moved to Mahwah. In Mahwah, Ethel was very active with the Mahwah Seniors. Ethel was a loving mother and grandmother. She will be dearly missed. She is survived by her beloved children, Janice E. Ool and her husband, Richard of Middletown and Jeffery Jensen of Columbus, Ohio; one beloved grandchild, Gregory. She was predeceased by one brother and two sisters. Friends and family may visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, October 9 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown. A funeral service of Remembrance will be celebrated, Friday, October 10 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Jean Risley will officiate. Burial will follow in the family plot in Fairview cemetery, West New York. ELIZABETH BEYER BURROUGHS

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Elizabeth Beyer Burroughs passed away Sunday, November 5, 2003 at Eden Park Nursing Home, Poughkeepsie. Mrs. Burroughs was born on September 18, 1919 in New York City, daughter of the late Estelle Flager Beyer Henry and Leopold Beyer. She was predeceased by her husband Maynard Bryant Burroughs on December 20, 1999 and two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy MacDowell and Mrs. Emma Selfridge. She is survived by a son, Maynard Bryant Burroughs Jr. of Rhinebeck; a sister, Mrs. Josephine Quigley of Port St. Lucie, Fla. Other survivors include a cousin Mrs. Grace Pendell Miller of Marlboro, N.Y.; nephews, nieces; and several grandnephews and grandnieces. Mrs. Burroughs attended local schools, graduating from Poughkeepsie High School and the Poughkeepsie Business Institute. She also attended Dutchess Community College and Ulster Community College. Most of her life was spent in the Mid-Hudson area. She was employed as a secretary by A.C. Dutton Lumber Corp., Vassar Brothers Hospital, the British Ministry of Supply, Washington, D.C., Ryan Insurance Company of Kingston and Doctor Frank Gagan in Poughkeepsie. Mrs. Burroughs married her husband on September 12, 1941 at the Poughkeepsie Friends Meeting House. As a housewife and artist, she was active in volunteer work. She worked on the Dutchess County Heart Fund Drive and was chairwoman of the volunteers at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston. She was a former member of the Fair Street Reformed Church in Kingston. She served as secretary of the Ulster County Art Association. She was a former member of the DAR and the Poughkeepsie Friends Meeting where she was a pianist for several years. There will be a graveside service at the Lagrange Rural cemetery, Overlook Road, Poughkeepsie at 11 a.m., Friday, October 10. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Hospice of Dutchess County, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

JOSEPH DAVID WALSH

Hobe Sound, Fla. - Joseph David Walsh, of Hobe Sound, Fla., a former resident of Newburgh, N.Y., entered into rest Tuesday, October 7, 2003. He was 75. The son of the late Joseph D. and Alice Bowe Walsh, he was born on December 12, 1928 in Newburgh, N.Y. He was a 34-year employee of IBM at the Kingston and Poughkeepsie sites and retired 1990. Joseph was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and served two years in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of IBM's Quarter Century Club and the Elk's Club. He was a former member of the Orange County Basketball Officials Association. He was also an avid golfer and former member of the Storm King Golf Clob in Cornwall, N.Y., the Osiris country Club in Walden, N.Y., and the Men's Golf Association of Eaglewood Country Club in Hobe Sound, Fla. Survivors include his beloved companion, Marie F. Petro of Hobe Sound, Fla.; a daughter, Patricia Young and her husband, Steven of Middle Village, N.Y.; a sister, Alice Rockafellow and her husband Joseph of Newburgh; three nephews, Michael Rockafellow and his wife Susan of Newburgh, Stepeh Rockafellow and his wife Margaret of Newburgh and Thomas Rockafellow and his wife Lauren of Montgomery; and several great-nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his loving extended family, Donna and Richard Bremer and children of Newburgh, Doreen and Thomas Yannone and children of Hobe Sound, Fla. and Patricia and Alex Salomatoff and children of Newburgh. Family will receive their friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, October 10 at Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, October 11 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh. Burial will follow at Calvary cemetery, New Windsor. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Martin County, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart, FL 34997-5688 or a charity of one's choice in Joseph's name.
