Douglas G. Puryear
September 15, 2006
Douglas G. Puryear, a driver for National Freight Co. for over 20 years, and a longtime resident of the area, died Friday, September 15, 2006, at the Horton Medical Center. He was 50. The son of Imogene Leacock Puryear and the late Raymond Puryear, Douglas was born July 21, 1956 in Jamaica Queens.
A loving husband and son, he is survived by his beloved wife of 8 years, Suzette Winstead Puryear, at home; his mother, Imogene Puryear, at home; his 2 loving sisters, Barbara Houston, and her husband John, of NC, and Bettina Bower, and her husband James, of Monticello; His nephew, Brandon Houston and his wife Deirdre, and their daughter Briana, of MD; and his loving niece Kimberly Houston, of NJ.
A memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 23, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 174 Park Avenue, Monticello, with Terrance Pettigrew officiating.
Cremation will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements entrusted to the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello.

Margaret McCormick
September 15, 2006
Margaret McCormick, a lifelong resident of Forestburgh, died at her home on Friday, September 15, 2006. She was 90 years old.
Margaret was the daughter of the late Abigail McCormick and John McCormick and was predeceased by her loving brother, Danny McCormick and her sister, Abigail McCormick Connell. She is survived by her niece Mary Abigail Milano and her niece's husband Robert Milano; along with many cousins including Maryjean Carroll of Forestburgh, Mary Ann Toomey of Forestburgh, and Mary Kathryn and Tom Woods of Woodbourne, along with her beloved pets. Margaret was also a friend of Bill W.’s for many years.
Margaret attended the Black Brook one room school and St. Joseph's Mountain school in Forestburgh. She was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and a member of the Forestburgh Senior Citizens. She also worked for many years as an Administrative Assistant at the Hamilton Avenue Hospital and the Monticello Hospital.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 17 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 18 at 10:00am at the St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Forestburgh. Fr. Ivan Csete will officiate.
Interment will be held at a later date in the St. Thomas Aquinas cemetery in Forestburgh.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret's name to Veritas Villa Foundation Inc, P.O. Box 610, Kerhonkson, New York 12446.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello.

Frank Mathews
September 12, 2006
Frank Mathews of Glen Wild, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at Achieve Rehab and Nursing Home in Liberty. He was 91.
The son of the late Louis and Mamie Mathews, he was born August 17, 1915 in Brooklyn, NY. He was recently widowed by his beloved wife of sixty-seven years, Muriel Mathews.
After thirty years with the NYC Transit Authority as a bus driver with a distinguished safety record, Frank retired and moved with his wife Muriel to Glen Wild. During their thirty-five years here they bought and operated Hidden Lake Cottages. After his retirement he also worked for Woodridge Oil and Jim Elliott’s Truck & Tractor Sales. Frank was always involved with animals and the land. He raised and cared for animals for the pleasure of his grandchildren. His grandchildren nicknamed him “Dr. Doolittle”, because he had a lifelong gift of being able to “talk” to the animals. A message from his family: “Frank gave us the gift of love and respect for nature and the belief that we are all conservators of this earth. May we all stay true to this ideal for this and succeeding generations.”
He is survived by his sons: Robert Mathews & his wife Rose Mary of Glen Wild and Frank J. Mathews & his wife Susan of Cranford, NJ; and his daughter: Muriel Robbins of Greensburg, PA; his son-in law: Ray Covey of Brooklyn; five grandchildren: Christopher Mathews and his wife Caryn of Grahamsville, Maureen McCleish and her husband Robert of Cranbury, NJ, Amanda Burzynski and her husband Mark of Bloomfield, NJ, Brian Robbins and his wife Leslie of Greensburg, PA, and Stefanie Covey and her fiancée Chris Frates of Denver, Colorado; also four great grandchildren: Ashlyn Mathews, Gillian Mathews, Oren Burzynski and Curtis McCleish; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Maureen Mathews Covey; his son Brian Mathews; his brothers Robert, Edward and Louis Mathews; and his sisters Edith Cable and Amanda Schreiber.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 16 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. His funeral service will follow at 5:00pm at the funeral home. Rev. Bonnie Pinto will officiate.

Catherine F. Kretzmer
September 12, 2006
Catherine F. Kretzmer, a retired registered nurse and longtime resident of the area, died Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at her home in Glen Wild. She was 94.
The daughter of the late Henry Hautau & Catherine Fay Hautau, she was born September 17, 1911 in Englewood, NJ.
Mrs. Kretzmer was a member of St. Peter’s Church in Monticello and the Presentation Church in Upper Saddle River, NJ. She was the widow of George E. Kretzmer who predeceased her on January 21, 2004.
She is survived by a daughter: Catherine Carpenter of Glen Wild; three grandchildren: Greg Kuchar & Phillip Kuchar and Jillian Kuchar, all of Glen Wild; four great grandchildren: Katelyn, Lacy, Ryan & Brittney; and several nieces & nephews and great nieces & nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers and a sister.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 14 from 3:00pm to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 15 at 10:00am at St. Peter’s Church, Broadway & Liberty Street in Monticello. Fr. Robert Ginel will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s cemetery in Monticello.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550 or to the Rock Hill Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 1, Rock Hill, NY 12775.

Yuen Sun Ying Ng
September 1, 2006
Yuen Sun Ying Ng, a former co-owner of Sam Lee Laundry in Monticello, died Friday, September 1, 2006 at the Orange Regional Medical Center-Horton Campus in Middletown. She was 95.
Born July 4, 1911 in China, Mrs. Ng was a member of St. Peter’s Church in Monticello. Since her husband passed away in 1968, she became the matriarch and kept the Ng family together. Her natural smiles radiated genuine warmth, sincerity and love to all she met despite the language barrier. She cherished the close interactions among her grandchildren and close-knit family. She will always be loved and remain in our hearts forever.
She is survived by a son: Peter Ng & his wife Marie of Monticello; three daughters: Betty Ng Prendergast of Monticello, Anna Ng Yee & her husband George of East Greenbush and Marie Ng of Brooklyn; three grandchildren: Michael Prendergast & his wife Jen, Christopher Ng & Anthony Ng.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 4 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.
Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 5 at 10:00am at St. Peter’s Church, Broadway & Liberty Street in Monticello. Fr. Robert Ginel will officiate.
Burial will follow in The Evergreens cemetery in Brooklyn.

Patrick J. Frasca
August 29, 2006
Patrick Frasca of Bloomingburg, died suddenly on August 29, 2006. He was 82 years young, a man of great strength with a zest for life. The son of the late Phillip & Elvira Frasca, Pat was born April 28, 1924 in Manhattan.
Pat was a life long learner and teacher of generations of youth, as evidenced by his 30 year career as a physical education teacher, dean, and coach in the NYC public school system. Retired since 1982, Pat and Rosalie led an active life, contributing their time and energies to many organizations. Pat, a WWII AirForce Veteran, was the Adjutant of American Legion Post 1266 (Wurtsboro), Treasurer of the Mamakating Lions Club, Liasion of the Mamakating Lioness Club, he lectured to school children about his personal experiences in the Pacific in WWII, and enjoyed weekly games of golf and bowling with friends.
Survived by the love of his life, his wife Rosalie, of 51 years, Pat touched the lives of his family and friends in the way he lived his life, unselfishly and with the care and concern he showed to others. Survivors also include his brother, Eugene; sisters-in-law Mary and Annette; brother-in-law Richard.He was a loving uncle to Anne Marie, Frances, Angela, Richard, Ellen, and Vera; and a great-uncle to six nieces and one nephew.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 31 from 7-9pm and Friday, September 1 from 2-4 & 7-9pm, at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro.
Pat's funeral mass will be held Saturday morning, September 2 at 11:00am at the Our Lady of the Assumption Church, High Street in Bloomingburg, with the Rev. Raymond Bagdonis officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 1266, P.O. Box 42, Wurtsboro, NY 12790 or the St. Jude Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Arthur Chandler
August 29, 2006
Arthur “Turfman” Chandler, a 33-year employee of the Concord Resort Hotel, Kiamesha, NY, departed this life on Tuesday, August 29, 2006, at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 55. Arthur was born February 9, 1951 in Uniontown, Alabama. He was a life long resident of Monticello.
A loving, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, Art loved golf and was a dedicated worker. After his years at the Concord he was employed by Sports Plex in Demopolis, Alabama for 7 years.
He leaves behind his wife Mary Chandler of Hartford, Ct.; five children Debrah, Clarence, Yuwana and Demarius Chandler all of Hartford, Ct. and Nicole Chandler of Monticello; Three step daughters: Leola Davis of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Tracy Clarke and Nicole Davis both of Monticello; One stepson: Kenneth Sanders of Monticello; one brother: Richard Chandler of Uniontown; two sisters: Barbara and Susie Gray of Birmingham, Alabama; a very devoted cousin: Willie “Sugarboy” Chandler and Uncle Joe Chandler of Uniontown; his long time loving companion: Mary Davis of Monticello; along with 15 grandchildren; one great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends; his very devoted bosses, Rex and Brenda Bible and many wonderful co-workers.
He was predeceased by his parents L. C. Chandler and Lewis Gray; his brother Arthur and a son Arthur Chandler, Jr.
Visitation will be at the Rock Chapel in Uniontown, Alabama on Saturday, September 9, 2006 from 11:00 am until 1:00pm. Services will follow from 1:00pm until 3:00 pm. Burial will be in the Winfield cemetery, Uniontown.
Donations may be made to the Rock Chapel in Uniontown, Alabama.

Ludwig Schnitzer
August 27, 2006
Ludwig “Opa” Schnitzer, the former owner of The Old Valley Restaurant in Wurtsboro, died August 27, 2006 in Leesburg, FLA. He was 80.
The son of the late Heinriech Schnitzer & Elisabeth Groten Senkus, he was born May 29, 1926 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
He is survived by his wife Ursula Schnitzer of Leesburg, FL; two sons: Michael Schnitzer & his wife Kathy of Wurtsboro and Ludi Schnitzer & his wife Nicole of Wurtsboro; two daughters: Edith Moore of Bullville and Joanne Mullen & her husband Terry of Wurtsboro; eleven grandchildren: Bianca, Alissa, Erin, Michael, Lisa, Christina, Tara, Terry, Lexi, Danielle & Kyle; three great grandchildren: Mahalla, Zoe & Shannon. He was predeceased by his first wife: Elisabeth Steckroth Schnitzer.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 15 from 7-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 16 at 10:00am at St. Joseph’s Church, Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Fr. Peter Madori will officiate.
Burial of his ashes will follow in the Sylvan cemetery in Wurtsboro.

Dora Drew
August 26, 2006
Dora Drew of Monticello passed into God’s loving hands on Saturday, August 26, 2006 in the Albany Medical Center, Albany, NY. She was 78.
Dora was born in New York, NY on October 14, 1927 the daughter of Leonard and Mary Giordano.
She is survived by her loving husband Robert Drew at home in Monticello and her six loving children and families; Joanne Greco and her husband Joseph of Monticello, Rose Mary Benson and her husband Charles of Monticello, Vincent Fazio of Coxsackie, NY, Bonnie Drew of San Francisco, Calf, Robert Drew and Carmen Corbett of the Bronx, and John Drew and his wife Stacey of Lagrangeville, NY and her sister Jenny Sacino and her husband James of the Bronx, NY. Her beloved seven grandchildren, and her three Great grandchildren and her nieces and nephews and many friends will also miss Dora.
"Dora is at peace with her mother and beloved dog HoBo."
Her family will receive friends on Monday, August 28, 2006 from 4 to 8pm, at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc Funeral Home, 401 Broadway, Monticello, NY.
Graveside funeral services will be held for Dora on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at 12pm in the Sullivan County Veterans cemetery, Sunset Lake Rd. Liberty, Fr. Robert Ginel officiating.

Diane Whedon
August 25, 2006
Diane Whedon of Liberty, died Friday, August 25, 2006 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh. She was 58.
The daughter of the late Albert Whedon & Alda VanDine Whedon, she was born May 22, 1948 in East Stroudsburg, PA.
She is survived by six sons: John, Danny, Cameron, Robert, Harold & Eddie; a daughter: Ivana; three grandchildren: Naya, Armani & Joshua; a stepdaughter: Tyara Porter & her son Jivonte; two sisters: Vicky & Gayle; her companion of 25 years: Edward Navarro; many nieces & nephews; and her close friends: Sunny, Rhonda & Denise.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 5 from 10:00am to 11:00am at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.
Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the funeral home.
