Frank Bastone
January 14, 2007
Frank Bastone, a retired manager for American Laundry in Monticello, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2007 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis after a long battle with cancer.
The son of the late Joseph Bastone and Sadie Lombardi Bastone, he was born May 10, 1923 in New York City.
Frank was a member of St. Peter’s Church in Monticello where he was active as a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus; He was also active in the Boy Scouts when he was younger and served in the United States Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Jean DiIanni Bastone, at home; three sons: Dennis Bastone & his wife Marilyn, Michael Bastone & his wife Reesie, and Anthony Bastone & his wife Melissa, all of Monticello; five grandchildren: Joseph, Christopher, Susan, Brad & Fallon; three great grandchildren: Anthony, Alex & Julia; a brother: Raymond Bastone of Mahopac; a special brother-in-law: Michael DiIanni of Monticello; and several nieces & nephews.
He was predeceased by a grandson: Ken Bastone.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 16 from 2 -4 and 7 – 9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 17 at 11:00am at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello.

Carl Jeffrey Davis
January 3, 2007
Carl Jeffrey Davis, an employee of Sal’s Restaurant in Liberty, died unexpectedly in Baltimore, MD on Wednesday, January 3, 2007. He was 21.
The son of Essie Louise Reeder Davis and the late Bernard Goldie Davis, he was born April 28, 1985 in Harris.
He is survived by his mother: Essie Louise Davis of Monticello; two brothers: Paul Davis and Bernard Davis, both of Monticello; and several aunts, uncles & cousins.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 9 from 5-7pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.
His funeral service will held immediately following visitation from 7-9pm at the funeral home.
Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday morning, January 10, at 11:00am at the Liberty cemetery, Liberty, NY.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello.

Helen Mae Elliott
December 31, 2006
Helen Mae Sullivan Elliott, a retired food service employee for Marriot Foods in Sloatsburg and the Quickway Diner in Bloomingburg, died Sunday, December 31, 2006 at the Orange Regional Medical Center-Horton Campus in Middletown with her family by her side, after a courageous battle with emphysema. She was 69.
The daughter of the late William A. Sullivan and Pearl D. Boyd Sullivan, she was born December 8, 1937 in Middletown.
Mom had grace and courage like no other during her illness. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved her family very much and was our hero.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years: James F. Elliott, at home; two daughters: Debra Johnson & her husband James of Bloomingburg and Rosemary J. Joy & her husband Richmond of Bloomingburg; seven grandchildren: Richmond Joy, Jr. (Jennifer), James Joy (Jeanine), William Joy, Jesse Joy, Gary Mann Jr. (Danielle) & Diana Johnson; three great grandchildren: Tyler, Alyssa & Adrianna Joy; five brothers: John Sullivan of Florida, NY, William Sullivan of New Hampton, Thomas Sullivan of Middletown, Donald Sullivan of Pueblo, CO, and Robert Sullivan of Callicoon; six sisters: Gene Griffiths of Middletown, Patricia House of Middletown, Eleanor Williams of Middletown, Pearl Diener of Pecola, OK, Arlene Moulton of Middletown, and Kathleen Brown of Sparta, TN; and several nieces & nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 -4 and 7 – 9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro.
Memorial contributions can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Wurtsboro.

Lee Lawrence
December 27, 2006
Lee Lawrence of Monticello passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at her home with her loving family by her side. She was 85 years old.
The daughter of the late Naomi Postell and Henry Thomas, she was born November 8, 1921 in Silver, SC.
Mom, Ma and Mother as she was so affectionately called, was an avid deep-sea fisherman, a seamstress and loved gardening.
She was raised in the South and later migrated to Harlem, NY, then moved to Monticello in the 1950’s. She was predeceased by two husbands.
Mom was a wonderful person who loved people and good times. She was a loving wife, great mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her four daughters: Semmie (James) Johnson and Ann (Eric) Young, all of Monticello, Doris Lawrence of Belmont, CA, and Joyce (James) Baker of Stockton, AL; two sons: Harry Lawrence of Monticello and Otha Lawrence of Syracuse; a sister: Louise Owens of Charleston, SC; 30 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 29 from 7-9pm at VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 30 at 1:00pm at the Kings Chapel Mission, 15 Spring Street in Monticello. Bishop Leon Williams will officiate.
Memorial contributions can be made to American Cancer Society, 419 East Main Street, Suite 307B, Middletown, NY 10940,

Joseph Francis Devlin
December 21, 2006
Joseph Francis Devlin of Wurtsboro, a retired postal worker from Massapequa, Long Island died Thursday, December 21, 2006 at his home in Wurtsboro. He was 85.
The son of the late Joseph F. Devlin and Lillian Quigley Devlin, he was born September 8, 1921 in New York, NY.
He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post #1266, Mamakating and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4947, Mamakating.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years: Mary Nunn Devlin, at home; one son: Joseph F. Devlin & his wife Teri of Miller Place; four daughters: Susan Foster & her husband Bill of Newburgh, Christine Shazar & her husband David of Valley Stream, Janice Barry & her husband Scott of Laramie, WY, and Patricia Cioffi & her husband Joseph of Dallas, GA; 15 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Interment of his ashes and graveside services with military honors will be held on Thursday, December 28 at 2:00pm at the Sullivan Co. Veterans cemetery, Sunset Lake Drive in Liberty. Fr. John Tran will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Mamakating First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 525, Wurtsboro, NY 12790 or to the American Legion Post #4947.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Wurtsboro.

Merie R. Gillespie
December 14, 2006
Merie Ruth Gillespie of Bloomingburg, a homemaker and lifelong resident of the area, died Thursday, December 14, 2006 at the Orange Regional Medical Center – Horton Campus in Middletown. She was 92.
The daughter of the late Mack Johnson and Christina Merie Manning Johnson, she was born January 7, 1914 in Middletown. She was the widow of Frank Robert Gillespie who predeceased her on February 13, 1976.
She was a former member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Bullville where she was past President of the Altar Rosary Society, making thousands of rosaries and scapulas for missions overseas. A current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Middletown, she was a devoted daughter as well as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by one son: Frank R. Gillespie & his wife Norma of Scotchtown; one daughter: Lucille Bartels & her husband Ronald of Bloomingburg; twelve grandchildren: Frank (Anna), Gabrielle, Andrew, Marcie (Chris), W. Mack (Michelle), Joan, Michael, Nessie, Mary, Theresa, Danny & Laura; six great grandchildren: Joey, Jonathan, Nicholas, Catherine, Colleen & Emily; a sister: Gertrude Schoonmaker of Wallingford, CT; a brother-in-law: George Gillespie of Maybrook; a sister-in-law: Margaret Gillespie of Montgomery; and several nieces & nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two great grandchildren: William and Grace.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 17 from 3:00 to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 18 at 11:00am at St. Joseph’s Church, 149 Cottage Street in Middletown. Burial will follow in the Brick Church cemetery in Montgomery.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Joseph’s Church in Middletown.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Wurtsboro.

Edward F. Romer
December 12, 2006
Edward F. Romer of Summitville died Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at the ORMC – Arden Hill Campus in Goshen. He was 85.
The son of the late John Frank Romer and Anne Rumsey Romer, he was born June 12, 1921 in Middletown.
A member of the Teamsters Local #445, Mr. Romer was a tractor-trailer driver for the former Rupp Southern Tier Freight Lines in Middletown. Serving in World War II and Korea, he was in the 9th Army Air corps, the 2200th quartermaster Truck Company “The Red Ball Express” in Europe. He was also active in the American Legion Post #1266, Mamakating and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4947, Mamakating.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years: Edith Elizabeth Allen Romer, at home; a son: Benjamin Romer & his wife Cindy of Bloomingburg; three grandchildren: Kimberly Labianca of Bloomingburg, April Caggiano of Pine Bush, and Erik Romer of Wurtsboro; and several nieces & nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers: Clarence A. Romer and John F. Romer, Jr.; and three sisters: Jennie Birdsdall, Mildred Becker and Elizabeth M. Romer.
Visitation will be on Thursday, December 14 from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His funeral service will be held on Friday, December 15 at 10:00am at the funeral home. Pastor Robert Hewitt will officiate. Burial will follow in the Bloomingburg Rural cemetery in Bloomingburg.

Josephine M. Avery
December 9, 2006
Josephine M. Avery, a lifelong resident of Monticello & Bridgeville, departed this life on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at Catskill Regional Medical Center Harris, NY. She was 81.
Josephine was born in Monticello on February 3, 1925 the daughter of Joseph & Philomena Kinney Barnum. She was the widow of Philip I. Avery.
She was a longtime member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Monticello. As a young woman she worked for AT&T; in Rochester and later as nanny for two local families where imparting integrity & unconditional love were her greatest gifts. Being an avid swimmer she loved to summer with her family at the Hunter Lake home of her Aunt & Uncle Louis and Betty Reisch.
She is survived by her son Eugene N. Avery and his wife Patricia of Rocky Mount, NC, her daughter Linda Cosco of Monticello and several nieces & nephews.
Josephine was predeceased by her brother Clifford Carlisle II and her sister Marjorie Covalt.
Memorial services for Josephine will be held on Friday, December 15, 2006 at 11am in St. John’s Episcopal Church, St. John St. Monticello. Rev. Ninon Hutchinson will officiate. Burial of ashes will take place in Rock Ridge cemetery Monticello.
Donations in memory of Josephine may be made to the Family Care Council of the Sullivan County Adult Care Center, Sunset Lake Road Liberty, NY 12754.

Patricia A. Bernhardt
December 7, 2006
Patricia A. Bernhardt of Rock Hill died Thursday, December 7, 2006 at the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown after a short battle with cancer. She was 54.
The daughter of Marion Haas Mapes and the late Clifton Mapes, she was born March 19, 1952 in Monticello. She was the widow of Wayne Bernhardt.
She is survived by two sons: Ronald Mapes & his wife Tricia of Fallsburg and John Barton of Mongaup Valley; two daughters: Kelley Barton & her companion Abi Slater of Rock Hill and Kristen Rosen & her husband Jason of Rock Hill; her mother: Marion Mapes of Monticello; two brothers: Robert Mapes and Daniel Mapes, both of Monticello; one sister: Susan Jahn of Monticello; and nine grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sisters: Ellen Price and Louise Gale.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 11 from 3:00 to 6:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. Her funeral service will be held at 6:00pm Monday night at the funeral home.
After Patty’s struggle with cancer, she has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 419 East Main Street, Suite 307B, Middletown, NY 10940, in lieu of flowers.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello.

John Durkin
December 7, 2006
John “Jack” Durkin, a retired foreman for the Village of Monticello Water Department, died Thursday, December 7, 2006 at the Ramapo Manor Center for Rehab & Nursing in Airmont. He was 87.
The son of the late John A. Durkin and Dorothy Jones Durkin, he was born August 2, 1919 in Harriman. He was the widow of Marion Cross Durkin.
A life member of the Bailey Richman VFW Post #9588, Mr. Durkin served in the United States Army during World War II. He was also a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Monticello.
He is survived by one son: John S. Durkin of Las Vegas, NV; four grandchildren: John E. Durkin, Janeen Scorzelli, Richard H. Durkin, Jr. and Nancy Hensley; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son: Richard H. Durkin, Sr.; a daughter: Terry Kinch; a sister: Mary Smith; and two brothers: Wilbur Durkin and Edward Durkin.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 12 at 11:00am at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 15 St. John Street in Monticello. Rev. Ninon Hutchinson will officiate. Interment of his ashes will be held at the convenience of the family in the St. John Street cemetery in Monticello.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello.
