ANNE LAVEN

Formerly of Woodridge, N.Y. - Anne Laven, 88, Was Puppeteer. Anne (Goldfarb) Laven, of 2751 N.E. 183rd St., Aventura, Fla., died Wednesday, May 26, in Aventura Hospital. She was 88. She was born in New York City on Feb. 1, 1916, the daughter of Reuben and Eva (Masters) Goldfarb. She resided at Ro-Len Lake Gardens in Hallandale, Fla., for several years before relocating to Point East in Aventura. Previously, she had lived in New York City, Manhasset and Merrick on Long Island, N.Y.; and Woodridge, N.Y. She worked as an actress, writer, dancer and puppeteer and was committed to using the arts as a vehicle for social change. As a young actress starting out in the 1930s, she participated in New York City's Theater of Action and other progressive theater groups that presented plays concerned about workers' rights, racism, anti-Semitism and other social justice issues. Her stage name was Anne Gold. Her first husband, Al Saxe, was well-known in Broadway and off-Broadway theater. Mrs. Laven was recently interviewed for a documentary film about left-wing theater. She studied Hindu dance with Nala Najan and performed frequently under her adopted Indian name Amitra. She wrote and performed puppet shows, primarily for children, in public schools and Catskill Mountain resorts, frequently collaborating with her daughter, Cora, and her second husband, Paul Laven. She featured puppetry during her work as a counselor at the Miss Ingalls creative arts camp. Her writings included short stories, poetry and plays, some of which were published. She enjoyed exploring Eastern religion and philosophy as well as human potential movements including Silva Mind Control. She had been a member of Mensa. An avid socialist in her youth, her views evolved over the years and she became a strong supporter of the Democratic Party. She was especially enthusiastic about Bill and Hillary Clinton. She is survived by her daughter, Cora McKie, of Ipswich, England; her brother, Leon Goldfarb of McFarland, Wisc.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Her husband, Paul Laven, to whom she was married for 51 years, died in 2001. She was pre-deceased by three sisters, Dora Goldfarb, Sylvia Goldfarb and Rae Young; and four brothers, Jack Goldfarb, Eli Goldfarb, Ralph Goldfarb and Samuel Goldfarb. There will be no funeral or memorial service. Following cremation, her ashes will be scattered by the Neptune Society.

ELSIE PUGSLEY HULTSLANDER

Bloomingburg, N.Y. - Elsie Dora Rhoda Pugsley Hultslander passed away on June 2, 2004 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Middletown. She was 91 years old. The daughter of Dora Amber and Herbert Pugsley from England, she was born Jan. 13, 1913 in the Southhampton Hospital in Southhampton, Long Island. She graduated as valedictorian from Southampton High School, Long Island in 1931. She attended NY State College for Teachers (now SUNY Albany) with a Bachelor's Degree and did graduate work towards a Master's Degree at NYU and New Paltz College. She was also on the National Council of English Teachers. She taught in Bloomingburg for five years and later for 18 years in Middletown teaching English and Latin; retiring in 1973. Elsie also taught aircraft recognition during WW II. In 1938, she married Charles E. Hultslander and resided at Mountain Side Farm in High View, N.Y. Charles was a farmer and studied at Cornell University. She was a correspondent for the Citizen Herald and the Sullivan County Democrat for many years. Elsie was a contributor to the book The Community Church of Bloomingburg and The Bloomingburg Community. She assisted Joseph Lloyd with his book Bloomingburg Memories. She was a life member and cofounder of the Bloomingburgh Restoration Foundation and was president three times. She was also a member of the Community Church of Bloomingburg, Bloomingburg Grange, Republican Club of the Town of Mamakating and charter member of the Bloomingburg Ladies Auxiliary to the Fire Co. She was a former member of the Women's University Club and St. John's Episcopal Church in Southhampton, Long Island. A bird lover, she was a member of the Audubon and brought up and counted birds for them. She is survived by one sister, Marjorie P. Morse of Needham, Mass.; daughter, Phyllis DelSanto of Fair Oaks; son, William J. Hultslander and his wife Cheryl of Bloomingburg; two granddaughters Cindy Stephenson of Wurtsboro and Greta Crank and her husband Chris of Ashland, Ky.; two grandsons, Brian Hultslander and his wife Nicole and Kevin Hultslander and his wife Gina all of Bloomingburg six great-grandchildren, Tonya and Justin Wishart of Wurtsboro, William and Brianna Hultslander of Bloomingburg and Aaron and Abbie Crank of Ashland, Ky. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 4 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the VanInwegen-Kenny Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan St., Wurtsboro. Services will be held at the Community Church of Bloomingburg, Saturday, June 5 at 2 p.m. Donations may be made to the Community Church of Bloomingburg or to the Bloomingburgh Restoration Foundation. Burial will be in the Bloomingburg cemetery next to her beloved husband Charles. Arrangements are by the VanInwegen-Kenny Inc Funeral Home of Wurtsboro.

DEFOREST M. BRONK

Newburgh, N.Y. - Deforest M. Bronk, an engineer with the Carlgreen Corp. in Walden and lifelong area resident, died June 7, 2004 at home. he was 65. the son of the late Myron Bronk and Laura Bronk, he was born Jan. 18, 1939 in Newburgh. Middletown, N.Y. - Joan E. Schubert, of Middletown, a six-year resident of the area, formerly of Pelham Manor, N.Y. and an engineer from Sceletro and ITT, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at home. She was 83. The daughter of Augustus and Helen Schubert, she was born in April 6, 1921 in Port Chester. A Veteran, Joan served in the US Army during WW II. Survivors include several cousins and her friends, Helen Varcoe, Beverly "Rusty" Grassmyer and the Woodring Family of Milroy, Pa. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. ISAIAH L. RUCKER

Wurzburg, Germany - Isaiah L. Rucker, of Wurzburg, Germany, died May 27, 2004 in Wurzburg, Germany. He was 12 weeks old. The son of Vada and Corinne Montanez Rucker Sr., he was born March 7, 2004 in Wurzburg, Germany. Survivors include his parents at home; his brother, Vada Rucker Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; paternal grandmother Carol Jackson of Cincinnati; maternal grandparents, Jose and Lorraine Montanez of Ellenville; great-grandmother, Higinia Rodriguez of Puerto Rico; aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Georgeana E. Klimchak, a longtime resident of Smallwood, died on June 7, 2004. She was a longtime member and treasurer of the Smallwood Civic Association. Survivors include Michael Klimchak, her husband of 47 years; sons, Michael G. and John R. Klimchak; daughters-in-law, Linda and Julie; grandchildren, Michael, Julia, Olivia, Madison and Kathryn Klimchak; sisters, Ann Manley, Mary Jane Sexton and Carol Witthopf (of Glendale, Queens); and several nieces and nephews. JUNE J. HESS

Maybrook, N.Y. - June J. Hess, a retired railroad clerk for the N.Y., New Haven and Hartford RR, Maybrook and lifelong resident of the area, died Saturday, June 5, 2004 at Campbell Hall Rehab Center. She was 80. The daughter of George W. and Dorothy Wallace Johnston, she was born June 16, 1923 in Maybrook. She was a member of the Maybrook Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary. She was the widow of Bernard J. Hess. Survivors include her son, Bernard R. Hess of Coronado, Calif.; one brother George W. "Sonny" Johnston of Claryville; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Walter Johnston and a sister, Lorena Sporski. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 12 at the Church of the Assumption, Maybrook. SUSAN FEZZA

Brooklyn, N.Y. - Susan Fezza, loving mother of three, John, Maria and Robert Holmes (nephew), a lifelong resident of Brooklyn, born and raised in South Brooklyn, married and lived in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, entered into the Gates of Heaven on Sunday, June 6, 2004 from Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, N.Y. She was 85 years young. The daughter of Justina and Joseph, she was born on August 18, 1918. She will always be loved by all who knew and loved her. Widow of James V. Fezza. Survivors include son, John; daughter, Maria Kehoe; half son, Blaze Fezza; her sister, Jenny Sanseverino; and her grandchildren, John II, and Janel children of John and Stephanie Fezza and Karen, daughter of Blaze. Galax, Va. - Formerly of Orange County, N.Y. Mary Ann Taylor, 78, of Galax, died Thursday, June 3, 2004 at her home. She was born June 19, 1925 in Greenwood, Miss. to Clarence and Kathleen Pearce. She was the widow of James W. Taylor Sr. Survivors include her children, Kathy Spivey, Ward Spillane and Michael Spillane all of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Caroline Hill of Galax, James W. Taylor Jr. of Newburgh, N.Y., John Taylor of Port Jervis, N.Y. and Robert Taylor of Long Boat Key, Fla.; her grandchildren, Joel Spillane, Stephen Spivey, Stephanie Spivey, Morgan Spillane, Michael Spillane, Marleigh Martinez, Jamie Taylor, Hans Taylor, Tonyalynn Guzman, Angeline McDonough, Crystal Taylor and Tiffany Taylor; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Pearce of Greenfield, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends. THOMAS R. THORNTON

Wawarsing, N.Y. - Thomas R. Thornton, of Wawarsing, a longtime resident and a retired supervisor for Imperial Schrade Corp., died June 7, 2004 at home. He was 75. The son of Walter and Catherine Poir Thornton Sr., he was born April 15, 1929 in Syracuse. He was a retired security guard at Ellenville Community Hospital, a member of the Ellenville Reformed Church and an associate member of Kimble Hose Co. #2 in Ellenville. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Loretta F. Krom Thornton at home; his daughter, Catherine Dymond and her husband Richard of Wawarsing; one brother, Alfred Thornton and his wife Rolande of Syracuse; two grandchildren, Melissa Jo Dymond and Jamie Lynn and her husband Neil VanBuren; and several nieces and nephews. Greenwood Lake, N.Y. - Diane Foley, of Greenwood Lake, NY, died on June 8, 2004 at her home. She was 43 years old. Born on August 28, 1960 in New York City, NY, she was the daughter of William Browne and the late Frances Strempel Browne. Mrs. Foley was a Floral Manager with Inserra Shop Rite in Ramsey, NJ and a member of Union Local #1262. Washingtonville, N.Y. - Allen Duncan Burnett, of Washingtonville, a retired principal store keeper for N.Y.S. Thruway Authority, entered into rest on June 5, 2004 at Albany medical Center. He was 77. The son of Forrest G. and Cecile P. Louckes Burnett, he was born December 19, 1926 in Middletown. He was a member and past elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Washingtonville; member of Cornerstone Masonic Lodge of Monroe; member of the VFW Post of Washingtonville; and he was a WW II veteran. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn C. Burnett of Washingtonville; son, Allen Dean and Kelly Ann Burnett of Newburgh; daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Cornelius Doyle of Warwick, Margaret A. and Lt. Col. LENORA M. MILLER

Sullivan County, N.Y. - Lenora M. Miller, a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, died on Monday June 7, 2004 at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center Liberty. She was 70. Lenora was born in Fremont Center on November 9, 1933 to the late Earl A. and Margaret Earl Hunt. She was married to Victor R. Miller. Lenora had worked in housekeeping at the former Sullivan County Home & Infirmary in Liberty. She was a faithful member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Loch Sheldrake. She is survived by her loving husband Victor of Liberty and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister Erma Rosengrant, and is survived by her brother-in-law Paul Rosengrant of Liberty. Visitation and funeral services will be held on Thursday June 10, 2004 at the Calvary Baptist Church Route 52 Loch Sheldrake. ROSEMARIE SUPAN

Bloomingburg, N.Y. - Rosemarie Supan, of Bloomingburg NY, died on Tuesday June 8, 2004 at home. She was 60. The daughter of Muriel Koch Hamilton and the late Leon Hamilton, she was born on March 28, 1944 in Port Jervis, NY. Rosemarie married Frank Supan on January 25, 1964 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Middletown, where she was still a member. She is survived by her husband, Frank, at home; her mother, Muriel of Middletown; son Frank of Bloomingburg; daughter Annmarie Watkins and her husband, Daryl of Middletown; brother Dennis Hamilton and his wife Helen; two sisters, Wanda McLaughlin and her husband Mark, and Beverly Conkling and her husband Donald, all of Middletown; and two grandchildren, Stephanie and Alyssa of Middletown. She was predeceased by one sister, Laureen Stewart. EDWIN J. KLEIN JR.

Williamsburg, Va. - Edwin J. Klein Jr. died Saturday, June 5, 2004 in Williamsburg, Va. He was 61. The son of the late Edwin J.R. Klein and Ann Crep Klein, he was born June 29, 1942 in New York City, N.Y. He was a bank officer at Safra National Bank, New York, N.Y. He served with the US Army in Alabama during the Vietnam Era. A family statement reads, "Brett and Courtney will always remember their beloved and thoughtful uncle and times spent together at their home in Gardiner and wonderful trips to his home in Long Island, N.Y. Ed, you will always remain in our hearts. Our memory of Ed will never be forgotten." Survivors include his brother Vincent and his wife Jacqueline Klein of Gardiner; nephew, Brett Klein of Boston, Mass.; niece, Courtney Klein of Gardiner; partner, Craig Alston of Williamsburg, Va.; uncle and aunt Clarence and Theresa Klein of Jackson Heights, N.Y.; and aunt, M. DeFOREST M. BRONK

Newburgh, N.Y. - DeForest M. Bronk, an engineer and lifelong area resident, entered into rest at the family home where he lived with his sister Laura Gardner, on Monday June 7, 2004. He was 65. The son of Laura Bronk and the late Myron Bronk, he was born Jan. 18, 1939 in Newburgh. He graduated from NFA in 1957 and was a 1961 graduate of Annapolis Naval Academy. He served as a jet pilot on the USS Forrestal. He also worked with the Carlgen Corp. in Walden A family statement reads, "He was a very special man who will be deeply missed by family and friends." Survivors include his mother, Laura Bronk of Montgomery; sons, Majors Matthew and Rene Bronk of Texas, Andrew Bronk of Virginia, Paul and Dru Bronk of Morris, N.Y., Thomas and Tina Bronk of Maryland and Peter Bronk of Maryland; daughter, Maria and Keith Harding of Maryland; and aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his father and niece, Michelle Davis. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. RICHARD FERRIS VINSON II

Cornwall, N.Y. - Richard Ferris Vinson II, of Cornwall, a retired accountant with Walsh Construction in New York, N.Y., died June 6, 2004 at home. He was 71. The son of Richard Ferris Vinson I and Rebecca Weygant Vinson, he was born September 8, 1932 in Cornwall. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Stratis Vinson at home; four sons, Richard F. Vinson III and wife Susan of New Windsor, Robin Mark Vinson of Cornwall, Gary A. Vinson and wife Suzi of Cornwall, George S. Vinson of New Windsor; two daughters, Becky Jo Keyser and husband Steven of Fresno, Calif., Kristy V. Poplawski and husband David of Schenectady; one brother George E. Vinson of Oxen Hill, Md.; brother-in-law, William G. EDWIN W. "BUTCH" NEUMANN

Jeffersonville, N.Y. - Edwin W. Neumann, a retired plumber with Union Local #373 and the owner of Neumann's Cycle Shop, died June 7, 2004 at home. He was 81. The son of Jacob F. and Mildred Cronk Neumann, he was born January 4, 1923 in Callicoon Center. He was a member of the Monticello Masonic Lodge #532 Free and Accepted Masons, where he served as Lodge Master in 1973; the Plumber's Local Union #373; and the Jeffersonville Bowling League. He was a former constable for the town of Delaware and was a civil defense worker during WW II. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Burr Neumann at home; one son, Edwin Neumann and his wife Nancy of Kenoza Lake; five daughters, Adrienne Schick and her husband Paul of Middletown, Debbie Bose and her husband Tom of Youngsville, Deanna LaGattuta and her husband Tom of Swan Lake, Dawn Harrell and her husband Brian of Smallwood, Donna Keesler and her husband Gary of Callicoon Center; one sister, Jean Carman of Parksville; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
