EVELYN D. HUNTSBERGER

Grahamsville, N.Y. - Evelyn D. Huntsberger, of Grahamsville, a lifelong area resident, died June 19, 2004 at her home. She was 94. The daughter of Ben and Mabel Fuller Hill, she was born February 24, 1910 in Eureka. She was the widow of John M. Huntsberger. She was a member of the Sundown United Methodist Church. She was involved for many years with the teaching of the children of the Tri Valley area. She began teaching in 1929 at the age of 19, in the two-room schoolhouse in Grahamsville, with outdoor plumbing and no running water. Later, at Unionville School, Mrs. Huntsberger taught 25-30 children. This was a large school when you consider that one teacher taught all grades, all subjects, including music, art and physical education. In addition, teachers did their own janitor work and took care of first aid in emergencies. Her last year of teaching was at the South Hill School from 1939-40. One of her last pupils at South Hill said her teacher was the person who inspired her to pursue a career in teaching. In 1942, Evelyn retired from teaching and spent time with her husband, Jack, who was stationed in Battle Creek, Mich. When the Huntsbergers returned to Grahamsville, she became the administrative secretary to the first supervising principal at the new Tri Valley Central School in 1946. She served in that position for many years and also served at different times as the clerk of the School Board, administrative assistant and business manager of the school district. Evelyn Huntsberger was a talented musician who played at many area weddings. She also played at both the Sundown and Grahamsville Methodist Church services for many years. She was a published poet and co-founder of the Alchemy Club. She was an artist, who painted and photographed with much talent. Her volunteer work included helping with the Townsman, community newspaper and the preparation of many issues of The Alchemist, local poetry publication. She was a woman for all seasons. You could find her piloting a plane, fishing along a mountain stream or inspiring a young person to go on and do something special with their life. She is survived by one cousin, Eugene Fuller; her caregiver, Pat Maas and the many people in the community whose lives were different because they knew her. The community of Sundown was especially dear to her because her family roots were there. She speaks of this in her poem, "Sundown, Place of My Roots": This is the place-The narrow, green valley, Snuggled between high Precipitous mountains. Where the sun, Rising late, Sets early; The place of my roots. Here, my mother Took her first breath, Spent her earliest years In the small house Standing sturdy on the rocks Over the Rondout. My father's beginning-Over the hill, a space In Greenville. Grandfather, grandmother, Great Grandfather, grandmother, And the great-greats, All had beginnings here. Sundown--Beauty between the mountains." Memorial donations may be made to the Sundown Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, July 17 at the Grahamsville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lorraine Coscia Ackerman will officiate. Arrangements by Loucks Funeral Home Inc., Rt 209, Ellenville.
